So The Name of the Wind is coming out in Portugal soon. Look what they’re doing to promote the book:
How cool is that?
pat
P.S. In case you’re wondering, the answer is pretty fucking cool.

I’m really tempted to shout “First” here, but I know Pat will delete me from the board and his heart forever.
Sweet. And it doesn’t look low budget really, which is quite a feat considering i haven’t ever seen anything like this for a book release. i hope it gets shown on portuguese tv a lot. yay!
holy…!
that was hot!
WTH!
They have commercials for books? I think the only two books I’ve ever seen a commercials for in the US is the Bible and Dianetics.
How do you say “kickass” in Portuguese?…
Damn, I wanna write a book that get such a hot comercial too!
The vid. is pretty cool, but the language…sorry…whenever i hear it it reminds me of my latin-lessons…no good memory…
Dang Pat!!!!!!!! Goosebump inducing…….. Why don’t we ever have killer commercials like that for books here in the US?? Talk about inspiring people to read!!!! :o)
Pat when are releasing the movie rights:P
Shiny! Apparently Portugal kicks some major butt!
I just love it! :)
That was… pretty fucking cool.
Joe out.
I didn’t understand a word of it – and yet I agree with you!
Okay, that was the best book trailer ever. I think it even beat that freaky Guillermo Del Toro trailer. And, you know, he has certain cinematic advantages. So, you know, Booyah!
That was amazing!!! I don’t understand a word, but I know exactly what it said because I’ve read the book so many times.
Good to know that overly dramatic male voice overs aren’t confined to the US. I don’t know what he’s saying, but dammit I know I’d better pay attention. Sounds important.
Rad! I’m jealous that they have commercials for books!
awesome cover art too. But whats with the christian symbol?
I don’t even know what they’re saying and I still got super excited! I’ll probably go home and read it again…for the fourth time… :D
Im waiting for the book to arrive to our bookstores (here in Portugal). The video is really cool, the voice was a little too strong i think, but “Gailivro” do this kind of things very often to promote the books, so it may happen to see more videos of the next books again. I’m really impacient to read it.
Without family… without friends… without a home… one boy stands alone… to learn the secrets of the world that took away all that he ever knew… to make himself ready… for revenge!
(Yeah, I know that’s not really the plot, but Overly Serious Trailer Voiceovers do not concern themselves with nuance.)
Why does Portuguese sound like Russian with that narrator’s accent?
That was fantastic! I’m fairly sure I’ve never seen a commercial for a book aside from the ones that Wysen mentioned.
Pat, I cannot wait until someone asks to make a movie out of your book. It is be BA.
How cool? Very
Although I would of liked to see blue fire or a scrael crawling around some where. The leafs where a nice touch, to ebb the coolness more towards the reality of the book.
-plucky
How cool? Way!
Love the music and the tone of the narrator. Even without subtitles, and with some of the words close enough to English to understand, the gist of the – what seems like an upper class movie trailer – commercial is inspiring. Makes me want to read the book — again!
Cecrow, regina, and anyone else not understanding what the narrator is saying:
It’s the Kvothe’s introduction to his story. You know, “My name is Kvothe. I have stolen princesses…” etc. The images correspond with what he’s saying, like the stack of books when he mentions the University and the sheet music when he mentions the “songs that make the minstrels weep.”
Oooh, that’s fucking COOL. I have trailer envy.
Well that’s new to me- a video trailer for a book.
But new or not, the visuals were very cool.
You’re the only author who deserves trailers for his books Pat.
Keep up the awesome work.
I think maybe the people who did this trailer should do the movie! I would have liked to see Kvothe’s hair when he lowered his hood, but i like how they keep everything for us to imagine…characters etc etc.
Hey Pat, every time I watch that video the voice kind of reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger…yes? no? maybe?
The trailer for the book was so good I want a movie too…y’know whenever you get a lucrative offer from hollywood.
Murdoc is rigth, but he says a little more. The words after the 0:46 seconds are:
This is my legend. Want to know the truth? Too bad for you!
I think we have this commercials because the publishers need to atract readers. Books are expensive here, for most people and because of that, unfortunately, there are few people buyng books in Portugal.
Fortunately, that isn’t my case and I have already read the book in portuguese (yes, I had the privilege to recive the book before it arrives in bookstores :p).
I LOVED the book!In my opinion, that’s, probably, the best fantasy book of the year published in my country. Now, I’m a fan of your work Patrick =D
P.S – I wrote a very positive review about “O Nome do Vento” on Rui Baptista’s Blog (Bela Lugosi is Dead).
Here’s the link if you wanna take a look (it’s in portuguese of course :p)
http://belalugosiisdead.blogspot.com/2009/09/critica-o-nome-do-vento.html
Sorry for the english :/
Why is the US the only country who doesn’t promote books this way? I have seen I think ONE book ad on television here, and bunches for foreign books.
YOU MUST SELL MOVIE RIGHTS TO PORUTGAL.
Even if the movie’s completely in a language I can’t understand, I would see it if it was half as good as that book trailer.
I’ve seen one or two commercials like this in the US… but they sucked and made me want to get their books less.
(P.S. My verification word was “lickedna.” Who writes that shit?)
That is the very first book commercial I have ever seen.
Very awesome.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why don’t they do that in the US!
THAT. WAS. FUCKING. AMAZING.
Did they film the scenes specifically for the book? That’s really impressive. It’d have been even better if instead of the lit candle suddenly blowing out, an unlit one was lit using sympathy
So….when do we get to see that with you personally doing the english voice over? ;)
It is pretty fuckin’ cool, I just wish I understood more than the names >.<
who the hell can translate this for me?;D
We gotta know what there saying it’s like having the second book in klingon(clingon?)idk
maybe not as in high suspense but still!
Portugal rules.
I always find it a bit odd when books are advertized through a visual medium like commercials. I’ve only seen it done once before on tv, but advertizing something on tv that’s meant to pull people away from tv just seems a bit…off.
I nearly shat myself, that was so awesome.
North America in general needs to start heeding Portugal’s example. Books ought to be pushed, especially excellent books like yours! <3 (to you and ze book.)
Im going to go against the grain and say that the trailer doesnt do the book justice. Hate me if you must, but dang – it looked cheap!
That is so awesome! I wish I understood portuguese. It would be awesome if we had trailers for books in the U.S.
I hope they make a movie for this and use the Sword of Truth series by goodkind as an example of what NOT to do! :)
If this became a movie I’d like at least the quality of Eragon.
I’d prefer it to be as beautiful as LOR
This is fun to watch because I keep on catching words and going, “Ooh, Trebon!” and, “Aha, Felurian!” and, “Oh, that bit with the music is probably either ‘make the minstrels weep’ or ‘once I sang colours to a blind man’.” Awesomeshiny trailer.
… But it would be even cooler if I spoke Portugese. Sigh.
Very fucking cool. And whoever made that, should do the movie/miniseries.
Awesome.
I just wanted to say that your book “the name of the wind” is awesome, one of the best ones I have ever read. Maybe even THE best. I am reading it for the second time now. Looking forward the next one, when ever you are done with it, I’ll be waiting :D
A bit offtopic for this blog entry :p Anywho, good luck with the release!
goin back to a blog a few weeks ago on movie musings…how kool would it be if they would make a movie of NOTW as kool as that advert x
(and wow i hav an actual real word on the word verification- bluest)
I wish I spoke Portuguese
Damn, that looks like a movie trailer! A sexy movie trailer of awesome! If the Portuguese don’t fall all over themselves to buy the book after seeing that, there’s gotta be something wrong with them. Just sayin’.
*gurgles* I want to buy the book again, and I already have three copies.
That’s one of the better book trailers I’ve seen. Definitely more high quality than most. Impressive.
The Book Trailer Blog is an interesting site for video book trailers as well, showing how people use video as a viral marketing medium to promote their books.
Wow!! That is totally awesome!! This makes me think good things of the possibility of a movie… at least if the people in portugal film it :P
holy crap man.
You have to do a movie now.
A bit off topic I know, but what exactly *is* a Barrow King?
I’m from Portugal and I really want to read this book.
However, I never watched this trailer on TV – book trailers rarely come out on TV. We could only watch this video on literary blogs and sites. But it is very nice, better than others.
And he basically says what you have on overview: “My name is Kvothe. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me. This is my legend. Want to know the truth? Too bad for you!”
Well, I wish I enjoy this book.
That was absolutely amazing. It’s the first time I’ve seen a promotional commercial for the release of a book. If you ask me, it should be done more often to promote the release of sequels to bestselling books. Or for the release of a book from a well known author. Bottom line, your assessmant of ‘pretty fucking cool’ is right on target.
~Vinny~
I got an email with the Video, and that made interested…looking forward to read it. This isn’t the first trailer for books that i’ve seen though…
Hey Pat, hope you don’t forget the Portuguese public in future events. The majority of Americans think Portugal is a Spanish city…c’mon, the American flag on the moon was made by Portuguese people,as well as Michael Phelps swim suit…lol.
Wow I think I just creamed my panties! That was pretty hot Pat! I was just thinking how I was going to start reading NOTW again tonight but I forgot it at my other office :( now I have nothing to do all night but play with faceook and re-read your blogs…
Wow. It’s days like today that I wish I spoke Portugese. Translation anyone?
Wonderful and Visionary.
The Best “So Called ” novel trailer I’ve ever seen.
Wonderful and Visionary.
The Best “So Called ” novel trailer I’ve ever seen.
I’ve seen other trailer for this book however the one i saw was an Spanish Commercial.
As far as i know it came out long ago.
Pat i hope you don’t mind i post the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNr3A4kGPzs
dam. it totally looks like a movie trailer. another thing in life to look forward to. 3 books, 3 movies, 1 down, 5 more to go……XD
Liked the clip, loved the book, what is taking so long for wisemans fear to come out
Why don’t we get awesome commercials like this in the US? That’s just mind-boggling. Bet you, there would be so many more readers if publishing companies made commercials here. And god does that look awesome. I think the music in combination with the riding and the dark forest gave me a bit of an adrenaline rush. Are book commercials common in (insert wherever that commercial came from here) or is this special?
Also, in case you haven’t seen this yet: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheNameOfTheWind
It’s quite a good website and I think it will amuse you.
And: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpeculativeFictionTropes
that one will take considerably more work to get through.
I am tempted to move there and learn the language just to see commercials for books. Why cant Amercian’s be that cool?
Wow that is awsome advertising, not to mention the cover of that book might be the best one yet. ITS AWSOME!
That was, to coin a phrase, “fucking awesome”. It’s a shame we don’t have decent ads for books over here in England. The only book adverts we get are for some “celebrity” (I use the term loosely) cough*Katie Price*cough about their (ghostwritten) “autobiography”, telling the harrowing tale of how they’re mistreated by the media and are now considering a (horrific) career in pop music. Either that or it’s an ad for some asinine toy the kid forgets in half an hour.
Sorry, didn’t mean to rant on your blog, Pat. :D Love the video.
Jemski.
well,that was exciting!!
Well I live way over here in Australia and can tell you we never get ads like that.
Keep going with the awesome books Pat, you are growing an ever larger fan base over here, and I recommend your book to everyone I know and we all love it, can’t wait for the second book, and man I wish we had ads like that for books here…
Stu
thats is sooooooooo fucking coollll….love their cover too
Love your book, but watching this trailer, I remember that I expected the book to be much darker, although the darkness apparently only really starts in the second book.
(And man, was I annoyed at the first moment, when I noticed that this book is mostly a retrospection! But don’t worry, I really loved it.)
SO awesome! The United States should indeed do trailers for books!
Portugal rocks for having epic book commercials… and it’s official… Name of the Wind would be one breath taking, life changing, pay-way-too-much-to-see-it-a-million-times kind of movie!
Has anyone seen the fan trailer for Name of the Wind on Youtube? James McAvoy isn’t my choice for Kvothe but I thought it was pretty damn good….
Please have someone translate it into English!! If we had sweet trailers like that for books in the US, I think we’d sell more (well maybe, maybe not… but it would still be awesome) – bravo the Portuguese!!!
I think this is even cooler than the “me llamo Kvothe” trailer of a few months ago.
Win.
That. Was. AWESOME!
I just finished your book on the recommendation of a friend, and I loved it. It was incredibly well written, and I cannot wait until the second book comes out.
You have an awesome beard, and you write awesome books. A tip of the hat to you, good sir.
I’ll use your response, it’s pretty fucken sweet!
Pat, I just bought your book. Personally, I’d rather just give you 10 bucks, but whatever. Go have a cheesebuger on me.
He made the same presentation that appears in backside of the book. It’s mading sucess this book here in Portugal, I’m reading it too, so fucking amzing! waiting for the second!
I’m portuguese and I have to agree with you, this trailer is “kickass” (parte tudo; in portuguese)!! I’ll try to translate it for you:
“My name is Kvoth. I have saved princeses from the “Unwaken” Tombs, caught Trebon on fire. I have passed the night with Felurian and left with sanity and life. I was kicked from College at the age which most students are admited. I have walked paths at the moon shine that others are afraid to pronounce during the day. I have talked to gods, loved women and wrote songs that make the other composers cry. It’s possible that you heard of me, this is my legend. Do you want to know the truth? Worst for you…” This is not a perfect translation, but it was what I could do for you. ;) For those who think portuguese seems russian: it is not! The only thing that may sound russian is the voice’s tone, a little much “dark”, but russian? NO!
PS- Good luck, Pat! :D
I’m from Portugal and I really like the trailler of the book, but the voice… we don’t talk like that! LOOL
And he is saying the plot of the book.
I’m really looking forward to read the book!
WOW…. now THAT is a promotion! My god… so intense, so… just wow. They had better like it over there, Pat!
And yeah, I don’t think I have ever seen a commercial for a book like that in the States. Unless they make it into a movie, of course. That was just plain freakin awesome!
Yeah why don’t we do trailers and posters for books here in the states? We should promote them like we do movies.
This is why I didn’t know about Name until 2008!!!! Perhaps if I would have seen a trailer or poster about it…
This looks more like a movie trailer than a book commercial, the fanciest book advertisement I ever saw before this was a nicely illustrated poster in the london underground..
In other words, I think it’s awesome!
WOW. That rocked. The feel of it was totally on target; I even liked the voice used.
If that doesn’t make you want to read the book in any language, you must be bloodless.
That was really cool, im guessing its saying, “Ive stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of treborn….” etc etc cos iheard trebon and Felurian in there lol. That sounded pretty intense if i heard that in the UK id be a happy happy boy
I have to say it, even tough I’m brazilian(and thus have little affinity with the portuguese people, thanks to my history class), but damn, they did a pretty awesome job! I just finished reading the book(my new record, around 10 hours straight) and want to open it again o/
congratulations, both Pat(may I call you that? I’m rather lazy to remeber names longer than 5 letters…) and portugal(can’t really make it small…)
by the way, hello, I’m new here and it seems I’m rather late… well, I did find this blog only after I finished the book…
