It’s a grey and rainy Monday in my little corner of the world, and I’m fighting off the last of a cold that makes me feel thick-witted and dull.
Then I ran across a video I’d seen months ago, and my day was suddenly that much better.
I know it might be old news for many of you, but it tickled me (figuratively).
Here’s THE LINK, if you’re interested. I think I’m going to watch it again, come to think of it…
…. yeah. That’s the stuff. I guess I just needed some jazz hands today.
Oh Neil Patrick Harris, my love for you grows with each passing day. Is there anything you can’t improve by your very presence?
And just so you know, I spent hours last night drawing the winners for the raffle, so some of you might be getting a call or an e-mail today.
Later all,
pat

Oh, I can’t wait to find out what names you’ve chosen.
And could you maybe, on a blog one day, explain the currency systems you created? It’s something that has always bothered me…
LOVE YOU PAT! Say hi to Oot and Sarah!
That comment was from me, but I hit the wrong key and couldn’t leave my name.
Here it is, should you be curious as to what it is: Ashlee. 8D
(What could you turn THAT name into?)
I love it :)
I can’t wait to find out who won the raffle – I didn’t enter this one cause I had no names in mind, so I’ll save the money I would’ve donated for the next one.
Oh, and in response to Ashlee – Ditto, and maybe the calendar too?
Thank you for cheering me up on a Monday (contest thing is cool too).
This video is fantastic… also did you know that Dr. Horrible is a comic book as well as a video sing along blog! Neil Patrick Harris, i have determined, can do no wrong.
PS you and sarah have the cutest baby in the world!
That video is great. For those interested, Neil Patrick Harris recently began improving Twitter with his presence also, as @ActuallyNPH.
Great video. Saw it ages ago, always enjoy it.
You seem to get colds a LOT. I worry about you, dear.
Funny stuff. Apperently the gay marriage is kind of a thing in the US. Though there are a few states which alow gay people to get married. If not. Holland and Belgium do alow it.
I also understand that this took a bit of the flew away. It makes you laugh in a way that clears your… everything…
Woot, drawing winners, oh wait, my phones off!! Pat, you rule homie!!
Jack Black as Jesus = awesome!
You know that Neil Patrick Harris has a rather awesome Twitter account by now, right? It’s…LEGENDARY.
Ever since you mentioned that if a movie were made he would/should play Bast, I really can’t picture Bast as someone else anymore. Not that I mind. It’s a perfect fit :-)
Good luck to everyone for the raffle!
Neil Patrick Harris and Jesus Christ side-by-side. Just as it should be…
Funny video. Good stuff. Can’t wait to see the new names.
I love Allison Janney as well in this clip, especially the bit where NPH points at her.
I didn’t like the video much at all. Actually, after seeing this and Year One, I like Jack Black much less.
Personally I don’t appreciate the lampooning of a perfectly reasonable perspective, which is that it is ok for a society to uphold the traditional sanctity of marriage which is celebrating the divine union of male and female.
It is kind of grotesque to call people holding to this viewpoint “hate-filled bigots.”
I’m sure Jesus loved gay people too, but that doesn’t mean he would have agreed with or condoned all their lifestyle choices.
Tolerance is not equivalent to Love.
^ Oh please, the “sanctity” of marriage has already been violated billions of times over by divorce and adultery.
I didn’t enter in this raffle, but hope you get over that cold, and always remember to say “i love you” to Oot!
-Germaine
You are too good at finding the best videos on the internet. The Guild, the Legend of Neil, Dr. Horrible, and now a Jack Black Jesus…simply fantastic.
LOL at the sanctity of marriage “already” being ruined.
As if that was an excuse or rationale for anything?
You’re right. Marriage has lost a tremendous amount of its meaning over the past few generations.
It is quite remarkable really. So, let’s try to fix that, shall we? Or we can just radically redefine what marriage means and thus try to deal the killing blow.
haha Jack Black is hilarious. Anyway, I hope you found some extremely awesome names for the book; can’t wait to see what they are. May fortune smile upon you.
~Vinny~
Hope you feel better soon!
NPH and Jack Black and Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk = LOVE
Anonymous … thanks for your “tolerance” of my lifestyle. Seriously it makes me feel much better, that enshrined in your sanctimony and hung with all the legal rights your heart could possibly require, you find enough still in that heart to allow me to actually be.
My world is so much fuller knowing that I’m loved by Jesus, tolerated but not loved by you, and condoned by neither of you.
Cause you know, you and Jesus are of the same mind, despite that 2000 years of actual separation.
Thanks. :)
Thanks for posting this Pat. I think it’s hillarious. it cheered me up a little bit after the trgedy that was prop 8.
@Anonymous: Thanks for believing in your views so much that you courageously posted anonymously.
Must take a big straight man to do that.
@Ralpo: I support you, and the Episcopal Church welcomes you. :)
“tolerated but not loved by you”
Ah, Ralpo, me lad. Who was saying they don’t love you? All I said was I think it is acceptable to believe that marriage can be a social institution solely devoted to celebrating the union of male and female.
The problem with the kind of “dialogue” this video represents, is it paints a picture of hate that all too many are willing to believe.
This isn’t a struggle about civil liberties. It is simply a struggle of moral perception. Figure that out and we can learn to disagree like adults. But what are the odds of this nation learning that?
Awesome about the raffle being all finished – I still can’t believe the amount of attention you give your fans. Though it is not unprecedented, it is certainly not unappreciated by us. Thank for *living* your contributions to the world and not just writing about them.
Ralpo, Anon – this really isn’t the place. Yippee, we have differing views and can play a “Whose rational is bigger” game, but is it really worth it to do so on a comment board on an authors blog with a whopping 25 posts on it? Yeah, seems kinda pointless when you look at it from that perspective, and it would only be rude to Pat.
The video was certainly cute, but meant for a specific audience. If you don’t happen to like it, then you are certainly not that audience.
But I digress.
Once more Pat, thanks for your contributions to the world; literary, compassionate, outgoing, and accepting. Best of luck with Oot, raise the little one well!
Wow! That is so exciting! I should start answering my calls just in case.
And there is nothing that Neil Patrick Harris can’t improve with his presence!
So, am I perhaps the only one who had to google (or in firefox-space “kwi-click”) nph? A quick scan through IMDB revealed that I had only seen one thing in which he’s ever been (and holy-cow, he’s been in a lot), and that was the heinous movie version of Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers”…not exactly a stellar (pun intended) advertisement for him.
Can someone please expound on what makes him so amazing? (I didn’t watch the video since I have “issues” with videos loading correctly on my machine.)

one word: Doogie Howser MD and Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog
Jazz hands save the world. :)
I don’t really want to feed the troll (or be one), but to Anonymous I have to respond that upholding a marriage’s “sanctity” and a union’s “divinity” is the business of a church, not a society. A society just needs to figure out what is most fair and beneficial for all its members. So if we’re going to have a civil marriage, I think it needs to be free of church trappings (like the aforementioned sanctity and divinity, and, um, probably the traditional patriarchy). That out of the way, hooray for the Choosing of the Names, which brings us that much closer to the arrival of Book 2! I am so jazzed for its publication – it’ll be totally worth the wait.
Love the clip..
Though, Pat, I was wondering, and this might sound weird and kind of stalkerish, but what shoesize are you and Sarah? And what’s your favourite colours?
I.. um. I hope I don’t come across too weird. :D
Wait, I can’t sell my daughter into slavery?
Shit. Now you tell me. I wonder if I can get a refund…
@Anonymous
“Personally I don’t appreciate the lampooning of a perfectly reasonable perspective, which is that it is ok for a society to uphold the traditional sanctity of marriage which is celebrating the divine union of male and female.”
It’s quaint that you cling to those iron-age superstitions. If your chosen brand of religion preaches discrimination that’s their business, but in the 21st century, how is it any business of the government to tell you who you can marry? If you’re opposed to gay marriage, don’t enter into one.
Interestingly, it is a society’s prerogative to determine what its “business” is.
Our society has decided to make a big deal over the definition of marriage, so … It is quite reasonable to bring words like *gasp* sanctity, divinity, or meaning into the discussion.
Religion, faith, philosophical views, etc., these are aspects of a society, they don’t exist in some magical bubble separated from the other aspects of our lives …
As far as posting “Anonymous” would you like my home phone address/phone-#? It is convenient to not have to create a user account.
As far as the appropriate place, 25 posts, etc., I chose to make my voice heard here. Aren’t you glad we live in a free country where speech is protected and we have access to such wonderful tools as the Internet?
Pat chose to use his pedestal to introduce a highly controversial topic. This forum should thank me for reminding you that every coin has more than one side. You do not do justice to yourself or anyone by believing this is a one-sided issue and only narrow-minded hate-filled bigots can hold an opposing viewpoint.
I like Pat. I like his book. But I don’t like one-sided arguments that lampoon their opponents as all money-grubbing, power-loving, ignorant hypocrites. There are a lot of reasonable people, that are not haters, that believe marriage should not be radically redefined by our society to apply to all civil unions.
BTW, I’m perfectly fine with government staying out of the definition of marriage. Then your church or whatever can marry whoever they want. But, whether I like it or not, the government has been dragged into this sordid affair, and so many like-minded individuals feel it is necessary to voice our social viewpoints.
Nothing wrong with that, is there?
Please, guys, this is not a place for a theological or moral discussion about the merits of certain relationships. It was a video made to be humorous – and as such it was offensive to certain trains of thought. We all understand this – if a person is offended, then the reasons for that offence are probably understood and do not need further explanations or justifications.
Say you liked the clip. Say you didn’t like it. Say you are happy about the raffle and names. Say you wish Oot the best. But come on, people, lets not be so rude to Pat as to clutter his blog with pointless squabbles which will lead us nowhere.
To the others; forgive my feeding the trolls.
@ Rip
*gasp* How can you say “Starship Troopers” was heinous? I thought it was deliciously satirical and full of social commentary. My wife and I saw it on a whim, walked out of the cinema, and then straight back in to watch it again.
All those times i said i was gonna call those women back, only to throw the number in the trash are finally coming back to haunt me.
Pat, you never called. I feel…..neglected!
GoGo choclate ice cream (they tell me it helps)
Why call me a troll? A troll incites because they just want a reaction. I speak not to hear the sound of my voice, but because I think what I have to say should be heard. But … you can call me a troll if it is a Shadowrun kind of troll rather than the Tolkien kind …
Sorry if you feel this was not the appropriate place for this discussion. I didn’t bring the topic up … Pat did. And, it is a good thing if his blog attracts passionate people that care about social issues. Nothing wrong here. Welcome to the Internetz. ;-)
Speaking of appropriate places, I am one of those relatives that talks about politics/religion at Thanksgiving dinner. If you are annoyed with me here, just remember to give thanks over the holidays that you’re not related to me. :-) Peace.
And here’s where there is an indrawn gasp, but Anonymous and I agree on at least one thing.
Dialogue is never wasted.
There was no attempt to troll on either side (I’m pretty sure). As a rule trolling usually has a lot more name-calling and inflammatory language associated with it. ;)
Big changes are made from a lot of small dialogues going on between people who hold differing views. Most things are “insignicant” if you take a long enough view of them Atreus.
Pat may have unintentionally put a cat amongst the pigeons (hell he may have done it intentionally, his puckish humour being the way it is) but having a dialogue via Pat’s website isn’t the worst way to try to elicit change, even a little teenie tiny one.
Act locally, think globally.
Well said, Ralpo! Well said. :)
Found this video a long time ago to. it made me smile to see you liked it too ^^
Ahh NPH how do I love thee. Thanks for that Roth-man you just made my horrible day that much better! Say hi to the wife and little Oot for me (he totally looks like you sans beard ^^)
I am glad to see people actually discussing things here rather than just typing vulgar statements and hitting innocent bystanders over the head with blatantly idiotic arguments. I am however of split opinions over the location of the conversation(s). Both Ralpo and anon. have made the excellent point that it’s a free country and opinions need to be expressed in order to maintain democracy (paraphrasing here, also, assuming that they both live in democratic countries), but it may, perhaps, be a better idea to carry this discussion on elsewhere. Now that the points have been brought up, someone passionate enough about continuing the conversation seriously, could write their own blog and post a link on this site for anyone else who’s interested in joining in or following the discussion. That way, people that want to go onto Patrick Rothfuss’ site and read the comments aren’t upset by people having some huge back and forth about a problem that, as of yet, has no real foreseeable solution and isn’t really connected to Patrick Rothfuss any more.
Just puttin’ my 2 sense in.
@Anonymous:
I have no problem that same-sex marriages are not accepted by many churches. The problem is, that marriage is not only ‘a divine union of man and woman formed by god’. It is a civil union with many rights (taxes etc.) and mutual obligations of the married couple. This is valid regardless of religion (if any) or the intent of having children.
And if two people of the same sex choose to spend their life together why would you deny them the right to care for each other the same as an atheist childless couple (and for arguments sake let this be a man and a transsexual woman)?
“It is a civil union with many rights (taxes etc.) and mutual obligations of the married couple. This is valid regardless of religion (if any) or the intent of having children.”
This. Stop being such a bigot, anonymous.
The fact that it made you spew bullshit only proves its genius ;)
Here endeth the hatefest!
anyway, video was interesting,
congrats on the $20k good luck with the name picking
RKS
GAY RIGHTS FOR GAYS!
you guys are awesome, natural and should have every right us hetero’s do.
It’s a free world…right?
That was funny stuff.
I think Jack Black is the dogs bollocks. I went to see Tenacious D in Glasgow, and they rocked. The guy seriously has a great rock voice. And, their merchandise is brilliant. I got a Bigfoot is alive T-shirt, and a spunk rag……I’ve never worn the T-shirt.
I bet you never thought a simple funny would blow up in yer face like that, Pat. I got a great laugh from that too!
Where I’m from, it’s a cause for celebration if you get anywhere near the Devils chimney. What ever floats yer boat, I suppose.
Much mirth was had today.
Cheers Pat.
Wow that musical song would fit so well in the musical Avenue Q!! Have you seen it?
I couldn’t stop laughing and I’m not even american….
I didn’t recognize the name Neil Patrick Harris, but how could anyone not know that face?? :D
Good luck with the raffle to us all! <3
Daniella
Waiting on that call Pat… ;)
@ Jessi:
“That way, people that want to go onto Patrick Rothfuss’ site and read the comments aren’t upset by people having some huge back and forth about …”
People that want to go to Pat Rothfuss’ sie and read the comments … don’t have to be upset by anything. If they want to be upset, they’re going to be upset. Moving the location of the discussion accomplishes nothing. Except for silencing my voice. Which doesn’t particularly feel like being silenced yet. So, no thanks, I don’t buy your points.
@ Chris:
Of course you’re conflating marriages and civil unions in your argument. The law can, sometime does, and IMO *should* allow any kind of civil union to be entered into by consenting adults.
But that is not what this is about, is it? This isn’t about benefits. That is so nineties in a civil unions sort of way. This is about acceptance and approval. This is about forcing society to mark gay marriages with a seal of approval. Thus the controversy with people that believe it is reasonable for society to spend its efforts reinforcing the basic heterosexual family unit rather than championing some bizarre notion of equality without comparability.
A tip of the hat to anyone who really understands what I meant with those last three words …
@ Erik:
All I have to say to you is, sorry, sir, you don’t have a clue.
wow. i just got up and ran out of milk and that made me really grumpy… ^.^ but that video just totally made my day!
neil patrick harris AND jack black (even though i didn’t need another reason to love them) – what more does any musical piece need!? xD
other than that, i hope you’ll feel better soon and also i hope the book is making progress (no pressure ^.^) – i just can’t read any other fantasy book at the moment, because after ‘the name of the wind’ everything seems so childish and unworthy. x)
anyway, lots of love from austria again!
@Anonymous:
It is about both. The rights and the acceptance. And there is no argument to withhold the rights.
The acceptance part is more difficult when it comes to the people but the state should not have any say into what kind of lifestyle is acceptable. This is similar to the interracial marriages in the beginning of the last century. Of course they only wanted to enforce ‘traditional heterosexual family unit’.
Anonymous’s comments read better when you imagine him with Doctor Orpheus’s voice. “I speak NOT TO HEAR! the sound of my voice, but BECAUSE I THINK WHAT I HAVE TO SAY SHOULD BE HEEEEEARRRD!”
i love Neil Patrick Harris too, especially in the show How I Met Your Mother. And that video was hilarious. Thanks for sharing Pat!
Oh and hello to little Oot and Sarah too! Hope all is well.
I’m posting under my name to say that I’m a dumber dude for having seen that video. At least two talented men wasted a perfectly good afternoon in making it.
That said, smile! The world is awesome!
Yes! Neil Patrick Harris is part deity, I am convinced. And who dares not say a myriad of complimentary things about Jack Black? Fools, that’s who!
Love your taste in actors, and your books, Patrick. Thanks for posting this.
~Jonathan from Ottawa
P.S. Neil Patrick Harris would be the perfect Bast – definitely.
I would have loved to have seen this video last year when California had to vote on Prop 8. Probably wouldn’t have swayed any votes but sure is hella funny. Maybe we’ll have the chance to get rid of Prop 8 soon enough.
Thanks for the laugh Pat!
If you liked the video, check out Lily Allen’s F*** You…I have to play it over and over again…
I totally used this video is a presentation to my cultural issues class! I a glad you love it too.
Also I would like to tell you and Sarah that I am contributing to Oot’s university fund. Not out of the kindness of my heart, sadly, but more because I keep on lending the Name of the Wind away. I may have purchased upwards of 10 copies. So when Oot descides to major in doily making… well to each his own, and I will feel like I am contributing to his dream of being the most lauded doily maker in history!
Thanks for rockin so hard! (Come to Vancouver? Vancouver island? Nanaimo? Even seattle! We would love to see you!)
