Those of you who read last week’s blog about the Gaiman-Day scale of coolness might be interested in this picture:
These are just the weekly stats, and my numbers are artificially inflated by my recent blog post. But still, if you’re like me, it’s nice to get to play with the cool kids, even if it’s just for a week or so.
In other news, we’re still dealing with the aftermath of this year’s fundraiser. It’s going a lot slower this year because we’ve got WAY more stuff to sort, package, and ship out.
Just to give you a basis for comparison, this was our prize shelf last year:
I was really proud of that shelf and all the authors that contributed to it. But still, you can see that a lot of the books on there are mine.
These are our prize shelves this year…
Huzzah.
This doesn’t even include all the swag from Subterranean Press, as they’re shipping out their own books. (God bless them.)
Try not to be distracted by the extreme coolness of my brick-and-board shelves which, I would like to mention, I put up by my very own self.
As you can see, a *lot* more authors chipped in this year. Which gives me a warm, glowy feeling of goodwill toward the entire sci-fi & fantasy community. It goes without saying that the donations from DAW and Gollancz made a world of difference, too.
And just so you know, we’re not contacting all the winners beforehand. It would be *way* too much work. You’ll know you’ve won something when a package shows up in the mail. Please don’t e-mail to ask if you’ve won….
[Edit 2-2-10 Answers to a few questions:
I’m not going to post up a list of everyone’s names that that won, because not everyone wants their name posted up on the internet. Just in case any of you were wondering, it’s not cool to post personal information about people on the internet without asking first.
I’m not going to e-mail everyone asking if I can post their info up on the net either. Because, well… duh.
What I will be doing is asking folks to take pictures of themselves and their prizes, then we’ll post them up here. That way, even if you didn’t win something yourself, you can live vicariously through the joy of others. That’s kinda what worldbuilders is all about.
The big winners I’ve already contacted personally. The people who won Gaiman and Sanderson’s books, as well as the guy who won the golden ticket. I’ll be putting up some information about them, if they’re cool with it.
We can ship to PO boxes just fine. Don’t worry about it. If something is strange or confusing about your address, rest assured that we’ll contact you to sort it out.

More blogs on the way….

Huzzah!!!!!
Nice shelves, Pat.
(Imaginary tip of the hat) Bravissimo to thee, mr. Rothfuss, Ye of the Russian-dictator style beard
Whoa, that’s a pretty epic selection :D
Will you tell us ‘All prizes have been shipped, if you don’t receive anything then you won’t’? That would be a relief, I think.
Aha…I wonder if that’s one of Pat’s “Golden Tickets” shining so brightly behind those curtains…or if it’s just a window.
Huzzah indeed! Pat, those shelves are the epitome of coolness. You rock!!! and those prizes – wow. Looks like you’ve truly outdone yourself this year :) Congrats Pat, awesome job. Looking forward to said more blogs too. Say hello to little Oot for me! Has he been any help in all this craziness?
Take that IKEA shelf department! :p
Gz on the epic assortment of stuff!
I am fairly impressed with the sheer number of the books on that shelf that I can recognize from the fuzzy picture. Also, the number of them that I already own is staggering.
Nice job yet again Pat!!
I have to say, the first things I noticed were:
-The guitar
-The badassery of those shelves
-oh, and those book things.
Great fundraiser; glad I could chip in, if just a little. Huzzah!
Awesome doesn’t begin to describe the wall =)
Just how much was raised with the auctions, donations, etc.?
The shelves are super. I especially like how you put small bricks in to provide variable shelf height and maximize space efficiency. It seems that you are a fantasy author with engineering skills…what a guy!
Oh no Pat, beware! I don’t mean to frighten you but there appears to be some sort of billowy beige beelzebub threatening to gobble up all of the awesomeness present on the bookshelves; it’s already making quick work of the Creed guit— oh wait that’s just curtains… Carry on, nothing to see here.
Your shelves are ghetto. Ikea.com man.
Will you be notifying the Golden
Ticket winner or will he/she actually
receive it via mail?
Just curious, since I’m not home
for another 6 months or so :D.
Not that I think I’ve won something, I just think that my situation is not that unique…
Great Fundraiser tho!
wait! There was a chair in the prize pool! Aww dammit! I have been sitting on the floor for the past 3 years. Had I known I coulda won a chair, I would of donated at least $100!
Next time, be a bit more clear about the prizes please!
haha I was a bit more absorbed by what the shelves contained than the shelves themselves. But that is sure some damn good worksmanship, Pat. May fortune smile upon you.
~Vinny~
With my mail, I honestly don’t get 5-10% of the packages sent to me. I can get them to track them down for me if I know that a package was already delivered, but if not? I’m probably out of luck. The situation stinks, but it’s one that I am stuck with.
Even if it wouldn’t be until months after the prizes are sent out, is there a chance of doing some kind of notification? Maybe something that doesn’t involve dealing with everyone individually, such as publishing a list of the winner’s, with perhaps just the initials and their city?
I’m totally fine with not winning anything, or winning something and waiting however many months are necessary to receive it, but with this situation I just may never know. If it’s not feasible then it’s not feasible, but if there was any way for us to know that doesn’t depend on people that freely admit that they simply don’t care, then I would be hugely appreciative. Even if there’s nothing to be done, then thank you for hearing me out.
I am so excited!
I really hope to get something in the mail.
And please, for the good of my sanity, please release a “if you haven’t gotten a package, you’re not getting one” missive at some point in the future so that my spirit will not be forced to haunt my apartment’s PO box should I unexpectedly pass into the afterlife.
And then read said missive over a, I dunno, Ouija board so my spirit can hear it.
I giggled when I saw your shelves… Cinder blocks and bricks. You’re now my hero.
(And then the mommy in me comes out and goes wow. Unsafe. Of course having a 2 and a half year old and a 9 month old means lots of things can be deemed unsafe. Such as fingers. Or hair. Or pieces of fuzz.)
Wow.
My dad must have shopped at the same place you did for his shelves.
Bitchin. Cinder block. Shelves. First things I said when I saw the picture :d
So Sunday at midnight-ish I went from Whedonesque.com to Felicia Day’s blog, to the comments on the blog, and then to your coolness equation blog entry…by 01:00 Monday morning I was headed to bed after reading the first 4 months of your blog archives and developing a serious bro-crush on you. After some much-needed sleep I read several more months, then bought The Name of the Wind from Barnes & Noble on my way to work, and read the first 50 pages or so during my break time. Get home at midnight, gotta get up at 06:00 so can’t pick up the book or won’t get any sleep…so I read more blog archives until 02:00. Love the book so far, enjoying the snippits of your life too, wanted to let you know that they have otherwise enlightened a dark and stormy week!

I had never even heard of GoodReads.com before your last blog-post, so I’m created a user and subscribed to you. :)
Thanks for sharing such a good site, Pat. ;)
So if I don’t win anything can I have the shelves : )
At least list the names of the winners. Don’t expect future contests to go so well if you can’t even be bothered to do that.
I just read the first book by Peter Brett and it was excellent. I started reading it at 11 oclokck at night and i had it finished by 3 oclock the next day, though he’s not a patch on you Pat.
In the comments i noticed some people talk about going back and reading from the begining and i was like “One of my favorite set of blogs was from the begining…” I went to look but the alchemy posts are no longer there :( . . . *sigh* Oh how i loved the unrelated desire to watch invader zim. . .
In all of the excitement and glory of donating for a good cause and possibly free stuff, it had slipped my mind to inquire: is the mailing system you’re using able to ship to PO Boxes? If not, would we be contacted and asked for a different address? Also, much appreciation for your hard work in this and all things you-related Pat :)
Some unnamed insider already slipped me a photo of the next years shelves.
Have fun, Martin
P.S. You can see Mr. Cool working at the bottom of the picture.
To Anonymous calling the shelves Ghetto: dude, come on. did you SEE the shelves? Pat is WAY too cool for Ikea.
Dear winners of big prizes: Please let Pat publish your “wows” of awesome overwhelmingness so we can vicariously enjoy. thanks.
Yay!! Hurrah for nerdy people making the world suck less.
And speaking of cool nerdy people…..
LOTS of fandoms have gotten together over the past two weeks to raise money for Haiti. Initiated by the Harry Potter Alliance (an activist group dedicated to fighting “real” dark arts like bigotry and poverty and illiteracy), tons of other fandoms participated, like the Guild, and many authors. They raise almost $85,000 and it’s not over yet. The auction goes till Saturday the 6th. There are some very cool prizes up, including an original first edition set of all 7 Potter books, signed by Rowling.

Damn Pat, what’s with the cinder block shelving units? Aren’t you a gazillionaire by now?
how could he be a gazillionaire when he is matching 50% of donations?
WOW WEE the only thing that would make that look even better is uhhh book 2.
KM
I actually WAS admiring the majestic majesty of your shelves. Right before you said not to. Strong work there in the decorating dept.
NOTE TO PAT (assuming he reads these):
IF you even THINK about CONSIDERING the POSSIBILITY of even BEGINNING to finish the revisions of the next book before you are ABSOLUTELY 100% ready and positive it's positively PERFECT, I will personally come to your house and slap you with a fish. Due to past blog posts I'm guessing that won't be a problem, but I'm just reminding you in case the 14 hour work days are getting to your head. SCREW the publication date. Make it better until you can't make it no better no more.
I'll assume that these have all been sent out now. I don't think I won anything this year either, but that is fine. I got to give to this charity again. Thank you for having this awesome yearly (? hopefully) event Mr. Rothfuss!
Hi Pat,
Sorry it’s taken so long. I won a couple of prizes and have a fantastic photo to send in, but there is no email that I can find to send it to. Could you or perhaps someone who knows point me in the right direction?
Thanks for the awesome fundraiser and prizes.
Sarah
