Thunderdome part II – Kvothe Vs. Aslan

So Kvothe is going up against Aslan right now in round two of the fantasy cage match on Suvudu. What’s surprising is that right now the votes are pretty much dead even. Half for Kvothe, half for the big cat himself.

I didn’t write up a little blurb for the last fight. But I’ve been driving a lot over these last couple days as I go from reading to reading. So I’ve had plenty of time to think about how the fight between Kvothe and Aslan would go.

So I wrote it up this morning and sent it off to Suvudu. If you wander over there, they should have it posted up pretty soon. I’m actually kinda proud of that little scene.

And for those of you wondering who did the cool picture of Kvothe they’re using over there on the site: it’s Kim Kinkaid over at Twirling Dragon. It’s one of my favorite pictures of Kvothe so far.

When Sarah saw it, she said. “Oh. He’s beautiful. No wonder Fela bought him a cloak….”

That’s all for now folks. I’ve got to get back on the road. See some of you tonight at Prince Books.

    Nice.

Very understated. I had to vote for Aslan–him being a God and all (no offenese), but if I'd read your blurb first, i would have voted the other way. Enjoy your trip.

Absolutely amazing. The only problem is, for me reading your writing is somewhat akin to an alcoholic having a shot of whisky, it's so great that I just need more. Basically you've sent me off to reread The Name of the Wind yet again. Thanks for taking up another 3 to 4 hours of my life.

Ahahahaha, way to win over the masses with the threat of no book 2 :D I giggled when it was revealed Aslan was a fan! Here's hoping you make it all the way to the end and then you can have Kvothe fight Jamie Lannister. Now that would be epic, it could be a blurb off between you and Martin!!!
Since I follow both your blogs that would be the greatest thing ever!

Cute write-up. Aslan's concession is inevitable and clearly comes from the logic and wit of Kvothe. Thankfully the god has a heart of gold and wants the second book as much as the rest of us. I’m so thrilled to hear it will be out SOON! Of course, now that I think about it, that other god’s son said he would return soon and it’s been like, uhm, over 2,000 years. Jezz, here’s hoping we don’t have to wait that long:)
    Drive CAREFULLY Patrick.

Bring on Jaime Lannister. Maybe you can not only beat GRRM in getting book 2 out before he dances with his dragons, you can kick his but in the ring.

I can't wait to see both your (and Mr Martin's) version of that battle.

“You would bring your death curse upon me?” Aslan said.

“That’s Harry Dresden,” Kvothe said, slightly irritated.

“Oh,” Aslan cleared his throat. “Right. Sorry.”

Awesome. I'd change my vote, but if it HAD been a fight, Aslan would have won.
hah…i'm sending that to a few of my friends that can appreciate it….
Bookmarking that for future re reading. Great and well done. The best part is that it seems like that may have actually been a possible way for it to go in so many ways….just excellent. Ok, no more bubbling praise. *coughs*

I'm pretty sure that with you plugging for Kvothe personally he should win, considering it's a little impossible for CS Lewis to do the same for Aslan. That said I voted for Kvothe myself because I think he's pretty kick-ass anyway, where Aslan is just sort of imposing.

Heh, Meta-victory was indeed the only way to pull that one off. Good blurb, made me vote Kvothe.

Also it is a good picture too, unlike the one they're using for Rand. He looks like he's just been told about Min's viewing of Aviendha's quadruplets.

I loved the blurb, too, though it snapped my brain a little bit to read Aslan say "frikkin" [in a kind of good funny way]

also, can't wait to see Kvothe vs Dumbledore or Raistlin. If Raist wins I hope Kvothe kicks his ass! I love Dumbledore. Idk what I'd do if they go up against each other. <3

Pat, I hate to say it, and I only mean the greatest compliment by saying it, but I think the blurb that you wrote was better than anything in Name of the Wind. With how strongly connected I am (and I can tell you are to) to Narnia and from reading your blog for a while it was just wonderfully well done and it honestly left me in tears.

Thanks a lot, Pat. Not for just the product of your passion, but for also sharing your life with us. I hope one day we can hang out at a reading or a convention or something and I can thank you in person.

    * reading your moreish prose made me even more hungry for the second book. Damn you, Rothfuss!

    * also, I have more than enough books I haven't already read, but of course I'm now all giddy to re-read NotW. Damn you, Rothfuss!

I was waiting for your blurb to make my choice. I was hoping you'd write it that way, since it was the only way in hell I could vote for Kvothe. I mean it's Aslan. And if Kvothe ever actually did anything to warrant Aslan kicking his ass, (being selected for suduvu's cage match doesn't count), there's no way Kvothe would survive. It's cool that you recognized that with Kvothe's relief when Aslan agreed to forfeit.

*hopes Kvothe and Jamie Lanister come up against each other* Just simply because whilst Suvudu's mini stories/events (what ever you want to call them) yours and GRRM's have been the best by a mile (i suppose that should be expected though). Ok, so initially my attitude was "I like Kvoth and he does have some mad skills, but… but it's frakkin Aslan."

Then I read the story on the site and was so utterly incredulous that it would go down that way that I was about to vote Aslan…

Then I saw the link to your story… and you write well enough to change my mind. As complements go; thats about as good as I get.

I'd hug him to, I remember wanting to when I was a kid and unaware that it was a re-telling of the greatest story ever told.

And unlike the Suvudu post (hey, they tried), you managed to keep in so non-ofensive to everyone sane. I'm really impressed, and touched, and a big giddy.

Rock on, Patrick, keeping rocking on to your unique song.

Hey, to Anonymous who mentioned "ferula" – I don't think it's Cinders' true name. I think the bad guy was naming a punishment to be USED on Cinders, which is exactly why the word evokes "stick". (That was my take on it, anyway, although maybe Pat had a different idea.)

Congrats on having your creation placed on par with Jesus. Its a big achievement. But in reality, what I think these things end up being is a comparison between the worlds themselves, as much as between the characters. Narnia vs. … um kvotheland has a pretty clear winner. In contrast, Paolini's world, and his character, who comes across as more than a little whiny, would definitely lose. But lets say, Kvothe would be paired up against, WoT's Creator figure, i would put my money on the latter.

Wow looking back on what I just wrote, its a bit garbled, but I don't have the will to go back and make it make my point a little clearer, the pieces are there, its up to you to extrapolate.

Kvothe digs a large pit. When finished he covers the bottom of the pit with the the ashes from the spent campfire. Kvothe then places a series of peas around the perimeter of the pit.

Aslan approaches the pit, and looks at the peas. As he reaches down and starts to take a pea, Kvothe kicks him in the ash.

Oh, and please get that character contest up and running – until then I'll be sloughing through the Codex Alera…

That being said, Ged should be his only challenge, as he is also a master namer. HOWEVER, though Ged is wise and powerful, Kvothe has experience with all walks of life, no true fears, and a quicker wit.
Plus lute-break-rage. To sum it up, Ged is good, but if you check it all out, Kvothe beats him in pure stats.

I have to say, as much as I love the books, the only thing we have seen of Kvothe's abilities is that he can whack a Scrael with an iron rod and he knows the name of the wind. Seems he can't do sympathy anymore. Just doesn't seem to have much of a repetoire. As far as knowing the names of things, Ged knows far more Names.

    @Little My said…

I've been wondering for a while if "ferula" is supposed to be some kind of alteration of "ferrum" (aka, iron). It might also be a reference to the papal cross. Or maybe it is meant to indicate an instrument of punishment (like a cane or a stick).

It seems unlikely that it is a reference to the plant genus in the family Apiaceae, although I suppose one never knows.

With my luck, it's something else entirely.

That blurb was an incredible way to resolve an issue that could easily have gotten(and did get) into theological discussions. I love how rather than focusing on Kvothe's naming skills, the blurb shows how he uses his most basic skill, his wit, to win.

One thing that confused me though: In the scene of the blurb, is Kvothe an adult or a child? He talks and acts like he does as an adult, but I don't see why he'd have a dirty face and ragged clothes. Those seem to indicate Tarbean or University Kvothe.

    Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

And let me just say how EFFING PATHETIC you've made me feel when even that small scene was enough to temporarily cure me of my Name of the Wind withdrawal. >.<

There's no hiding my Rothfreak status now.

BTW, if you look at the age during the battle royale thing, he';s mid tweties ish. which means he's younger than he is in the Waystone, but older than he is during the University. and seeing as it says something about kvothe only being in the town for a couple months or a yaer or something, it can't be after he lost his powers.
    And @ Mike:
Ged doesn't know more names. Simply put, Ged has to sit and read and memorize the names. Kvothe can just sorta see the object and know the name. like everything is labeled with it's name.

Kvothe's age is actually a really interesting issue, I think. I am not convinced that there is not something seriously supernatural going on there.

Everyone talks about how young he looks; the Chronicler is surprised by how young he is, etc. He certainly could be that young, and that might be the way it turns out, but I bet he isn't. I guess I'd probably put my money on his having spent a long time in some supernatural realm during which he did not age.

Anyway, the upshot of that of course is that I don't think we should be taking Kvothe's appearance in any capacity, even in periphery fiction by the author, as evidence of his age. The fact that in K v A, Kvothe is written as clad almost in rags is also interesting.

I think what Pat was doing with that blurb was putting Kvothe at where we know he is *now*, as in the end of the book. I'm sure he is mindful of what he does and does not put in the blog/blurbs and did not want to give up anything more.

Also, quarterfinal matches are up! Vote or die!

To anonymous, about ferula – I was totally thinking "stick" because a ferule (English word) is specifically a stick used for punishment. So I figured it was some variant on that. But I guess Pat can chime in if he feels like it, if he ever gets back from his road trip. (Bad enough I have NOTW withdrawal, but now I'm getting blog withdrawal. . .this is pathetic.)

Hummm… I envy Dumbledore! I bet Kvothe's hesrt must taste delicious, and the feel of the blood from the still pumping valve probably adds to the experience…

Wait, is this disturbing? Naahh, I guess ya'll feel the same way :)

Go vote! it's 55% 44% in Kvothe's favor! If we can make sure he win's, in the next round it will be Kingkiller vs Kingslayer!

re: being dressed in rags . . I'd just assumed that Kvothe deliberately made himself look as ragged as possible, to inspire more sympathy from Aslan :P

Thank you, Mr. Rothfuss, for treating both characters with respect. It felt so nice to see Aslan shown as being GOOD . . without losing sight of his PERSONness.

. . dunno if that makes sense :P

Wait… is the love of your life shipping Fela? If so, I do not know what to say. Hopefully you have some interest in the Kvothe and Denna pairing because I do not think I could stand it if I discovered I was being delusional about another pairing. Of course I would never even dream of telling you how to write your own books. It's just that Kvothe and Denna seem to be so similar. It almost seems as if you created the two characters for one another. Plus Denna brings the fun!

The nerve of some people. To even consider the idea that Dumblesnore could beat Kvothe. Granted, I'm not one of those who think that Dumbledor is some crackpot stumbling about. He is very smart and very stratigic. But eversomore is Kvothe. I don't believe the suvudu peeps have read NOTW, cause if they had they would have realized that Kvothe doesn't just speak Names, he is also a fighter and a swordsman and a wonderful tactician. I'll have to think of some story of how Kvothe would win, b/c it would be one hell of a fight but Dumbledor just doesn't have it in him to kill someone nor would he have an interest in winning at all. He has his own castle/school to worry about rather than some tournament. So far Kvothe is in the lead and it stays that way. Kvothe all the way!!!! Cheers to you Mr. Rothfuss, I'll drink a pint to the wins so far.
