Does Anybody Out There Give a Shirt?

Question: Who would be interested if I made some t-shirts?

It’s an idea I’ve been toying with for a while. Last year I was thinking of making some for Worldbuilders. But things were too hectic.

Over the years I’ve even seen a handful of  homemade NOTW t-shirts at conventions and signings.

Then, just a couple days ago, I was showing some people an ARC of “The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle” and a guy said he’d like a Mr. Whiffle shirt. Two or three other people instantly chimed in that they wanted one too.

Some people have even sent me links to shirts that they had made online at Zazzle and Cafepress. While I’m fond of the ones that say, “Fanatical Minion” and “I (heart) Bast,” this one probably has to be my favorite:

(I remember there was a story that went along with someone wanting this shirt, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was. You’d think that would be the sort of story a person would remember….)

All this seems to indicate an interest in t-shirts. But I’m not sure *how much* interest…

So I ask again: Who would be interested if I made some t-shirts?

By interested I mean interested-enough-to-maybe-actually-buy-one, NOT interested-enough-to-look-at-a-picture-of-the-shirts-when-I-post-them-on-the-blog.

I know a lot will depend on the design and price and all that. (They’ll probably be about 20 bucks, so I can print them on nice-shirts instead of flimsy crap. Proceeds will probably go to fund Worldbuilders.)

I ask because getting them done will take some doing. I’ll need to figure out designs, set up a store, have them printed. My lovely assistant Valerie will be handling most of the work… But still, it will be an investment of time and money on my part, and I don’t want to go through the work unless I know people are really interested…

Originally, I was going to post up a poll asking this question. Then I realized getting people to leave comments below would be better. It’s easy to click a button, but if someone actually cares enough to leave a comment, that shows they’re really interested.

A third and final time: Who would be interested if I made some t-shirts?

pat

Edit: Mentioning your size wouldn’t hurt either. (And if you want girl-shaped shirts). That will give me a rough idea of our proportions for the order.

Later Edit: Just to be clear, I’m not planning to have the shirts say, “I slept with Pat Rothfuss.” The shirt design has yet to be determined. (We’ll probably vote on it here in the blog.) I just posted up that picture because I thought it was funny.

Unless people *want* a shirt that says that, of course. It certainly wouldn’t hurt my reputation. And I’m guessing most of you have been in bed with my book at some point, so it wouldn’t even be a complete lie…

Im loving the ‘I slept with’ t-shirt as I’ve spent many a night in bed reading the name of the wind. You could do pj tops! You would def need a womans type top at mens shirts look awful on us and i want to show off the top once I get it. Keep up amazing work!

Yes, I would absolutely buy a t-shirt. Womens style PLEASE! The other kind look horrible on me. I’m 7 months pregnant right now, so I might have to buy a large and a medium depending on how much baby weight I lose.

I would get one! And I’d get one for my dad, too. I’m a large in girlie shirts and medium in manly shirts. My dad is 4x; he wears manly shirts. Color doesn’t matter, as I usually dye shirts with great designs and wretched colors (like white or pink). Great idea!

    Pat, this has to happen.

Not only does the world need to know ‘I Slept With Patrick Rothfuss’, it needs to know it blazing across my man-chest in clear Helvetica font. I would buy eleven of those shirts without hesitation, one for every day of the week, and four as gifts to the deserving.

I heartily endorse any such t-shirt endeavors.

I’d definitely be interested in a shirt. Are you looking at doing some women’s tees, or just the generic men’s/unisex tees (which, incidentally, don’t fit women of… ah… substance very well, if you know what I mean)?

      • Posted June 7, 2010 at 12:45 AM | Permalink

We could probably work something out. The expensive thing is getting the screen made, and after that is done, it can go on any size shirt. If we end up doing this, drop me an e-mail and we’ll make sure to include a shirt your size if you really want one.

As another big guy (6′ 6″, 400-lbs, 6X), I can attest to the difficulty in finding clothes of any kind in my size, but especially cool ones like pretty much any NOTW shirt would be.

I would buy a shirt despite my impoverished state and pending wedding. I would like a woman’s medium. And when I say woman I mean a human woman. Because I have bought shirts before (and they do tend to have geeky things on them) that claim to be Large or Medium but are more like an arm warmer.

However, you don’t seem to be the kind of guy who assumes everyone is 5’2″ and 85 lbs so this probably wouldn’t be a problem with any shirt you sold.

  16. Posted June 7, 2010 at 12:46 AM | Permalink

I agree with Steve above: I’m more likely to buy a bookish shirt.

    Sizewise, I’m a women’s S, unisex XS.

And before this gets out of hand for your poor assistant (who will tally all these responses): you could ask people to fill out a survey (Shirt: Yes/No; Size: XS/S/M/L/XL/XXL) that includes a mandatory Relevant/Witty Comment field. You’d weed out impulsive button clickers, but have easily usable data at the end. Just sayin’.

    • Posted June 7, 2010 at 12:55 AM | Permalink

That’s a good idea. I’ll probably do that once I’ve determined if enough people are really interested…

I’ve never personally understood the draw of themed t-shirts. Funny ones are OK (on other people) but I cant say I’ve ever seen a shirt who’s design/text was a major factor in my decision to buy it – usually I just want a particular color.

Maybe something more unique? I’m trying to think of something I’d actually buy besides a book and failing, this may be because I am a terribly boring person however. (Though the thought of a grinning Elodin bobble head made me chuckle)

You can definitely put me down as a “No” for a shirt though… :(

Gotta say that (for me) it always depends on the quality of the shirt. If it not only says something I’d love to advertise – like you, Pat, and Kvothe and whatnot – but also looks awesome doing it, then HELL YES! And I’ll pay ridiculous sums for it. If it’s cheesy and cheap, but still costs $30… not so much.

Yes, please! Though I agree, something other than white would be nice. And size depends on the shirt supplier, really – american apparel, who get used for this kind of thing fairly frequently, means I’d want a 2 XL. Hanes, XL. Specially trained silk worms who also weave the shirt and do the design, who knows?

  34. Posted June 7, 2010 at 1:07 AM | Permalink

Aw, yay, thanks for the edit about girl-shaped shirts! As a nursing mum, “unisex” shirts just REALLY don’t cut it (or do the ladies justice, for that matter). So since there’s now an actual possibility of girl-shaped shirts, I’d be an XL (sometimes even a 2X depending on the shirt – that’s more of a length issue than anything; being 5’10” sucks sometimes) in the girl-shirts and will most assuredly be buying one! Hooray!

I would be interested in buying a girl-shaped tshirt, but it would have to have a scooped neck and not just be a smaller version of a man’s tshirt (seriously, no girl looks good in a high-necked tee). Also I rarely wear white…

Maybe look into doing an iron on transfer or a sew on patch. Might be cheaper?

+1 in mens medium if you can ship it to Canada.

Hoping for a design that’s more than just a plain rectangular graphic. Those shirts typically fail to interest. Getting shirts shipped is quite a pain, not to mention more expensive than buying off the rack. It’s therefore necessary for the shirt to be extra awesome to make it worth it (even if that means paying a bit extra).

I can’t think of any other book I’d buy a shirt for, but if the design was good, I would definitely get a shirt. It’s too bad there’s no way to make a giant rectangle printed on a black tshirt look good, or I’d just recommend using the awesome hooded man/broken tree book cover.

Anyways… If you can come up with a better design idea than mine, I would purchase it. Most likely in mens large.

Someone on your facebook made a comment about Jackass. That could make a cool shirt. The Jackass lyrics printed in some old timey font on the back of a black shirt. It could work with or without a background. Maybe a scroll or something.

Shirts would be amazing, only if, naturally, they are amazingly made. Although even I, a heterosexual male, would love to sport the shirt you have posted for all of my friends to see because you and your creations are just so fucking awesome, I would like it to be in something a bit more… elegant, I guess. I’m not sure of the capabilities you have for making these shirts, but perhaps something more than just text on a white shirt would sell more and look better; maybe include some floral designs like the ones on your website, or some fan art of Kvothe and the others, or have one with the Draccus from Phil McDarby’s poster.

And I’m a medium. I don’t wear V-necks, but I’d just like to point out that some people may prefer V-necks over crew-cuts. And athletic fit over plain shirts.

    I’m counting down to March 1! 3, 2, 1, let’s jam!

I’d definitely go in for a shirt, especially so if it’s for Worldbuilders. I’m a S or M depending on the shirt.

Also not sure if it’s something you’d be interested in or if they would be interested in it for that matter, but instead of doing the screen and printing yourself the people at Threadless might be into the idea of a charity shirt. They do a lot of cool stuff and I immediately thought of them when I read this. It’d probably make Valerie’s life easier if it worked out as well.

I would want one but I’m on the fence about buying one as I’d need to factor shipping (uk) into it too and then I’m looking at closer to £20 which is a bit much for a shirt. That said, if it’s a really cool/amusing design I’ll be like “I HAVE to have that” and will buy it anyway. I don’t know what design that’d be although I’m in favour of an Elodin related one.

    I’d be looking for a S too.

  52. Posted June 7, 2010 at 1:32 AM | Permalink

Why not do a zazzle or cafepress shop? Then you don’t have to worry about ‘investing’ or sizes. You upload the design and people buy as few or as many as they want, they ship off the shirts (no fooling with S&H on your end) and you get a check to pass onto your cause.

    • Posted June 7, 2010 at 1:42 AM | Permalink

Unfortunately, those shops tend to be really expensive. I’d feel bad having someone else gouging my readers for 30-35 dollars a shirt.

What’s more, I don’t know about the quality of their shirts, and the amount of money we’d raise for the charity is just a small fraction of what we’ll get if we do it ourselves…

      • Vinny K
        Posted June 7, 2010 at 1:53 AM | Permalink

Yes, I agree with you there, Pat. Those shops would completely rape wallets. And the quality isn’t all that great. One of my teachers at my old high school went that route and the shirts, while not quite uncomfortable, weren’t of the greatest make.

      • Posted June 7, 2010 at 8:48 AM | Permalink

I’ve bought several shirts from Zazzle (they have those size 6Xs available in a couple of colors) and, while they are a little pricey, I have absolutely zero complaints about the quality of their shirts. Just to give you a heads up.

I would be willing to pay up to 15 dollars for a notw shirt if it was visually appealing and also something I thought I could wear in public. In other words, greens, browns, other neutral colours are good. Pinks and purples are a no go. Odd lines that should be humorous but aren’t, like maybe something turning the magical means of linking items within notw into a sexual euphamism are also a no go. I’m pretty sure I’m a large but I’d be at home in an xl as well. It would have to be a pretty good shirt for me to go up to $20, (though such is not impossible, I’m just having a hard time envisioning what this would look like.). If there were a detailed visual depiction (eg kvothe in his hood, or a portrait of him, or him playing the lute with sixstring worked into the image somewhere) then that would bring it up to a $25 dollar value for me.

    Would I get a shirt?
Well first, let me say that if I were to get a shirt I would prefer a womens cut with either a scoop or a v-neck in an XL.

But would I get one? That would depend entirely on what it said. With all respect, I *am* a fangirl – I thing NotW was absolutely brilliant and I’m on my fifth read- through… But I’m not so much of a fangirl that I would buy a shirt *just* because you made it. It would have to be clever and speak to my inner geek.

I’m fairly confident that this will not offend you as for some reason when you ask for the truth, I really feel that’s exactly what you want.

I, also, like pumpkin as a color. But it’s odd and not for everyone. But if we are stating preferences, may as well shoot for the moon.

Keep on being brilliant, Mr. Rothfuss. And blow a raspberry on Oots belly for me. It will make him giggle and baby giggles are the best.

I’d buy one, actually I’d buy two. But they’d need to be different designs. I like buying my husband and myself matching t-shirts, but they need to be same same but different. For instance when we got Joss t-shirts mine says “Whedonist” while his has “What would Jayne do? besides bring grenades”. So I’d really like there to be more than one design. I wear a womans L or XL in a fitted (The L fits, but I like a little room) and I buy my husband a XL. Black would be the preferred colour, however any dark colours are good. It might be nice to have something that isn’t black for a change.

And no, I don’t fawn all over other authors I like, too; just you, Pat.

I don’t read a book more than twice (for pleasure–too many books, too little time), but I read NOTW, twice. And I’ll probably read it again just before book II comes out in March.

Any color except white, orange, brown (unless very very dark.)

Also, a 3XL or 4XL Man-Shaped for my very tall son – who, due to my pushy motherly insistence, finally read NotW and is totally addicted and whines every couple weeks (basically after each re-reading) about having to wait for WMF. A cool t-shirt may mollify him somewhat :)

Actually… have you considered doing a line of department-specific shirts for the University? One for Sygaldry, one for Naming, and so on? That might be cool. Or a pub sign shirt for the Waystone or Eolian (a la “The Dude and Catastrophe” http://www.achewoodshop.com/1037.html).

Oooh, this sounds like a great idea :-) I would prefer a women’s fitted in L or XL… Darker colours for the win… Though I, like others here, am in the UK so I’ll need to factor in shipping too.

Speaking of the UK, I was in Glastonbury this weekend and mentioned to my friend (whose B&B we were staying at) about your book. I’m just reading NOTW and loving it :-) And to my surprise she said you’d stayed with them! Small world, huh? I love that B&B, it’s the best in town. I would love to know what you thought of Glastonbury; we’re four hours drive away (near Manchester) but we make the trip there many, many multiple times a year…

Perhaps next time you’re in the UK I could get to see you read or something (because last time, as I found out when browsing back through your blog archive, I was on honeymoon on Maui — hence why I didn’t make it to a signing).

I think this is a great idea! My idea for a design (would need to be a black or charcoal grey shirt): have Folly on his/her mounting board on the front and have Kvothe on the back in a full cloak (but you still see his face) with a lute neck poking up from behind his shoulder and some leaves swirling around his ankles and have “The Name of the Wind” in big red(or orange) scrolling script above or below him. (maybe have the Draccus looming behind him w/ it’s smoldering eyes looming in the background ominously or even Haliax looming in the background) Thought it would look cool, and possibly draw in more readers/followers. =] (P.S. I wear an XL).

I would be very interested. Hopefully international shipping would be an option? If not, I’ll find a way to proxy it out, I’m sure. :)

2x mens/5x ladies for me (I often find that t shirt producers concepts of a large woman and a large man are WILDLY different)

I just made an account so i could answer. :) Yes i would be interested in buying a shirt but will you be selling them to international readers (eg. UK)? If so YES YES YES!! I would like a book themed shirt so something along the lines of the draccus or whatever really. And i would like a woman sized shirt. I am a large in the woman’s size. Here is a link to convert sizes: http://www.usatourist.com/english/tips/womens-sizes.html Thanks. :)

I just registered so that i could say i would totally wear one of your shirts. 3XL tall in black would be excelent. I would especially love eithe one that is book themed or one that is an inside joke only your fans would get.

I would love a shirt. Black NOT white. Women’s Med.
    My vote’s for bookish quote.

“It was the patient, cut-flower sound of a man who is waiting to die.”

That one would be a ripper.

I am another person that created an account just to comment on this. I would love a NotW shirt, with just one caveat; it has to be cool. Now, I know that this seems like an obvious concern (not many people go, “My word, what a humdrum piece of apparel, I must possess it!”), but I don’t mean a picture of Fabio or a quote in white on a black shirt that, while making me break out in goosebumps from literary arousal, means next to nothing to the guy sitting on the bus across from me. However, a shirt with a modern design, something that I could wear under an unbuttoned shirt or even under a suit coat if I were so inclined, would be preordered immediately. Since I am not an artist I will keep all my half-baked designs to myself, but I hope that I have made myself clear, and, if this thing turns out half as cool as I think it will, you can count on one men’s medium being shipped all the way to the little town of Stevens Point from whatever mystical, ethereal realm your publisher has whisked you off to.

I would like this style of t-shirt too! In ladies small! This is very exciting :)

I agree–try to go for one of those cool swirly-vines or something designs that you see on some fashionable men’s shirts (except this could be “swirly wind” or something magical like that :D). Plus maybe a cool, stylized cut that includes Kvothe’s eyes/intense gaze or something.

I think I’d be down for a M size, but honestly, it depends on the price (please try to go a few bucks below $20 if possible… what with shipping costs and all… ^^;;; )

I would love to wear a T-shirt made my you, but it would have to ship to Europe. Woman-shaped, M or L, I’d say, depending on the brand. :-)

I would definitely be interested in a shirt, provided that:
    – it’s in a dark hue and the design is OK
    – it can be shipped to Bulgaria and the shipping costs are less than 20$

I can also talk about it to a couple of friends who love your book. They might be interested too.

    My size: L (USA standards)

Wow! Pat has fans in Bulgaria! Awesome! On a totally unrelated note, one of my two favorite restaurants is Bulgarian. :)
