The Long-Awaited T-Shirt Blog

Back in June, I asked y’all if you’d like to see some Name of the Wind t-shirts.

When the answer came back a fairly resounding “Yes.” I decided to do a T-shirt design contest.

We got more designs than I expected. So many designs I knew I wasn’t going to be able to include all the ones I liked in the voting.

It took a while to sort through them all. Then we ended up having to do a bunch of secondary research as well. Apparently, if you want to sell something on your website, you need a store or somesuch thing.

I know. It’s crazy.

Anyway, we’ve finally got most of that figured out. So now we have the moment of truth. Now I’m going to ask y’all to vote on which shirts you would actually like to buy and/or wear.

You’ll notice that we’ve included a few of the designs that I initially said we were going to pass over. That’s partly there were a few persuasive blog comments and e-mails sent in. Also, Sarah and Valerie stood up for some designs. Sarah loved the little anime Kvothe with his speech bubbles, and demanded that I include him. I’m growing increasingly fond of the little guy myself.

Before you vote, a few polite requests:

  • Let’s not descend into internet jackassery here. We’re better than that. Don’t vote a bunch of times. That’s not cool.
  • If you know deep in your heart that you’re never going to buy a shirt, it would be nice if you didn’t vote. It’s not that your opinion doesn’t  matter…. It’s just that it doesn’t matter in this particular instance.
  • You can vote for two shirts. That means you should vote for the shirt that you’d really love to buy. And then the shirt that you’d love to buy if your first choice isn’t one of the ones we print.
  • When you’re voting, double check the name of the shirt to make sure you’re casting your vote correctly. The name of the shirt is ABOVE THE PICTURE. ABOVE.

A few additional notes:

  • Vote soon. Tell your friends. The poll will be closing in a week.
  • We will be printing at least two different designs. Maybe three.
  • Colors are to-be-determined. (Though the sweet-eating draccus will probably be blue.)
  • T-shirts will be high-quality material, and probably cost around 20 bucks.
  • All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to Worldbuilders.

Later all,

pat

Edit: We will, of course, have lady-sized shirts. Because I want to do something special for all the ladies in the world.

I voted, and I fully intend on buying a shirt.
However I’m going to have to make my own “I <3 Bast" shirt I see.

There were so many I liked, so I guess in the end I'd be pleased with whichever one won.

20 bucks I could spare, but it would be nice to know about how much would the posting cost.

I love the NOTW Speech Bubbles one, but I want it as a poster. I already have it yoinked as a desktop picture, actually, and feel as though I should credit it to the artist. If there was a POSTER of it, I could know who made it and all that fun stuff :)

But yes. Eolian shirt for the win, I’d wear it as often as I could.

“I’m not threatening anyone,…I’m just quoting one of mey favorite pieces of literature. It’s from the fourth act of Daeonica where Tarsus says:
Upon him i will visit famine and a fire.

And all the demons in the outer dark
      Look on amazed and recognise
That vengeance is the business of a man.”

I know the artist for the Kingkiller design and when Pat extended the deadline she resubmitted it with a new awesome font design.

Pat you’ll have check you emails and see if you can dig it up as it improves the overall design 10 fold imo.

I voted for my two favorites – but here’s a question for you:
My kidlet is in LOVE with NotW audiobook – he asks for it constantly and is deeply in love with the story. At a scrawny 9 years of age, even a women’s small is going to be a bit too large on him. Any thoughts on kid sized shirts?

He’s a chess player as well, so I’m excited to see Kingkiller in the top three. :) He’ll LOVE it.

Oh the sadness to see your top picks stuck in the middle ground. Really loved the Lute Design and the Hello My Name Is is so simple in its brilliance. Excited for the shirts none the less, will be buying at least one if not both of the winners.

Someone mentioned it up a bit, but I second the idea for prints of the other designs, if not on posters, perhaps mugs, buttons, dare I say fridge magnets?

Lastly just an idea, but has anyone heard of Threadless.com? Perhaps the designs that don’t get printed, the creators can submit them there and see how well they fare, it’s free, cash prizes, and you never know. Plus their shirts are good quality, they pretty much make up my wardrobe these days. Though I don’t know the legality of it all since these are designs representing a book which probably has copyrights and such.

Disregard the previous lastly, but since proceeds are going to Worldbuilders does that mean the shirts will be out in time for this winter’s donation drive? Excitement.

There are so many great designs here that its hard to choose, I would definitely buy Kingkiller as a poster.

Also an idea, though it may be a bit late for it, some of the designs such as “Hello my name is” and the NOTW Tree and Fancy designs could be put on the front of the shirt as a patch, with the more elaborate designs going on the back. I personally thing that if you did “Hello…” on the front with “Kingkiller” on the back it would look awesome. I don’t know if such a design would change the price though

I’m surprised the “Hello my name is” shirt isn’t doing better. It’s subtle enough that people who haven’t read the book (A.KA. Nonbelievers) won’t get it, but at the same time it should be instantly recognizable to any one of the Enlightened.

I agree whole heartedly. It was definately one of my two. It has the subtleness, but with an almost direct quote from the book, without blaring The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Not that it’s particularly bad to blare out The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I try to do it daily, but there is a time and place for everything.

I love the shirt designs. But I have to say, voting was the hardest thing for me to do. It was, quite possibly, harder than voting in the elections. People change, shirts are forever. Or at least, good shirts are, and these are most undoubtedly good shirts.

If you are able to make these into posters, etc, that would be awesome! I have visions of my apartment covered with them. I’ll be the envy of every NOTW fan on campus. :) Have you thought about other clothing? Hoodies, sweaters, and all those other necessary items needed to keep us somewhat decent? But any of them is just great.. :) I love the imagination of having a NOTW-Shirt *heart it*

I have to admit that I’m walking with the masses on this one. Eolian and the Many Names shirt take the cake…and quite possibly the punch as well on this one…

I have wanted the NOTW cover with the hooded, cloaked figure (American Paperback version is my guess) as a full sized poster to put in a guilded bronze frame with its own track lighting for quite some time so…while we’re talking posters on top of tshirts, lets add that one to the poster list eh??

Awesome! Can’t wait to get an awesome t-shirt. 2 things:

    1. I feel like the Eolian shirt should say, on the book, “Where pride pays silver and plays gold” (or whatever the exact quote is. I know if it isn’t exactly what I just wrote, it’s pretty close to that). That’d be awesome :)

    2. Why does the Names Compilation shirt have words like “burned”, “although”, “knew”, etc.? That one is my favorite design, but I’m just confused as to why those non-names are in there. Just to fill the space? It does look cool, I’ll admit.

    • Tony
      Posted November 10, 2010 at 2:01 AM | Permalink

Spiky, he was burned on his feet and legs when the bone-tar container caused all that hell in the Fishery…just to name a reason why the word “burned” might be on there…

It could also refer to Kvothe’s home burning when the Chandrian attacked the troupe and killed his parents…

    • spikyc
      Posted November 10, 2010 at 11:57 PM | Permalink

Makes sense, Tony, for burned. Still doesn’t make much sense with regards to “although”, “knew”, etc.

Also, I looked up the exact quote. It’s “where pride pays silver and plays golden”. Forgot the “en” at the end of gold :) Seems like a few people like the idea. I know I’d be thrilled if that made it onto the back. Maybe it could be an option, but would cost more? Just tossing out ideas! :)

…and burned the city of Trebon, of a matter of fact…

I am in total agreement–yes, please let’s add that on the back if that one ends up winning (which it seems to be doing). Since these shirts are celebrating the awesomeness of NOTW, we should get a lovely morsel of Pat’s beautiful writing like that on there if we can!

Oh, that Names Compilation shirt is fantastic.

I think I might buy one for every day of the week. :)

Question though- will the winners also have designs on the back if it isn’t explicitly mentioned in the above choices? The suggestion earlier on about the back of the Eolian shirt having ‘Where pride pays silver and plays gold’ written on the back is wonderful. ‘You may have heard of me’ printed on the back of the Names Compilation would also be shiny.

I like the Eolian shirt (which is totally gonna win) but I wouldn’t buy it because people would assume it is an Irish-bar. Coming from England people would think ill of me for wearing it. Not least because I’m a svelte girl with large boobs and it would look terrible! I bet there is a male/female divide in the voting. Breasts are a challenge. Sweet Draccus would do much better in a poll for female tees…Sweeeeeeeetttttsssss……..

I think the fact of its appearance would be a great conversation starter for any poor soul with half a wit left to him…They make the assumption and you correct, thereby educating one more on the grandest place ever to host music..The Eolian. :)

This assumes that blokes are prepared to ask about something emblazoned across a girl’s bosom. Mostly they are just scared. It is a lovely design and clever but I just don’t want to wear something that people will think is a bar. It looks a bit chavvy. I would pay good money for it on a pint glass though, now that would be totally awesome!

Hi! Long time reader…first time commenter. :D I love most of these T-shirts, and will definitely be buying one (or two…or three). But I have the uncontrollable urge to vote for three designs. It’s too hard to choose.

NOTW was one of the picks for the book club I’m in, and we read about 9 months ago. Everyone loved it and now we’re simply dying for the next installment. Of course, I know the wait will be worth every second. ;) Keep up the fantastic work!

This choice was insanely hard. Great options!

I’m really torn between the NOTW Tree shirt (just the sort of cool design with clean, vectorized graphics I was hoping for!) and the Fancy NOTW one with Kvothe’s profile (cuz the art is just gorgeous). What to do?? I wish I could buy one of each (and some of the funny ones like the Eolian too).

I voted for the Fancy NoTW, but I’m afraid that isn’t winning because it might be construed as a feminine design. It’s fantastic, though.

Hmm, good point. Then, Pat, how about making that fancy NOTW one into a bonus girls’ shirt? (even if not now, eventually?) It would be gorgeous–I can picture it now! :D

I’d certainly be interested in one. But it would depend on how much the postage is to the UK. Because I know t-shirts are not cheap to post. I’ve learned this from my plethora of webcomic t-shirts.

Oh, the awesomeness. And what is even better: Sharing the awesome with my peeps by way of t-shirts for Christmas. Such an easy shopping choice, especially since the profits from the gifts go to Worldbuilders, so its like giving TWO gifts!

    Thanks Pat! XOXOX

It’s the Eolian Bar Shirt for me. I really really love this design – but can I very/grovellingly/humbly/tactfully/beggingly (well, you get the idea)…. suggest that it has “Where pride pays silver and plays golden” on the back.

    Yay! The Eolian!

But…sorrow…NotW tree isn’t second place. It’s not that I don’t think Kingkiller is a great idea, I just have visions of preteen girls mistaking me for a twihard somehow. Still…go Eolian.

    Hey Pat,

Let me start by saying that my name is Phillip. I have followed your blog for some time now and I absolutely love your book. I will be ever grateful to my friend for having made me read it. Now, that being said, I have a bit of a favor to ask of you. Though I know this may be asking a bit much; what could I do to convince you that if the Denner Fishing design doesn’t win I could still get a t-shirt of that design? I really enjoy the simplicity of the design and how well thought out it is. Also; I happen to not like shirts that are, how should I say, loud? (Though I’m not saying the other designs are bad don’t get me wrong; they just wouldn’t be something I could see myself wearing) I would be willing to pay a little extra to get it and I appreciate you taking your time to read this (You probably have better things to do I would imagine).

Thanks for being a truly gifted writer,
    Phillip R E Fisher Jr

I would also like to express that while I think all of the designs are fantastic, I was really hoping for an Unlikely Maths shirt.

Unlikely Maths for the write in!

I would love to buy the Bar one, and make my hubby wear it, and then marvel at his geeky hotness…

Funny how I really like certain designs (Fancy Design), but just can’t see myself sporting it in a t-shirt. Mug, poster, sticker, hoodie, but not t-shirt. I’d especially like to have a mug with the Denner toothpaste design on it.

-I’ll also add my unsolicited vote to add the “where pride pays silver, etc.” on the back of the Eolian.

I really love the designs! It was a very hard decision!! But I’ll probably love whichever design wins…

And I agree on the ideas of mugs, stickers and especially posters!

Whoever made the recommendation for “Hello my name is” on the front, with an un-texted version of “kingkiller” on the back…well, frankly, that’s just inspired. Surely we could finagle a way to make that happen…

So my day just got 1000x better :D To all those who designed the shirts, a huge thanks! To all those who went wading through thousands of designs, more huge thanks! To Sir Rothfuss, lotsa huge thanks!

    …I think I’m done now…

    THANKS!

Registered finally after watching the blog for a long time just to comment on this. I’m really hoping the top 4-5 get made as shirts, that being said one of my votes went to ‘Hello, my name is…’ and I hope that makes a surge.

Really I registered so I can add my voice to making this into more than just T-shirts. I would gladly pay $25-30 to turn Kingkiller or Eolian Bar or Denner Fishing into a Hoodie (zip up or solid). I will buy a t-shirt I am sure but I tend to wear hoodies more often than not. Living in Minnesota or the upper midwest in general should be plenty of explanation on that. Posters, mugs and other items sound great as well. Also hoping for an xlt size for those of us a bit taller.

And lastly thanks to Pat for getting this going as well as putting the fantastic work that you have so far. Also have to give a big thanks to all the artists that contributed to this, I will proudly wear any of these great designs.

      Hoodies, oh yeah!

A hoodie with Sweet Draccus as an emblem would be awesome! Oh how I love my Draccus…

Honestly, I’d probably buy all of the top 4 designs if they were made into shirts. I love the Denner Fishing one as well as the Eolian Bar.

I only read a few comments, but saw mention of posters. I think that’d be a kickass idea. The “Names” and the “Kingkiller” ones especially would make great posters, and would definitely be seen hanging in my room if that were to happen.

Good job to everyone who submitted designs, regardless of if yours made it this far or not. I wish I was artsy and could have submitted one :-)

How cool would it be to have the Denner Toothpaste logo on something that could be a tooth brush holder like a mug? Very.
