Before I talk about today’s donations to Worldbuilders, I feel a moral obligation to point out that you only have until Dec 3rd to bid on the professional read-and-critiques we have up on e-bay.
So if you have a manuscript you’re dying to have professionally critiqued, or if you’re looking for the perfect Christmas gift for the aspiring writer in your life: be warned. You only have a few days left to bid….

Those of you who participated in last year’s fundraiser might remember that I had a hard time deciding what to do with a couple cool books donated by Gaiman and Sanderson. Specifically, I didn’t know if I wanted to auction them off to the highest bidder, or put them in the general lottery so anyone could win them.
In the end, I asked y’all what you thought would be best. Most people seemed to want it in the general lottery, because they hoped to win it. But everyone also seemed to agree that they would raise more money for Heifer International if we auctioned them off.
In the end, I ended up putting them in the lottery. Mostly because I’m egalitarian at heart, and I like having some really cool prizes in the mix.
Eventually the fundraiser came to a close. We drew names to see who won Gaiman’s and Sanderson’s books and it turned out that both the winners had donated 120 dollars. Enough for a goat. I contacted the winners personally to tell them that they had won two of the cooler prizes in the auction. Needless to say, they were delighted.
Then something unexpected happened.
Both of the winners offered to donate the books back to Worldbuilders so we could use them again for next year’s fundraiser. But they both said the same thing: that the books should be auctioned off to bring in more money for Heifer International.
Needless to say, I was more than slightly amazed. I mean, personally, if I’d won Gaiman’s book, I don’t think I would have been able to give it up.
All in all, this goes a long way to proving my theory that people are basically good. Sometimes we screw up. Sometimes we’re lazy. Sometimes our animal natures get the better of us. But deep down, given the chance, most people are kind, helpful, and generous beyond all expectations.
Anyway, it’s next year. So I’m putting those books up for auction. In my opinion, these books are even cooler than before because they’ve been donated twice, once by the author, and again by the fans.
- A first edition hardcover of The Gathering Storm, signed by Brandon Sanderson, Harriet Jordan, and many others.
Huh. I just noticed that Sanderson’s handwriting is a little bit like mine. His signature is much cooler though…
Needless to say, this is pretty much a one-of a kind item.
You can bid on the auction for The Gathering Storm over here.
- A numbered, limited edition ARC of Stardust in its own slipcase. Signed by Neil Gaiman.
This is a cool book, folks. I covet.
You can bid on the auction for the Gaiman’s signed ARC over here.
- A hardcover copy of Spectrum 8. Signed my 52 of the featured artists, including Dave McKean, Todd Lockwood, and Charles Vess.
It seems appropriate to include this book alongside these previous two auctions. Not only is it above-and-beyond cool. But it was also donated to Worldbuilders by a generous reader and book collector. It goes without saying that this book is about as unique as it gets.
You ready for the list of artists who have signed their work in the book?
Here we go:
Thom Ang, Brom, Dennis Beckstrom, Nancy Butler-Beckstrom, Frank Cho, Stuart Compton, Mark Covell, Kinuko Y. Craft, Brian Despain, Tony DiTerlizzi, Dave Dorman, Tommy Lee Edwards, Bob Eggleton, Jason Felix, Arnie Fenner, Cathy Fenner, John Van Fleet, Jon Foster, Donato Giancola, Gary Gianni, James Gurney, Richard Hescox, Greg Hidebrandt, Tim Hidebrandt, Joe Jusko, Todd Lockwood, Larry MacDougall, Gregory Manchess, Stephan Martiniere, Tony Mauro, Dave McKean, Christopher Moeller, Steve Montiglio, Jon J. Muth, Terese Nielsen, Glen Orbik, Martina Picerova, Greg Polutanovich, R.K. Post, George Pratt, Luis Royo, Robh Ruppel, Ron Spears, William Stout, Michael Sutfin, Brian R. Thompson, Bleu Turrell, Matt Wilson, Christopher Vacher, Charles Vess, Ashley Wood, and John Zeleznik.
You can bid on the autographed copy of Spectrum 8 (and see pictures of some of the autographs) by following this link.

Don’t forget, Worldbuilders is matching 50% of all donations made on our Team Heifer page until December 13th. What’s more, every 10 dollars you donate to Heifer International gets you a chance to rare signed books like these.
To see the other books and learn more about Worldbuilders, you can head over to the main page.
Stay tuned, folks. In the next week we’re going to posting up more hundreds of donated books, graphic novels, and DVDs. We’ll be doing more auctions too. More general coolness all around.

Please note, if I win, they are not being returned again.
Heh. Fair enough…
I donated more this year in hopes that I get the Gaiman book again. If I do get it, I plan to redonate it just to spite everyone who wanted it yet again.
You may want to take back your bit about people being good in this world. I think Justin here just negated it.
Haha :) Made my day.
And no, it just makes me even more generous!
Muahahahaa!
Wow.
The winners last year are MUCH better people than I am. I got that signed copy of The Warden Man that you also signed, and if someone had asked me to give it back I would have turned into a hissing, feral cat.
I’m going for that copy of Stardust. It gets me all giggly and excited just looking at it.
I think it would be completely awesome if these books were sent back in every year. I think it would also be cool if each winner signed the book in the back. Wouldn’t that rock? Receiving a battered book that had been signed and won by 20 different fans over the years?
that is actually a really cool idea. i like that kind of thing though. kind of got a soft spot for traditions.
after writing that, i really wan that to happen.
Bid time!
Right, i’m considering spending some savings on getting one of these bad boys! The other half will not love it, but its totally worth it.
Bid on!
Cheers
Gruff
Shipping to Spain is 123 USD via UPS according to the link on Ebay.
I really wanted to bid but @USD 123 shipping tariff to Spain … … …
Extremely expensive in my opinion.
On a totally selfish note…any clue as to what your editor thought of the first draft of WMF?
anyone else having trouble donating on the team page? I tried different amounts in firefox and IE with amazon or paypal and i get the error code invalid donation.
I had the same problem a few days ago. I was not going to try again until I knew for sure it did not go through. Glad I did as my credit card shows the charge and I received an email thanking me for the donation.
I hope you did not end up donating each time you tried. :(
First time poster, long-time blog reader and very big fan. I’ve recommended and harped on all of my friends to get your book and they have all thanked me repeatedly. This blog made me finally choose to finally at least ask a question I’ve had for a long time, as you’ve made many recommendations on authors and shows. I’m currently in season 3 of Buffy, 100% due to your Joss Whedon “worship”, and I loved the Dr. Horrible, so thx. I enjoy many authors, but Robert Jordan has been one of my favorites, with the only issue being the series getting a tad drug out, Winter’s Heart being evidence #1. So my question, if you choose to take the time to answer, is what has been your basic opinion on the Wheel of Time series? Thanks for The Name of the Wind and I look forward to Wise Man’s Fear :-)
Hi Pat, I just wanted to be a little voice saying that what you’re doing for Worldbuilders every year is beautiful.
I have a newsletter that goes out to 15K email addresses and I plan to mention your fundraiser on that list soon. I’m 99% sure that’s fine, but if not just let me know.
Sometimes I get really bitter and cynical and think that everyone’s all selfish and self-serving and douche-y.
And then I read stuff like this. Then I feel good.
Wow I would love to win the copy of Stardust, but if I do can I get it shipped by a different method, 80$ for one book from UPS seems a bit extreme.
Hmm…. I’ll check the shipping options. Something might be screwed up there….
Seems to be working fine for me. I’m guessing you live in another country?
Okay so I really wish I was not a broke college student so I could bid on the Stardust book. It’s my favorite book ever. Well, tied with Name of the Wind. But seriously. I would give big bucks for that. :(
You should get the redonators to sign them too, or maybe get a note from them to add in with the shipped books. Of course that means logistic problems and delays. Kudos to the redonators though.
Perhaps not having “Signed” in the description of The Gathering Storm is hurting it’s bids? It doesn’t come up in a search result for “The Gathering Storm Signed”, like other copies do.
See here: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=the+gathering+storm+signed&_sacat=See-All-Categories
You could even one up those by adding “Signed by team” or something.
I wish I could bid in the manuscript critique, but I’m a broke foreign college student who just found out about this excellent oportunity yesterday, so noway I can get the money on time unless I sell about half my organs. Plus, it’s not like my manuscript is anywhere near being finished, but I have a question.
If you do this again next year, are foreign manuscripts valid? I’m a writer wannabe, and my first language is not English, but if I could have it professionally translated, would it be valid for critique? I usually write my drafts in English for practice and one of my best friends is a professional translator, and really, it would be like Christmas in… well, December, I guess. I just want to know so I can start selling art commissions and freelancing like there’s no tomorrow to save money for next year, if it happens to happen (?) again.
Dear Mr. Rothfuss,
What is the difference between joining the Worldbuilders team and simply donating money to the team? I tried and (on account of weariness and good old stupidity) failed to accomplish the former but at least succeeded with the latter. So I hope that doesn’t mean I ruined all my chances to be in the lottery…? Anyway, I hope the 30 bucks I contributed will go a little way to help some family, somewhere!
Wait, who signed Robert Jordan’s name on the book? TGS didn’t come out until nearly 2 years after his death >.>
Both this book and the newest in the Wheel of Time (Towers of Midnight) have Robert Jordan’s facsimile signature printed in the book by the publisher.
Alright, Pat. You can thank the Mormon campaign against Prop 8 in California for my donation. As a non-believing, semi-practicing Mormon, I can’t give my money in good conscience to my church anymore, since they end up using it for stuff like that political battle. But I also still feel like I should give my 10% somewhere. And Heifer really is amazing. Have you been to their awesome HQ in Arkansas? So sweet.
