- Worldbuilders
Well, Worldbuilders is finished for another year. Or rather, it’s finished for you guys. We here at home base still have a lot of finishing up to do. We’ve got to organize spreadsheets, do some number juggling, contact a handful of winners, and do a whole lot of packaging.
We’ll be doing the official worldbuilders re-cap in just a couple days. But here’s the short version: We are awesome.
The slightly longer version is that we’re awesome because we raised well over a quarter million dollars this year. (Over 285,000 dollars.) Way better than my best expectations.
- T-shirts
The main reason for this blog is to let folks know what’s going on with the t-shirts. Both Valerie and I have been getting e-mails about that lately.
For example, last week I got an e-mail from someone who said their shirt took months to arrive.
I responded that I was rather surprised at this, as the shirts had only gone on sale three weeks ago.
I know a lot of you are excited about the shirts, but please keep in mind the true time frame of events here. We started voting on shirts on November 9th. We got all four of them up in the store on Nov 22nd and put in our order with the printer a few days later, after making sure people were actually going to buy them.
Then, ever since the shirts came back from the printers on Dec 10th, we’ve been doing our best to get as many of them shipped out as quickly as possible.
Since the 10th, we’ve shipped out about 600 packages.
As a frame of reference, that’s more packages than we shipped out for all Worldbuilders in 2008:
Plus all the packages shipped out for Worldbuilders 2009:
It is, to put it plainly, a fuckton of packages. And that’s just the t-shirts. It doesn’t even count all the books and posters we’ve been selling out of the store either.
Everything said, we really didn’t know what we were getting into when we decided to do t-shirts this year. Not only did people order WAY more than we expected. But the whole process has ended up taking a lot more time than we’d anticipated. Do you know how long it takes to fold 1500 t-shirts? And that’s nothing compared to how long it takes to prepare the envelopes and package them.
Then comes the post office. You know how long it takes to go through the line in the post office with 200 packages? Some of them going to England, Spain, Germany, Sweden?
Suffice to say you do not want to get stuck behind us in line.
- The Complications
Because this was our first time doing t-shirts, we have had a few complications arise. Apparently, the original graphic we had for the Kingkiller design wasn’t high-quality enough to make a good-looking shirt.
The good news is that the lovely folks as Poseur Ink helped us catch the problem *before* we printed several hundred crap shirts. But the bad news is that it took us a while to contact the original designer and get that straightened out. That means the printing on that shirt got delayed.
After some deliberation, we decided to ship out the orders with everything *except* the Kingkiller shirts. That means if you ordered two Eolian shirts and one Kingkiller, we shipped you the two Eolian shirts by themselves (with a little explanatory note inside). Later on we’ll ship you the Kingkiller shirt at our own expense.
Also, it took us a while to track down some bigger sized t-shirts. I thought it would be easy, but it wasn’t. That means if you ordered anything bigger than an XXL, your order will take a little longer to fill. We’ve finally gotten them ordered, it will just take a little time.
I’m sorry for the delays. The truth is, we got in a little over our heads with the t-shirts this year and that means some of the packages are going to be getting to you more slowly than I’d like.
It wouldn’t have been so bad if all we were doing this last month was t-shirts. But figuring out all of the mechanics of it in the middle of the fundraiser was hard. Coping with all of the shipping and graphics while launching the store, running the fundraiser and finishing final edits on book two… well… it was just too much for me.
I’m sorry. I expected to sell a couple hundred t-shirts, not more than a thousand. I wasn’t ready for it, and because of that, some of your orders won’t be getting out as quickly as I’d like.
For the next 10 days or so, you shouldn’t expect orders through the store to go out quickly. My lovely assistant Valerie is taking a well-earned vacation, and my equally lovely but somewhat newer assistant will be heading out to spend Christmas with her family soon. (I haven’t asked her yet if it’s okay to put her name in the blog, so for now I think I’ll refer to her as… Pepper Pots. Or maybe Navi.)
Anyway, my point is that Valerie and Pepper are off having lives right now, which has made me realize that I should probably get back to my life, too. I need to spend some time with Sarah and Oot. I’ve been neglecting them in the last month’s rush, and I need to make up for that.
And I *really* need to start my Christmas shopping. You know how many presents I’ve bought so far? One. Just one. I wonder how everyone in my family would feel if they got t-shirts this year? If nothing else, I’ve gotten pretty good at wrapping them…
Wish me luck…
pat

I immediately thought of Navi from Ocarina of Time and could hear your assistant yelling, “Hey! Listen!” It’s been a long time since I’ve played OoT.
Is it just coincidence that OoT works so well with your baby’s “name”? Hopefully Zelda’s still around whenever he starts gaming.
When I read Navi, I immediately thought AVATAR !!! That word is forever associated with that movie in my head…poor me! lol
Me too. Listen! xD
Don’t worry, Pat. I’ve ordered two shirts today, but I almost don’t expect them to be here before February xD Everyone has a life! ;)
And by the way, happy Christmas ^^
I want to get that as the ringtone of my phone now… It has to be available out there somwhere…

Ask and ye shall receive.
Oh, this one’s better, cause it keeps going.
http://audiko.net/ringtone/Navi/Hey+Listen
Wows. My vote for most annoying two words in video game history.
Fun visual, Logan. I too now have the image of an assistant following Pat around, crying “Hey! Listen!” wherever he goes.
I think I speak for the majority of us, Pat, when I say we certainly understand. I have a hard enough time just dealing with the presents for a small family. You are trying to send out gifts to what could be the population of a smallish island country.
I do have a question, though. Am I allowed to smugly wear my Eolian shirt around the house, while my roommate waits for her King killer shirt to arrive?
Hope that you, and yours have a Merry Christmas. Give Oot lots of hugs and kisses.
Later days,
Sokol
Not only should you wear it, you should mention often the perfectness of the fit and how soft the cloth is.
Agreed.
Dear, wonderful, selfless man – please please stop apologizing for being human! You have helped us do an amazing thing, and managed some fairly remarkable feats yourself in the last few weeks… So MOST of your adoring fans and friends are completely happy to wait a little, gleefully rubbing our hands in anticipation and enjoying warm fuzzy feelings. Happy Christmas a bit early – you’ve certainly contributed enough joy to mine!
This is exactly what I wanted to say. So instead I’ll just second this comment :)
Rachael
For me, take as long as you want with the T-shirts, etc. Also, just received the Froud signed Faerie deck from the auction on Friday. We will probably reuse the red bubble wrap and the totally awesome green x-mas themed duct tape. Where the heck did you find that?
Keep up the good work, and happy holidays to you and the family.
Jay (and Wendy)
So it was you I was bidding against. I see. *plotting*
Fantastic work Pat (and assists). Hate that things got so crazy, but love what you do.
/hug
Exactly how many bushels are in a fuckton?
You don’t measure them in bushels, but rather, in shitwads. ^_^
Then how many shitwads make up a fuckton? ;)
200 shitwads= 1 shitload
10 shitloads = 1 fuckton
Um…doesn’t fuckton sound like a town?
“As the ferrry approached Fuckton, he observed that the commerce in the small but lively city seemed much more intense that of the nearby Funkytown”
You need to organize a volunteer brigade next time. Or even now, if you are still in the middle of it.
I imagine there are lots of people who would help you just for the asking. 20 people for 3 hours on a couple of Saturdays and VOILA.
Something to consider.
Agreed! I don’t live too far away (couple hours). I know many people would be more than happy to volunteer several hours of their time for this worthy cause!
Good luck! ;)
Well at least the mail service is zipping along once the packages get out the door. I got my shirt in the mail right after that weekend you announced they were going out. I hope you guys have a supremely awesome holiday, even if you do have to spend some of it at the post office.
Also, never underestimate the number of fans you’ve got Pat.
All I want for Christmas is Wise Man’s Fear.
I met a chap in the book store last week and we were BMW about how loooooong authors take to write their books (no disrespect – we were just teasing) – and I commented the Mr Rothfuss took 7 seven years to write the first which was so amazing I re-read it at least every couple of months – (note to self buy hard cover next time – will last longer) – seg way!! And now Mr Rothfuss has taken 3 years to write the second….of which I am waiting with bated breath – dare I hope he takes 1 year to write the third, 6 months for the fourth???? Just teasing Mr Rothfuss, have a wonderful Christmas, hope Oot likes the wrapping paper.
My daughter is quite concerned when I read your book as I am so focused on the words that I block out all the screams and yells – I find it amazingly refreshing,
All the best……..90 days and counting (hopefully)
PS Don’t have a credit card so can’t order my shirts yet……may have to beg and borrow someones………..
Had a dream last night that I received 2 copies of Wise Man’s Fear for Christmas. Then I woke up…
So, Navi. What exactly is this in reference to? Because all I could think of is the aliens in Avatar. It’s a beautiful fake name though anyway.
Navi is your fairy companion in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time. After Final Fantasy 7 it’s basically the greatest game ever made.
I’ve been wondering why FF VII is so great? I have heard that all over the place, but never why. I recently began playing it on PS 3 (only about 5 hrs), but, while it seems a good game so far, nothing jumps out at me as being worth all the hoopla.
Pat,
Glad to hear that sales are going so strong. I work at a company that ships all day long. You might want to think about using a software called Endicia https://www.endicia.com/. We use them for all of our mail shipping national and international. It makes it so that you do not have to do the postage at the Post Office it is all done, just drop off the packages and walk away.
Good luck on the shipping!
Let us not forget that Pat is a novelist. He is not Macys, nor is he Walmart. And the product that his fans have purchased generates revenue that goes to a good cause. Therefore, try to understand that your purchase is part of an effort to support a good cause–that it is not a transaction that gets you something. When you buy something from Pat’s store (and here I’m only talking to the most myopic of materialistic readers) realize that not only the wearing of that shirt displays that you supported a cause, but also the waiting for that product sans customer grumbling shows your support, too. I can’t help but think of the type of person who sent Pat the email about waiting for his or her shirt. Months? Really?
It reminds me that Pat is a novelist who happens also to be a fundraiser, and if we let some of his fans turn into those customers who take advantage of the unique power struggle between consumers and sales people at department stores, then we are expecting Pat to become something more than an artist: a business manager.
And if we do that, then his art will suffer, and all those people who waited so long for book two will have to wait even longer for book three. Rothfuss is not Macys. If you ordered something, enjoy your wait: it’s part of something more than reading THE NAME OF THE WIND and falling into Pat’s dream.
Realize, if enough readers turn into embittered, emailing, emotionally self-centered consumers, then the dreams will end. And that, for many of his fans, would be a special kind of cannibalism: author creates dream–shares with fans–who turn dream on head–which turns author’s dream into nightmare.
Keep on keepin’ on Pat. Change the world and write your books; just don’t let anyone bog you down in the minutia of it all. I’m willing to bet that you have a hard time doing this, but epiphanize that for every weird email you get, there are probably a hundred people who have a little more perspective and appreciate the work you do.
Happy holidays,
Couldn’t agree more with you, Ent! Anyone churlish enough to even think about complaining after what has been achieved should get a full frontal lobotomy…
In England everything’s going to be late because the roads/rails/airports are snarled up. But you know what’s the most important thing about the holiday? Spending time with family and good friends – the presents come way down the list after laughter, love and friendship, food, alcohol, more food, more alcohol, silly games, great (and not so great) jokes, more alcohol, more food, . Did I mention food and alcohol?
Pat, take the break that’s so well-earned, and don’t even feel you have to justify anything to us. The T-Shirts will be great, the prizes will be great, the auctions are already great, and peoples lives will be changed because of what you’ve done for them. Heck, we just bought something…
Have a stunning christmas with your family. And that goes for everyone!!
My thoughts exactly.
Well, obviously not verbatim. But indeed: printing and shipping t-shirts is not exactly the core competence of a world-class novelist. Nor should it be.
I got my Eolian T-shirt the other day—perfect for me for so many reasons—and spent a full minute wearing a ‘:3’ face.
Thanks for all the work, Pat. :3
I <3 mine too. And two of them are gifts. Good thing I didn't count on just the Kingkiller for gifts! I guess they will transmogrify and become valentine gifts instead. (When our powers combine… we become KINGKILLER-VALENTINE!!!)
Some people are such pricks. Eff them.
Take the entire week Pat, we’ll all be here when you get back.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the t-shirt update!!
I was trying really *really* hard not to care too much about the fact that my shirt wasn’t here yet b/c I knew all the things you said up there–that you had a million orders, and that I didn’t order my shirt right away, and about a zillion other things…but I’m poor, and that was a lot of money! So I was worrying anyway…
Point being, the update made me feel better, and I’m *going* to stop worrying that you did, in fact, send me a shirt and it’s just lost in the mail somewhere. I AM GOING TO STOP WORRYING. DANG IT.
Anyway, enjoy your Christmas, Mr. Rothfuss and assistants (named and not). I’m going to go not worry about my shirt some more. Dang it.
Thanks for putting in so much time and effort for this (and still updating your blog!). I already received my order, well in time for Christmas, though honestly I wasn’t expecting it for at least another month with the fundraiser going on and everything.
You know that you have a legion of readers/fans at your beck and call, right? If you need us to do anything to help out or make life a little easier for you, you really only need to blog about it.
Enjoy your time with your family this Holiday season. :)
It’s cool, Pat. I can wait for my T-Shirt. I mean, I’ve gone shirtless now ever since the voting started because I didn’t want to profane by body with anything less than a godly Name of the Wind shirt (I’m getting a little cold now), but damnit I’ll WAIT!
Now THAT’s dedication.
Thank you so much, Pat. You folks ROCK!
O_o You’re actually folding the shirts? Really?
Um, feel free to just stuff mine in there any-old way, man. Then take the extra 27 seconds that saved you and reflect on what an awe-inspiring agenda you and your team have pulled off.
Aw to Hell with that: I order you to put off mailing my shirt until next month. Go shop, dance in the streets (beware the ice!), or just pass out on the floor. It’s all good.
As if. I have been reading the blog for a few months, bought two shirts and this is the blog that pushed me to write.
You do not need to apologize.
Thanks for the great books, the amazing t-shirts and the more than fantastic job with World Builders.
I got my Eolian shirt last week. I am very pleased.
Congrats on the Worldbuilders. That is great. I am a little biased towards Heifer Project anyway. Not only is it an awesome charity, but its headquarters is about 5 blocks from the school where I work. For a Christmas party last week one parent donated $20 for each student to pick one thing to donate through Heifer.
First non-spoiler review of Wise Man’s Fear is up on Tor.
http://www.tor.com//blogs/2010/12/worth-waiting-for-patrick-rothfusss-the-wise-mans-fear
Thanks for the link! Am re-reading The Name of the Wind for the umpteenth time and will probably dive into it again the last week in February!!
Did anyone else notice the amount of over $285,000 raised? That is A LOT of damn chickens! So proud of all the fans!
You better be cuddling Sarah and Oot at this very moment! Go!
Seriously, as someone else up there already said, we will all still be here after the holidays (waiting patiently or not), and we will still love you and your books and your amazing generosity.
A fuckton sounds like some some sort monster truck. Or perhaps a measurement of nuclear war dead. The two are definitely related I believe.
Any idea when lottery winners will be notified if they win?
I seem to remember the deal last time (and the time before) being no notifications. You know you’ve won when you get a package from Pat in the post. If you don’t get anything, you didn’t win.
If that’s changed, though… then I’m wrong. *g*
While I commend your dedication in folding and shipping 1500 t-shirts (zoiks!), I think you might want to explore using a fulfillment house to take care of this for you in the future. For example, http://www.moultonfulfillment.com/
I’m not at all associated with them and this is not an endorsement. I just thought you should know such places exist and do a pretty good job.
But they cost money, probably. Unless they’re willing to do the work for free as part of the Worldbuilder’s charity then that would be taking pigs and chickens and bee hives out of the mouths of hungry families.
I was very happily surprised yesterday to find a package from Pat waiting for me at home. I absolutely did NOT expect that until way after the holidays, especially considering that:
a) I live in Sweden. Way off from Stevens Point. (No, not Sweden as in some small village named that in Minnesota. Sweden the country).
b) You only began sending out the shirts a little over a week ago.
Now, I haven’t opened it yet. Have wrapped it up as a Christmas gift for myself and will open it smugly on Christmas Eve (yes, we celebrate on Christmas Eve here in Sweden, the proper way to go about it :) ).
Cannot say thank you enough Pat, for all the wonderful stuff you’ve done, with Worldbuilders and the T-shirts and fabulous blog posts and….
Have you perhaps discovered a way to discard sleeping? Can’t imagine you having time to do all these stuff (not to mention some ardous revisions on WMF….) during normal waking hours.
You sir, are truly an inspiration.
Well, my donation to the fundraiser never was properly credited for the team. Guess I’m out for the drawings. Oh well. Someone will still benefit, and that’s what matters. I would have put in some more, but we’re so broke around here that Nerdbaby is going to have to wait until January to get his Christmas gifts. Good thing he’s only one and has no idea what this whole holiday madness is all about. I did get some adorable pictures of him wailing his head off while visiting Santa, though. :)
Also, that’s a lot of damn shirts. Looks like you need some more help shipping them out. And I could use a job. Coincidence? :) I tease, of course.
Awesome, awesome, awesome job with the fundraiser this year. That is going to buy a whole lot of goats. All of you over there at HQ take a moment, take a deep breath, and relax. No sense in going insane just yet. Save that for later, to add to your reputation. :)
Dont sweat the mailing time Pat, I recieved ‘Your College Survival Guide’ in three weeks and I’m in New Zealand. For those of you who dont know where that is, (although if you are a one of Pats fans I expect you to) it is about as far away as is possible.
From a NOTW addict, waiting for his WMF fix
Oli Gray
Pat: I am awesome at folding t-shirts, and I live in Madison which really isn’t that far away. I’m also unemployed, which means lots of free time! Let me know if you need t-shirt packaging and shipping help.
I got my shirt and it was RAD! Completely worth the wait (like Wise Man’s Fear, I’m sure).
“Hey! Listen!” is definitely out there as a ringtone, because I have it. I got it from a Zelda soundboard that’s available free on the Android market, just FYI.
Really, though, what I came here to say was that I think it’s great how forthcoming you are with information about the t-shirt situation. It must be hard when faced with arsey emails to keep a level head and to be able to write a post like this without taking a few names first. Full respect to you for this.
And FWIW I ordered a map print from the store a few weeks back, fully expecting not to get it until next year. It came last week. I’m in the UK. That’s some impressive turnaround right there, so thanks a ton.
-Chris
Now I feel almost spoiled for having my shirts and the posters the boyfriend ordered already.
Also, I have two friends who have “Hey, Listen” that usually go off for their text messages (because it gets WAY annoying when it’s a repeating ringer).
I was kind of surprised at the people who were like “OMG AVATAR REFERENCE!” Partially because I didn’t even think of that, and partly because it’s hard for me to accept that there are people here who AREN’T nerdy.
Anyway, good luck with everything. Enjoy the holiday and love the family intensely for a couple of weeks. I’m sure they miss you.
My first order of Shirts arrived today. As I live in Switzerland, I’d say that was pretty fast.
I hope my second order with the Denner Fishing and Kingkiller Shirts will be delivered as fast as the first when the Shirts are printed.
So, thank you a lot Pat, and happy holidays!
PS: Still grinning like a schoolboy over my early present ;-)
If it was my mail that puzzled you, I apologize.
But I did write ‘month’ and it was not my intention to complain at all.
I’m just afraid that I missed the deliveryman and the shirt is on its way back to the US or something, I’m just a nervous person.
Again, sorry. And a big hug for all your hard work.
You might be the nicest man I know of.
Fredrik.
Sir Rothfuss,
You have more than earned a lengthy vacation. I might be saying in this in part because I have not taken my Eolian shirt off since it arrived (What? That’s not a bad thing! The shower was good for it!), or because after reading that you had sent in the final edits I read and re-read and re-re-read NoTW in preparation for March. Another possible factor could be that you have worked your ass off for the sake of your fans and for the sake of your craft. Your family, no doubt, misses you greatly and wishes you would return from this rather cruel world of unstable fans and relentless editors. Go have yourself an epic Christmas, full of the usual joy, mirth, , , and ! As someone already mentioned, we will still be here when you return…though, now that I think about it, that might not entice you back…erm…please?
Regardless of the chaos,
Another Devoted Fan
“last week I got an e-mail from someone who said their shirt took months to arrive.”
Reminds me of a time when I worked in customer support for eBay. I got an email from a member who explained to me patiently as if I were five that he had been a member of eBay for 30-odd years.
eBay was founded in 1995.
Some people just live in their own reality.
Congratulations to Pat+company, all the donors, and the entire world on the fundraising totals!
I won’t mind a bit if Pat takes a whole decade on Book Three if he manages to keep coordinating this every year in the meantime.
A+!
–P
how do i buy a signed copy of NOMW with personal message( if its not too much to ask) and those shirts? sorry i’m new here…. i’ve been patiently waiting for the new book to arrive( even pre-ordering it just to be sure) but i would like a copy of the first one to add to my collection.. ( i’m a book addict)… i have a copy of NOMW for reading but would like to get one for keeping only and safely locked ( i’m not joking on the locked part…lol). and i do mean to buy the rest of the series when they come.. 2 copies each time.. one for reading the other signed if i can get one too keep and cherish… tnx…
hope you have a lovely holiday….. tnx very much
one more thing to ask? will there be other special books to be auctioned off? and will you be doing overseas trip signing? ( in australia to be exact)
I purchased my signed book from his “The Tinker’s Packs” website linked to in the post (http://thetinkerspacks.bigcartel.com/product/the-name-of-the-wind , note the message in the original post about delays on store orders for the next 10 days).
Given how much other stuff’s been sent/set up, I’m amazed the book got out to me so quickly.
Just got my shirt today, very pleasantly surprised since you’d mentioned delays and I’m in the UK, wasn’t expecting it before Christmas. It’s just a shame the Christmas presents I’ve bought for people (one of which I then need to ship onto America) haven’t taken a leaf out of your awesomeness book. I’m going to wear the f*** outta this baby now! Cheers Pat and a Merry Christmas to you, your family and your vacationing assistants!
Just wanted to say that my t-shirt arrived today. I ordered it pretty quick after they became available and I’m in the UK. Very happy that it arrived in time for Xmas.
Thank you and I hope you have a fabulous Xmas and New Year
While I may not speak for everyone, you definitely deserve some time off, as a matter of fact, if you did nothing but the between now and new years but spend some time with you family, sleep, eat, and possibly post a blog or 2, I would say you had accomplished all that you needed to.
Happy Holidays
I recieved my T-shirt this morning, i think today may be the best christmas eve ever. I wasn’t expecting it till after Christmas seeing as i’m in England and the post delays over here are crazy (i’m still waiting on something posted from within the UK from November!!).
I sincerely thank you and your assistants for giving up so much of your personal time to do this for your fans and also the charity.
It really takes one redneck to see another.
Love the shelfs in the 2nd photo!
Or shelves.
WTB edit …
Merry Christmas to Pat, Sarah and little Oot! I hope your holiday is lovely.
That’s all I wanted to say :o)
Some people will complain regardless of what they’re getting. I just want to say thank you. My first shirt arrived sooner than I expected and the little note about the King Killer shirt was a nice touch and much appreciated. Enjoy your family and have a Merry Christmas.
The last T-shirt I ordered online took [give-or-take a week] a year and 8 months to arrive…no rush on my account!
Hope you, your lady and your Oot, have had/are having an awesome Christmas!
Congratulations – massively – on the final total for this year’s Worldbuilders! I promise to be in on it next year as my new debit card [arrived in the post last night] is Visa, and thus accepted! Hurrah!
Merry Christmas Pat! I hope Buddha brought you that pony and plastic rocket you wanted!
So, it is completely, gauchely off-topic for me to mention that the 417 pages of The Name of the Wind I’ve read since yesterday have been one of the greatest presents ever? It even tops the half of a mountain bike I got the year I wished for new wheels on every falling star I could during a meteor shower… there are both advantages and disadvantages to having a birthday so close to Xmas.
Seriously, as I told my parents in the thank you letter, this is one of those wonderful books I have always wanted to read. I just didn’t know until it was in my hands. After Savien found his Aloine, with her voice like burning silver, I was so overcome, I had to stop and say so.
What instrument do you play? How many musicians are you close to? Otherwise, how can you possibly know how it feels to be consumed by a song, or starve and fiend for even the touch of your music? Lord, I wish I grew up among performers, but you’ve at least made me feel a helluva lot better about growing up in Wisconsin.
Happy Holidays, man. Those new babies are really cool around this time (I remember it well from the five children we had). And if I never get a tee-shirt, I’m happy being part of your great effort to help others. My youngest daughter (now 17) and I eagerly await your new book in March (think we’ll have to buy two copies).
Again, love all your work.
Got my T-Shirts in the mail and can’t describe how joyous I was to get mail from you :) Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
