Signed Copies of The Wise Man’s Fear

[Edit: As of Feb 20th, the Signed Page is no longer taking orders for signed books. If you want to buy a signed copy, contact one of the stores where I’ll be signing books on my tour, or contact some of the bookstores that got pre-signed copies from my publisher.]

The comments on Wednesday’s blog were lovely.  People’s enthusiasm was infectious, and I have to say I’m looking forward to the tour even more than I was before.

Right now I am filled with warm, fuzzy feelings. And spring rolls.

Since I announced the tour dates, folks have been asking some really good questions about the tour. I’m going to look into the answers and put them together into a tour FAQ that I’ll post up Monday-ish.

But for now, here’s the big question people have been asking me for months.

I don’t think so. At least I’m not going to be doing anything like that really soon.

The main reason is time. I’m going to be spending all of March touring. That means I wouldn’t have the time to sign your books until April at the earliest. That means most of you wouldn’t get your books until two months after the release.

And honestly, when I get home from my month of touring, the last thing I’m going to want to do is sign and ship 500 books….

That said, I know a lot of you won’t be able to make it to my signings. Maybe I’m not doing an event close to where you live. Maybe you have to work that day. Maybe you have a pathological fear of bears, and because of this you don’t want to get very close to me in real life…

So here’s what we’ve worked out.

Shawn Speakman runs a Website called The Signed Page where he sells signed books from all sorts of big-name authors.

He’s based in Seattle, so when I go out to do my first signing there at the University Book Store, I’m going to stop by his place too and sign a bunch of books for him. That means he’ll start mailing out his orders on March 1st.

Shawn does international shipping, so you can get hold of my book no matter where you live. He also is very careful about his packaging, so you don’t have to worry about your book getting banged up on its way to you.

Yes, I will still personalize the book to you if you want.

And yes, the books will be first edition copies of The Wise Man’s Fear. If the first book is any indication, these will probably be worth some serious money some day…

Shawn is also selling signed hardcover copies of The Name of the Wind and copies of prints of the original cover art for The Name of the Wind.

Best of all, Shawn has agreed to donate five bucks of every book sold to Worldbuilders. He’s just that sort of guy….

It’s a way better option than ordering from me. You’ll get it cheaper and faster, and some of the money goes to charity.

So feel free to head on over and make your order.

Have a great weekend everybody….

pat

Thanks for the heads up! Just ordered my wife and I signed copies of The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear. We were disappointed that you wouldn’t be anywhere near the Carolinas on your tour but this gives us a way to at least get some signed copies finally. The fact that some of the money goes to Worldbuilders was just icing on the cake. Keep up the awesome!

I betcha you’re going to be in for a big surprise when you hit Shawn’s place in Seattle. I say we start another Charity for Patrick Rothfuss’s oncoming carpal tunnel syndrome surgery.
Another question, is the Library of Congress a done deal? Is it a ticketed event? I’ve got a friend who works there so we’ll prolly try to snag some tickets by hook or by crook. If not, Bailey’s Crossroads is a good venue. Heck, even Brandon Sanderson filled the place.
    See you in March,
    Jay (and Wendy)

The Signed Page is awesome! Ordered from it many times and not a scuff mark on any books mailed all the way to Australia.

Any word, Pat, on the availability of WMF as an e-book, say on Amazon? For those of us some 12,000 miles away from the U.S. who need instant gratification upon the glorious release date!

All the best for 2011, by the by!

Hey Pat! Thank you for all the info about your upcoming tours, signed books, etc. In looking over the Amazon page for said book, did you notice that there’s an ‘Unknown Binding’ format listed for $99.99? Just curious what that’s all about, or if it’s just one of those weird Amazon things.

Thanks again for everything, and safe travels!

This is…an amazing idea! Been waiting to put in my pre-order at amazon (you know for that month when you have more money than you expect to, which never seems to happen)… And been a little sad that Denmark is never on your tourplan – but now, now I get to have a signed copy, and you don’t have to travel all the way here! Fantastic!
And the charity – an extra bonus that’s sure to make every one feel all warm and fuzzy :)

Wooha! Very excited about this since it was going to be 30/70 as to whether or not I could make it to the DC signing. Also, as some other folks here have mentioned, I think you may be in for a surprise. You expected to sell a couple hundred t-shirts but you easily sold over a thousand. However, I still want to try and make a DC signing.

    Umm…Odd concern,
I will be able to make it to the signing in Seattle, but I am worried about whether there will be enough books there for me to be able to buy one that day, or if I should reserve a copy. I’ve never been to a signing before so I don’t know how many people or books will arrive.

I have this exact question (hello, fellow Seattlite!). I’ve also never been to a book signing, and I think it’d be cool to buy the book in-store and bring it straight from the check-out counter to the signing. But so would everybody else, I imagine. I haven’t pre-ordered for this reason. What to doooo?

I’ve been to a few book signings at the University Bookstore and they usually have lots of copies on hand, so you probably don’t need to worry about it. If you’re feeling extra paranoid, you can always call them and reserve a copy. They’re pretty awesome about these kinds of things.

I’m giddy with excitement about this!

Question: as I was looking through the store here, I saw some things (e.g., the map) that I’d also love to get as a wallpaper for my large Apple monitor. Is there somewhere we can find such things (for example, Brandon Sanderson has some nice wallpapers of the cover art for The Way of Kings).

Apologies if this is an inappropriate place to ask the question, but I couldn’t think of anywhere else to ask!

    Cheers from Nova Scotia.

I only fear for your sanity, both because of the intense schedule you have, and my worry that the books will be like the T-shirts. I worry that you’ll get way more orders than you think….

Assuming I don’t get mugged in excess of 4 times from the time I arrive in Boston to the time I find Snell Library, I’ll see you there. P.S. – I was stoked to see that, given the cover, The WMF is also “a novel.” PHEW!

Quick question about the order layout for the Signed Page, if you happen to know.

For the personalized bar, just your name goes there (if you want it there) right?

Or name + personalization? All I really wanted from the personalization was just a random, funny arse comment or haiku from ya.

    • Oatmeal
      Posted January 15, 2011 at 2:11 AM | Permalink

He generally asks that you be very specific about what you want your personalization to say. For example, if you were to say “Say something funny” he would write “something funny” as the personalization. It’s in his FAQ (I think) or on one of the many “how do I get a signed book” blogs.

That being said, where it asks for the personalization, I would put exactly what I wanted it to say. Better to give too much information than not enough…

You are always selling yourself short! I think you can resonalby expect to have more than 500 orders, especially at $35. That is why I am getting in on this early, because I have to wonder how many orders will be taken before someone has to put an end to the madness.

Today, after years of trying, I found out I finally managed to get my best friend addicted to The Name of the Wind. I borrowed her the book a month ago and now she’s currently sleep deprived and refuses to put the book down. When I told her the next book was coming out soon she immediately made me promise to buy her a copy. If I didn’t I would never see my precious book again.

Hi Pat, I’ll cut from the chase. I ordered a couple of WMF and a NotW for some friends, and when I select the option to pay with credit card and select my country (Mexico) the following message appears:

-You can’t sign up for this offer right now because it doesn’t meet the eligibility criteria. However, you can complete this transaction now by selecting a different payment method-

Does it mean that I necessarily have to have a PayPal account in order to complete the transaction?

    Thank You!

Just made my order! Thanks so much for doing this Pat, you really are a king amoung authors. Although I really worry that you are going to be signing at least a thousand books on March 1st! I couldnt resist being able to have a signed first printing of WMF to match my NotW, and since I live in Toronto, there was no way I could make it down to the States to get one signed.

As much as I’d love to order a signed book the shipping is only one dollar less than the book itself to the UK. This is your fault for writing such a hefty tone!

You want my approval for an UNofficial fan forum?

That said, I’ve thought about putting up a forum for some time now. The problem is that forums can very quickly devolve into dens of shitty behavior if they don’t have proper moderation. And I don’t have the time and energy to supervise something like that.

Right now I think the comment threads serve as a sort of forum. People can log on, ask questions, and talk to each other. And since it’s on my blog, I can keep an eye on things to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand….

        Roger.

My thought was that there are some great forums out there (see Dragonmount forums for a shining example) that really promote good discourse and have great moderation.

But if there isn’t much interest, and Pat doesn’t like it, no worries.

Personally, I’ve had bad experiences with forums – even those with halfway decent moderation. As Pat (kinda) said, they always devolve into a heaping pile of filth.

An unofficial forum might be good for some people, but I know I wouldn’t be one to visit. I like it here on the blog. :)

YES! Let me add my thank-you’s to the list. Ordered both. Now I can pass down my unsigned hardcover NOTW to elder daughter who can pass down my original paperback NOTW to younger daughter. We can thus all be reading NOTW at the same time. ONE copy of signed WMF for me will make them insanely jealous. But there’s only so much ‘book money’ in the budget. It’s good to be Mom.

I’m a Nook owner, read pretty much everything on the thing, and so I will not have a hard copy of the book. Would you sign my Nook? It would be the most awesome nook ever if I had a Rothfuss signature on it.

If Nook signing is a no-no, I’ll just buy a hard copy of the thing.

So I don’t mean to derail the flow of this post, but I was reading the Name of the Wind, and in the section where Kvothe is trading his exam date, did you sneak in the use of finger binary? He used his middle finger and thumb to symbolize 5. I hope this isn’t already common knowledge, mentioned by you countless times, or at least that I don’t look like enough of a fool that I need to wear a paper bag on my head to your Seattle book signing.

My Eolian t-shirt arrived yesterday. I love it! Wonderful baby-doll styling and fit!

And I was surprised to see a second package from you in the mailbox: my prize from the Worldbuilder lottery. I was stunned, touched, and very pleased. You really didn’t need to do it – I was happy to donate without getting goodies in return – but it is nevertheless much appreciated.

In case anyone is wondering, I am now the proud owner of a signed copy of “Three Dead Princes”, an anarchist fairy tale. I can hardly wait to read it – after I steal it back from my kids who thought that an anarchist fairy tale was exceptionally cool. It went a long way toward restoring my stature which had slipped pretty seriously when I put on my Eolian t-shirt; you’d think by now they would be used to having a nerd for a mom!

I’m looking forward to seeing you at the book signing in Oakbrook, Il.

Thanks Pat! Placed my order for 2 last night. Now all but my first edition NoTW (Fabio) will be signed. I actually brought it with me when I went to see you (Borders in Virginia Beach) but I had to leave early if you remember. My wife is disabled and I needed to get her back. Instead of just asking if you minded signing mine early, I had one of those moments where I thought it would be cooler to act as if I’ve been around big name authors all my life than to ask for my last un-signed edition to be singed. A moment I regretted 5 seconds after I left Borders. It’s good though as I’m sure I’ll make it another signing at some point.

I’m definitely getting excited about the tour! I’m actually from England, UK, but I am currently out in Canada (London, ON) on a Student Exchange trip, so I am really hoping to manage to get to Chicago for the signing there!
I was just wondering about something, as I have never been to a book signing before, what was the procedure about getting multiple books signed?
It’s my Sister’s birthday in March, so I thought it would be a great present as she absolutely loves you (in fact, she actually suggested your book to me)! But would it be too cheeky to get a book signed for me? As well as a book signed for my sister? (Apologies if what I am suggesting is heresy! But I was just wondering)

Anyway, looking forward to potentially see you!

First – I won something in the raffle!! Yayyyyyyy :) Author I’ve never heard of but I’m still super excited.. Question though (for anyone really) Its a first edition thats signed and numbered… I’ve heard that you’re really not supposed to open them or like… use them? Is it okay to just treat it like a regular book??

Second – I ordered an Eolian Bar shirt and got it today.. Just wanted to say it looks great and you got it to me super fast! Thank you thank you!!

Thats it – I’m super excited about WMF coming out and I’m pretty sure I’m gunna spring for the signed copy :)

    Thanks!
    Carolyn

    Heya Pat,
is there any way of knowing if we won something from the world builders lottery, or if we were even entered? I love the worldbuilders charity, and would happily donate anyway, so it’s not the biggest deal in the world, but just curiosity =)

If you donated on the Worldbuilders team page, you were entered in the lottery….

oh crap. looks like i clicked on the wrong link, and my donation went straight to the core heifer fund instead of through world builders.

Oh well. The donation of a cow is one of the most sacred actions a hindu can do, so i’m happy to do so =)

Is there any word on when the audio version of Wise Man’s Fear will be available? The audio of NOTW was excellent. Don’t get me wrong, I will be buying and reading a hard copy, but when I REALLY like a book I love to listen to it again while delivering my route. I am hoping that the audio version won’t be too far behind the release date of the book.

Pat, just wanted to say, really, really, really looking forward to seeing you in Brooklyn on the tour. I’ll be the one up front who’s manic enthusiasm and worshipful demeanor makes you slightly nervous, I have that effect on my heroes. It’s usually okay, except when I attend live surgery demonstrations.

Not that you haven’t read a billion of these, but here’s my take on The Name of the Wind.

    Hi Pat!

This has totally totally made my day :) I’m in the UK but will happilly fork out the extra to have a signed copy may even get a second one for my brother. His name’s actually Lanre as well so he’s forever quoting lines from NoTW with his name in it!

Thankyou for generally being awesome :D

    P.s. 932 pages?? holy hell…

I live in Ireland so chances of me ever seeing you in person are slim… however I just realised that I only have 6 weeks left to wait before I can sink in to The Wise Man’s Fear. I only discovered your book last year (I read about it on Penny Arcade, as it happens), so I haven’t had too long to wait, but I’m still incredibly excited. Thanks for making it so long – I know we’ll have to wait a fair while for the third book, so it’s great to be getting a good long book to keep us going :)

    Hi Pat,
I just got my T-shirts today. They’re great, thanks for all the work you put into that. I also ordered both signed books from the website. I think you might end up having to sign more than just “a bunch” :)
    Happy touring!

    Hi Pat,
Kind of an off topic question here and apologies if it has been asked before but will The Wise Man’s Fear be available for the Kindle?

    Thanks,
    David

Brandon is shaking in his boots. If he were Buffy, he would be shaking in his “stylish yet affordable boots.”

I love Way of Kings; perhaps since WMF’s ARC is 9% longer perhaps I’ll love it 9% more. We shall see!

Ordered a signed copy of each. Learning about being able to buy signed copies AND getting to see you in Houston has made my day. I wish you a sickness free, awesome-fest book tour.

So when the dust clears, I will have 3 signed hard copies of the book (two as gifts for my buddies who loved the first one) and two kindle versions so me and the wife can both read it without fighting over it. Victory is mine!
