Okay. I’ve got some important news about the upcoming signing tour for The Wise Man’s Fear. (Especially the San Francisco event.)
But first I need to you take a look at this:
That’s a screenshot of the product details on the Amazon page for The Wise Man’s Fear.
It doesn’t look like a lot at first, but there’s a cool piece of info there.
No, I’m not referring to the mammoth listing of 1008 pages. (Which isn’t true, anyway. The book is actually a mere 992 pages.)
Neither am I attempting to draw your attention to the fact that it’s coming out on March 1st. (Which is pretty cool in its own right.)
No. I’m referring to that bit at the bottom. Where it points out that right now, the sales rank of The Wise Man’s Fear is #8.
That means out of all the books on Amazon right now, only seven other books are doing better than mine.
Here’s a picture of Amazon’s top 10 list:
Yeah! Suck it, Rumsfeld! And you up there! Yeah you, arty-looking book with the parasol! I’m coming for you next!
Okay. Enough of that. Now some serious business.
Today I was hoping to post up the FAQ that would answer (most) everyone’s questions about the upcoming tour.
Unfortunately, on Monday I was brought low by a bout of food poisoning. I won’t trouble you with the details. But suffice to say that I was brought very low. Very. VENI VIDI VOMI.
So today, I’m just going to give one urgent update and one strong piece of advice.
The Urgent Update:
If you’re planning on attending my reading in San Francisco on March 3rd, you’ll want to e-mail them right away and reserve your seat.
You need to drop an e-mail to [email protected] telling them you’d like to attend. Give your full name. They’ll bounce you back an e-mail confirming that you’ll be able to get inside, and that e-mail will effectively serve as your ticket to get in the door.
Now if you don’t really care about the reading and all you really want is to get your book signed, you don’t need to drop them an e-mail. In that case, you can just show up the address around 9:00 instead of 7:00. Borderlands bookstore will be there at the theater, selling books, and I’ll be there, signing them. No ticket required.
The Strong Piece of Advice:
A lot of people have e-mailed me, asking if there are any particular rules for attending my signings. They wonder if they need tickets to attend, or if they need to call ahead to the bookstores to make sure there will be X copies available for them when they show up.
Here’s the simple answer. I honestly don’t know. Each bookstore does things a little differently.
I do know three things though.
1. Generally speaking, it’s considered polite to buy a book at the place that’s hosting the event.
2. Generally speaking, bookstores love it when people pre-order books.
3. It’s probably safer to call the store and see what their plans are for the signing, rather than be caught by surprise the day of the event.
So here’s my advice.
If you go over here to the Tour Page, you’ll see I’ve added phone numbers for all the bookstores on the tour.
So, if you’re planning on driving three hours to come to my signing in City X, you might want to give them a ring and make sure you don’t need to reserve a seat first. Even if you know you’ll be able to get a seat, it might not hurt to call and see if they’ll reserve you a book.
That way, not only will you have a better idea what to expect when you show up to the bookstore. But depending on how many call to ask about the event, the bookstore will have a better idea of what to expect in terms of attendance.
You see? Everyone wins.
Just in case you missed it, here’s the link to the tour page with the phone numbers again.
Share and Enjoy,
pat

I don’t suppose you would know if the bookstores are giving a discount on your book? Amazon is giving over 50% off. I’m sorry but I am a grad student so any discount I can get… I mean I would like to buy at the store hosting but not if I can get it substantially cheaper online and get it the day of rather than waiting til the 6th (3hr drive for me too, so I cannot pick it up on the first). I hope the store isn’t insulted!
Just an FYI (since you mentioned the March 6th reading). Murder by Book has their rules posted on their website http://www.murderbooks.com/signings.php
And they require you to purchase a book if you want to get it signed.
See you on the 6th!
I called Murder by the Book, and they did confirm that you must purchase a book there to get it signed (your reserved book is your ticket to get in the signing line). However, if you bring something else for him to sign (Kindle, world-map, etc), that is totally fine. No reservations needed for the reading itself, but to get anything signed you must buy at the store or pre-order. He said they would be open at 9am on March 1st to take orders over the phone, and he urged me to do that since they’ll probably be gone by the date of the reading! Just FYI!
You *do* know that Steig cant really watch his back, on account of him being quite dead, right :P?
Shit. I didn’t know. I’ll change that.
From all I’ve read, Steig wouldn’t mind the comment at all. And he’d love how you’re kicking Rummy.
No worries, its not like he can really mind can he ;)? And as the previous poster wrote, he probably would only have laughed at it anyways!
I cant wait to read Wise Man’s Fear btw, im running all over trying to find a shop that can get it in my hands (in Sweden) on release day!
Oh god. So pumped. I really hope I get to the one in Houston.
Thank you for the reminder to make preparations. I would hate to get thrown out of Powell’s for using violence to procure the last copy of TWMF.
“Pssst” made me read the blog as a Pat Whisper. It was nice.
LOVE THIS. And yes, I’ll be calling Powell’s tomorrow.
This is all very cool and everything, but somehow, it doesn’t seem right to me that the Kindle edition of The Wise Man’s Fear costs more than the hardcover…
Really? I’m looking at pricing today and the Kindle version is showing as $14.99 and the hardcover as $15.76. Do you see something different?
Yes. I’m in Europe and here the hardcover costs $15.76, just like over there, but the Kindle Edition is priced at $18.47.
I was trying to get my father interested in the books. Told him to read The Name Of The Wind and then purchase and read The Wise Man’s Fear. My father wisely responded with, “Any man knows The Name of My Wind and all Wise Men Fear It.”
He’s my hero. It’d be cool to see you in Hawaii. I’ve gotten six total people on my ship to read your book through me being an insistent bastard. Since this is Hawaii, though, I think we may be the only six. Good luck with the tour.
Pat, I understand that “San Francisco” can be sometimes tricky to spell. We’re pretty nice around here, but we do ask is that you a) spell it right and b) don’t call it “Cisco.” Or “San Fran.”
That being said, I am beyond excited for you to be coming out this direction :DDD
That’s irritating. My spellchecker doesn’t recognize it as a mistake….
Its too bad you’re not stopping by Boston a few days earlier pat. I’m sure the PAX east crowd would make for a massive turnout at any bookstore. Plus you could take a few hours and enjoy the con yourself, though even that might be hard with such a tight schedule. Anyway good luck, I cant wait for the book.
Heh, poke a geek deeply enough and you’ll find a competitive streak a mile wide and two deep ! So stoked for you Pat, kicking Rummy’s arse is just icing on the cake as you march inexorably to the top spot.
Also, now cannot get this image out of my mind – Pat, replete with hooded cloak, standing outside a book store and hawking slightly grubby copies of WMF from the capacious and dingy interior of said cloak ! Hissing at passers by ” Psst, hey you, wanna see something cool…..? “
Pat,
Going to the Brooklyn signing, but I honestly can’t wait that long to start Wise Man’s Fear. Will the bookstore browbeat me if I show up with the book. And if so, and I buy a second copy, will you sign both…and hug me twice?
You don’t necessarily have to buy WMF at the signing. Just buy *a* book! (Or multiple books, because who has the discipline to buy only one book at a time?) Support the store with your shiny greenbacks, and let them know you’re there because Pat’s siren beardsong called you.
This is exactly my plan for the Madison signing. I’ll bring my copy with me, having already bought it the very second it was available, and I’ll buy a copy for my dad at the signing.
Congratulations! It’s got to be good when the book is that well ranked and it hasn’t even been released yet! Hope you feel better real soon :-)
P.S. Number 2 on Borders Australia Bestseller list http://www.borders.com.au/bestsellers
Pat, Is there a release date for the digital copy for Nook? I will be getting a hard copy from the local signing but would love to carry my nook around with it as well.
http://dft.ba/-wmf-nook
I’m thinking it will automatically download to your Nook on March 1st.
Not surprised you were unwell. Too much Little Debbie. (I say, if you’re going with nonfood, you can’t go wrong with Combos and Pringles.)
Sorry you were feeling crummy, though. And now that I think of it, the last “Veni Vidi Vomi” (hee!) episode I had was courtesy of some beet-based veggie burgers, straight out of the green Mark Bittman book. So I guess sometimes it just happens.
I LOVE that you can be a top 10 bestseller before the book even comes OUT. Goes to show the power of the preorder. Twelve days! Twelve days left! Yay!
See? All that anxiety for nothing, Pat! Not even officially released and you’re already a best seller! You’re such a Rock Star :)
I was so damn happy I was receiving your book in my door. Now I just feel sad because I really want to attend to one of the signings. I really, really hope your break after this tour is not too long, so I could be in one on the six months I will spend in the states… (*sigh*) ok, enough of my whining… Looks like you are having so much fun :) Enjoy it then.
By the way – as of this morning? #7. You have officially thrown the parasol under the bus.
well spotted! (sorry to double-post your find)
That’s awfully polite old bean.
Hey Pat,
You’re at #7 now. The parasol is stomped.
Love, Orvis
First of all, hope you’re feeling better.
Secondly, you have no idea how excited I’m getting about actually buying this book! It’s almost like catching the White Stag. I was going to pre-order it, but in order to get it on the day it comes out, it would cost nearly as much to just go out and buy it. Which I decided I’m going to do, anyway; there’s a bit more fun in it that way, too.
As of 7:28 this morning, (EST) you are now #7.
Chalk this up to yet another one of Kvothe’s successes – maybe you can add it to his monologue: “My name is Kvothe. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. I’m ranked #7 on the Amazon bestseller books list. You may have heard of me… “
I’m far too pumped. I pre-ordered 3 copies from a local bookstore (one for my boyfriend’s family and one for each of us since) just yesterday, and I was almost sad to find that they’ll be signed when I get them, because you’re going to stop by and sign all their copies.
So I might make you sign it twice. For me, it’s not that it IS signed, it’s the experience of GETTING it signed.
Mostly. Having signed books is also badass.
Thanks for the helpful hints about attending book signing! I’ve never gone to one before and I wasn’t sure about protocol. I’ll make my call today and pre-order and all that.
Hope you’re feeling better!
Sigh – that should be “attending A book signing”. I shouldn’t be allowed to type before I finish my coffee.
Yep, so #8 before the book even drops. Pat, you must be very excited indeed. I’m sure you are more thrilled about the fact that your story will be heard (or more appropriately, read) by the masses, but wouldn’t it be great to snag a certain top spot that I won’t directly refer to? I don’t want to jinx it.
Thanks for getting the book finished despite all the life changes. I’m glad you recognize your writing style and understand that to compromise the way you work would reduce the quality of your work, which is what truly distinguishes you from your fellow writers.
I wish you a Happy March 1st!
Ben
Purchased.
Glad you’re getting to live the dream. Better than some suckwad getting it.
Looking forward to see how your writing has improved for book 2 (because we all improve at things we do and care about a lot).
Loved book 1, but thought the ending was a scosh rushed. Once Kvothe left town, I was like, Whoa, is Rothfuss gonna leave behind all the magic of the U?
But a couple years later and I still have the image of a young man riding a roof to the ground seared into my mind’s eye.
Ent_hused, I have to say I agree about the end. The boss fight felt tacked on, and I felt the final climax should have occurred at the university. Though it’s fine, it doesn’t live up to the awesomeness of the rest of the book (the bit of prose when Kvothe leaves the Ruh is the saddest, loveliest thing I’ve read since the leave taking scene in Lothlorien.) I hope we don’t incur His wrath over this.
Wrathfuss ?
Oh my GOODNESS, brilliant, we need to have Wrathfuss as a blog category, I think, whenever there’s a rant. Or actually Wrothfuss works really well, wroth being the adjective rather than the noun, yeah? Must’ve been done already, somewhere.
Shhhh. I don’t want the Wrathfuss on my ass. The very second I pressed the Post button I was filled with deep regret. What was I thinking?
Well, capitalizing a pronoun was a bit much.
Don’t worry about it. Authors, especially ones like Pat who’ve enjoyed a large first success, need to know that their stories aren’t perfect, and that we still love to read them anyway. Otherwise, hubris inhibits growth.
I can tell you the best authors are also far more critical of their own work than their fans. Especially ones who deify them.
And Pat is a great writer. I’m just hoping he keeps pushing himself to bring it. It’s what fantasy needs right now–a shot of literary merit in an overly tatooed and muscled arm. Content over pacing.
Carry on Rothfast!
“Suck it, Rumsfeld!” has become my catch phrase of the day.
By the looks of it we Swedes have the upper hand here, I heard from my local book shop (the fabulous http://www.sfbok.se) that they actually shipped books this Monday, which makes me getting the book in the mail today. Olé to them! Well, and to Patrick also, of course.
You’re #2 on Amazon’s pre-order list too!
Dear Pat,
I know California is all cool and everything but Arizona is nice and warm. :) it’d be awesome if you could come next year or even three years from now. I’m willing to wait.
Love,
a fan that is really understanding the ‘so close and yet so far’ saying.
Also, I preordered your book the day it came out and The Adventures of… yesterday. Super excited for both!
I really want to buy this book local in Seattle, even called and made sure they had plenty of copies. But with Barnes and Noble a mere 2 miles away having the book at the same price as Amazon I am torn. I really need to save money right now, but I really want to get the book signed. So Pat do you get a bigger commission if we pay more for the book? I would do my best to find a way to pay more, if I knew it was going to the author.
Thanks Pat.
I bet you can send him a check directly. And/or donate to Worldbuilders.
On a side note Pat did you notice that your book is the only one in the top 10 that is a pre-release? The others have been out for some time. That is just pure fan anticipation that has you rocking to the top of the list.
On Amazon.co.jp (Japan) Wise Man’s Fear is listed #110,711 overall, #11,054 out of all fiction, and #1,236 in Fantasy. I’m going to order mine now and see if it bumps it up any.
Lol.. we all have to do our part.
I just checked Amazon.com and you’re up to 7 now!
Just to let you know:
In the German Amazon (which has a seperate ranking) your
are #1 English Books > Science-Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy
#2 English Books > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction
and #6 in English Books.
Hell, for a book that’s not even out there yet and is on top
of that only available in a foreign language, that’s pretty
neat, I’d say.
Cannot wait, it’s coming so soon!
Oh, and I’ll be that one person who defends the Amazon page count. Amazon doesn’t just count the numbered pages, it also counts the dedication, title page, copyright page, etc.
So, technically, your book IS over 1000 pages!
Oh. That makes way better sense. Thanks for the heads-up.
Pat *hugs* congratulations!! You ARE composed of awesome and win!!
For the San Diego attendees, Mysterious Galaxy is counting this as a ticketed event. Based on their description, it sounds like you need to buy the book Mar 1 in order to get a ticket.
http://www.mystgalaxy.com/event/patrick-rothfuss-signs
I’ll call them later today to see if preorders are possible, or if you have to be physically instore to buy the book that day.
Quick question and forgive me if this has been asked before but is the Audible.com version going to be out the same day? I always assume so and sometimes I’m an ass.
I’m driving 20 hours shortly after release with a wife and two cats. I’m gonna need something to keep my mind off the drugs I’m not taking.
With regards to the page number thing I’m going to guess that your 992 number is pages that actually contain the story. Their number of 1008 will include stuff like the title page, copyright page, etc.
That said, I’m completely guessing. Either way I’m looking forwards to my copy being posted by amazon.co.uk
The parasol book has been taken. You are now #7! It must be very exciting. Since the San Fran place is asking for reservations, I’m guessing you aren’t really worried about no one showing up to your signings anymore. See you in Beaverton.
Holy cow, congratulations. That must be pretty awesome to have your book in the number eight spot when it isn’t even out yet.
You rock, thanks for taking such good care of us. I won’t be helping your Amazon count, since I’ll be buying the book at a signing location, but I am sure you’ll get onto the even more coveted NYT list, and you deserve #1.
My birthday is the 27th of February; I told my husband I want my birthday present two days late.
Congratulations on the #8 spot for you book! I bet the day it comes out it jumps to #1!
I’ve never been to a book signing before. Is it considered acceptable if I bring my own (3/15 in NYC is too long of a wait for me to read it) and then buy one on location (maybe for a gift?) and get them both signed?
I had a question regarding getting actual books signed. I have two friends that can’t make it to any of the signings (due to living in Canadaland/Minnesota) so they are shipping their books to me. Did you have a limit on to how many books you’ll sign for one person, since it’s looking like I’ll have 6 books with me that day. (This is for the Seattle Event.)
I’ll be stopping by at the Library of Congress signing. If you hear anything specific about tickets or emailing them, would you please let us know. I’m so excited. I already have the day off from work and I’ll probably have read it 2-3 times before you sign the book.
I was looking forward to seeing you in Chicago, and I know that you were scheduled to have a number of tour stops at Borders, do you have any change of venues planned due to their announcement of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy today?
Thanks for the head’s up on the SF reading. I shot them an email!
Will you sign more than one thing???
Hi Pat, was wondering if you (or anyone) knew anything about your book sale through amazon.ca. You see, I want to pre-order the book as I live in kind of the outskirts of an Ottawa suburb and don’t have time to go to a local chapters or wherever for anything, but for the last couple of months, amazon.ca has not had your book up for pre-order, even though it says the release date is March 1st (and you can be notified via email once it’s available..but it doesn’t look like it ever will be). They have the audio cd, and the paperback that will come out in August, but no hardcover.
Amazon.com does not deliver to canadian addresses, so I don’t know where to order the book from!
I believe you can pre-order from Chapters/Indigo:
http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/
I just happened to think of it because I have a friend who works at one in Toronto :) Hope that helps!
Thanks!
Bookdepository.co.uk normally has free shipping worldwide. I picked mine up there cheaper then I could get it in Australia. Also The Wise Man’s Fear is only at 44 in its bestsellers list.
You’re not checking enough… Welcome to #7 in Books!
Just in case you’re worried about WMF not being listed on the digital bestseller list: ebooks on Amazon aren’t listed until after the release regardless of how many pre-orders there are.
And for those of you anticipating the digital release: if you pre-order the book via Amazon, it will automatically be delivered to your Kindle (if you have wireless on) at midnight PST. I don’t own a Nook, but from what I’ve read after past releases, digital copies from B&N will be delivered at midnight EST.
That is the COOLEST thing I have heard all frigging day !!!
Pat, I live in the Nashville, Tennessee area. I’ve been looking around for a place to pre-order your hardcover version, but everyone seems to only have the paperback available. Is the hardcover only being sold on Amazon and at signings? I don’t mind buying from Amazon, I just prefer supporting my local bookstores.
Wow. Not even released and already in the top 10!
Just wanted to say that I was hoping the urgent message part would be something about food poisoning. Looked like it would have been a good opportunity to educate all your readers about the dangers of . . . . use your imagination . .
You’re now up to #6!
I hope you hit #1! You deserve it. I preordered mine weeks ago from Amazon. I think preorders are counted in the first week’s sales, right? I’ll be looking for you on the NYT bestseller’s list.
I hope that by mid August the NYT bestseller’s list has to redefine which books qualify, just to get WMF out of the number one spot. =)
Hoi, I’m in the process of learning Latin, so I was wondering wouldn’t “Veni vidi vomui” be more correct? ^_^
Good look with the launching, I’ll try to come to a signing when the third book comes out sometime. For now its too expensive to travel the Atlantic.
Btw, remember long long ago you wrote a blog saying that if one wanted to send a book to have it autographed, one could just send you a gift and it’d be cool. If I sent you a traditional Norwegian “lusekofte” would you sign my books and send them my way again? xD
-Brian
Books & Co. (Beavercreek/Dayton, OH) is telling people that YOU, Pat, have said that in order to get a book signed, you have to buy WMF from them. That doesn’t sound like you, and you certainly haven’t mentioned it. I always buy a book from the store when I go to signings, but I already pre-ordered my copy, and while I adore you, I don’t need two copies of your book-especially on my poor grad student/part-time job income.
I posted a question about this on the Facebook event for this particular signing. I’m coming from Columbus, OH and pre-ordered the book here, and I also don’t think I can wait until March 10th to start reading the book… I really hope they don’t make you buy a copy there.
Yeah, I plan to start reading it before the signing. My friend called the store to ask again, and was told “well that’s usually how things work” (I’ve been to plenty of signings and that’s totally not true) but also to call back in a week or two while they get things figured out. It sounds to me like they’ve underestimate the extent of Pat’s AWESOME.
I’m also coming from Columbus! :)
I thin Pat said something like its polite to get in instore, in the article just up there. Also to play it safe. But Im sure he could get you a King’s Pardon
It’s polite to buy in store, yes. I always support bookstores when I attend a signing. But requiring to buy a $30 hardcover? One I already pre-ordered? That’s just ridiculous.
I just checked the English Amazon, in ‘Hot Future Releases’ you are at No.4!!!
Bitter sweet though as at No.1 is ‘Annabel Karmel’s New Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner’.
As I said, bitter sweet. :) But congrats Pat! Hey it rhymes.
Sample chapter just got posted on Tor.

Thanks for the tip! (Tried to be virtuous and wait to read it all in context, but couldn’t. Oh well, it was delicious.)

Wonderful sample. I just preordered. I threw in a leather bound copy of douglas adams Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy to get free shipping. :p
Sometimes, I really hate the Canadian Amazon online store. They don’t have nearly the amount of cool stuff the American store gets, nor does it get as good of deals. Hell, they don’t even have The Wise Man’s Fear release date on there for the Hardcover. You know what’s even worse? When I check the bestseller portion of the Hardcover book (as of February 17, 2011), you are #2,092,572 in Books. The paperback is listed for August 1, 2011, why they have the release date for the paperback and not the hardcover is bewildering, but it’s at #11,377 in Books.
Oh god! Horror! Its March the 1st for the US, but I think that means mid-March for NZ. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Thats doubled my waiting time! You guys go ahead, I’ll wallow over here. I need the UK cover too. Geh.
Sorry, my fault ! I organized a ritual that condemned all Kiwis to a year of shitty things happening to them because of the great form the All Blacks are in… the Boks are going to need all the help they can get. I didn’t think it would affect the book though, sorry bru, my bad !
Hey! im trying to get a hold of the university book store in Seattle, but the number you posted doesn’t work!
So I emailed to RSVP for the SF event the morning after the announcement on this blog, and assumed I got in. Only today did I get the email telling me my sister and I didn’t make the cut. At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, I’ve been close to tears all day. My sister bought a flight to come into town for this signing. I’ve been trying to advertise on any forum I can think of that we will barter just about anything to get in. Money, delicious baked goods, and rock climbing lessons are some of the many options that are yours if you give up your seat! Please contact me at [email protected] Thank you, thank you!
Confirmed. The March 3rd SF event is all booked up now: “Alas, unfortunately we no longer have seating available for the March 3, 2011 reading & Q&A event.”
We’re invited to show up at 9pm, though. [PS Good luck to sprout47.]
You might be #8-9 on amazon, but you’re #1 on swedish book site Bokus. Well, at least in the setion english fiction.
I just checked Amazon, since I only just read the article, and you’re up to #6 on the bestseller list! This is spectacular!!
Looks like you have jumped up to #3 on Amazon.
The only things ahead of you are (1) a boy who has been to heaven and back, and (2) survivors of torture during WWII.
Don’t you think that Amazon should tell us exactly how many more copies we need to buy in order to get you to #1? This would be a good incentive for all of us readers/customers…
See you for your Chicago tour stop!

I am too late again ;-). Just wanted to add that bit it too…
What i really hate in my life: Wise Man’s Fear comes out on March 1st and the next day i have to hold my most important customer presentation in a decade. Putting the book aside the evening before (in order to get some sleep) will be an epic battle between my will and my curiosity allied with anticipation.
CU, Martin
It #5 now, when was this? Yesterday?
Patrick,
Congratulations on making it to #4 on Amazon. See you at Powell’s Books in Portland this coming Wednesday!
Gary
Hey.
I got the new book today.
So, thanks for that.
Congrats on being a
#1 in Hardcover Fiction
#2 in Combined Print and E-Book Fiction
Way to go!! Loved Wise Man’s Fear, even though it was really really sad, in my opinion. I’m a huge fan and can’t wait for the next one!
K, I totally messed up the html code there… Woops.
