A few upcoming signings…

So I’ve got a couple signings coming up. They’re falling about one a week in April, which is quite relaxing compaired to the one every day that I was doing in March.

I set this one up just today, and it’s not even a week away. So if you know of anyone here in central wisconsin who might be interested, I’d appreciate it if you spread the news to them.

STEVENS POINT, WI
April 2 at Noon
Signing at Bookfinders
1001 Brilowski Rd
Stevens Point, WI 54482
Phone: 715-341-8300
Facebook Event

I’ll be hanging out at the local bookstore here in Stevens Point for a couple hours this upcoming Saturday, signing books and chatting with anyone who cares to stop by. Bookfinders will have copies of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle as well as hardcover versions of The Name of the Wind.

Also, because this is close to my house, Oot might be making a guest appearance.

LOS ANGELES, CA
April 8 at 7:30 PM
Skylight Books
1818 N. Vermont Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Phone: (323) 660-1175
Facebook Event

This one is going to be fun, as I’m doing a talk and signing with the fabulous Amber Benson.

Amber has graciously forgiven me for making an ass of myself a couple years back. So we’ll be talking about epic vs. urban fantasy, answering questions, and just generally being cool. Or at least Amber will be being cool, and I’ll be faking it to the best of my ability.

AUSTIN, TX
April 15 at 7 PM
Barnes & Noble
10000 Research Blvd #158
Austin, TX 78759
Phone: 512-418-8985

Facebook Event.

When I did my signing at Murder by the Book in Houston, 50 people must have said that they drove down from Austin to attend. So, since I’m going to be in town for a convention, I figured I’d do a signing for folks that couldn’t make the trip.

Earlier this week, I did a call-in show on WPR. If you’re interested, you can listen to the recording of the broadcast here.

If we could avoid the endless screeling noise in the comments along the lines of, “Why don’t you ever come to XXX?” I’d appreciate it.

Cool news on Friday. Stay tuned.

Thanks,

pat

I think my favorite “first!” comment deterrent is the one for fark.com… it changes all instances of “first!” to “boobies!” and moves the post to a random spot in the comments. This turns into somewhat hilarious results when the “first!” in the comment was actually for a legitimate reason, and not in fact the first post at all to begin with.

On the subject… I have never, in all my years on the Internet, understood this “first!” inanity. All it tells anyone is that you have nothing of value to say and/or you sit there refreshing a page hoping to get to comment first, which is sad and kind of creepy XD

And on the subject of this actual blog post — have fun in Austin! I lived there for one all too brief, wonderful summer and IMHO it’s the most awesome place ever. Check out some of the night life if you have time (I’m talking Geek night life like live Monty Python showings and such), and if nothing else be sure to have a drink at the Spider House. I donno about their alcohol, but their coffee is divine!

As far as I know. It’s quite rare to come across one as most people know about it now – I can’t remember the last time I saw it, in fact. But from the FAQ:

            “First Post” time warp

For whatever reason message boards on sites like Fark are forever plagued with morons posting “First Post” anytime a link is posted. Fark automatically turns the words “first post” into the word “boobies” and resets the timestamp on the message to some time in the future so that it isn’t the first post anymore. Attempts to evade that sometimes result in it becoming “weeners” instead of “boobies”.

Pedantery ahoy: That would be EcksEcksEcksEcks or Fourecks (previously known as XXXX or Terror Incognita). Still, the thought of a flustered Rothfuss despairing at a pageful of screeling fans demanding that he visit a fictional continent made me smile all over my face.

You deserve some fun signings at a leisurely pace. Enjoy!

(And ignore all those “please come to ___” requests. I think people assume it’s flattering that they want you to come to their town without realizing that they’re just making you feel bad. And hey, you people who say that, you just stfu!)

Dude I love your books but I keep wishing you were a bit more thickskinned about the ways people express their fanatical love to you, even if it’s in ways that are not 100% pleasing to you. I get what you’re saying but making it sound like people are saying this thing because they are mean bastards/out there to annoy you just makes you sound like a dick. And when you’re not a dick, you are usually charming and funny. Case in point: You’re funny throughout that talk with B. Sanderson, and he kind of isn’t. Chill! Everybody loves you!

    • Joshua_Guess
      Posted March 30, 2011 at 4:47 AM | Permalink

I don’t think it’s an issue about being thinskinned about this. After following this blog for years, and hearing many things that Mr. Rothfuss has said about his day-to-day work, I think it’s pretty understandable that he is getting tired of hearing people ask him when he is going to be close to where they live. As a part time writer myself, I know that coming home from work and cracking open my laptop to work on my stories is hard. Very hard. Think for a minute about what he’s done over the last few years.

      Become a father.
Worked 14 hour days on Wise Man’s Fear, which ended up being one of the best pieces of writing I’ve ever read.
Managed a huge charity drive for Heifer.
Coordinated thousands of prizes for said charity drive.
STILL managed to go on a grueling book tour for the second book.

All though that, he’s kept up with the blog and kept us, the fans, informed. He even wrote his “children’s” book, which is fantastic.

I think, having had the good luck to see him in person and converse with him, that the reason Mr. Rothfuss is asking people not to ask him when he will be coming to their town is very simple: it makes him feel bad. Just like he felt bad at the Lexington book signing, telling us that he wished he could hang out and talk to us, like he did on his previous tour. He seems to feel bad that his increased popularity has made it impossible for him to connect to fans in the same ways he once did.

I feel for him. To me, it’s like s friend or loved one laying a guilt trip on you. Only, that’s just from one person. Imagine what he’s going through, getting tens or hundreds of those guilt trips a week. Must be frustrating…

      @Feathers McGraw
People who have fans are allowed to make requests regarding the “fanatical love” if it is stressing them out. They are not required to just be okay with everything because people are expresssing their fandom.

Typically if fans pester someone too much, that person becomes unavailable and I really don’t want that to happen.

Furthermore I fail to see how Pat’s request that people please stop asking when he’s coming to town when he just finished a month-long book tour qualifies as “being a dick”. Writing that is just rude.

I am quite amazed by the fact that you still HAVE faith in humanity. Guess Worldbuilders helps reinforce it. One of these days I’ll actually have money to donate. Yay for being a student!

Also, think of it this way:
All these people asking you to go visit are really trying to say, “PAT!! We love you and wish to see you so we can tell you this face to face!” or, conversely, “We need an awesome excuse to get our friends to buy your book so they don’t destroy our copy fighting over it!”

They probably just tl;dr all the comments about how depressing it is that you can’t go visit them. More’s the pity, really, but still…

Hope the vacation is going well!

Not sure if you have been to Austin but it is a great town.

Hopefully you’re staying downtown and have a little time to check out:

The Congress Ave bridge bats (big fruit bat colony)
Get some good Tex-Mex (try Guero’s or Chuy’s)
If you are bringing Oot, I’d recommend taking him to Zilker Park (big playground, train you can ride throughout park, great for kids)
Have a great trip to central Texas. You picked a great time of year as in the summer, it gets super hot.

Aaw man… you just reminded me of even more I miss about Austin!

I actually was fine with the heat – didn’t really understand ‘dry’ heat til I was there. The best thing was going on loooong bike rides and just tossing the bike aside and jumping in a random spring when the heat became too much (no worries – was with a local who knew which were fine to swim in).

I also vaguely remember a place that had the *best* Philly Cheese Steaks ever, and I’ve had them in Philly and found these to be better by a long shot…

Dang, I need to go back there again some day XD

Never lose faith, your a father now some people were let down by, or simply chose not to listen to theirs. Crosby, Stills and Nash said it better than I could (always seems like someone has)

“You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
      And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye

      Teach your children well,
Their father’s hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you’ll know by.”

I assure you that I will one of these days. Its a huge dream of mine to meet you and I will drive, fly, walk, or whatever other means of travel that I can find (camel) if necessary to be at one of your book signings. Personally, I don’t care one way or the other where he can go or can’t. I am thankful Pat writes the books he does. They are presently my most favorite books and far surpass how I feel about other books I have read. So long as he continues writing I couldn’t be happier. My sentiment; be thankful for what you get, feel blessed if he does show up and you can go meet him. If you don’t get that opportunity, then chillout lay back and read his books. Fact is, you’ll never be closer to his heart save through the words he shares with us. May he always have a story to tell us. Enjoy!

Hey, just wanted to thank you for everything you do for us! I don’t care if you never tour again, if what you do makes you happy.

I seriously think you should institute a “no asking when I’m coming anywhere” policy on the blog in much the same way as you have your “no FIRST comments” policy. I’m not even you and those comments irritate me. I can’t imagine if they were all directed at me.

Until then, copies of the book are coming to hometowns all over the country, and that’s what’s really important. I’d like to meet you too man, but I don’t think I’m going to be successful trying to get you to come to me. If I really want to meet you that badly, I’ll go to one of the conventions or signings that you do advertise. Period.

Oh, and since I haven´t done so until now, I´d like to say that I really loved book 2. It gave me a lot of much needed energy during my final biology exams. One might think it would keep me from learning properly, but I actually needed something so potent and enthralling that it would be able to get my mind off of my fears and worries. And your book did just that. I was trying to put my reasons for loving your books into words, but I´m no good at that, so you´ll have to just take my word for it. ;)

Unfortunately their is no indication of and email address, Note system or otherwise.

The thing is that when I read a particularly good book or listen to some astonishing music I feel the irrational need to express my gratitude, And I have some experience with leather and have been creating a piece inspired by the NOTW universe, and before mailing it in a “real world letter” wanted to ask for an opinion on the designs.

Good God did you people not read the post? Here’s an idea, if you want to bask in the glory that is Patrick Rothfuss drive/fly/sail to some place he is doing a signing or form a coalition of businesses, colleges, friends, random farm animals to fund his trip.

I don’t think the vast majority of people understand that Pat has been paying his own way on all but the last tour for these signings. So not only does it cost him hard currency, it costs him time away from his lovely wife and child, time away from working, etc. He has been extraordinarily generous with his fans in my opinion, far more than many other authors. I took a day off work, drove 3.5 hours each direction and road the subway 45 minutes to be able to attend his signing at Library of Congress. He was gracious, funny and welcoming despite the fact that he looked very, very tired. He was kind enough to stay until every single person that wanted a signature got one and then he reset and did the same thing 3 hours later.

Please try and exhibit the same level of graciousness Pat does and if he asks you to refrain from a certain behavior – do so.

In my current frame of mind, I would quite possibly staple myself to you until you relented and handed over the most up-to-date draft of the finale. God damn, you know how to build anticipation.

Out of curiosity… When Kvothe is trying to come up with a name for his project (the one that became the Bloodless), he told Kilvan he was having problems coming up with a proper name, calling it an Arrowcatch, because otherwise he’d have to call it a “Clank”… that’s not by chance a nod to Girl Genius is it?
Also… any plans to one day write a Kingkiller book called “16 days to Severan” or somesuch, that tells the story of Kvothe’s journey to Severan (pirates, robbings, etc…)? Just something I’d like to look forward to after day three…. Speaking of which, take you’re time with the next one too! WMF is amazing, and it’s great to have a book of that quality to look forward to! As for the whiners out there… be thankful you didn’t have to wait six years between books like the Dark Tower junkies had to!

The Tower waits are the waits all others are measured against. And they were so, so worth it. Love me some Dark Tower.

If you didn’t already know, King’s book for 2012 is another Dark Tower novel, basically book 4.5, with the Ka-tet having adventures after book 4 but before book 5. according to King’s website, it will be call The Wind through the Keyhole.

Time to get excited! More Roland!

Seriously?!? I LOVE that series, but it was truly the wait against which all others are measured. At some point during the middle of that wait I vowed to never again read an uncompleted series. Thank heavens I didn’t stick with that vow. :) What exciting news…off to check out King’s website.

Ya know, as I was reading, I thought much the same thing. What an awesome later project that might be. ^_^

Nice title, that. “16 Days to Severan” has a nice ring to it.

    HeyZues!

Don’t even think of going Salinger on us just because here be douches. Really, they exist everywhere. Even in the guise of people who want to help.

Funny thing is, douches read, too, thus propelling Kvothe up the top fo’de. The internet just skullfracks the frontal lobes out of those who overstimulate themselves. And is it any wonder… when your bog is likely squeezed between sassy, streaming coeds?

We’re not working in the most hallowed of places here.

    Pat,

I just wanted to say that I’ve followed you here on this blog for a few years now and I’ve always enjoyed reading what you post. I’ve been waiting eagerly for book two, but I have to confess something…

After years of waiting, and countless re-reads of the first book, I’m afraid to buy book two. I’m seriously terrified.

I’ve read some reviews that were wonderful, and others that where “meh,” this happens to every book, I know. But, in my anticipation I’ve built up great hopes for book two and I’m afraid of “What if it’s disappointing?” or “Will I still adore Pat’s writing the way I do now?” and so on…

I don’t want to say anything hurtful, but I just had to tell you.

Trust me, book two is worth it. I was worried about the exact same thing after my other favourite author totally made me disappointed with the 2nd book in his series. But Pat didn’t do this, if anything I think it’s better.

This is a brief post only to affirm that some of your fans respect and adore you and your work without reservation, complication, or the faintest hint of entitlement. That’s pretty much the only point of this, because I figure it can’t hurt, and might make a great author feel good, which would far and away be the most important thing I’ve done all day.

I enjoyed the WPR interview. I was happy that the guy from Lansing asked the question about why Kvothe was a musician. The traveling entertainer was fascinating and treasured, as well as being a mystery and a threat!

    Dear Pat,
I’m never going to ask you to come to Australia simply for the fact that if you do it gives me one less reason for me to go to America, and I really want to go to America.

On a side note, that interview you did with Brandon Sanderson was amazing.

… damnit. I’m tempted to drop everything and go to LA on the 8th now. It’s only a 8 or 9 hour drive, after all..
I already have my book signed though, from the midnight signing in San Francisco (I was near the end of the line, asked about the Chronicler, and had it signed “To Sir Trevor of the Beard”. I don’t think you’ll remember, though, seeing how it was around 2:30 in the morning)
Is it possible to have my book signed twice? Just because?

Man, I’m just sad that I keep missing you. I mean, I live in Texas, and I had to leave for college the day before you did one of your Houston signings. Oh well. I’ll make one eventually! *Pumps fist enthusiastically*

    Dear Pat,
I just wanted to let you know, and this is in no way related to this blog (sorry), that it is in large part because of you that I have recently decided to pick up my violin again. I played for 12 years and ended up putting it down because of demands on my time in college and working two jobs, etc. It always made me sad that my violin was reduced to gathering dust under the bed, especially because it belonged to my late Grandfather. Still, I’ve put off picking it up again for a million reasons, none of them worth describing further.

Reading about Kvothe’s love for his lute and the transformation that took place within him when he played was akin to poking a sleeping bear mid-winter and something in my deepest of places cried out for me to end this nine-year hiatus and get back to making music again. I am signed up for private lessons and will be auditioning to get back into a local symphony orchestra. (wish me luck!)

Thank you Mr. Rothfuss for the creation of Kvothe, the fictional musician who has inspired me to swallow my pride, put myself out there again and hopefully share a lovely song with the world. Granted it may take some time before it sounds lovely, but at least I’ll be smiling along the way!

    One of your many fans,
    ~Renee

:D Kvothe’s not fictional, it just happened a very, very, VERY long time ago!

I love knowing that someone has been inspired by Kvothe’s passion, I would be, but ashamedly I don’t play any instruments.

      Thank you :)

I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story. I have been a voraciou reader for some time but a few months ago I noticed I was having difficulty seeing and soon discovered I have cataracts (at 40!). I’m currently on a waiting list for surgery, I can’t drive or watch tv long, and worst of all I can’t reador play my video games/hang on line too much anymore (pew pew pew- Dragon Age was fun, go look up Grim Dawn which is the aftermath of Titan Quest). Anyhoot, a friend purchased the audio book version of your books and I’ve listened to them in place of all those things htat used to occupy my time (real life, work, talking to people in person- ick). I just want to thank you, your writing and story have been the perfect movie in my mind. Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the books and I just wanted to thank you for taking the time, hard work, and perserverence to bring us Kvothe and his world. Thank you.. now I’m going to sit in the dark until the next one comes out….

I can certainly sympathize with losing time with your newborn but I know I and lots of your other Southern fans would be delighted if you would get closer to our region than Austin and Washington DC. I would be wonderful if you could schedule a signing in Atlanta or some other large Southeastern city.

    :)

Wow… of all the things in Pat’s blog worth chatting about, the main thing people are writing about is the one thing he asked them not to… Way to show you respect the author. Why not chat about the book instead? Like maybe… Does anyone else have a huge interest in a soundtrack one day coming out with some of the songs Kvothe is always talking about? Denna’s song about Lanre the hero, maybe a snippet of the song Kvothe’s parents tried to write? Fellurian’s song? Tinker Tanner for sure! and the one he sang with Denna to get his talent pipes. I’d pay good money for a CD like that. Pat could maybe hold a sort of contest and have his fans write the music (or at least the words to the music), then have another contest for the fans who are also musicians to write the actual music. I think it’d be fun as hell, and I’ve never heard of anyone doing anything like it before…

You know, I bet he would allow people to do just that, make a CD I mean, if the proceeds were donated to his charity. I think I remember some music done in years past that was posted on this blog. I wonder if they’ve done anything more with their “Kvothian” music.

As for Tinker Tanner, it would be cool if there was just a set musical meme that everyone could donate verses to. I mean, aside from the verses already in the books. Something everyone knows the music to, like “twinkle twinkle little star” or some such, and then there would be verses ad nauseum.

I cannot even begin to properly express how excited I am to go to the signing at Skylight Books tonight in Los Angeles. I was out of the country for the last LA signing, which caused me several moments of great consternation. Can’t wait to meet you Pat! And all the rest of the Kingkiller fans in my city as well !

PS I am seriously considering decorating my motorcycle in some way for the ride over to Skylight tonight….if anyone has ideas on how I could honor Pat and his Awesomeness, I am open to suggestions : )

I am really looking forward to meeting you in Austin, Pat.

I can honestly say I haven’t done the “meet the author” thing but once previously (that was with Clive Barker, and only because a friend wanted to go). I loved ‘The Name of the Wind’ and am currently really enjoying ‘The Wise Man’s Fear’ (almost reading it slowly as I don’t want it to end, as silly as that sounds) that when I saw you’d be in Austin I decided I had to go (it’s only about an hour from me).

Look for the big burly longhaired guy. That’s me. :D

    Jeff

PS- You and Brent Weeks are quite easily my favorite “contemporary” fantasy writers (you two are up there period, and I hate the term ‘contemporary’) so it was especially cool to see that blog post of you interviewing Brent. Good stuff, sir. ;)

Pat, thank you for coming down to Austin!

I had planned on making it to the signing in Houston, but work got in the way. I was able to drive up from San Antonio after work and make it to Austin, though, and it was well worth the trip and the lost sleep. We had a great time, and appreciate you coming down to Texas – multiple times. On a re-read of Wise Man’s Fear now, wonderful stuff.
