Books From DAW

This is a Worldbuilders blog.

DAW is my publisher, and understandably close to my heart. They’re the ones that took a risk on me back in the day, and decided to print The Name of the Wind. That also means, in a roundabout way, that if not for DAW, Worldbuilders wouldn’t exist, either.

As if that weren’t enough, they’ve also donated boxes of lovely books to the fundraiser as well….

  • A first edition, hardcover set of Shadowmarch by Tad Williams: Shadowmarch, Shadowplay, Shadowrise and Shadowheart.

“Tad Williams is already regarded as one of fantasy’s most skilled practitioners, and this latest work more than confirms that status.” – Amazing Stories

  • Two sets of Sorrow, Memory and Thorn by Tad Williams: The Dragonbone Chair, Stone of Farewell, and To Green Angel Tower.

Pat’s Note: Back when I was working on the early drafts of what would become the Kingkiller Chronicle, these books had a huge impact on me. They were huge, complex books, and seeing them in print gave me hope that someday I might actually be able to publish my book too….

“Epic fantasy you can get lost in for days, not just hours” – Locus

  • One first edition hardcover copy of This Alien Shore by C. S. Friedman.

“C. S. Friedman makes fantastic things — and frightening things — seem very real. Her characters are people, not just place-holders, and the worlds she creates are as tangible as a live feed from the battlefront or a crash-landing in a savage and unfamiliar wilderness. ” – Tad Williams

“Space opera with brains.” – Locus

  • A first edition hardcover set of Fool’s Gold by Jude Fisher: Sorcery Rising, Wild Magic, and The Rose of the World.

“The nerve-wracking, intoxicating conclusion of the Fool’s Gold series is the fabulous, multilayered, poetic story of a world, full of complex, painfully real, endearingly vulnerable characters, on the very brink of either enlightenment or extinction.” – Booklist (starred Review)

  • A first edition hardcover set of The Elemental Masters by Mercedes Lackey: The Serpent’s Shadow, Phoenix and Ashes, The Wizard of London, and Reserved for the Cat.

“Lackey is a spellbinding storyteller who keeps your heart in your mouth as she spins her intricate webs of magical adventure.” – Rave Reviews

“… blends historical fiction with folklore and mythology to create a fantasy suitable for all ages.” – The Barnes & Noble Review

  • A hardcover set of The Mage Winds Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey: Winds of Fate, Winds of Change, and Winds of Fury.

“Lackey’s talent for world building comes to the fore in her vivid description of the Hawkbrothers’ culture, while her strength of characterization remains constant. Fans of the popular Valdemar series will create a demand for this solid fantasy.” – Library Journal

  • A first edition hardcover set of Valdemar: Darian’s Tale by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon: Owlsight, Owlflight and Owlknight.

“[Mercedes Lackey & Larry Dixon are] an unbeatable team in fantastic magic and adventure.” – Kliatt

“Prolific writer Lackey tackles the complex legend of King Arthur’s queens in this compelling and heart-wrenching retelling… Lackey reweaves old tales to create something new and powerful, with a compelling and sympathetic heroine, is this retelling’s strength.” – Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Made with the active assistance of Mercedes Lackey, creator of the fantasy kingdom of Valdemar, and DAW editor Betsy Wollheim, this is about as official a companion as there could be. It is high time, too, since Valdemar is beginning to rival Darkover in the number of stories set there and in the multitude of its fans. ” – Booklist

  • A set of the collected volumes of The Novels of Tiger and Del by Jennifer Roberson: Sword-Dancer & Sword-Singer, Sword-Maker & Sword-Breaker, and Sword-Born & Sword-Sworn.

Sword-Dancer is an admirable introduction to the six-volume adventures of Tiger and Del, one of fantasy’s more popular and appealing odd couples…. Roberson comes out swinging and delivers some dramatically powerful sequences.” – SF Reviews.net

Original Stories Based on the Song of Janis Ian.

“This dazzling, highly original anthology, ignited by the meeting of songwriter Ian and a host of SF writers affected by her music at the 2001 Worldcon, showcases 30 mostly superior stories, each based on one of her songs.” – Publisher’s Weekly

  • One first edition hardcover set and one trade paperback set of the Coldfire trilogy by C. S. Friedman: Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls and Crown of Shadows.

“Some of the best writing I have seen in quite a while, and the ending is excellent. Very highly recommended.” – Science Fiction Review

  • One first edition hardcover copy of The Collected Short Fiction of C. J. Cherryh.

“This massive and valuable collection reprints all of Cherryh’s short fiction, beginning with the contents of two out-of-print theme collections […] Cherryh crafts even less impressive stories well enough to verify her reputation for brilliance and versatility.” – Booklist

“Lackey’s latest juices up the plot of the ballet Swan Lake… This is well-crafted Lackey, which means well-crafted period, fully appreciable without any prior knowledge… Heartily recommended.” – Booklist

  • A hardcover set of the Smoke series  by Tanya Huff: Smoke and Shadows, Smoke and Mirrors, and Smoke and Ashes.

“A wild romp, full of dark humor, a delightfully twisted version of the usual haunted house story.” – Locus

“A master of urban fantasy.” – Library Journal.

  • A hardcover set of Green Rider, First Rider’s Call and The High King’s Tomb by Kristen Britain.

Green Rider is a stunning first novel for what I hope will be a long career of story-telling and suspenseful intrigue. You’ve a really talented new writer here.” – Anne McCaffrey

I’ve been really interested in getting to Tad Williams’s stuff, but between Butcher and Gaiman it’s been somewhat difficult. Have you read many of his writings?

The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy is fantastic. I haven’t read anything else he has done.

I really liked The War of the Flowers, too….

I loved War of the Flowers…

… but MST kept me reading fantasy when I was about to give up on it for good.

Otherland is clearly his best work. It ist very famous here in Germany.

Tad Williams is an amazing author. I’d read all his Fantasy stuff when I met my now husband, who had all his Sci-Fi stuff. We swapped and agreed he’s just as good at both.

My one complaint: he completes a series with like 4,000,000 unresolved subplots, leaving me feeling like the whole story was never told.

Speaking of, did that baby born during the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy ever get its own story? That one person seemed pretty insistent that it would be REALLY IMPORTANT later…

Perhaps he takes a George R. R. Martin approach to these “plot” characters.

Nah – I’d be happy with a ‘make me love a character then kill it’ couple chapters or whatever… these just fade into obscurity after piquing interest (though he has done a couple short stories involving some of the main supporting characters from his series).

All Tad’s books are great. Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is fantastic if you can get through the first 200 pages or so. Otherland is also amazing. Personally I didn’t enjoy Shadowmarch quite as much as his other work, but its still better than most. If you just want to check him out without having to read like, 5billion pages, then try The War of the Flowers. Great stand-alone novel.

I’d kill for that copy of Black Swan. The cover art is gorgeous.
…not to judge a book by its cover.

All those Mercedes Lackey books? OMG, want so much. Could I not feed my toddler for a couple of weeks and donate some more money? He doesn’t want to eat anything I feed him anyway, it’s always, “No.”

Speaking of, I need to go pick up my copy of Under the Veil.

Ok, sorry, didn’t mean to go all fangirl about another author, but I love her books so much. And I see a lot of connections between the Heralds series and Kingkiller, at least in how much music plays a part. Maybe you need your own filk band, too, Pat.

Ah, man, I think so many books I own are DAW. The only ones mentioned here that I’ve read are the Green Rider books. Most of mine are still packed up, but I also remember enjoying some of the Sunsword series. Very interesting mixture of culture.

I just started The Sun Sword series by Michelle West this year. I’ve really enjoyed it too, and agree that the cultures are quite interesting and complex. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but those story elements not concluded in that series are continuing in The House War series, also published by DAW.

The first three books, already published, tell more of the backstory before Sun Sword, and the fourth book, Skirmish: A Novel of the House War, Book 4 is due January 3rd, 2012 and picks up directly from where the Sun Sword series concluded. With it’s publication there will be twelve novels set in this world (along with a novel’s worth of short stories) and imo it ranks as one of the greatest of the Epic Fantasies.

If anyone’s looking for more DAW books to check out, I’d very much suggest the novels in this series.

Last year I spent quite some time determining how to donate to Worldbuilders as a gift, in order to present someone with the donation in their name.

See, every year my daughter donates to charities in the names of her grandparents and gives that to them for Xmas. Most charity donation websites allow you to donate for someone and gives you the option to print out a nifty little “hey, $__ was donated in your name to ____ charity!” card. Or you fill in a tiny form with name/address info of the gift recipient and the charity foundation will hand-write or print/mail a card for you.

It wasn’t on the FAQ last year (I swear. It wasn’t.) so if anyone else is looking for the options, here’s the FAQ that covers how to get gift card options when donating. :)

Wow. A lot of great books in this batch. Think I already own them all, but I’d love that Coldfire Trilogy set. One of my personal favorites.

Her more recent trilogy is so far excellent, as well. I’ve only just begun the third book, but enjoyed the first two immensely.

You know, I donated what I could to just donate, was not all to worried about getting picked in any of the drawings, but I have to admit I’m pretty excited about seeing things like the First Editions of Darians Tale by Mercedes Lackey.

Or any of the hardbacks of hers I see on here.

    Always been a big fan.

Lots of great stuff this year!

My wife just told me, “Your not getting presents for Christmas, I am just going to donate whatever money we’d spend to Worldbuilders in your honor, and maybe you’ll win something cool as a bonus.”

I told her, “That’s a fantastic idea.” So she passed along to our friends to do the same things for us. Let’s see what happens.

My family was going to donate to Heifer rather than buy Christmas presents this year, but I sent them the link to Worldbuilders and told them the whole deal (matching donation, more goats, badass writer, blah blah blah). So they’re doing that instead. And my uncle bought both your books. I feel like that’s better than getting presents. Thanks, Pat.

PS – why is there no link to the Tinker’s Packs on your homepage? I have it bookmarked, and I’m not so dense that I can’t find it on my own, but still…
