This is a Worldbuilders blog.
Well, after yesterday’s post, we cleared our previous goal of 225,000 dollars, and it was with some hesitation that I moved our new goal up to the full 250K.
I hope we can make it in the next four days.
Today we have a bunch of books donated by The League of Reluctant Adults. A group of authors who have banded together in order to fight crime and protect our world from alien threats. When they’re not doing that, they also maintain a pretty interesting blog.
In this blog, they’ve banded together to send Worldbuilders a bunch of signed books…
- A first edition of Succubus Blues and the first four issues of Dark Swan by Richelle Mead. All signed by the author.
“Richelle Mead delivers sexy action and tongue-in-cheek hellish humor—if damnation is this fun, sign me up! ” —Lilith Saintcrow.
- One audio book of Downpour by Kat Richardson. Case is signed by the author.
“Reading a Greywalker novel is the pinnacle of literary escapism for me. It’s full immersion from the very first words. Downpour begins in typical Richardson style – a brilliant hook and a subtle reference to Chandler all in the first few sentences.”–Paul Goat Allen
- One set of four books of The Simon Canderous Series by Anton Strout. All signed by the author.
“Following Simon’s adventures is like being the pinball in an especially antic game, but it’s well worth the wear and tear.” – Charlaine Harris
Pat’s Note: As I have mentioned on several occasions, Anton Strout is my mortal enemy. He is the focus of many of my evil schemes, and I once had fortune cookies printed up that encouraged people to kill him.
But still, that doesn’t keep us from occasionally doing a podcast together as demonstrated by Episode 18 of his Once and Future Podcast…
- One copy of A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang. Signed by the author.
“Fun and utterly vibrant! Anyone looking for wit, verve, and a fascinatingly complex world in their urban fantasy can stop right here! Allison Pang has what you need.” – Jill Myles
- One set of Mark of the Demon, Blood of the Demon, Secrets of the Demon, and Sins of the Demon by Diana Rowland. All are signed by the author.
“Rowland’s hot streak continues as she gives her fans another big helping of urban fantasy goodness!… The plot twists are plentiful and the action is hard-edged. Another great entry in this compelling series.” – RT Book Reviews
- One copy of My Life as a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland. Signed by the author.
“An intriguing mystery and a hilarious mix of the horrific and mundane aspects of zombie life open a promising new series from Rowland… Humor and gore are balanced by surprisingly touching moments.” – Publishers Weekly
- One set of the Disillusionists: Mind Games and Double Cross by Carolyn Crane. Signed by the author.
Pat’s Note: Disillustionists is one of those titles that I wish I’d come up with first….
“A violent U-turn in a fresh direction… this is urban fantasy’s new shot-in-the-arm.” – National bestselling author Vicki Pettersson
- One copy of A Shot in the Dark by K. A. Stewart. Signed by the author.
“Lots of fun, deftly witty, and one of the most appealing central characters of recent years.” – New York Times Bestselling Author Simon R. Green
- One copy of Trance by Kelly Meding. Signed by the author.
“Dark, dangerous, and delectable…Impossible to put down!” – Gena Showalter, New York Times Bestselling Author
- One copy of Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells. Signed by the author.
“Hold on tight — a gritty new heroine has joined the pantheon of shoot-first, ask-questions-later protagonists. Despite the blistering pace and darkness of the plot, [Wells] neatly balances things with a deft smattering of humor.” – Romantic Times Book Lovers magazine
- One set of Staked, Revamped and Crossed by J. F. Lewis. Signed by the author.
“Raucous, raunchy blood-opera… very satisfying.” – Dark Realms magazine
- One set of The Anna Strong Chronicles by Jeanne C. Stein. Signed by the author.
“A heroine with the charm, savvy and intelligence that fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison will be happy to root for.” – Publishers Weekly
- One set of The Iron Druid Chronicles: Hounded, Hexed and Hammered by Kevin Hearne. Signed by the author.
Pat’s note: I recently red these and really enjoyed them. Odds are if you enjoy Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, you’ll dig these too….
“Kevin Hearne breathes new life into old myths, creating a world both eerily familiar and startlingly original.” – Nicole Peeler, author of Tempest Rising
- One ARC of Loss by Jackie Kessler. Signed by the author.
Pat’s Note: This is actually an ARC of the book that won’t be released until March. So winning this book not only means you get a cool book and a good read, it means you get to taunt your friends….
“Gritty and raw with powerful truths. An addictive read.” – Sophie Jordan New York Times bestselling author of Firelight

Judjing by the fact that the total has gone up 10k since this was posted, I think 250k will be a snap!
It would be nice to see it jump 10K in half an hour. But I actually bumped up the thermometer yesterday night…
Still, I’m hopeful….
So many books. Seriously, how could you have stored them all into your house? I can’t help but imagine your place, right now, could qualify for an episode in Hoarders…
Also, can you give us a sneak peak (trailer) of your novella or novel? Is it sarcastic, epic? Is it a story in the Four Corners. Oh! Is it about that dude that Kvothe sorta meets at the University. Well, not meet, just kinda crosses paths with…brushes shoulders?
Please shed some light. Do not leave me to guess at what it is, my imagination will lead me to places far and away. Terrible places with no water and fewer women. Pat. I’m serious. throw me a bone that I can hit myself in the head with–otherwise it won’t stop churning. Churning. Churning.
Dang. I was all excited, too…
It’s almost to 244 now though, so I’m still confident we’ll make it!
Almost there :-)
This may be a silly question, but do the auction dollars count towards the grand total? I would expect so, but sometimes the Duh train doesn’t stop in my station.
Grand total meaning the money thermometer…
I was curious about the same thing. And the Duh train hasn´t come round these parts (my brain) since nigh on thirty years…
The other question of interest is whether or not auction totals count towards the money thermometer while the auctions are in progress (that is, the count is updated incrementally as new bids come in). If they don’t, then when all of the current auctions close we can expect a significant jump in the donation bar.
I believe the auction dollars are not yet added. Also, I believe that the thermometer is straight donations and will later be matched by 50% (looks like an additional $125,000 will be added).
Hope that helps.
A note on the topic early in Anton’s Podcast about why a single negative outweighs several positives:
I’m not a scientist.
It is my understanding that negative experience is more memorable as an evolutionary technique for avoiding, well, killing yourself. So your brain reacts to, say, burning yourself by saying “We are never, ever, ever doing that again because it could kill us and then we wouldn’t exist and neither would our potential offspring.” A pleasurable experience like a delicious food makes the brain say “That was nice. We should do that again if we can, but if not at least we have some dried mammoth back at the camp so we won’t starve.” Apparently there is no distinction between something potentially dangerous and something we interpret as negative; after it’s been put in the thread “stuff that sucks a lot” it goes straight to the sticky at the top of the page with *Important* in bold red on it.
My subconscious apparently refers to the rest of me as a separate entity.
The auctions are most likely already being counted, since they contain a bulk of the money and our friend Pat here seems anxious about reaching the 250k mark. I doubt he would be as nervous if all that money has yet to be accounted for…
I’m assuming yes, as each bid replacing another, the money-meter goes up in the amount the latest bid is more then the previous one…
The Duh train needs new tracks. Even when you manage to get on; its a pretty shaky ride.
See, I would think that, but I also want to say that maybe Pat’s hoping for a donation total of 250k, saying that without the huge additions of the auctions, there are enough decent people out there to donate a whopping 250k. But that’s going out on a limb.
This is why I like coming to your blog. It’s great to see someone put so much effort into doing life changing things for others…and the extent to which you give of yourself to make this a success is simply amazing. Well done, sir.
Donatiom complete. I got a warm fuzzy feeling in my stomach after doing that and it wasn’t gas! Yah!
Sorry…I had to temper the gushy post above with something silly.
Just thought I’d say, Long time reader, first time donator. Don’t know what triggered the donation exactly… maybe it was the aptly titled League of Reluctant Adults that twinged my guilt fibers… or the fact that constantly hearing about the goodness of others has finally compacted my coal-like heart into something more shiny… Whatever the reason, after donating I almost couldn’t care if I won anything. Almost. This is a wonderful feeling.
Now I get it when people thank you for doing this. As an introvert, I wouldn’t really be able to pull off all the business ends that must be wrapped up in such a process, so thanks for doing what I can’t.
Luke, your comments made me so happy I had to go donate again myself. Thanks for joining in!
Wow, more than $240,000 for such an amazing organization. This is some kind of cool.
Luke,
Glad we could be your tipping point!
I don’t think the auctions are part of the thermometer. Worldbuilders matches 50% of everything donated and since the auction stuff is already donated I doubt worldbuilders is matching 50% of what is bid.
Dear Pat:
Hundreds, perhaps thousands of people, many of them kids, have not died because of you.
I thought it was a fact worth stating.
