Suvudu Cage Match….

Two years ago, Suvudu hosted a sci-fi fantasy cage match, where they pitted fictional characters against each other in a tournament style series of one-on-one fights.

It was a cool concept, and it led to interesting match ups like Cthulhu vs Lyra. Cthulhu being an omnipotent elder god from the outer darkness, and Lyra being a plucky 13 year-old girl from Oxford.

Simply said, good times were had.

Kvothe was one of the characters they chose that first year, which was flattering, as back then I only had the one book out, and I was very new to the scene.

Even more surprising was the fact that Kvothe won his first match. Then his second. He made it all the way to the semi-finals after beating  Dumbledore, Garret Jax, and Aslan.

Y’know. Now that I’m thinking of it, I’m going to retroactively award myself an achievement for that. Because it was awesome.

In my opinion, the best part of the cage matches was the fact that Suvudu posted write-ups describing how they thought the fights would settle out.

Even better, they invited the authors to submit their own write-ups, so WE could describe how we thought the fights would go.

I did a write up for Kvothe vs. Aslan, then later did another for Kvothe vs. Jamie. It was the most fun I’d had writing in a long time. At that point in my life, trapped under the crushing weight of book two, it reminded me that writing could actually be fun….

*     *     *

Fast forward to today. Suvudu is running another tournament, and this time Bast is one of the players….

The Suvudu Cage Matches have been going for a couple weeks. I’ve been meaning to mention them here on the blog for a while, but I’ve been busier than usual lately, so I’m only now getting around to it.

Bast’s first opponent was Seregil, from Lynn Flewelling’s Nightrunner series.

I read the first two books of Lynn’s series and liked them. But in addition to being busy, I really wasn’t able to come up with a good idea for a scene between the two of them. I briefly entertained the thought of writing it up as a kissing contest between Bast and Seregil, but that seemed kind of… inappropriate.

Lynn, of course, is a better person than me, and did a delightfully playful write-up of the bout between them that you can see over on Suvudu’s site. It was a good scene, and I expected her to win because of it. But Bast squeaked by….

Bast’s second fight was against Richard Rahl. And again, I found myself at a loss for an idea for a scene. My only idea there was something involving bondage. And since I’m still fuzzy on the parody-as-fair-use laws, I decided to focus on a few interviews I was late on and the questions in my translator questions instead. Luckily, Bast won through that one without my help, too.

Now it’s the third week, and Bast is going head to head with Anomander Rake from Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

I feel like a bit of a slacker by this point, like I should really do a write up for this one.

So here goes….

“So, Rake,” Bast said. “At last we meet again for the first time.”

“Indeed,” said Anomander Rake, tossing his flowing white hair over his shoulder.

Bast looked over his opponent calmly. “I’ve heard tell that you are old as ages.”

Rake nodded, his face giving nothing away.

“I’ve also heard that you are well versed in the arcane arts, you have a floating fortress, and that you..” Bast snuck a quick look at a piece of paper he held cupped in the palm of his hand, “…can turn into a dragon.” Bast looked up, his expression a little disgusted. “Seriously? You can turn into a dragon, too?”

Rake had the decency to look slightly abashed, if only very slightly. “Yeah,” he said. “All that and a bag of chips, too.”

“And you’re also nigh-invulnerable,” Bast said.

“That’s The Tick, actually,” Rake said grudgingly. “But yeah. I’m pretty much nigh.”

Bast nodded at this, seemingly unsurprised. “I see,” he said gravely. Taking a deep breath, he looked up, meeting the tall man’s eyes. “All that aside, do you seriously think you can eat more pie than me?”

Okay. I’ll admit it. I haven’t read Erikson’s series. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, and it’s on my list. It’s even a complete series, which is a huge selling point in my opinion. (*ahem*) But it’s also ten books long. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Given that I don’t know anything about Rake (And I don’t care to, thank you very much. So no spoilers, please.) I’m going to have pass on writing a full scene for this match too.

Right now, Bast is taking a bit of a drubbing, and perhaps rightly so. If he loses this round, I’ll still be proud he made it this far.

But I’ll also be a little sad. Because if Bast wins this round against Rake, and Zaphod Beeblebrox wins his match against Saphira…

…then the next round would be Bast vs. Zaphod.

So I’m not saying anyone *should* go and vote. I’m just saying that if the Bast vs. Zaphod match ends up happening, I would write the hell out of that scene.

That’s all I’m saying.

Rothfussians, assemble! I absolutely voted for Bast, and I am SO hoping you’ll have an opportunity to write a Bast-Zaphod battle.
…And I hate to bring this up but it’s “Cthulhu,” not “Cuthulu.” A bit like “Cthaeh,” now that I think about it… *Whistles innocently*

Apologies Pat, wasn’t intended as a condescending or derisory smiley; just nice to see even the great authors can mistype in haste. Wasn’t even a wang-waving smiley over a minor typo.

ASCII is so limiting when applied to smilies.

The thing I find interesting about the typo is that it wasn’t just a minor difference (i.e. “wom” instead of “won”) it was a different word with the same pronunciation (“one”).

I find I do this too. When I’m writing quickly and not paying enough attention, I will swap one homonym for another.

It’s not that I don’t know the difference, or the correct spelling, it just slips in.

My theory is that we first learn words by their sounds/meanings, not spelling, so I think our brains store the words that sound the same in the same space, and then later refine the words based on meaning and spelling.

Sort of like all words that sound like “one” are stored in memory location 2, and “one” is at 2.a and “won” is at 2.b.

So, when we are not paying enough attention, we ask for the spelling at location 2.. and we get one of the possible spellings stored there.

I wonder if which one we get is random, or the first one we learned, or the one we use the most?

Oh, the agony. Vote for the noble patrician, the grieving shepherd who has shielded his flock and given them hope for hundreds of thousands of years (who is also pretty much the most overpowered character in the bracket)–or go Zaphod vs Bast? This bears some deep soul-searching.

Pat: seriously consider reading the Malazan books. If they have one resoundingly powerful aspect to them, its the depth of the worldbuilding you find in them. Erikson is an anthropologist, and it shows: he’s built this world, its races, religions, and cultures, from the ground up with a detailed history spanning a quarter million years or more. If you can get over the “sink or swim” aspect of being thrust into this hyper-complex world (and some of the earlier books laying on the nihilism a bit thick)… a feast of detail and delight awaits.

Plus the series is chock full of incredible moments. Just saying.

      Posted March 21, 2012 at 9:55 AM | Permalink

I agree. The Malazan world was borne from a GURPS campaign, which should tickle your geeky parts, Pat. The world, its cultures, and its ancient histories are all FULLY fleshed out. I think you’ll find that aspect of the series inspirational. Erikson’s background as an anthropologist indeed informs the richness of the world and its many societies. All that, and he’s still able to take the stories in unexpected directions. The payoffs are worth waiting for, and it’s rare when you feel like you’re actually waiting. Quite a feat over so. many. pages.

I’m highly interested in your opinion of these books once you find the time to read them!

Can’t comment on the battles – cheering for Bast though. Just wanted to say that I’ve loved both books (kind of inhaled them) and am proselytising while waiting (relatively) patiently for number three. And thanks for the list of recommended reading on your site Pat – I’m teaching a unit of Fantasy right now in senior high school (Australia NSW year 11, 16-17 yr olds) to the top academic students. It is a great help to point them in many different directions. Tomorrow I’m doing a presentation on your books for them as a sample of what they need to do for their first assessment task (sorry, won’t make much sense to those from other education systems I guess. Sorry to say,

but I can’t think of anything you can come up with in Part III that would grant Bast the slightest chance of winning a match against Rake. Maybe Kvothe was able to trick Aslan last year, but that just wont happen against Rake.

So since this a who-wins-the-match decision and not a who-do-you-like-better decision my vote is for Rake.

    Hi Pat,
Just wanted to help clear up the fair-use exemption issue for you…
The Supreme Court explains the purpose of the fair-use exemption (17 U.S.C § 107) is to promote development in the arts and sciences, where otherwise they might be hampered by lawsuits from copyright holders. Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc., 510 U.S 569 (1994). There are a few guidelines that will help keep you in the straight and narrow.
    1) Parodies necessarily have to barrow copyrighted material to accomplish their goal
    2) The determination of whether a parody will fall under the fair use exemption is a ‘weighted test’, basically judges want to see certain things.
    A) The work is transformative in nature; take something and make it something new
    B) The commercial nature; something that isn’t created to make money is favored
    C) Public Interest; Works of art benefit the public and are thus favored
    D) The amount barrowed; Did you use just enough to evoke the reference to the original in the minds of the readers/listeners, or are you simply copying a lot from the original because your lazy and want to piggyback on another’s creations
    E) Market competition; The less market competition your new work has with the original the better. Real word example; someone that has a song for sale on iTunes is not competing for sales with someone’s parody version of that song on YouTube. (Different audiences)

As much as I’d love to see you do a write up of Bast and Zaphod, because I truly love them both, I’m afraid your comment/ “promise” to do it has caused a bit of controversy on the Suvudu boards. Some people have taken it out of context and are claiming that this type of “bribery” is unfair and makes the results biased. They’re not blaming you, rather they’re blaming Suvudu for mentioning it on the page.

Personally I would love to see your bit, as the only reason I was introduced to your series in the first place is because I read your first write-up a couple of years back and was super impressed with the character/your style. I voted for Bast because he’s the shit, but also because I don’t know anything about Rake and wouldn’t be able to give a fair assessment of the fight. Then again, I’m sure that many people vote simply for who their favorite is, not necessarily who they think will realistically win in these fights, because let’s face it, the fights don’t take the respective characters’ universes into account and are not completely “fair.” The point of these cage matches, I believe, is to introduce new authors to people and to have a bit of fun, so I think that the naysayers over on Suvudu are taking it a bit too seriously. :S

I’m actually kind of surprised Bast won against Richard Rahl. No offense or anything, I love Bast he’s an awesome character and I’m not an uber fan of Terry’s writing quite the same as yours, but Richard is sort of the shit and kills everyone/everything with his awesome dance w/ death. I’m totally going to go read that bout right now. Its not that Bast isnt a badass, its just he has a lot less scenes being a badass as Richard does in Terry’s books and Bast has traditional Fae weaknesses from what I understand. But then again, there is always the element of surprise with Fae and thats not really something Richard Rahl would be able to recognize being a Westlander….

Yah okay, critcal analysis over…I will now bore my old man with symantics of this battle….

I voted for Kvothe last year all the way through, but I can’t pick Bast over Anomander Rake. As much as I love Bast, I just can’t imagine any possible world in which he beats Anomander in a cage fight.

I can. As far as we know, Bast is an incredibly ancient and bad-ass Fae creature with his own alternate world where “things work differently.”

Bast opens a passage, then tricks Rake into entering. Rake’s powers don’t work there, and Bast roasts Rake over a fire…

      Tzatziki sauce anyone?

Thats partially the reason I was surprised Bast was winning. We really dont know what he can do, given we’re not totally clear yet what Fae are capable of in Pat’s series. Not a big deal for the story or anything, but a pretty big deal when it comes down to the decision of a cage fight. I just dont have enough information on Bast to make an educated decision. (which sounds silly, but I take my hobbies seriously man!)

However now that I’ve gone over to the website and seen how the win tally works, I’m not so surprised that Bast is winning, as it isnt actually decided based off what characters can do in there respective series and anyone can vote reader or not. Nothing wrong with that, just wasnt what I had immediately pictured.

          Posted March 21, 2012 at 8:12 PM | Permalink

The way I see it, there is no way to determine in any reasonable manner who would win if the two actually met (no matter how powerful a character is, they always have an Achilles heel), so it’s all about who you want to win and then you come up with a way to justify the victory… ;-)

          Go Bast!

“That’s partially the reason I was surprised Bast was winning. We really don’t know what he can do”

            Maybe.

Pat seems to be sticking with general fae rules and I’m not saying Satyr’s arent badass, I think they have like a +5 level adj, but we do have a vast amount of information on Richard Rahl and all I’m saying is Pat would have to pull out some serious adjustments on Bast’s character to even make his power comparable.

Richard is a main character, Bast is supporting cast. He couldnt even use magic to fight Richard because of his agiel and there is no way I’d believe Bast is better with a weapon. He is still Kvothe’s student. I mean even when Bast first attempts to attack Chronicler upon meeting him he is stopped by Kote (Not even Kvothe) and bruised from the incident. That doesnt inspire a lot of faith in me that he’d be able to beat Fuer grissa ost drauka.

I’m not in anyway trying to diss Bast, or Pat or anything, I’m just being honest, I’ve read both series, Pat is a way better author than Terry ever dreamed he could be and that is why Bast is winning the cage match. Terry is a creep asshole and Pat is a generally awesome guy who takes time to write emotion evoking novels and cares more about his story than his wallet. I feel zero loyalty to Goodkind, but I’m not going to lie that I think Bast would win a fair fight against the Lord Rahl.

            Posted March 22, 2012 at 9:23 PM | Permalink

I don’t think Bast is a Satyr. I recommend rereading Bast’s scenes again. Bast handled those guys that gave Kote problems. I don’t think Kvothe would allow Bast to hang around unless he was special. I got the impression Bast is trying to learn something Fae aren’t normally taught and only Kvothe is willing to teach him. That doesn’t mean that Bast isn’t very powerful in a different way. My money is that Pat has some surprises in store re: Bast, in book three.

Fae like to play games. They like to hide behind glamour and pretend to be weak while they are really demi-gods. Have you read Patricia Briggs’ “Mercy Thompsons” series (if not, I highly recommend it!)? The Fae appear to be weak and ordinary, and turn out to be incredible bad-asses. My money is that Bast has some surprises in store. I could be wrong, but there are a number of small hints that suggest that this might be true.

That said, Fae are good at enthralling. There is no reason to believe that characters from other “worlds” are immune to Fae magic from Kvothe’s.

Without a consistent set of rules that applies to both, there is no way to compare the two.

That’s the whole point of the cage matches. There is no right answer. Just fun in coming up with a winner, and some cooked up story of why they would win.

hmm, I will definately re-read those scenes. But hooves and goat eyes really scream satyr to me. But I’m totally wrong all the time so I will definately check that out. Havent read the series you mentioned, but I’ll add it to my reading list. Sounds pretty cool and I can see what you mean.

I didnt mean to suggest that anyone was immune to fae magic. Its pretty much the best thing any fae has going for them and I’m not totally sure what they do even qualifies as magic, I just like talking out my ass quite a bit. (I know in D&D they are spell like abilites, not actual spells)

I see what you mean, all the worlds are so different its fun to speculate and this offered some interesting chat up sessions with my buddies.

My bet is that a load of puppies and kittens and other animals who are thought to be cuddly and somewhat cute will DIE if Bast doesn’t win.

    Don’t kill the cute animals.

Vote for Bast before it’s too late.

NO ONE EATS MORE PIE THAN BAST!

Who says a cage match can’t be a pie-eating contest?

Zaphod still has a chance, but I´m afraid it´s looking pretty bad for Bast.

I am a huge fanboy. I try to find a copy of the book to buy in every country I visit while living in Europe. I’ve bought tons of stuff from the tinkers pack, whether it be shirts or calendars or books. When people find out I like to read and ask what my favorite book is, Name of the Wind is my immediate response.

I voted for Anomander Rake. If I would have visited the cage match sooner, I’d have voted for Richard Rahl. The problem is that this is a simulated, ‘who do you think would win in a fight’ question, not ‘which character is from your favorite book’ question. In the few scenes that Bast steals, he is definitely amazing. We just don’t know enough about him. You guys are all saying “imagine the powers he could have!” but…I know the quality of Richard Rahl and his abilities. I’ve read what, nine, ten, very large books in which he has grown and developed abilities and skills that would clearly lead to dominating just such a cage match throw down.

The same thing can be said of Anomander Rake. All of the people posting, “Oh he’s just a super-overpowered-haxx0rz-guy no fair!1!!” Read the series. While Rake is powerful, I’d say he would be hard put against Karsa Orlong, Dancer, Kallor, Trake, Tool, Caladan Brood…to name a very, very small few of the countless great characters in that series. Not to mention that every one of the previous characters stated simply pales in comparison to the devastation that is Icarium. I can only imagine that they didn’t put him into the cage fight because he would have inadvertently killed everyone else that is also on the internet at the time of its posting.

      Agreed!

I havent read the Malazan Series, but I definately will now since everyone here seems to have really enjoyed it.

I’ve read Goodkind though, and Richard Rahl is a killer, Suvudu lists his weakness as Kahlan, but Drefen totally killed Kahlan in book 4 I think, and Richard just ripped his spine through his guts…thats one badass weakness. Hands down. Bast would most likely loose. (I have no idea why they didnt list Bast as being weak to Iron, which is pretty obvious from the books) Now I would be hard pressed to call a winner between Richard Rahl and Kvothe.

That would be the shit. Dance with Death vs Lethani. Hell yes, where do we buy the tickets? Kvothe’s ingenuity is astounding and I think that’d be real good match in fantasy land.

I hope next year they pick Faelurian, someone said that on the comments over at suvudu and I thought that would be pretty sweet. Devi would be a fun one too. Or Elodin LOL. That would rock. The little story segments would be so funny!

Don’t get me wrong; Kvothe is severely awesome, and your books are even awesomer.

But . . . Kvothe beats Dumbledore? DUMBLEDORE! I ain’t buying it. Dumbledore’s magic isn’t rooted in physics like Kvothe’s is. A little green spell, and Kvothe is a dead man. Granted, maybe Dumbledore isn’t ruthless enough to get the job done, and perhaps that’s the issue more than talent and capability. Nonetheless, I’d like see how that bout went down.

    DUMBLEDORE?

We don’t know quite how powerful Kvothe gets in book 3 before he ‘breaks’. If Kvothe can wake his sleeping mind and get Dumbledore’s Name…

The really absurd thing is Jamie Lannister making it to the final. I like Jamie, but no way he gets to the final.

I discovered The name of the wind thanks to Suvudu Cage Match. I got curious about that Kvothe character and decided to try the book. No regret, I loved it.

I think a Saphira vs. Bast cage match would be more awesome! But that’s mostly because Zaphod annoys me and I like Saphira lots.

I just thought of an unrelated idea. You adding that link to the Tinker’s Packs made me think it would be really cool if you had a Gallery of all the art that your illustrator makes for the blog. I like to go back and look at it but specific ones aren’t always easy to find. Just a thought.

    Hey everyone,

It’s not looking good. In the past 12 hours Rake has jumped from a 100 vote lead to a 1,000 vote lead. There are still three hours left to vote. Go to your local library and vote on everyone of their computers. Vote on your phone. Hold your best friend’s pet hostage and “encourage” them to vote for Bast (please don’t harm any innocent pets). Do what ever you can to support Bast; it’s not too late.

Well, Bast has fallen, as has Zaphod. Any chance we can get that writeup anyhow? Pretty please? I’m picturing something about as mature as Warlock v. Impossible Man from the New Mutants annual… with the scene fading to black on Bast and Zaphod toasting each other with pan-galactic gargle blasters….

Not that I have completely planned this out in my head already or anything.

Hey Pat, I know you’re busy and all, and there’s probably no way I can not come across as a jerk for bringing this up, but can you please announce that you either aren’t going to do the photo contest anymore or just put the pictures up or something. An “I’m not doing it, sorry.” would be nice really. In less than two weeks it will be a year since you started it. I’d like to know that I can stop waiting. Sorry. Because I’m a jerk. You really have better things to do. But you just have to type that one little sentence and I’ll shut up.

“delightfully playful write-up”. Come on. Lynn could be a better person than you, who knows, but her write-up is stupidly similar to your old write-up and a strong inner voice tells me you took note. Leave shitty attempts at disguise to Seregil. Honestly, Bast mistaking a man for a woman is a comical notion.

*Late post. Had to say it. I can’t be the only one to see a strong similarity. One Love
