(Fantasy) Avengers Assemble!

I’m busy writing stuff and otherwise being awesome.

So instead of a great wordy blog you get a link to an article on Tor.com where they talk about assembling an avengers-style team out of fantasy characters. I was flattered to see that Kvothe got a spot on the team. That’s some rarified air he’s breathing up there with LOTR, Song of Ice and Fire, and the Princess Bride.

Quite aside from the obvious observation that Kvothe would have to be played by Robert Downy Jr. This list raises some interesting questions.

More to the point, a list like that is fanfic waiting to happen. And I personally wonder who Kvothe would:

1. Buddy up with.

2. End up Fighting in a Dark Knight Returns style grudge match.

(Yeah. Yeah. I know. That’s DC. Shut up.)

3. Rub the wrong way.

4. Rub the right way. (If you know what I mean.)

Feel free to speculate away in the comments below. I know I’m going to….

I’m pretty sure Kvothe and Hermione would have increasingly vitriolic arguments about how magic *really* works. This would eventually fireball into a night of angry, angry sex. Afterwards, neither one of them would ever admit that it had happened.

Did somebody say Ron Weasley?! (Very Potter Musical reference. If You haven’t seen it, go to youtube now and have the songs stuck in your head for the next month.)

But while yes, some Hermione-Kvothe would be pretty awesome, Ron showing up, for me, would be decidedly less so.

However, Harry Potter would obviously have to come along and help his two friends out. He has kept the legendary Time-Turner that he uses to turn back time and jump between Hermione and Kvothe just before they started to argue and flash his Patronus Charm that would make Kvothe gasp and then remain silent, if only for a little while.

…. until months later, when Hermione notices that she’s really been feeling under the weather lately…

And let’s be honest, that would be a pretty talented love-child born from that one night of angry, angry sex. With only a minor attitude issue.

Seems likely to me that Kvothe would tiptoe around Vim in slow circles, convinced he would be able to be the one person able to gain her trust…

By the end of the fifth movie, he will still be tiptoeing.

Vim would probably use zink to jerk Kvothe’s emotions around even more than Denna does. Not because she likes him, but because it would make him decompose into a puddle of lust fueled awkwardness.

She is way to prude to ever sleep with him though, which is a bummer. Imagine tin fueled sex with pewter endurance! (Vin and Elend must have had crrraaazy sex, ripping metal off the bedpost and eating it)

Hey, if you think about it, Kvothe is very Elend in some ways, and Vin is very Denna. Match that with Kvothe and Vin’s obvious battle synergy (sympathy makes ANYTHING metal!) and you’ve got yourself a fanfiction in the making.

…I admit I have a strong temptation to write it. What’s that? Tarbean was one of the places Reen took Vin when they were younger? And then Kvothe ran off to the University, further cementing Vin’s opinion that everyone will leave her eventually? Bam, dramatic goldmine.

Legolas and Kvothe would get along at first, until Denna showed up at some party on Legolas’ arm. Hermoine would immediately notice the tension between Kvothe and Denna, and, in an effort to somehow further NOT acknowledge anything happened, spill the whole beans. Denna would become even more distrustful of Kvothe and her own feelings, and disappear once again, leaving poor Legolas in ruins. Kvothe and Legolas would have a drink and a cry, sing a little song, and while Kvothe would eventually get over it, Legolas would still be upset that this blew his only chance at an onscreen (b)romance with someone who was taller than an ewok and significantly less hairy. Yet he would still find comfort in the fact that he will always magically have enough arrows to shoot through even the most complex versions of “the bloodless”.

Afterward, Kvothe might finally realize that the Name of Wind starts with the letter “D”, and changes depending on who calls.

Kvothe and Fezzik would obviously be instant friends, Kvothe touched by Fezzik’s shy compassion.
King Arthur would rile Kvothe in the beginning with his assumption of absolute authority. Given time, Arthur’s nobility and strength would win Kvothe over, though it would take him a long time to admit it.
Kvothe and Legolas would never get on. Period.
Falkor and Kvothe would laugh like old friends together and riding Falkor would move Kvothe to music.
Vin is the perfect love interest for Kvothe. They both deeply commit, would respect each others abilities, and take forever to get on with romancing.
Kvothe would idolize Syrio, recklessly pledging his life to him for the chance to study under the master swordsman. Syrio would scoff and teach him anyway, probably without Kvothe even realising it.

Oh, and I’ve not read the Wheel of Time series.

***Minor spoiler for Wheel of Time***

Kvothe will impress the group with his symmetry and musical skills, until any sort of decision at all comes up and Rand Al’thor casually mentions that he is some crazy, mythical hero incarnate and it’s his way or the highway, period. Battles ensue.

      Wheel of Time Spoilers!)

Battles ensue briefly and Rand wins obviously since he is the Promised One and creation itself (The Wheel of Time) bends to his will. :-) Anyway, Stalinist Rand has regained his good nature at the end of the last book. Stalinist Rand was actually a very clever plot by the Dark Rand to manipulate his character so that even if Rand “won” the last Battle, the Dark One would essentially have turned him evil, into a kind of Darth Vader.

I’m little worried about Arthur. Which Arthur do we talk about? I’ve seen only one part of tv-series and this Arthur was not very bright. He was classical lawful-stupid-brave. But Arthur from Once and the future king would get Kvothe (and Kvothe would get him) very well.

Personally I think Legolas and Kvothe are a little bit too similar to be very good friends but being rather smart, they probably would respect the other. I mean, both are proud of their heritance, loyal to their parents, sensitive (and good – Kvothe is better of course) to the music. They both are ready and able to make seemingly unfit friends, understand emotional problems, keep strong emotions hidden, but aflame, and they both look real good. Yes, I think no close friendship would rise, but otherwise they would be in good terms.

Hermione, ooh, I can perfectly see your own version. But I also think Hermione would talk to Kothe about her personal problems rather than to anyone else. She needs someone smart and wise as a listener, not another “this is white, ths is black, this is right, this is wrong”-type.

The dragon is everbody’s friend just because.
No one takes hime seriously, tho.

here I skip 2 names, haven’t read enough of Wheel of Time and no Mistborn at all.

To make things interesting, I prefer to think Syrio would not like Kvothe. He is a swordsman, and Kvothe is too good with sword, if we consider the fact that he has also shitload of other abilities that he has learned, and that swordfighting is not the heart of his life. Kvothe could probably be at least equal to Syrio and as cool as Syrio is, I don’t think he could accept it with ease.

Fezzik would love Kvothe and try to help him through his dark moments, of course.

Robert Downy Jr. as Kvothe? I understand that’s the Avengers reference but I’ve always envisioned, if your books ever did get made into a movie or a show, that adult Kvothe would be played by Damian Lewis. Damian just reminds me of Kvothe’s characteristics both physically and (to some degree) characteristically. Especially in Homeland when Damian gets pretty mopy.

I think Kvothe and Harry Dresden could cover the first 3.

I think they’d hang out with each other because Harry would encourage Kvothe to chill a bit and Kvothe would inspire Harry (though Harry wouldn’t admit it) to stop the underachieving (an assumption if he were ever in a magic school) because there’s no way he’d let Kvothe’s dedication to excellence in his craft get the upper hand.

However, they’d also be rivals given that they have a similar “core” (for lack of a better word), and they’re both on the same relative level (the top) in terms of intelligence and power .

It would be the the type of friendship where they compete fiercely, engage in a series of escalating pranks that may well resort to fists/magic duels at times, and pretend to hate each other in public.

In the end, however, I believe they’d be really close friends.

        THANK YOU!

I have to agree that Harry should be on the team, but WHICH avenger would Harry be? I mean he does soo well in just about any of the roles. But personally I think he is The Hulk. Here is why.

        1) He is super smart (like Banner). And he really wants to do good.
        2) He likes to protect the ladies… and is unreasonable about it too. I think Thomas and Kvothe might be a little more on the same team when it comes to the ladies than Kvothe and Dresden… I mean Dresden doesn’t have a SINGLE player bone in his body. No where. Nada… He just smashes anyone who hurts a lady, which brings me to my final argument.
        3) Dude who smashes shit better than Dresden? And HOW does he smash it? By harnessing his anger (ok ok not JUST his anger but Dresden has LOTS of anger). And then he smashes.

Yeah, yeah, he could be stark (Armour in Changes). He could be Cap America (he’s always leading the group). But he could be Thor (the lightning chain)? But damnit he loves to smash his way through a problem.

I deem him the perfect hulk.

    1. I totally see Kvothe buddying up to Fezzik! Just seems like his sort of guy, plus he could relax more around him in my opinion. Fezzik could write the rhymes, Kvothe could supply the beat, it’d be beautiful! Plus, Kvothe seems to like picking up strays like Fezzik.

    2. I completely see him fighting dark night returns style against Arthur, for some reason I just dont see them getting along. I never thought much of Arthur though. I think Kvothe would get fed up of his leadership and want to do things his way. (The better way obviously) But we all know Arthur wouldnt relinquish his skills that fast. Plus, Arthur has to have some sort of complex about Ladies Men at this point…..

    3. Completely agree about Hermione. They’d be having a battle of wits from the get go, with Kvothe eventually besting her after explaining that Dragons dont exist and that they are actually Draccus, after which she would skulk off to read Mating Habits for the rest of the adventure….

    4. Vin + Kvothe….I’d love it. That’d be a beautiful union. Or maybe Falkor, I just imagine that Kvothe would constantly be scrathing him behind the ears.

All members of this team become redundant once Vin and Kvothe team up. Vin would burn Iron (or zink, tin, ect.) while Kvothe says the name of Iron (or said metal). Game over man. Gave over.

As far as relational interests, I think Kvothe and Syrio would enjoy blending Water Dancing with Ketan to create the ultimate epic fantasy MMA fighter.

Hermiony and Kvothe would be in a constant battle to establish themselves as the “top student” blowing the curve for everyone else. Hermiony would win because her magic does not have any actual rules or governing laws.

Fantasy Avengers huh? Okay um… So sticking with six members, and keeping it one character per series… Alright, let’s see what i’d think.
    1. Kvothe
    2. Legolas is a good fit…
    3. Wulfgar, from the Drizzt books. Not Drizzt, because Kvothe and Legolas fill up the skinny, resourceful guys pretty well already.
    4. Amara, from Codex Alera. Team needs a resourceful spy like her. Plus, she can fly.
    5. This may seem random, but I’m gonna throw in Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke. Powerful, versatile, and he’s level headed enough to make a good team leader.
    6. Okay, this is even more random than the last one, but if i’m gonna put in someone from A Song of Ice and Fire, I think i’ll have to pick Victarion Greyjoy, after gaining the volcanic arm… Wow, I honestly can’t believe I just typed that, but it seems to fit. Plus, I think every team should have at least one person who qualifies as “the devil on the shoulder.”

And then for the big Nick Fury type leader or ally, I think I’ll put out Listens-to-Wind (aka Injun Joe) from the Dresden Files. Urban Fantasy counts right?

I wouldn’t be able to make a good list but I can offer this:

Kvothe and Jamie (from a song of ice and fire) would hate each other so much if put on the same team.

In a strange turn of events, Syrio and Rand would hook up. Fezzik would officiate the wedding – otherwise he’d barge in and nobody wants that again. Kvothe would simply be an usher along with his new apprentice Falkor. Vin would be THAT girl that didn’t RSVP, screwing with Hermione’s table/seating arrangements. Legolas wouldn’t get drunk at the reception. Arthur wasn’t invited.

This has got to be the most pretentious and downright wacky team suggested so far…not that it seems to be stopping me from posting it anyway…

    1. Kvothe.

    2. Tom Bombadil. Because I really, really want to see them in a band together. Or swapping stories. Something. Anything.

    3. Fezzik. I really love this idea, because Fezzik is…well, Fezzik. He would whoop the Hulk’s butt any day of the week.

    4. Torn between Raistlin and Dalamar. Raistlin because he would have such an incredible rivalry with Kvothe. Dalamar because he reminds me so much of Bast…but I think that’s the only reason. He wouldn’t stand up very well in a fight.

    5. Tasslehoff Burrfoot. (I know, I know, way too many Dragonlance characters in this Avengers team.)

    6. I really like the idea of Harry Dresden on a team. That’d be pretty awesome, especially paired with Kvothe. But if Harry comes along, he has to bring Bob. Because the witty banter between the three of them…words fail. Also, wonder how Murphy would hold up on the team….

Mmm and for the point of this blog entry, i can not imagine who would Kvothe fight in a Dark Knight Returns style grudge match, but i really think he would do Hermione,. slap ron in the head, burn a city and other things.

But what I would really pay to see, is a practice duel in front of the fire and the other guys betwen the Adem fighting style, provided by Kvothe, and Syrio =).

You do realise Kvothe is not a master swordsman? He learned Adem fighting techniques and he is good, but would not be considered close to a master swordsman so you have to figure Syrio or Rand, both master swordsmen, would win fairly easily in a swordfight against Kvothe. Kvothe might be able to distract them with witty banter though.

Pat used the exact same wording to describe what the master adem teacher which i forget her name did while takimg that single perfect step so believe that its safe to assume he is a master swordsmen at this point plus u cant really assume anything of kvothe because the series isnt over and in the next book pat could easily just say kvothe finds the mighty sword of kickassium and slays all gods absorbs there power and eats the universe!

Intro: relatively new reader (ok, second read in three months) who is generally unfamiliar with fantasy. That said….

    1. Kvothe would never, ever accept Arthur as a superior unless he had something meaningful to learn from him, and “Leadership 101” doesn’t seem to be on the list of topics Kvothe cares much about. And he would probably never stop making subtle and not-so-subtle jokes at his expense, including one or two about Arthur’s father having a funny name.

    2. Legolas: not quite friendship, but a lot of respect for him. Perhaps not the other way around. At the very least they would have a lot in common when it comes to great singing.

    3. Hermione: who needs Hermione when you can bring along Demon Devi!? ’nuff said.

    4. Falkor: everyone loves Falkor. Except G’Mork. Expect a horrible joke along the lines of “I once saw a dragon. You look more like an elongated flying dog”.

    6. Have not read Mistborn (on my list).

    7. Syrio Forel: love the personality, but from ASOIF I can actually see someone else getting along better with Kvothe: Jamie Lannister. Without going into any spoilers, I think Kvothe would probably understand Jamie’s uh.. burden. And he certainly knows all about being called nasty names, especially when they’re deserved.

    8. Fezzik: perfect parner for Kvothe. Just… wow.

And I keep imagining, against my better judgement, Kvothe as looking like the HBO representation of Viserys Targaryen. With red hair, that is. Something about the elongated face…

Kvothe will kick everybody’s arse and have some very angry, angry sex with Hermione.

Why is my comment still waiting to be published? Is my grammar really THAT bad?

Had to make an account to get in on this.
    I’d compose a team of

    1. Bod (graveyard book) For the calm planning and leadership
    2. Seth Sorensen (fablehaven) for boldness and the ability to converse with monsters without being made a snack

I’d prefer both Bod and Seth to join after they’ve grown a few years older than they’re represented in their respective books.

    3. Bast (Kingkiller Chronicles) For magic mojo and being a general Smooth Talker
    4. For a Bruiser, I’d like to see the team find a way to leash the Erlking as represented in the dresden files. If Erl isn’t available, any of his goblins would suffice
    5. And Joe Farrell (From Peter S. Beagle’s Short stories) for wild creativity and the ability to pass obstacles in ridiculous and delicious ways. This is a guy who won a duel to the death with bad poetry. He was dueling a ghost.

And in the directing role of Nick Fury, I’d like to see Silas (also of The Graveyard Book)

And I just noticed that I started capitalizing titles halfway through the post.

      I beg forgiveness.

Like the idea of Rand in the group, but honestly I’d really like to see an ent as the hulk stand in.

Since song of ice and fire still is on my read list i focus on the characters i know :) (Been busy, will be dealt with after exams or i’ll fail everything)

    1. Buddy… Hermione, yes the mix kvothe and Hermione would be great but honestly simply being very smart does not seem to do it for Kvothe so… They would however probably have the best of arguments of how things works and who did what :)

    2. Rand, too much alike (temperate, their way or the highway, red hair). Rand a bit more omnipotent, Kvothe a bit more intelligent.

    3. Legolas. The hair. Although Kvothe would as someone said probably want to know elvish i do get the feeling that Legolas would feel used and without a worth aside from his knowing of a unknown (to Kvothe) language. Legolas would cry and refuse to learn Kvothe anything and kvothe would pretend he doesn’t care (but he does).
    4. Vin. Elusive and independent. Add being very much badass and there is not much more to say.

Mmmm something just flew in my head. Kvothe and Snape, having a class of Defense against the dark arts, in betwen adventures.

I think there are two possible ways, the first is they actually grow closer and create some magnificent theory or magic, and the other ones is they just try to kill each other.

Cool list and fun to speculate about.

I agree with the Kvothe and Hermione comparison and the Dresden/Kvothe dynamic as well.

I have been forced to come up with a list as well based on my own bias, here it goes, not that anyone cares:

    1. Locke Lamora (from ‘The Lies of Locke Lamora’)- An excellent leader, master planner and schemer, fits the Tony Stark role of jack of all trades, master of none.

    2. Araris Valerian (from ‘The Codex Alera’)- Hard to explain how cool and badass this guy is, one of the greatest swordsmen I have read about. The Hulk and Captain America rolled into one.

    3. Arya Stark (from A Song of Ice and Fire)- Vicious, wild and bathed in blood. Training to be a talented assassin.

    4. Molly Carpenter (from the Dresden Files)- a great compliment to the others on this list. Not expert on combat magic forces Molly to do things differently, her skill set reminds me of the Vision (do not know if Vision is in the Avengers as I have not seen it yet), plus being Dresden’s apprentice gives her experience in handling difficult situations.

    5. Raif Severance (from the ‘Sword of Shadows’ series by JV Jones) this teams Hawkeye, capable of ‘Heart Killing’ with an arrow or blade. A survivor and former clansman who can exist in harsh conditions where his team mates could not.

There is my list, dissect as you will.

You would let Robert Downey Jr. play Kvothe honestly I would have thought Gerald Butler just because of his masterful performance in Gladiator and Law Abiding Citizen.

    I honestly don’t think a movie would do your book justice. Hell even a tv series wouldn’t cut it…………………. I’m feeling rpg. . . . . . .

    Attack –> Adem Artes
    Magic –> LOL!
    Summon –> Wind
Item –> Lute –> make talents

FF15 : Name of the Wind
Square is in dire need of an amazing story for their next rpg, and I can dream can’t I?

    1. Kvothe and Bast- like he needs a reason …it’s for the greater good.

    2. Fitz chivalry Farseer + Night eyes, – someone who can communicate telepathically, help heal wounds, and fights with a friggen battle axe while his wolf hamstrings opponents from behind! common!

    3. Vin Venture and Sazed – first regional lady bad-ass and fellow thief and having a Saze along because well I just need that cheery gotta have hope Sazed.

    4. Locke Lamora + Jean – you gotta have those guys that just know how the villains think plus Jean is amazing. but his talk of poetry would lead to blows between him and kvothe. also Kvothe’s self pity would piss Jean off.

5.Kylar Stern Viridiana Sovari one an immortal bad ass assassin that kills at the sight of evil. the other a sexy bad ass red haired lady assassin. locke would be useless around her but she servies as one hell of a distraction and overall can kill while their guards are down.

    6. Sam and Dean Winchester – Sam, Kvothe and Fitzs would get along swimmingly as they would be doing so much time studding over books. dean would probably lose a lot of money playing cards with locke…he might also have a few awkward moments with bast…

    7. Sherlock Holmes+John Watson – Sherlock because he puts everything together but would rub everyone the wrong way…specially kvothe . but they would bond over music . John, Jean, Sam, and fits would be amazing to see around each other as they would glue this team together better then any binding runes! I also have a feeling Vin,Dean and night eyes would get along great. but locke, kvothe, and Sherlock ugh the trouble I see them causing is paramount and funny. and gods damned clever.

I wanna throw in Legolos for flavor but I think him and bast might gripe about certain things

the villain? it would have to be someone going around and changing books. as books hold so much hope it would seek to throw humanity into despair. – Aristide Pierre
