A rose by any other name….

So I just read all the comments on the last blog. All of them. Over a thousand comments. It turns out that doing such a thing takes slightly more than three hours.

The good news is that my faith in the cleverness of my readership was definitely justified. Y’all came up with some really good names.

I’m going to share some of them with you here, partly because they deserve attention, and partly because I just spent three hours reading them, so you’re going to share this experience with me whether you want to or not….

Some of my favorites. Clear and Clever.

  • Novelty
  • Storytellers
  • Authority
  • Musings

Strong second-stringers:

  • Drafted
  • Fireside
  • Fabula Rasa
  • Penultimate (We could do a cool logo with this.)

Superlatives:

  • The Craft
  • The Literal Truth
  • The Story Board

Those are my front runners right now. (I’ve gotta start thinking about some sort of logo, too…. Anyone out there good at graphic design?)

A lot of the other names would have been perfect… if I wanted to name a show about writing after my beard. (Though “Dr. Beard’s Sing-Along Vlog” did make me laugh a bit.)

My favorite baffling name: Sagajuice.

My favorite self-deprecating one: Prosers.

Others were clever and cool, but just wouldn’t work for one reason or another. For example, “Fabletop” was a great suggestion, but I don’t want to bite on Wheaton’s style.

Some were clever, but too focused on my books:

  • Unlikely Maths
  • Not Writing Like a Stupid Jackass.
  • Sympathetic Words

Too suggestive:

  • Full Frontal Novelty

Too referential/punny:

  • Breaking Bard
  • Tome Raider
  • New Inklings
  • Browncoats

Too foreign:

  • Hwæt! (I do like this one)
  • In Media Res
  • Literati

Too misleading in their implication:

  • Epic
  • Meta
  • Mythic
  • Re: Writing

There were many good ones in there, but these are the ones that caught my eye or made me chuckle enough to jot them down.

I’ve got some good options now, but they’re all blurring together for me at this unseasonable hour of night.

I’m hoping the choice will be clearer to me tomorrow, after I’ve had some sleep.

Sweet dreams, everyone…

pat

Right now i am very happy that we two seem to have the same mind set^^, thats cool, since i believed from the start that we could get along really well should we ever meet. same interests, same humor, and now the Muses.

Well it sounds a bit like: “Hold my pipe dear sir and give me those volumes about the Wittiness of writing” .
You’d need to get a fireplace and a really comfy armchair.
I’m not against a certain elegancy but this ons is meh. Too blunt.

I’m all into the wordsmith thing, though. Would give a great logo, too.

I think “A musing” is 10 times better than “Musings” but probably won’t fit the direction he’s trying to go here. Awesome suggestion, though. :D

Musing is one of those words like ‘pondering.’ Somehow it always feels like something you do when you don’t know what to say or how to express what you’re thinking. Since this is going to be a vlog-ish panel DISCUSSION, to call it something that implies being absorbed in thought just doesn’t fit at all. -_-

Since it’s your show I’m going to watch it and love it no matter what it’s called.

I do think it’s strange to give something akin to panel-discussion a name that implies being absorbed in thought, though. Clever, but ill-fitting.

Novelty is grand. Novel Tea even better.

      I’d recommend “Prologue.”

It’s simple. Does some strong, clever things with language. Pro- and -logue (simultaneously, the words before, and a professional speaking). Naturally allows you to discuss the story-before-the-story.

Seconded. That’s a bad ass name. “Musings” is good but a little weaker. “Authority” is good but a little too overbearing.

“Storytellers”, containing an “-er” indicating an agent of storytelling, is one step removed from storytelling itself and therefore really not so good. In my line of work, the world of OOP, names are important as they tell you a great deal about an Object and about the mind of the person who designed it. Trust me, avoid the “-er”‘s.

This is a good name but I dont like it for one reason –

Jim Henson named a show he did Storytellers

I watched it on Netflix. It’s probably nothing really in connection with what Pat is doing, but I think he should have an original name to his show.

I immediately loved Novelty, I thought that was very clever but then I tried really imagining it as the Name… and it I don’t think it works. You put in an end tag. Let’s see if I can put one in with out its being translated: First . Otherwise it doesn’t know where to end it.

I wasn’t SO keen on the front runners – they are clever and quick, but all sound kind of generic out of context, to my ear. But it’s not my show. Out of context, Fabula Rasa seems like the only one that would be immediately mapped to this show, in that it wouldn’t have other meanings getting in the way. Actually, I like Story Board a lot too.

Otherwise, some variable of that term stands out; The Wordsmith’s Anvil? Hell, I dunno, it’s 5 AM and I’m still awake. If I keep brainstorming, anything that follows will likely end up as vocal diarrhea.

      • Posted July 27, 2012 at 12:33 PM | Permalink

I just found out that Nate’s moving this weekend. He might still be able to help, but I’m not sure he’ll have the time….

Plus logo design is different than illustration. Good logos are really hard to come up with. I wouldn’t be surprised if we went through several before we landed on a permanent one…

        • Posted July 27, 2012 at 1:22 PM | Permalink

That would explain it, then. Moving is a bitch. Wait, can I say that here? hrm. *goes back and edits*

          Anywho.

You COULD have an illustrated logo by Nate. It would suit the rest of your image with The Tinker’s Packs and the things he’s done for you for Facebook and all over the website. And The Guild’s logo is an illustration, too. So there’s that.

In any event, I wasn’t joking before. I’d be happy to help brainstorming and with working up some ideas for the various names. I am fairly certain that my name links back to my website where I post things when I remember to post them, but I’d be happy to gather up other work.

Anywho – I guess thats a good excuse…but I do really enjoy his artwork, always looks so sleek.

It would be cool to see a few of your logo choices when you get to that point…although that might lead to another 1000 comments.

I have to admit I like “The Story Board” best. Obviously, a story board is what movie makers use to plot out their stories, so the reference to story telling is clear. However, it could also be interpreted as as board of members, the board of story tellers, the story board. I like the way you can play with its meaning.

As the Fabula Rasa suggester, I have to say that Novelty is much better and cleverer and also was first in the gate. Though I understand you said that you’d be talking about all sorts of stories, not just novels.

Musings is a little too introspective… Authority a little too forceful.

For some reason I really like Penultimate. It has a presence to it that would be a good foil for your beard, sir.

I like the sound of Novelty, although The Literal Truth is probably my personal favourite; it just sounds more show-y! It helps to say it out loud a few times as Musings looks good on paper (or on a computer screen if you want to get all technical) but sounds kind of stilted when spoken conversationally.

But hey, I’ll be tuning in no matter what the name!

Novelty and Authority don’t have a lot of zing. (Welcome to Authority with Pat Rothfuss.) Plus you said you didn’t want to cover just novels. The title needs to be quirky like you and not to academic.

Penultimate it’s nice and could be spelled, Pen Ultimate to avoid copyright issues.

Out of the ones that are up there I like Novelty.

    But wasn’t “Storytellers” “Storytailors“??

Or were their both? If there were, I vote for Storytailors, because this will be a show about the craft of storytelling, correct? So it’s not just about telling various stories, but how to make them–tailor them if you will.

So my super vote goes to Storytailors, but if that doesn’t go, then Novelty.

But I really really love Storytailors on so many levels.

I feel it’s perfect. The others have pizazz and are fun, but this one seems to fit.

To quote this really awesome other I’ve read:

Hey Pat, I noticed you asked about logos. I make logos professionally for a living, and have won a few national awards for them. I’ve even got a few published in nice big coffee table books like the “Letterhead and Logo Design” series from Rockport. I’d be honored beyond words to lovingly craft a logo/brand package for your show, and, of course, I’d do it gratis. I work very quickly, and can generate a large selection of different ideas after doing some discovery questions with you about the personality of the show. You can see some examples of my work at the following link: http://joesportfolio.net/?page_id=58

I’ve done many more logos than I can show on my site (recently redoing all 270+ niche site logos for hayneedle.com). If you want more examples of my work, I’d be happy to send them along. Just let me know. All my contact info, including phone and email, are available on my website: joesportfolio.net

    Thanks for all you do.

These just seem so plain, so vanilla, and which conflicts with the beautifully unique names in your books. But who am I kidding, you’re an incredible author who has written two amazing books which have a concentric point of naming within them so what do I know? My vote is for “Storyboard.”

Similar to “The Story Board,” it has so much more meaning in, I think, a great way–storyboards being used by directors, creators, etc for over 80 years to visualize the story they want to tell. (It may, however, have too much bias toward movies.)

I like “Novelty” and “Musings” as well, though they don’t exactly give a definition of what the show will be about. If C.S. Lewis wouldn’t object, you could always tip your hat to his excellent essay and call it “On Stories.”

I can’t wait to watch the show, whate’er name it hath!

I am wondering why you can’t have one main name for the show then have a separate name each week for the chapter or episode. This way you would be able to use a lot of the suggestions including several of the very funny ones.

On another note separate from the name of the show, would this be closed captioned? I am deaf and cannot hear. I miss all the good stuff because of it…

  77. Posted July 27, 2012 at 10:58 PM | Permalink

I think the best is “Musings” don’t know exactly why. I think it’s a funny word and somehow it reminds me of cheese and alternate dimensions, and then more cheese…

And allow me to suggest that the first episode should be about the “writer’s den” (I really don’t know what I’m writing because I’m spanish xD). And the reason for that is… I don’t know, I think it’s interesting to know how/where other writers work. I myself need to be in some place dark with some cereal and my bass (although I don’t use it to write) and two 2D10 (I know it’s stupid but I like to think that’s intelligent… stupelligent…). Oh and also background music (very low) like secret garden or something similar.

I just want tomake clear that I’m crazy. Thanks for reading and cheese for everyone.

So – went ahead and watched a bunch of shit on Geek and Sundry this weekend since I hadnt really taken much time to check it out yet.

After watching all that I liked Felicia’s “The Flog” best. Almost every episode was hilarious. The only ones I didnt care much for were the Con episodes, but thats mostly because I like the videos that center on her doing some “Skill Set” – aside from that – the intro is a winner. :)

Anyway – this led to me thinking the best name for your show would be Fireside. (At least of the posted choices)

Seemed like it would fit in best with the other shows at least in my opinion.

Which leads to my next question of are you going to design a whole intro to your show w/ music and all similar to what some of the other shows have?
