Coolness….

So I’m up in the north woods of Wisconsin right now. One of the few places on earth without cell phone coverage or easy wifi access.

I was hoping to post up a different blog today containing some cool news, but due to the fact that I’m working on a netbook and using using borrowed wifi right now, I think I’m going to have to postpone that until Monday.

Instead, today I’m going to do two things:

1. Let y’all know that we have finally settled on a venue for my upcoming Reading and Signing in Chicago.

August 30, 2012 at 7PM
Reading, Q&A, and Signing
The BookMarket Bookstore
2651 Navy Blvd.
Glen Town Center, Glenview, Il 60026
Facebook Event

And before you start to quibble, I know that Glenview isn’t *technically* Chicago. But it’s pretty much Chicago.

Most importantly, it’s got enough space to comfortably hold everyone that might show up to the event. It’s no good me doing a reading and Q&A if half the people that show up have to stand out in the parking lot because the store can’t hold everyone…

So…. yeah. I’ll be there. You should be there too. I might read a new story nobody has ever heard before….

2. Here’s something awesome that a friend made me recently. I just had to share it.

(Click to Embiggen.)

How cool is that?

I have awesome friends….

Y’know. Over the years, a lot of people have given me a lot of cool stuff. Would y’all be interested in seeing it if I posted pictures up here on the blog? It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for some time….

If nothing else, posting pics of those things might help tide y’all over until I can finish wrangling the results of the photo contest. (Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about that.)

What do you think?

I would be interested in seeing cool stuff that people gave you! It would be similar to pinterest but with a beard, if you know what I mean! *winkie face*

(for more information on the potential joke just posted please see “The Beards – If your dad doesn’t have a beard…” song on Youtube.)

I love you, Pat, but having grown up in Northbrook just next to Glenview, and having lived IN Chicago for years I can unequivocally state that Glenview is NOT Chicago. Especially for people who live in the city and don’t own cars.

    • Posted August 24, 2012 at 3:22 PM | Permalink

I won’t be having a car in Chicago either. So, stretching my problem solving powers to their absolute limit, I’ve decided to take a cab. If I lived in Chicago, I might, alternately, bum a ride with a friend.

Generally speaking, I view it like this. I’ve taken the time to set up the event. I’ve taken the time to find a venue big enough to hold everyone, that is also willing to host the event. On top of that, I’m driving about 5 hours to get there.

If, by comparison, you have to travel 20 minutes to get there, it’s hard for me to feel like I’ve really done you some great wrong. It’s not like I can schedule these things so they’re right across the street for *everyone.*

I do apologize for the bitchiness I threw at you. I was having a bad moment, saw your blog and started typing before I thought.

There is, in fact, a Metra line that runs right past the Glenn so for any fans living in the city who don’t own cars you have actually picked a location that is not only large enough to hold us all but very close to a mass-transit system. It only further shows how cool you are and how very stupid I was for posting that comment.

No worries. We all have our tense moments. I was a little stressed out after posting this, which is why I snarked back at you.

I’ve been regretting my response for the last hour or so. I just logged back on specifically to come here and erase the post if nobody had seen it, or apologize if folks had replied.

So yeah. Sorry for my ungracious snark.

Can I just say that this is one of the most refreshing things I’ve seem on the internet in a long time. Two people having a civilised disagreement and apologising after clearing up the situation. No descent into name calling or assumption the other must be a moron or a Nazi. Thank you both for proving the Internet can be civilised. :-)

If you are anywhere else in the Northern Illinois area, Glenview is close enough to be part of the Chicagotropolis.

Personally I am thrilled, too often book signings and events are in the city, and for those of us not in the city or close suburbs, it makes them harder to get to.

Racine, WI has a Barnes & Noble not far from I-94.I know what you’re thinking, don’t most people get shot in Racine? Well yes they do, but that’s why reading is so much more rewarding when you finish a book without getting shot! If you wanted to stop by and yell at us and tell us how terrible of a job we’re doing, feel free to do just that! Coffee is on me! And cookies if you want. Or muffins if you’re more a muffin man.

Speaking of coolness, (well surely this comes under sheer awesomeness but I need a segue to be able to go off topic) I’ve had a thought, one that I just can’t get out of my head. You, Wil Wheaton, Amber Benson and Felicia Day on an episode of Tabletop. Is this level of epicness be possible?

The cool things that folks send you are exactly that: cool! It would be wonderful to see more on the site!

By the by, should we take this particular cool thing as confirmation that the Four Corners world is actually spherical? I was at the Seattle release of WMF and you suggested that it might not be… Just curious…

  34. Posted August 25, 2012 at 10:55 PM | Permalink

Very cool. The word urine somewhere south of COMMONWEALTH really stands out to me. Funny how the potty words grab our attention huh?

On a side note, are you endorsing this spherical view of your world? I’ve heard you say before that you were purposefully vague about the planetary structure since you hadn’t decided all the details (magnetic polarity being one of them). Just curious.

Though your blog states that you will be in Glenview at 7:00p.m. tomorrow, the Chicon website says you will be at the Hyatt Regency at 4:30 p.m. (http://www.chicon.org/program/publicface.php?Type=ListPanelDetail&ID=1389) Are you planning on attending both events? Did one event get cancelled? Or am I to believe that you will be at both locations at the same time?
