Link Salad: Anecdote, Academia, and Alchemy….

Things are really busy over here at Elodin Enterprises.

(Slogan: “Elodin Enterprises – We make tomorrow’s mistakes possible today!”)

We’re gearing up for Worldbuilders, gathering donations, and trying to get the word out about the calendar.

Speaking of which, N. K. Jemisin showed off her pin-up yesterday over on her blog. It’s one of my favorite illustrations from the calendar.

In the blog she also talks about the creative back-and-forth that went into developing the picture. It was cool for me to see another author’s mental process in relation to one of her characters….

In other news….

  • Someone sent me a link to a video featuring a kid they thought was a dead ringer for young Kvothe:

And I have to say, they’re not entirely wrong.

  • Lastly, if you’re curious, I’ll point out that there are a few new images from the calendar over on the Tinker’s Packs, if you’d like to wander over and check them out.

Later everyone,

pat

The first time I saw that kid in that commercial my thought was “Wow, they really need to film NOTW soon, and start teaching that kid how to play the lute…”

That class that uses NOTW as a core text uses GRRM’s Game of Thrones as well. Out of curiosity, have you STILL not read that series? If not, get on that. Seriously. I bet he’s read yours!

Dude?? What’s wrong with you? GRRM’s Song of Ice and Fire isn’t a book series, it’s a relationship. Those books are at least as long as his and there are more of them! Don’t encourage him to read them until AFTER he finishes his trilogy. At which point, he can do whatever he wants with his time. Right now, his ass is on the clock! lol

P.S. Hey Pat, if you need proofreaders I am really great and I can keep secrets. Mostly…

Reading it now, and its good.

Now only 10 years til we get to read the ending.

I’m glad you’re going Trilogy Pat…Seven books is really just too much without some kind of conclusion. I actually like KKC better because it doesnt spend so much time with what I consider “filler”

I love ASOIAF but a lot could have been edited out I think…sometimes all I can think is “Get to the Freakin Point Already”

          For crissake (spoiler alert)

Ned was dieing for seriously half of GOT and I almost quit reading because Joff took so long. I thought it was actually agonizing.

Though it would be badass if KKC was picked up by HBO they’re doing a pretty nice job on GRRM’s stuff. I’m actually pretty impressed with it and I hate Book to Cinemas.

I’m glad to hear you’ve read it, then.

When you mentioned you hadn’t read it, (sometime around the “lists of fantasy books” post I think) I was surprised since it’s such a wildly popular series.

Now of course, I’m curious to know how you felt about it, and whether you felt it lived up to its hype, etc. (I’m of the opinion that the first three books are great. The two most recent, not so much.)

You know, it didn’t occur to me to read NOTW out loud. But I had my husband read it, and also let my 10 year old read it, which she’s now done several times (really.). A couple of weeks ago I came upon her reading it to our 9 year old. I was a little worried about the circumstances of Kvothe’s split from the troupe, but they both seem to take it in stride.

I got a lot of reading it aloud actually. You should give it a shot.

I read it to my boyfriend and roomies (since they arent really readers) and they keep asking for the next one. LOL.

Guess I’ll have some company in line for Book 3 when it comes out. Tee hee.

I love the calender, I just wondered what the chances were of an equivalent one featuring male literary pin-ups. I feel that would accessorise my study nicely.

    Pat,

You rock my socks off. More pics!! Can’t wait to check em out. Gotta say that when I check your blog I am a little more sly nowadays (since the first posting of the pretty ladies in fairytales). I probably shouldn’t check your blog at all (i.e. misuse time at work) but it’s so refreshing to hear from the duke of badassity.

That’s about it. You rock, thanks for not putting the pics up on the front of the blog (even if it wasn’t intentional) it doesn’t do to be looking at ladies while at work :-), and this blog is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Can’t wait to read the next postacular post.

Wowzas. If I saw that guy performing, I would find my way to him afterwords, offer to buy him a drink and then proceed to gush about how much I love his work. The conversation would inevitably turn awkward when I mention I’m talking about his books, not his music, and he has to explain to me that he has no idea what The Name of the Wind is.

Speaking of book 3, i’m caught between guilt and satisfaction at recommending the series. I’ve turned quite a few people onto the series, and part of me is delighted that others I know share in my pain of waiting for the eventual release of book 3, while the other part feels responsible for imparting the pain of impatience. However, I welcome it. Knowing that the longer we wait, the greater the eventual conclusion will be makes it worthwhile.

I think that Pat (of course) said it best in NOTW, “When you wait a few span or a month to hear a finished song, the anticipation adds savor. But after a year excitement begins to sour. By now, a year and a half had passes and folk were almost mad with curiosity.”

I’ve never thought of this sentence as very significant. Although in retrospect, I suppose it could be considered at least partially prophetic.

I dream of eventually teaching a class and using your books. I imagine it along the lines of a creative writing class, but changing it to an oral creative writing class. The end goal of the semester would be to have created an original story, but have it written in a way that its purpose is to be told out loud and passed from person to person that way. I believe there is a major difference in the way you write a story, and the way you tell a story. That is one of the themes in the books that fascinates me, the way stories are passed around. Sure there are written books, but storytelling in and of itself is an entertainment. Also the effect oral story telling has on the shape of the story/the history/what gets preserved and what doesn’t (Kvothe the Arcane vs. Kvothe the boy who lights magnesium shavings on fire).

Pat, this is off-topic, but if you’re a fan of the original Star Trek, then you should check this out. I got linked to it on Twitter. It’s a poster of all the characters in Star Trek put together and it’s F’n awesome! The guy also has posters of 70s TV heroes and other stuff.

    Hi Pat,

I’m curious if there’s any difference between the regular calendar and the limited edition one other than the artist’s signature? I’m really on the fence with ordering it and thought I’d ask before I chose which one.

    Dear Pat,
I am impressed with your support of Heifer International. I recently needed a birthday gift for someone, so I went on the site to “give” some honeybees. When I checked the matching gifts, I saw your name along with Worldbuilders. Yay! One of my newly discovered, favorite authors supports Heifer.org! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
