Preview, Review, Redo

Still recovering from the fundraiser and my recent trip to LA. Most of my time is spent catching up on sleep, writing, and spending time with my boy…

Even so, I’ve got some stuff I ought to share. Three things, actually. Because… well… y’know. Three.

  • First off…

…here’s a Kickstarter thing I’m involved with for next year. A cool, fantasy-themed photography calendar.

What they can’t mention on Kickstarter is that the proceeds from the project will go to support charity.

What charity, you ask? Why Worldbuilders, of course. And another favorite of mine, First Book.

But Kickstarter won’t let you discuss charity stuff on their site. So Lauren, the photographer spearheading the project, goes into it in more detail over here.

  • Secondarily…

Anyone interested in the classics might want to take a look at my goodreads review of Go, Dog, Go!

Here’s a teaser for those of you disinclined to click a link….

I respect what the author is attempting to do here, thematically. Eastman is a philosopher at heart, examining how things relate to one another. Are we a green dog or a yellow one? Is it day or night? These are big questions, and they need to be asked….

You can read the whole thing over on goodreads. Or, if you’re really trying to avoid doing any work today, you can browse through all my reviews on there…

  • Thirdly and lastly….

For those of you who have not yet seen the pictures, last week at Confusion I did a thing with some other authors.

I will speak no more of it, merely provide a link.

Be careful, once you’ve seen it, you can’t un-see it.

If you happen to be the odd sort of person who *wants* to see something like that, perhaps even multiple times, you can bid on a rare, multiple-autographed copy of it over here.

Proceeds, as always, go to charity.

This is particularly amusing to me, Pat, because my mom and I were discussing things like themes in literature, and I brought up your opinion of them (how, when English teachers have students write papers about themes in books, it’s generally nonsense).

On a related note, your manly and sexy pose is both manly and sexy. Also kissy and stuff.

I love how the guy with the sunglasses (Stross?) has duplicated the chest-wrap-thing so well.

Pat, will you be doing the pinup calendar for WB next year or will the photography calendar be the official calendar of WB 2013?

PS. would love to see more sendup’s (sp) of book & comic cover art. Hmmm maybe an idea for the official calendar of WB 2014? ;)

    Hi Pat,

Just an FYI. Edward Norton (the actor) helped fund a site called CrowdRise dot com that is basically Kickstarter for charity fundraising. The Beyond Words group may wish to augment their fundraising campaign by starting one at CrowdRise. The only icky part is Crowdrise is a for-profit venture, but so is Kickstarter.

    Calendrical thoughts….
Well, we know Lee is against doing guys in his version of the calendar, and I appreciate the artistic integrity he’s trying to follow, being true to the source.
So maybe if Lee is still doing a pinup calendar you may need to find someone to do a different “beefcake” calendar for the more feminine of your followers. If you want to still be thematic, maybe go for a homage to harlequin romance cover art or something. A clever person could have a lot of fun working within that arena.

There should be a constitutional amendment requiring you and Scalzi to remain fully clothed at all times.

If I might quote the Colonel, “the horror…”

Why are none of the calendar “reward” options an actual copy of the calendar itself, instead of pc wallpaper of all the shots? Is the calendar itself being saved for purchasing through Worldbuilders?

Wow – First Book looks amazing. I’m from a very small, rural, and low income community, now I’m stoked to show this to the educators I know around here. Maybe get the school library and class libraries fixed up. They pretty much just get the old books from the County.
I haven’t had a full chance to look at everything on there, do you by chance know if a County Library system would be able to get involved with First Book? Our library is so underfunded here it’s difficult to get new stuff in. All our purchases last year were done by donation. Which is never much in a low income community. (But none the less appreciated, since we always know it’s from the heart)

    Anyway – cool stuff man.

And yah…You can’t unsee that picture. It’s burned into my mind for eternity. Totally wasn’t expecting that.

Though it did make me LOL (Literally)

    Hey Pat,

Was it you that talked about a kick starter project where they broke books down and made a game out of reading? I thought that was a pretty cool idea and was wondering what ever came of that. Assuming you were the one who mentioned it.

I’m not amazed that you would drop trou for charity. I am incredulous that you would duck face for anything.

Never thought I would see a Stross-Fuss photo! Maybe the Mayans were right? Cats and dogs living together?

Never heard/seen you mention Stross on the blog, and his blog involves almost as much befuddling mind-challenging complexia as most of his fiction – but I would greatly appreciate your impression of him and or his works if you’ve read them.

If you haven’t, and you enjoy a good mind-punch, read Accelerando – (freely available under creative commons etc) – if you are at all into sci-fi or tech-sci or if the phrase ‘highly evolved virtualized lobster intelligence’ does anything for you… Just as you would be either 1 or 1A on my fantasy author list, he’d be fighting for that spot in the techie/spacie stepbrother genre…..

full of win – thanks for that

I’m new to donating to Worldbuilders, so this may be a weird question, but will {at announce the winners of the lottery items (or at least announced that someone has one, if the names aren’t made public)? I can’t help being curious.

This is my first post on this blog, though I read it all the time.

I had to register and comment, because I read this book to my 3 year old. He loves this book. Something about dogs driving cars and having conversations about hats and having a party on top of a tree really sparks his interest. And anything that sparks an interest in reading at any age is a fantastic thing.

I love it that it’s the most ostentatious hat that wins the approval of the other dog….
