PAX, D&D Podcasts, and Unexpected Coolness

So in just a couple days, I’m going to be heading out to PAX to play as a swashbuckling rogue named Viari in their D&D Campaign.

pat(That’s Me.)

Mike, Jerry, Scott and I got together a couple months back and did our initial adventure, which are available as podcasts over here….

Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7

While I’m out at PAX, we’ll be playing again, live onstage.

I’ll be doing a few other things at the convention too. Here’s the schedule for my official events.

Friday August 30

11:30-12:30 – Does Story Matter in Video Games? – Kraken Theatre
3:30-4:30 – An Afternoon with Pat Rothfuss – The Pegasus Theatre

Saturday August 31

3:30-6:00 Acquisitions, Inc. – Main Theatre

I’ll be doing other stuff around the convention too. Checking out games and lurking around the Geek Chic booth at Skybridge 3.

And while I’m in Seattle, I’ll be doing TWO events outside of PAX.

Thursday August 29

7 pm Reading at University Bookstore
4326 University Way NE  Seattle, WA98105
Facebook Event

This event is going to be extra awesome because Terry Brooks, Peter Orullian, and Shawn Speakman will all be there to sign copies of Unfettered, which will be available for sale.

A very important note: Apparently there’s some sportsball game going on the day of this signing.   This means, according to Shawn, that  traffic getting to the event will be AWFUL.  Be sure to account for that if you’re traveling.

Friday August 30

7 pm Reading at Barnes and Noble Pacific Place
600 Pine Street Suite 107
Seattle, WA 98101
Facebook Event

I set up this signing for those of you who will be in town for PAX, as it’s right next door to the convention. Literally a block or so away.

Because, you see, I’m going to be at the convention, but my books won’t.

And I don’t want to have this conversation 200 times:

Person: Hey, are you Pat Rothfuss?

Me: Yup.

Person: Cool. I didn’t know you were going to be here!

Me: Yeah. I’m playing D&D with Acquisitions Incorporated.

Person: [Looks around.] Where can I get one of your books?

Me: Sorry. No bookdealers here. It’s a gaming convention.

Person: Are you doing a booksigning?

Me: Fraid not. I’m on a couple panels….

Person: Damn. I really wanted to get a signed copy of your book for my sister. She’d lose it….

Me: Sorry….

[And then we just look at each other awkwardly.]

So, in an effort to avoid having this conversation roughly a billion times at the convention, we called Barnes and Noble to see if they could have books available for people, and hopefully schedule an event.

And you know what? They made us a *much* cooler offer than that.

  • The Coolness.

When we called B&N to see if they’d be willing to carry a bunch of my books for folks who want them, they offered to do it AND do a Book Fair, meaning that if people show up and buy my book using our Bookfair code (11162161) a percentage of the sales will be given to Worldbuilders.

But that’s not all…

It turns out that *any* book people buy with the Bookfair code (11162161) will send some extra money to Worldbuilders.

But that’s not all, either…

This code is good at all Barnes and Noble stores between now and September 2nd. Any book you buy, at any B&N helps Worldbuilders.

AND it works on their online store too. In fact, it works longer. You can you use the code 11162161 on their website through September 7th.

I have to say, this is really cool of them. And I think we should make the most of it.

So let’s say you’ve never read any Terry Pratchett, but you’ve heard he’s good. You could jump in at Guards Guards, which is one of the best entry points, in my opinion.

Or maybe you read my great gushy review of Gaiman’s Ocean at the End of the Lane, but you haven’t picked it up yet.

Now would be the perfect time for that.

Or it could be you didn’t realize that the sequel to Libriomancer just came out a couple weeks back. You could grab that too.

Or buy a copy of Carniepunk, if you weren’t able to get one of the signed copies we put up in our store.

Or you could pre-order a copy of Stonecast, which means Worldbuilders would get money from the author (Anton Strout), the publisher (Penguin), AND Barnes and Noble.

It’s like a charity hat-trick.

Here’s a printable voucher if you’re planning on bringing one in to a store.

Look forward to seeing some of you out in Seattle.

Me, I’m off to buy some books….

pat

As in, what percentage of the sales will go to Worldbuilders if I use the coupon #?

I worked at Barnes & Noble for over six years, so I’m fairly familiar with the bookfair process they’re using to donate money to Worldbuilders. It should be somewhere between 5% to 10% of your purchase that will be donated. I believe it varies a bit between states, hence the leeway.

According to our paperwork, it starts at 10%, then goes up the more people spend.

If people buy more than 10K of books, we make 20%. Which is pretty awesome….

From my experience working at B&N, there is not a way for you to use the Bookfair code while purchasing books DIRECTLY from your Nook.

HOWEVER, if you actually go to a B&N store, there is a way for a bookseller to ring you up for ebooks and you would pay for them at the register (which would allow you to give them the Bookfair code).

But the easiest way would be for you to go to B&N’s website, make sure you’re logged in to the account associated with your Nook, and add as many ebook titles to your cart as you would like. While checking out online, there will be a place you can enter the Bookfair code.

Mashort16 is correct. you cannot use the code directly from your nook.

However, there is another way to do this without going to a store in person: Just call them!

Tell them you want to buy a nook book but want to pay over the phone so you can use a Bookfair code.

Each ebook has a specific ISBN different from the hard copy (of course). For example the Name of the Wind ebook is 9781101147160

So make sure they understand this purchase is for an ebook.

You will also need an email where the link for the book will be sent and of course a credit card.

@mashort16: How do we add Nook eBooks to the cart? At least for me, Nook eBooks have a “Buy Now” button, that then gives a “Confirm Order” pop-up message. It does not go through the normal shopping cart & checkout process, and I can’t see any option to enter a Bookfair code.

    Possible typo

“Person: Damn. I really wanted to get a signed copy of your book for my sister. She’d lose it….”

Perhaps it was “love it”. Or maybe she would “lose it” and be very excited and lose all sense of reality…or it could be that she likes to lose signed books…

    Have a great time!

I am confused by this statement: “So, in an effort to avoid having this conversation roughly a billion times at the convention, Barnes and Noble to see if they could have books available for people, and hopefully schedule an event.”

Should there be another phrase right before Barnes and Noble, like “I contacted” or something?

I’m trying to use the code but the site comes back with, “the coupon code you entered is invalid. Please check the code on your coupon and re-enter it.” I’ve check the code (11162161) several times. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

    • MattODwyer
      Posted August 28, 2013 at 12:21 AM | Permalink

I made the mistake of trying to enter the code as a “coupon code.” When purchasing from the online store, select “change” on your payment method. Scroll down to a little box that says “check this box if this is a bookfair order.” After that, a new box should appear and you enter the code there.

Apparently ebooks aren’t eligible. Dammit. At least I got to use the code in the story when I bought my Nook.

The following products and services are not eligible for inclusion in online totals: Barnes & Noble Memberships, Gift Cards, Gift Certificates, Used & Out of Print Books, Textbooks, ebooks, digital hardware and accessories and other select product. NOOK and NOOK accessories are eligible items but not included in the online totals.

I did, however, also buy a physical book I *know* was covered which I’ve been waiting to buy for a while. (I spent ~a crazy amount of money on books, couldn’t afford more.)

B&N has a thing for employees called the 100 Club, where you attempt to sell 100 copies of your favorite book. Being an employee there and a huge Rothfuss fan, I finally started tracking the copies I put in people’s hands. In about five or six months, I sold around 70 copies. It was so amazing to have people come back to the store and tell me how much they loved NOTW. Usually, they would tell me about all of the other people they encouraged to read it as well. I like to think of it as a huge tree branching from person to person, spreading the awesomeness.

Sadly, I moved recently and am not working at B&N currently, so I didn’t get to finish selling my 100 copies. :(

Always happy to help a good cause that allows me to feed my addiction to books. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. I can offer no higher praise than that.

Now to just figure out what symbol to represent your books will go in this tattoo…may need to reread.

I’ve been thinking of getting that talent pipe symbol on the Eolian t-shirts they sell in the Tinkers Packs for a while now. It’s small, looks nice, represents something from the series I really enjoyed. Also considered just getting the phases of the moon.

What other novels are you involving in this tattoo?

I’ve also been wanting to get one that relates back to GRRM’s Valar Morghulis. I love that saying.

Still trying to figure out all of the symbols. Right now it’s a cluster of books near my wrist, and a broken chain (for UNFETTERED) comes out of one book and wraps around my arm up to my shoulder. Going to add symbols from different books or authors I love (Gaiman, Sanderson, Tolkien, Rothfuss) and then something to fill in the gaps.

    Hi Pat,
I was planning on stopping in at B&N this weekend, as I had a couple of 20% off coupons that expire on the September 1st. I went in to pick up “A Street Cat Named Bob”, but was happy to see that Pratchet and Baxter’s new novel, “The Long War” was out, so I grabbed that, too.
I happily presented the Bookfair voucher along with my coupons upon checkout. My thanks to you & B&N for making me feel good while buying some good books!

  27. Posted September 2, 2013 at 8:08 AM | Permalink

    Pat,
Love your books. I was in elementary education for the last ten years, so I didn’t pick up adult fiction again until about a year ago with Martin. When I bought your book on Amazon last spring, I thought that it was one of those “self-published, trying to get out into the market” kind of books, because I purchased it through a book-for-a-buck deal.
I nearly wept when I finished the first few chapters. My thought was, if this book can’t find a publisher, what chance will I ever have of getting my book published when I’m finished with it? It was just that good.
Then I googled you and breathed a sigh of relief. Obviously I’ve been teaching and read children’s/young adult books exclusively for way too long. I’ve added you to the list of authors whose craft I study. My husband and I marvel at your sheer genius for storytelling. You have swiftly become my favorite author.
That said, why “Guards, Guards”? Are the first few books worth skipping over?

    • Posted September 3, 2013 at 9:11 AM | Permalink

Pratchett has been writing for a long time, and the work has deepened. The first few books are fine, but Guards! Guards! is one of the first that shows the master’s touch.

It’s also the beginning of the story arc for Sam Vimes, one of the best-loved Pratchett protagonists.

The first few (Colour of Magic, Light Fantastic, Equal Rites) are mostly silly D&D inspired stories about wizards and barbarians. Guards, Guards is when he really starts with overarching story and very well put together character driven action.

Not to discredit the earlier stuff, but they’re a lot more all over the place than GG is.

On that note, I’m excited he’s got another Ankh-Morpork novel coming out soon!

Good to know. I normally have this very visceral response tugging me back when it comes to hopping ahead in series books, but it sounds like this is the series to do it with. Definitely looking for some good recommends. A great writer needs to be a better reader.

It’s so great to see so much support from this community for such a great organization. This is why I love coming to this blog. If not for the occasional updates, then for the amazing fans who make me giggle more often than not, and genuinely have hearts of gold!
I hope to see how well this particular fundraiser does! Keep us updated, pat!

Sitting in the Portland B&N right now, waiting for my girls to pick out what they want to purchase with their gift certificates. So glad we can help out WorldBuilders and celebrate belated birthdays!

Sorry I missed you in Seattle. I was planning to detour through Seattle on our way from Wisconsin to Portland, but we had to arrive on Saturday in order to catch the apartment manager. We spent 9 days, my two daughters and I, seeing Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone and Paul Wheaton’s permaculture farm in Montana.

I hope you come to Portland! Driving to Stevens Point is not likely at this point…

Between Kvothe and Viari I am starting to think you have a thing for red hair.

Seeing you speak, both at the panel and at Barnes and Nobles, was definitely the highlight of PAX 2013 for me.

The funny thing is my husband and I acquired signed books from both you and Sanderson this weekend. He did a stealth signing at our local bookstore and we had to rush there to grab a copy of something he left behind on our way to the airport.

    Hey Pat,

Any chance we can get an idea of how much money we generated when you get the numbers?

Hey, finally got a chance to watch the Acquisitions, inc event from PAX, and just wanted to post that I think you did an outstanding job. Kudos! Hopefully you get invited back in the future.
