Hey there everyone.
I know y’all are waiting for news. I’m mostly over my cold, the internet is working in my house again, and almost halfway caught up on my e-mail (which is pretty good for me.)
Here’s the problem, right now I’m not officially authorized (heh) to share everything I want to share with you.
As a result, I’m holding off on my news post until I can give you a big ton of sparkly details and lurid details all at once.
For the nonce, we have some other news, and a completely different shiny thing that’s showed up on my radar.
Other News:
I’m going to be down in Chicago for C2E2 next week.
Friday, April 25 to Sunday, April 27
South Building at McCormic Place
2233 South Martin L. King Drive
Chicago, IL 60616
Facebook Event
My schedule is relatively light, but it looks pretty awesome:
Friday, April 25:
3-4pm: Spotlight on Patrick Rothfuss, S403
4:15-6:15: After-panel Signing, Table 1
Saturday, April 26:
1:30-2:30pm: GEEK GEEK REVOLUTION game show, S403, with Mark Frost, Kevin Hearne, Seth Fishman and Lydia Kang, and moderated by John Scalzi.
I’ll be doing a signing at a local bookstore too, for those of you who aren’t big convention goers. The lovely folks at the Seminary Co-Op Bookstores set it up for me, and it’ll be hosted at the University of Chicago.
Monday, April 28, 6pm
International House at the University of Chicago
1414 E 59th St
Chicago, Illinois 60637
Facebook Event
Hope to see some of you down there. I don’t know when I’ll be back in that neck of the woods again.
Miscellaneous Coolness:
A while back, a fan named Glen tipped me off about something cool they submitted on the Lego website:
(You should click to embiggen this one)
If this becomes a thing, Glen is going to get a cut of the action for having the great idea and design. Even cooler, Glen has offered to give half of that cut to Worldbuilders.
Why doesn’t it specifically say they’re Edema Ruh from the Kingkiller world? Because Glen is smart. First, he didn’t want to step on my intellectual property, which I appreciate. Second, because Lego has fairly stringent standards regarding overall family-friendliness of their sets. So not only would licensing be a Huge Legal Thing. But my books have some content that would probably red flag the whole deal.
I’m no Joe Abercrombie or anything, but I’m still fairly gritty.
Guess who these handsome devils are? Yeah. You don’t have to guess too hard. I like how he made it so my Wizard’s Staff has a Knob on the End.
If you’d like this to be a thing, you can Vote Over Here.
And even if you don’t care much for voting, you should probably check out the website, anyway. Cool stuff.

I feel like I’m waiting for Christmas and I don’t know what day it is but isn’t the anticipation half fun of a present.
Yeah. It’ll probably just turn out to be socks anyway….
I think the bigger question is, what kind of socks? Ankle socks? Dress socks? Argyle socks? Wool? Polyester? Socks are not a matter to take lightly, you can tell a lot about a person by their socks (or lack there of).
Also, calling it now, the big reveal is Pat’s releasing his own clothing line. First item, socks knitted from his very own IncrediBeard.
Dude, socks are the best.
Don’t knock the socks! It isn’t a day of gifts without socks!
(In my household, they are generally given by pets.)
Wow. When I first read this, I thought you said socks are given AS pets. I totally wanted to be part of your household for a second, there.
Ha! And then the reality struck, and not so much. Although, several people have commented that who they die, they want to come back as a dog or horse in my house, because they are unreasonably well taken care of. The horse doesn’t have house access yet, although he does stick his head in the window.
But I still like your first impression better.
Please, oh please, oh please don’t let it be socks.
Unless they’re Darn Tough, because those are awesome.
“I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.” Harry stared. “One can never have enough socks,” said Dumbledore. “Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a pair. People will insist on giving me books.”
Possible release date teasers? Oh Rothfuss you sly dog.
Any estimation as to when you’ll be able to share your bag of goods?
I can’t wait to see you and Scalzi at C2E2. This will be my very first convention. Hopefully I can manage my time well enough so I don’t miss your panels. See you next week!
Lego never gets old. I’ll buy this for my nephew (yeah.. sure.. for him.. if I buy two, maybe…)
My nephew has a lot of toys. That live at my house. That he doesn’t actually know about. But they’re totally for him. Yup.
My, what a large lute he has! Is it true what they say about the size of a man’s lute?
Only if what they say about size of the Knob at the end of a Wizard’s staff is true too.
And that’s a HUGE knob. An embiggened knob, if you will. For the nonce. (I love Pat’s semi-archaic terms).
Thanks for sharing my project Pat and writing such works to inspire its creation.
Did it take long to design?
“Note: Lego Rothfuss is just displayed for fun and will not be included with the set.”
What a tease!
Glen said he’s not above including a “Romani Storyteller” Minifigure, so during the voting process, make sure you mention this would be a selling point.
And please vote! I really want one of these!
I sure hope the announcement is that you’ll be playing Manet… or Stanchion; I’m not picky.
I hope it’s a book release date or confirmation of a TV series! Don’t get me wrong I’m enjoying Game of Thrones but Kingkiller would kick it’s tushie
Goodluck getting the lego set made, it’s excellent! :)
I’m dreading the TV show thing. Why? Because GoT is a painful experience for me, I Might actually watch more if it weren’t for this overwhelming desire to commit suicide while it’s playing. I can’t believe I spent money on something that’s so awful… I seriously can’t remember the last time I simply Couldn’t watch something because it was so bad. At least I was able to make it through several of the books (before giving up because I got tired of NEVER seeing any indication that things would tie back together).
I know Pat has said that the New Regency writer for the TV show was/is a fan and “gets it”. But, the fear is there… I dropped pay TV years ago because the quality was deplorable and I’ve certainly not seen any evidence of this changing for the better. I hope the TV thing has to wait several years to start, at Least until Day 3 is published. And now looking at what Regency has put out, I’m even Less hopeful for something of any quality.
This has to be the one blemish in the sphere that is Rothfuss IMHO. He feels this way himself actually..

Oh I respect that’s the opinion of many, but I’ve been enjoying Game of Thrones and would love to see Kingkiller made into a show. I know TV rarely lives up to the book counterpart and I saw Pat’s post about his dislike for the hobbit films but, speaking as a dyslexic, TV lets me enjoy the story much faster than re-reading! and I’m sure a TV show would be a good way of promoting the books too so that can’t be a bad thing!
Oh wow…well, I had to vote on that.
Either way I’m totally going home and building one of those wagons!
“As a result, I’m holding off on my news post until I can give you a big ton of sparkly details and lurid details all at once.” (emphasis mine)
This just feeds the faint hope I’m holding out for some tasteful side-cock, somewhere in some future project of yours, Pat.
“For the nonce” – am confused why sex offenders would be addressed. An autocorrect error?
I think he was going for the “for the time being” use, though I didn’t know that nonce could also mean sex offenders.
That form is actually an acronym.
It would be correctly punctuated N.O.N.C.E.
Never really been a fan of Legos but that’s still pretty cool. And your freakin killing us Pat.
I personally would like a trickle of coolness to hold me over until the big coolness meal.
Photo contest results are fun!
Waiting patiently.
Love the Legos.
Smart move on Glen’s part. I submitted a LEGO Les Miserables barricade set, figuring that the licensing isn’t an issue because the book is public domain, but had my project rejected with nothing more than a blanket statement that they would not be “making any projects based on this property.” I’m assuming it was the prostitution that had them turn it down, but they won’t come right out and say that (I asked for clarification, but they never responded). They have repeatedly rejected Firefly-themed submissions, and I got the sense that it was thematic (prostitution again) rather than a licensing issue (they actually don’t deny submissions for licensed projects – if you get enough votes, they will sometimes clear the licensing, as they did for Back to the Future and Ghostbusters).
If you want to check out LEGO Les Mis, here’s what I worked up: http://jsherry.webs.com/legolesmiserables.htm
Then head over and vote for Glen’s project, since he gets official feedback at certain levels (1,000, 5,000, etc), and if he reaches 10,000 votes, I believe that automatically puts him in their quarterly review of choices to be evaluated.
Sarah’s pregnant again…??
I thought of this analogy and enjoyed it so much I thought I would share it.
Its like being lost on a sail boat in the middle of the ocean. At first we were eager to get home, but after a while we settled in. We did not expect to see anything but the vast expanse of blue, because that is all we had seen every day previously. So we did our best to continue on with some semblance of a life.
Occasionally we would see something cool: a strange fish, a whale, a meteor shower. Time passed and we slowly forgot what land was like. We knew not to ask others if they had seen anything important; if they had they would have told us.
Now someone has seen something; things have changed. What is it? Land? A ship? A mirage? No one knows. It’s out there on the horizon, a speck of something. Is that red or green? Monotony has been replaced with fervor, excitement. Hope has been sparked and fanned. But what happens if its just some drift wood. What happens if its just some debris. Lets hope for everyone’s sake that its not!
Btw, nice lego model.
