The Tinker’s Packs: Signed Books, a New Poster, and a Game With Bast

Okay. For those of you waiting for news. I have news about that news. Meta-news, if you will.

The news-about-news is that I’ll be able to post up what I want to show you at the end of the week. Friday or Saturday. That will be my next blog.

And just so nobody’s hopes and dreams are crushed. It’s not going to be an announcement about the release of The Doors of Stone. But it will be an announcement about a book.

Is that vague enough for you?

Since I’ve got to hold off on that news, here’s something completely different for today…

*     *     *

As many of you already know, we run an online store called The Tinker’s Packs where you can buy…. well… kind of a whole bunch of stuff: Foreign editions of a lot of different fantasy books, t-shirts, jewelry, and hard-to-find copies of my books.

(Just so you know, all the money we make in the store goes to Worldbuilders.)

Last year, we tried a little experiment. In October, we put some signed books from other authors up in the store. New books that had just hit the shelves. It was a new thing for us, and we weren’t sure people would be interested.

They sold out in about a couple of hours.

Then in November, we tried it again. More new books signed by the authors.

Those sold out in just a couple hours too.

So we’ve decided to make this a regular thing. We’ll put up 3-4 new signed books in the store every month. You get to find out about new books, people get to add some cool signed copies of the books to their libraries, and Worldbuilders makes some money.

Everybody wins.

The only weak link in this plan is the name. I’ve been struggling to find a cool one, if we’re going to make this a regular thing. The best we’ve been able to come up with so far is “Library Builders.”

If y’all could come up with a better name, I’d welcome it. We’ll take suggestions down in the comments. If someone knocks it out of the park, they will be lavishly rewarded and promoted to minion first class, with all the privileges that entails.

Okay. Here’s what we’re adding to the store today. And remember, the books tend to sell fast, so if you want them, jump on them fast.

BreachZone - Bookplate

Here we’ve got the third book in the Shadow Ops series, and has been awesomely received so far. All the copies we have come with signed bookplates from Myke. Even cooler, one of the copies will come with one of the Challenge Coins Myke had printed as a special promo for his book. It was packaged in at random, so it’ll  be a surprise for everyone involved who gets it.

If you want one, get it before it’s gone.

Shibboleth

This is the sequel to The Twelve Fingered Boy. (My review on Goodreads, if you’re interested.) These are lovely first-edition hardcover copies, all signed by the author.

You can grab them over here.

SandersonBlogImage

This massive tome is the second in the Stormlight Archive series. Aside from putting Wise Man’s Fear to shame in word count, it hit #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List.

If you don’t have your copy yet, why not buy it from us, and put some money toward a good cause at the same time?

  • New Boss Monster Promo Cards

Some of you might remember the folks over at Boss Monster from last year when they created a special promo card for Kvothe. They printed 200 of them, and we sold practically all of them at Gencon. The few we brought back and put in the store got snapped up really quickly.

This year, they’ve done two more promo cards exclusively for us. Both of them are versions of Bast.

Bastas_-_Epic_Thief

(Click to Embiggen.)

It’s a fun game that the crew here has really enjoyed.

If you’ve never played, you can pick up both the game *and* the two promo cards.

BossMonsterSet

Or, if you already have the game, and you’re just looking to fill out your sets, you have the option of buying  just the cards, whether you want just one or both together.

There aren’t many copies of the Epic Hero Bastas, so if you want one, you should probably grab it soon…

  • “Calling” Poster

calling-compressed

I’m pretty open about the fact that I have a profile on Deviantart where I skulk about, looking at fanart.

A while back, I found this lovely depiction of Kvothe and asked the artist (Beth, who has a great portfolio) if we could use it for Worldbuilders. Much to my surprise, she graciously donated the rights for us to make some posters. We’ve got 200 of them in the store signed and numbered.

That’s all for now. I’ll be seeing some of you in Chicago soon.

Fondly,

pat

Well, given the store is the Tinker’s Packs, and these are the most precious things in it, it seems only fair that it be called “The third pack”.

Heh. We might have to work something like that in when we do the redesign….

Announcement about a book? By you? If it’s the Laniel Young-Again book, squees will be had! (If it’s not, I’m still forecasting a shower of squees come the end of the week….)

“Shower of squees” feels a bit dirty for some reason … but whatever, no regrets.

I’d call it The Arcane Archives, mainly for the alliteration.

It may be too classic but, what about “A shelf to help the world”? Or even something like “Help your library, help the world” (Although the last one sounds more like an slogan than a name).

I can’t think up a name. But i was thinking a while back that you could put certain things on sale in bundles of three’s. Also I would really like to buy Kvothes cloak. The one from Fela would be pretty sweet, but of course we all want the one from Frelurian although I’m not entirely sure thats possible.

How about “The Top Shelf”? It has all kinds of fun allusions to quality and good times, and arguably even to the Name of the Wind if you want to stretch the allusion, since Kvothe runs an inn with a “bar”.

    This post reminds me that

“Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts.” -Elodin

So, after lighting a fire in my mind, and wringing a couple of tears from my heart, here are my ideas for the new class of books:

    Jax’s Stacks

    Signs of the Tomes

    Chronicler’s Chronologies
-A collection of stories, collected by a chronicler of stories

    The Names that Shape Us

    New Novels Every Term

    Viari’s Acquisitions

Naming IS quite hard… I now have even more respect for you

A good name really depends on what image you’re wanting to create or theme you’re attempting to fit. If you mainly wanted to emphasize the elite nature of these signed copies, something like “Top Shelf” or “Reserve Shelf” could work.

If you wanted to link these books to Worldbuilders, “Wordbuilders” wouldn’t be bad, though you might want a subtitle so people don’t think you just misspelled the link to the Worldbuilders site.

If whimsy is your thing, you might prefer “Signed Shenanigans,” “Competitor’s Corner,” or “Books I wish I’d written.”

“Books from the Four Corners” would be a fun tribute to your world while also reflecting the varied progeny of the offerings.

it works for me in that you could advertise it with, “Novelties from the Tinker’s Pack”. which is a good tie in with the store already, and these are definitely special and “Novel” items if we can forgive the pun. Which I think we can.

Sticking with the ‘Builders’ theme, how about Wordmasons? The section with the signed books could be the Wordmason’s Lodge.

Name suggestion: “The Book Shepherd” or just “Book Shepherds”.

The explanation is tripartite (like… oh, I dunno, the silence in the Waystone, for example). First: because I know you’re a Whedon fan. Second: because the proceeds go to Worldbuilders and thus Heifer, hence the reference to keeping livestock. Third: because the Tinker’s Packs will act as a “keeper of books”, until said books are “shepherded” to a (good) new owner.

So I did a quick Ctrl+F through the page and I’m not the first person to think of Lorren’s book-finding gillers, but I can at least put down a second vote for the concept. It’s not a perfect parallel – I get the impression Lorren wouldn’t think kindly of selling books from the Archives, even if it was for charity. Still. They are so cool it’s hard to put down a chance to reference them.

The tinker concept is in many series and historical. However, it brings to mind Pat’s world in this setting so I would stay in that world–

“The Broken Binding”? For the bookshop in Name of the Wind. I am really partial to “The Tinker’s Stacks”

This may, perhaps, be a bit too later to even be seen, but I’ll give it an attempt no less.

The valuable thing here over the rest of the normal books one could buy are the names transcribed within. And those gathered here should above all others know the value of a name. And the gift of these names goes to a charity, which is a kind and wonderful thing. So while I could never hope to have even a fraction of Kvothe’s naming sense, Personally, I’d call them…

    The Names of Compassion

Like the wind, compassion has many ever changing names. And in this case, those names belong to the authors giving to worldbuilders and to those purchasing said names.

Best of luck in your search for a name, Pat.

Ugh. All that and I forgot to check for typos at the end. And now, my confident and what I consider to be at least half clever post is marred forever. Ironic that the typo is on the words “Too late”.

Maybe “Chronicler´s list?”, or “From Chronicler´s bag” or something alike given that what he does is collect good stories around the world

Patrick your bit about adding cool signed copies to my library, and your conspicuous avoidance of the word ‘edition’ got me thinking. What about this for a name:

    “Signed Additions”
