A Thank You from Worldbuilders….

Heya everybody,

So Monday morning I turned in the pretty-much-entirely-done manuscript for The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

Want a peek at the French Cover?

10455302_803231523020247_6671642388373659392_n

(That was a rhetorical question. I was going to show it to you no matter what…)

Edit: As the comments below mention, the above cover is not actually the French cover. This is:

JAC La Musique du Silence (38)V1

(I’m sure you can see how I made the mistake at four in the morning.)

It’s a hard thing for me, letting go of a manuscript. Other authors are very matter of fact about it. But for me, obsessive word tinker than I am, I hate knowing that after a certain point I won’t be able to go in and fix things any more. That means the time leading up to my deadline tends to be an endless white-hot madness of intense, obsessive work.

So the last two days have consisted of me catching up on my sleep and trying to remember exactly what it is that I *do* when I’m not obsessively revising 14 hours a day.

I know it was pretty bad because when I came home tonight my little boy said to me: “You know Dad, you just got done with a deadline.” He said the last word with special emphasis. “And deadlines are a *lot* of work.”

It made me smile, not only because he’s cute as a button. But because it’s always nice to get some sympathy.

But it also let me know that he and Mom had had a talk about deadlines. Which probably meant he had gone to her with questions like, “Why don’t I ever see dad any more?” and “How come daddy falls asleep every time he sits down?”

Anyway, now that I’m at least slightly recovered, I get to start catching up on some things that I’ve been putting off.

Like posting the thank-you video from last year’s Worldbuilders fundraiser.

Before you watch it, I’d just like to thank everyone involved. We blew the top of things this last year, and your generosity has changed thousands of lives….

Wait, rather than type all of this out, I’m going just put up the video. There’s no real sense in me saying thank you before the thank-you video, is there?

Also, even all those wonderful people can mess things up sometimes, so we’ve got the usual blooper reel as well.

Honestly, I make much better bloopers than I do raw video….

Thanks for being awesome everybody.

And if you missed out on last year’s fundraiser. Or if watching that video made you eager for the next one to start. Well… we’ve got a little surprise coming up in a couple of weeks. We’re going to be trying something a little different early in July.

So keep an eye out for that.

pat

P.S. Yes. I’m an inveterate tease. You should all know that by now….

Chances are it will be the cover for the Brazillian, French, and Portugese editions. Simonetti’s art was used for all three editions of The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear.

This is most probably to be the Brazillian cover. I don’t know what editor published the other books in Portugal, but this one (Arqueiro) published them in Brazil.

And that is an amazing cover.

Thanks for being the most awesome writer in the world.
And, what the fuck? Seriously, I hope the spanish cover is as good as that one. Since the Way of Kings’s spanish cover, I’ve lost a little of patience with that.

Are there already estimated release dates for translated versions of “The Slow Regard of Silent Things”? If there is already a cover for the spanish (?) version, I guess translated versions won’t be too far away.

DEFINITELY the Brazilian Cover!! And it looks amazing!!! Thanks for showing us, Pat… Looking forward to read it…
Honestly, I’m glad that I’m not sad (?) that your next book isn’t day 3… Seems that it’s not only about the book, anymore… the writer himself matters, and you’re as much eagered to read anything he writes as you are with the first work you were in touch with… (y)

Definitely the Brazilian cover, but fogive him.. The artist is French, the amazing Marc Simonetti. That’s probably the origin of the confusion. ;-)

The thank you video is just wonderful :) so happy to support such a worthy cause.

Just out of curiosity, have all the Worldbuilders rewards been sent out? Rather disappointed, second year in a row I haven’t won anything.

Also, thank you for introducing me to the Heifer International charity. It’s my official Amazon smile charity now, too! …Not that that’s saying much, because it’s such a small percentage that goes to them, but still. Every little bit!

Pat, that is actually the Brazilian cover of ‘A Slow Regard of Silent Things’, from ‘Arqueiro’ (Archer) publicher; and oddly (or not) it translates to “The Music (or sound, in a poetic way) of Silence”

I guess I’m too late to guess that it’s acutally the Portuguese cover :)

Fun fact I was reminded of by your story about Oot: “cute as a button” means “cute as a button quail“. Which are indeed very cute.

Simonetti’s covers are incredible. Is there any way to get them with English text? If not, maybe someone could put together a boxed set for the KKC series, with Simonetti’s art over the English text, once the series is finished. I know I’d buy it.

It is the Brazilian cover for sure.

The art is probably by french artist Marc Simonetti. He made the covers for lots of fantasy books published in Brazil, from the Song of Ice and Fire books to the Mistborn series. His work is amazing. Google his name if you guys want to check it out!

I was lucky enough to be a volunteer at Heifer Ranch when Pat and World builders came for a few days and even luckier to be chosen to work with his group while they were there. I just wanted to say thank you for being such a big doner and helper to a truly good cause. Its amazing how much one person can do to help so many. Keep up the good work and great books. Thanks again

    Hi Pat !
I’m french and it’s such a pleasure to have awesome cover for your books :D
It’s why i buy yours in a physical version (bound book) instead of digital.

I wanted to ask you a question: do you think you will write a book about Elodin ? This character is source of so many mysteries about the world, the names, and his past.

So many comments are about the cover (which is incredibly beautiful) but did everyone see the videos? It’s 5 am here and the blooper reel had me smothering loud laughter so I didn’t wake my daughter. Awesome job, everyone! Great video, amazing charity, and fantastic work on the fundraiser!! (Did I use enough adjectives?)

There is a saying that fine art is never so much finished as it is abandoned or surrendered to the business end of the process. Sounds like you fall into that camp, Pat. :-)

“I’m sure Martin will be flattered.” Pat, I had to stop reading for a full 5 minutes while I sat and giggled over this little gem. Thanks for that.

I’m even more excited for The Slow Regard of Silent Things, now.

I just love the cover! But am I the only who saw this tree as a harp? If it was the purpose, it blends perfectly with the name, I think.
Hope I’m not the only one.

I just checked the website of Pat’s German publisher Klett-Coda for a peak at the German cover. Well, nothing about TSRoST there yet (I hope there will be?!), but I realized that their division of fantasy authors is kind of interesting. There are basically four categories on their webpage: “J.R.R. Tolkien”, “Tad Williams”, “Patrick Rothfuss” and “Other Authors”. Of course, that’s just fantasy authors published by Klett-Coda, but still.
