January Novelties: Games, Books, and Valentines

For those of you who don’t know, I’m leaving today to set sail on JoCo Cruise Crazy. While I’m gone, my internet will be spotty, if not downright nonexistent. I have the feeling this will be simultaneously be liberating and terrifying.

I wanted to post up several blogs this last week before I left. But I just haven’t been able to find the time. I’m trying to focus more on my writing these days, and that means other things get pushed into the background.

For some reason, I’m guessing most of you won’t mind this particular change in focus.

That said, there are some things I’m eager to talk about here on the blog. Some little. Some big. Some informational. I’m expecting to have a little time over the next week to finish at least one of those, so stay tuned if you’re curious to see what those are…

* * *

For today, we’ve got a couple new things happening in The Tinker’s Packs. Including the Valentine’s Day cards I mentioned on the blog a while back.

But first, some lovely books, donated by some lovely authors:

RandomWithSignature

We’re really grateful for these books from Alma Alexander. She even took the time to doodle in every one, so they’re extra special and cool.

“You will never read another shapeshifter book like this. Every surprise will catch you unwary. And, like me, you will find that others will have to pry it out of your fingers.” – Tamora Pierce

We only have a few, so grab yours right here.

Stranger_WithSignatures

Sherwood Smith’s new novel is gorgeous, and she worked with her co-author, Rachel Manija Brown, to send some lovingly doodled copies over to us.

Stranger‘s thrilling depiction of a changed and deadly future landscape filled with bloodthirsty plants and dangerously altered animals drew me in. The plot hooked me with its deft interweaving of messy personal problems and lethal conflicts that threaten the town, while the vivid, likeable characters kept me reading long into the night.” – Kate Elliott

We have ten copies, so if you want one all to yourself, you can grab your own copy right here.

  • Game codes for Torment: Tides of Numenera. Game is not yet released.

Torment

Some of you may remember that I’m writing for a video game. A game that means a lot to the gamer in me.

It’s still in production. I’m still working on my part of the writing. But it’s coming along nicely, and they’ve got a pre-order system set up on their website for when it comes out at the end of the year.

This works a little differently. Since it’s a pre-order of a game that was Kickstarted, you’ll be redeeming a code we send you for enough credits on the Torment website to get either the Digital Download Plus level or the Digital Collector’s Edition level (the second of which has a novella available for immediate download).

So you can preorder the game through us, read some stuff if you’re a Collector’s Edition type of person, and when the game comes out, take a week off work and play it like a crazy person. Not that I condone that sort of behavior, mind you…..

BelleCalendarPage

I’ve talked about the Karen Hallion Calendar a few times, pretty much because it’s just lovely.

KHCalendarSpread_1024x1024

January has come and nearly gone, so we’re decreasing the price of the calendar in The Tinker’s Packs to $10. We won’t be printing more after this, so don’t miss your chance to grab one while there’s still a chance it can help you keep track of your life.

  •  Valentine’s Day Cards

I’ve been wanting to do some Valentine’s day cards for years now. But this is the first time I’ve actually manage to think of it far enough ahead of time to brainstorm some good concepts, spent time designing them, and get them printed at a proper printer.

This is kind of an experiment for us. We’ve never done cards before, so we’re testing the water with these four:

There’s the beautiful art from Karen Hallion featuring Kvothe and Denna.

_DSC0933

It’s blank inside, so you can write whatever your heart desires.

Second we have a card with with one of my favorite pieces of art from The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

_DSC0939

Inside it says, “You are as lovely as the moon.” Which just happens to be, by strange coincidence, seven words.

If those seven words aren’t quite to your liking, our third card gives you more options for The Seven Words that Will Make a Person Love You.

_DSC0940

My favorite is: “I brought back Firefly for another season.”

Finally, the most requested card was this one:

_DSC0941

(Click to Embiggen.)

I remember working on that particular part of book two for days, wondering to myself, “Is this going to make sense to anyone but me?”

Apparently it did, because at last count, I’ve heard of at least a dozen different people using it in their wedding ceremonies.

It’s available over here.

You can buy all of these cards singly, or in three-packs. Or you can get a set of all four cards for those of you who would like one of each.

As always, all proceeds from The Tinker’s Packs goes to Worldbuilders. Making the world a better place.

Wish me luck, folks, I’ve never been on a cruise before, and while I’m looking forward to spending time with my family, I hear they don’t have hardly any snow at all on this cruise. I don’t know how well I’m going to be able to cope with that rapid climate shift.

What a beautiful way to celebrate Valentine’s day with your wife! I suggest you give Sarah one of those “You are as lovely as the moon” cards during your cruise and, during a romantic-lovely night, prepare your third child… I assure you that we won’t be surprised when you post again the sentence “guess who’s having a baby?” later this year.
Boa viagem para você e sua família!

I particularly like the last card. Since reading the book, these sentences never have left me. Actually they made me start looking for other quotations that somehow move me. Now they are the centrepiece of my “quotations wall” in our kitchen. There are also quotes from Jane Austen and Goethe. That’s where you range, Pat.

Pat, I think you’ll find the spotty internet connection more liberating than terrifying. I took my family to Hocking Hills State Park on vacation last year, and we couldn’t even get cellular reception most of the time, let alone internet. It was a bit disconcerting at first, like you feel when you forget your cell phone at home, but for the most part it was great not worrying about calls, texts, facebook alerts and the like.

Have a great time with your family on the cruise! I will make sure the snow doesn’t misbehave too much until you get back.

Also I was really pleased to see that my seven words were included. I’m not sure if they were original, but it made me happy.

Last time I checked, “Do you want to go on an adventure?” was 8 words… has something changed?

Any idea if that Auri art will ever be available as a print? I’m thinking of buying the card just to frame it, but if there are plans for a print I’d be willing to wait. I absolutely love that piece.

I would love a print, too! I already bought the card to frame but a larger version would be lovely.

“For some reason, I’m guessing most of you won’t mind this particular change in focus.”

Understatement level: on par with “Occasionally, when he is emotionally perturbed, Kvothe makes suboptimal choices.”

Unrelated: those Valentine’s cards are spectacular.

I’m going to give the “Anyone can love a thing” card to my husband on our upcoming wedding day along with his gift, it’s perfect.

You can add my husband and I to your list of those who’ve used your “Anyone can love a thing because” quote in their wedding. We are huge fans. Have a wonderful time on your cruise!

I actually used the “Anyone can love a thing because…” quote at my sister’s wedding. I was her matron of honor, and it really described my sister and brother-in-law’s relationship perfectly. I read this quote for them before they exchanged vows, and it brought the entire crowd (geeks and non-geeks alike) to tears. Not a single dry eye in the audience!

Pat, I think you probably would have loved this wedding. It was a Pirate and Cowboy themed wedding! All the more reason to come out to Colorado :) Lots of geek culture mixed into the wedding, beautiful ceremony.

I just noticed a disturbing lack of coffee mugs in the tinker’s pack. That might not be a big deal for the average person, but for someone like me who’s always struggling to look fresh on the way to the office is a little depressing.

I think a couple of posters and valentine’s day cards will have to do it for now.

    Cheers.

    Patrick,

A while back I criticized you for not writing more. I recently read Slow Regard and I enjoyed owe you an apology.

After I read it I thought, “While writing this book, Patrick must have made some major mental changes to the next Kvothe book.” But then I reread Name of the Wind and I decided that you hint about something about Auri that I’d never noticed before.

May I ask, does Auri have a crooked nose?

    Hello Pat :)
I’m a huge fan from Brazil. Yesterday I took a flight to Orlando. I was there, taking a cab to the airport and I saw a bookstore. Asked the taxist to wait a few minutes. I ran inside the bookstore and bought the portuguese version of Slow Regard. Read it all on my way to Orlando. I was completely in love with that book. With Auri. I don’t have words to describe how I love Slow Regards. And i really mean it. I do love it. Arriving in Orlando, I went to a restaurant and next to it, I saw a bookstore and i went in. The moment I crossed the doors I knew i had to look for your book. Went down the main corridor and i saw it. A hard cover, signed copy of Slow Regards. At first, I was thinking “how cool is that?” Took few steps further in the corridor. Stood there for a few seconds. The moment I laid my eyes on it. It was love at first sight. The reason I’m sending you this is because of Slow Regards’ endnotes. I was shocked. As i said before, I can’t describe how much I love this book. I guess a good sinthesis to this text is: Thank you. Thank you so much for writing Slow Regards.
    Sincerly, a fan.

I LOVED THE THREE OF THEM! what a shame I have no one to gift them this valentine´s day… I guess I will have to get them for myself
    greetings from Mexico
PS: it is just me or “its dangerous to go alone, take this” its a reference to Pokemon
PS PS: does somebody knows how much does the shipping cost from tinker´s packs to Mexico? I also really want some jewelry

The “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.” quote was originally from The Legend of Zelda on NES. It’s been referenced in a lot of places, though, since the mid-80’s, and it’s possible Pokemon is one of them.

I really like the “Anyone can love a thing because” quote but I also feel like the card would have looked even more beautiful if there was some kind of illustration(s) to go with it. Maybe next year? I realize you hadn’t even decided to do cards until very recently.

Hi ^-^ so I’m very new here, joined maybe an hour ago and ever since I’ve read your books, I’ve been dying to just send you a message – which is surprising of me because I believe in simply appreciating and admiring rather than actually attempting communication with anyone who has written a/n amazing book/s. I’m from South Africa so I have to wait ages for your books to reach the nearest bookstores once they’ve been released and -this hurts me a little (a lot)- I’ll probably never get to go to a book signing of yours.
I’ve told all my friends to read your books because they are amazingly unique, well put together and just so full of tension and excitement that it’s almost impossible to put them down – the one about Auri was just so sweet and tender I had myself a little happy cry. But it wasn’t just the books that have made me feel like finding some way of contacting you – I’ve gathered that you’re witty, funny, sweet, modest and… human. There’s more personality behind your biographies and in your notes about the books than I’ve ever come across before by any other author – but maybe I don’t read enough any more.
Looking at all the cards you have posted here is making me wish I was born somewhere else and to a family that… (okay I won’t go there) because they’re stunning and won’t be available here for this valentines day.
I really hope that you enjoy your trip.
    -sincerely Willownymph

Pat your various panels and office hours were the highlight of my cruise (second only to watching my husband sing karaoke with Jonathon Coulton) thank you for your time and patience with the Sea Monkeys <3
Also, Slow Regard is a beautiful story but more than that, it was the words – strings of beauty – that has me rereading somewhat obsessively. Thank you

THANKS TO DR BENEDICT FOR SOLVING MY PROBLEMS

An amazing testimony on a spell caster who brought my wife back to me.. My name is Andy Sowers,i live in Australia, and I’m happily married to a lovely and caring wife, with two kids.A very big problem occurred in my family seven months ago, between me and my wife.so terrible that she took the case to court for a divorce.she said that she never wanted to stay with me again, and that she didn’t love me anymore. So she packed out of my house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get her back, after much begging, but all to no avail.and she confirmed it that she has made her decision, and she never wanted to see me again. So on one evening,as i was coming back from work,i met an old friend of mine who asked of my wife.So i explained every thing to her,so she told me that the only way i can get my wife back,is to visit a spell caster, because it has really worked for her too.So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice, than to follow her advice. Then she gave me the email address of the spell caster whom she visited.{[email protected]}. So the next morning,i sent a mail to the address she gave to me,and the spell caster assured me that i will get my wife back the next day. What an amazing statement!! I never believed,so he spoke with me,and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next morning, So surprisingly, my wife who didn’t call me for the past seven {7}months,gave me a call to inform me that she was coming back.So Amazing!! So that was how she came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and she apologized for her mistake, and for the pain she caused me and my children. Then from that day,our relationship was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster DR benedict. So.
So,if you are in a similar problem or any kind of problems you can also contact him via his email([email protected]}he is the solution to all your problems and predicaments in life.his email again is{[email protected]}.

As much as i would like to advice and give my testimony how i resolve my marriage problems, typing a long text wouldn’t help me tell the truth better so i would just be straight forward in what i have to say.First love spell are real second if you are to contact any spell caster be very careful so as not to contact the wrong one as at now the only one i would recommend is Ajayi Ololo. He helped me with my marriage problem and some other thing i needed to be fixed can really give details here.At a time it was hard to trust him because he asked for material i had to pay for or produce as wrong as i was,i thought he was reaping me off my money as the non-real and fake spell caster did.Just when i thought to say no more he finished what i had asked him to do for me. I felt humiliated for not trusting him at first. For me i can say he is real and if you ever contact him have no fear you’re safe with him because he can fix the longest broken relationship you can see other testimony online if you are skeptical about mine. His contact email is ajayiololo@yahoo. com
