German Book, German Tour (And Austria)

[Edit (3/4/15): There’s updated info for these events in this blog so be sure to check it out…]

So today (Feb 21st) The Slow Regard of Silent Things hits the shelves in Germany.

Rothfuss_Musik_Stille_3d_4c(Woo! New cover!)

As usual, this book is significantly larger than its English counterpart. I haven’t gotten to see one in person yet, but in this photo mock-up they seem to be able to fit my name and the title horizontally on the spine. So that indicates that the book has undergone its typical 40% growth from being translated into German. (A phenomenon I mentioned in a blog a couple years back.)

Despite the fact that the post office is slow delivering my copy, I’ll be getting to see a copy of this book in person soon. In fact, I hope to be seeing a lot of them, as I’m going to be making a trip to Germany and Austria next month.

Here’s the schedule:

March 13-14  – Leipzig Book Fair

March 14 – Leipzig

March 16 – Berlin

March 17 – Cologne (Koln)

March 18 – Reutlingen

March 20 – Vienna, Austria

As you can see, there are a lot of opportunities to catch me on this trip and witness my catastrophically inept attempts to speak German.

  • Details about the Events:

Though we’re calling most of these events “Readings” most of them are actually going to be readings combined with Question and Answer periods, followed by signings.

That said, each event is different, and I highly recommend you take a close look at the details of the event you’re thinking of attending to make sure you understand what’s really happening there.

Will you need a ticket? Will you need to reserve a place at the signing?

Honestly? I don’t know. It’s just my job to show up at these things and look pretty….

  • Concerning where I’m going and/or not going:

Do I wish I could do more events? Yes. But there’s only so much time in the world. I can’t hit major city in the country. Not even a quarter of them.

So before y’all start screeling things like “Why don’t you come to Frankfurt!!!1!” Please keep in mind that I’m already traveling more than 6,500 kilometers to get into your neighborhood. Globally speaking, I’m going to be right next door. If you’d really like to see me, why don’t you and your friends have a road trip and come the last 150 kilometers on your own?

C’mon. You know you want to have a road trip….

  • A Warning:

I don’t know when I’ll be back in Germany. But it probably won’t be for at least a couple years. This is fair warning. If you’d really like to hear me speak and get your book signed, this is the time to do it.

  • An Apology:

Originally, I had one more event in Heidelberg, and I know a few people got tickets and made plans before it was cancelled.

I’m incredibly sorry about that.

Some personal matters came up, and I had to change plans. I feel really bad about it.

In an attempt to make things right, everyone who was signed up for Heidelberg was offered tickets to the event in Reutlingen. What’s more, that event will also be live streamed, so you can see me, even if you can’t be there in person. (I’ll be posting the link to the livestream here, on twitter, and on facebook when we have it.)

{Fancy placeholder for eventual livestream link}

  • A Request:

As you can see, I’m announcing these events about 3 weeks ahead of time. What’s more, I’m painfully aware that a *lot* of the people who might be interested in attending don’t read my blog, or don’t speak English.

So if you know anyone who’d like to attend but might not know about it, I’d deeply appreciate it if you’d clue them in.

Thanks everybody,

pat

P.S. For those of you who are here in the US, and feeling all ensaddened because none of these events are for you.

Here’s two shows I have coming up with Paul & Storm and Joel Hodgson that I have coming up. (And yes, I just got a bit of a tingle when I typed that last bit.)

3/26 Portland http://bit.ly/NMPortland

3/27 Seattle http://bit.ly/NMSeattle

I’ll be making a more elaborate posting about this later, but I thought I might want to throw this up sooner rather than later for those of you who like to plan your lives in advance a bit.

We’re going to be bringing in other guests, too, so you might want to grab your tickets sooner rather than later….

I just noticed that the Dussmann event page says 7 pm, not 8 pm. Maybe they just want us to be there extra early ;)

Actually i have been to a couple of readings at Dussmann and called them yesterday. They are planning with 120 seats, 200 at the most. You should give them a call Pat, or maybe call your german publisher, so they can set up a bigger location. I expect at least 400-500 hundred people. You have a HUGE fanbase over here. And Poland is just one hour away from Berlin by car. They should probably rent a bigger room, else you might have an angry mob at hand.

Looking forward to seeing you in Berlin.
I am probably going to sleep in front of the bookstore. there is just no way that i am going to miss this!

Well, this makes me glad they sell tickets for Cologne. I don’t think I would go there if I had to try to arrive as early as possible, with a chance that there’ll be hundreds of people already waiting in line anyway…

Still, I wish you the best of luck for attending the Berlin event!

Having been to the Dussmann location in Berlin before, (and knowing you DO have quite some fans around here) I strongly support ManiacWoodpeckers recommendation of calling your german publisher for a bigger location in Berlin.

If you give aspiring musicians a big 3-level bar to play, you should have something equally matching for a great storyteller such as yourself.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you the 16th!

Will you be reading from the German version or the English?
Reason I ask is that I do not understand more than about 15 words of german and 2 of them is beer and mead.
Would hate to fly the 350 km to listen to “gibberish” (No offence meant toward the german language.)

    • Posted February 21, 2015 at 3:18 AM | Permalink

Guess that Pat shares your German vocabulary. Though he is descended from Schwarzwald folks, i understood that he is not deep into that language.

    • Posted February 21, 2015 at 3:33 AM | Permalink

I’ll be reading in German. But there will be translators there for the Q&A.

No. I’m sorry. I was exhausted when I wrote that.

I mean to say I’ll be reading in *ENGLISH* and there will be someone translating into German for the Q&A.

At some of the events, there will also be German actors reading parts of my work.

hehe, I was just going to call you out on that… A shame, though, that would have been really interesting. In the event description for Reutlingen however they mention an actor who’s going to do the reading?
Anyways – will see you there! And if you’d like to check out the beautiful swabian alps while you’re there… I’d be happy to be your tour guide!

We got a bit confused for the Cologne event at first when we read about it at the start of the year… kind of sounded like you’d just be sitting there and the other person (supposedly well-know, but…) would do all the reading.

(This may seem odd, but the translation culture in Germany is horrible; it feels like everything has to be translated to validate the translation industry. Try watching English TV shows – short version: get Netflix, no other chance.)

Hi there. I am really drunk at the moment, so please forgive me. It is really not my intention to bitch at you.

I am one of your German fans, but I normally enjoy reading originally English books in English.

I am quite happy that your novels are being translated into German, so those fellow countrymen of mine, who are not as proficient reading English as me can enjoy your books as well (caution: I don’t consider myself proficient writing English. I am quite sure I suck…).

However: I can’t believe the you are visiting Germany, shortly after I left for Japan (for good maybe?). Leipzig would have been well in my reach, too. Maybe you will be visiting Japan some day? Preferebly in the Okayama region?

Anyway, I am really looking forward to the next book in the Kinkiller series. It is hard to wait, but I am really enjoying your well thought out writing. I would rather wait than have you lower your standards.

    Hi Pat,
I was really thrilled as I visited my local book store here in Heidelberg and saw that you wouldn’t just come to Germany, but even here into my home town. Equally sad I was when I heard that the reading had been canceled. But it is understandable that things change, especially when planning from overseas, so no problem there. I will try to see you in Reutlingen instead (1,5 hours drive is not that much I guess, especially when you won’t be back for a couple of years). But let me tell you, you really missed something, Heidelberg is a wonderful city with a unique medieval flair – I guess Kvothe would have liked it here too ;)

    Looking forward to seeing you!

Don’t you by the chance also consider some All European Tour? You know, The Czech Republic is quite near Germany and Austria… The Slow regards of silent things is not yet translated into Czech, so I read it in English. Considering the language used it was really difficult, interesting and also impresive reading by the way. So maybe when the Czech translation is done you might come to visit us here in Prague too??

It seems almost mandatory for me to complain that you are coming to Europe, yet you have been selfish enough not to schedule a visit directly into my living room in Brussels.
Once I managed to get over this most distressing fact and reawakened from my distraught state, I realised that Brussels is a mere 2 hour train ride from Cologne. Score.
Being from the UK originally my ability to speak foreign languages is shameful – I can only just about speak French with the local populous here. So it will be the pleasure of me and my wife to join you in our attempts to butcher the German language.

See you in Cologne and safe travels.

YES! Thank you so much for taking the time to come to Austria, Pat. We often get overlooked. It’s very frustrating when, for example, one of your favorite bands plays 3 shows in Germany and none in Austria. It means so much to your fans here, especially this one. I am already ecstatically spreading the word to everybody I know. It’s the first time I will have a chance to meet one of my all time favorite authors. I can’t wait!

Quick question: will you be bringing English hardcover editions of the “Slow Regard” to the readings?
I won’t be able to make it to any of them (I’m appropriately crushed, too), but some friends of mine will be there and I’ll have them buy the book for me, if you have it. Otherwise, I’ll have to order it beforehand. I wouldn’t want to read it in German. And that has nothing to do with it being 40% longer over here. ;-)
    Thank you and good travels!

I can’t believe nobody else has posted this, but in addition to the cover the title has also changed right? My German is rusty but I think that translates to “The Music [of/in] Silence”, which is another awesome and fitting title.

Yes, it does translate to “The Music of Silence”, so the Spanish and German title are the same. I cannot think of an elegant way to translate “The Slow Regard of Silent Things” elegantly into German, but this is another great title for the book, of course.

    Hey Pat,

after reading all posts, i just wrote an email to your german publisher and to Dussmann. 200 Seats are a joke, if people travel to Berlin from Riga, Poland, Denmark and the Netherlands those 200 seats will never be enough. nobody wants to have a dissapointed or even angry mob at hand. i expect at least 400 people, if not more for the Berlin reading. I dont know how serious they will take those mails but i think it would be nice if you could tell them about our fears, of not getting a seat after literally travelling hundreds of miles to get to see you.

The damn things make a grown up sleep like a baby sometimes, I’ll do my best not to :D
The question was already asked but not answered: Will there be a “one book only”-policy? I mean… You’ve got at least 3 – not counting the “childrenbooks”. A “3 book”-policy would be better fitting ;)

Pat & Vienna: We are coming! I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it! – My girlfriend just booked the tickets for our Germany-to-Vienna-tour. I’m afraid I can’t take my cat with us (he loves you yeah yeah yeah). I hope you’ll still be conscious in Vienna after traveling through Germany :-))

    Dear Pat,

I am one of your German fans as well and. I am not sure wheter I make it to one of your readings, but I use this news to write some words into your blog.

I want to thank you for bringing me back the fantasy genre! When I was young, I enjoyed reading Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, but lost interest in fantasy completely – I don’t know why.
It was my boyfriend who gave me “The Name of the Wind” as a Christmas gift and, after that, the two parts of “The Wise Man’s Fear” as well. And I was totally hooked by them! I also bought the audio books to spend some more time in Kvothe’s world. During my master thesis, when I was sitting at the computer all day, I checked google for news of the third novel almost every day. At least I found out about “The Slow Regard of Silent Things”, and that Blog here, of course :-)
And, as I mentionned, your books opened my eyes: I like fantasy – no, I love fantasy! So I discovered a lot of other great stories as well, some of them only because you recommended them on the back of the book :-)
So thank you, Pat, for your great books and for bringing back fantasy into my life ;-)

    Jule

I’ll be at the Leipzig Book Fair, and probably at the event in Berlin :) And I feel a bit like cheating because I wanted to go to Leipzig anyway and live in Berlin so no big traveling is necessary. But I am overjoyed you are coming to Germany. I tell all my friends about it, be sure xD

Doesn’t that translate to “The Music of Stillness”? Any particular reason for the change?

No, it doesn’t. One of the reasons why translating English to German results in much longer books is that the German language doesn’t have as many words as the English language. That means that we need more words to say something that might only have one specific word in English. Also, it means that a lot of words have more than one meaning – including “Stille”, which can mean stillness, but it can also mean silence, calm, tranquility or quiescence (among other things, depending on the context.)

While the English language does indeed have more words than German (although that depends on a lot of factors and how you count it – there are no exact numbers) this has nothing to do with the length of German or English texts. English is a language that relies heavily on borrowing, resulting in many different words that other languages like German would form through composition or other means. What makes English texts longer are grammatical differences. E.g. in English you can use adjectives or adverbs while the same word would have to be expressed in a dependent clause in German. Same goes for participles. While it is perfectly normal for an English speaker to say “Doing so”, the literal German translation of “Das machend” sounds pretty awkward, so one would rather translate it to “Als er das machte”.

In reply to Ser Scot: Yes, “Music of Stillness” or “Music of Silence” would be an adequate translation.
@Franziska: As well as there are no definite synonyms, translations always are some kind of interpretation. Going by your logic, you couldn’t ever translate anything from one language into another because you can never grasp the whole meaning of a certain word with a single corresponding word ;)

OMG! I’m so excited that you’ll be in Vienna. I get the Kuppitsch newsletter each month and when I read your name the other day, I immediately marked March 20th with a huge red cross in my calender :)
I live like 2 blocks away from the store. This is going to be the best day of the year! Thanks so much for not forgetting about your German speaking fans :)

Unfortunatley I don’t see any option to add a photo. So I just tell you, Pat.
I just bought a copy of “Die Musik der Stille” and it has about 170 pages (roughly 13cm x 21cm). Your name and the title is printed vertically not horizontally.
But however.. I cannot wait to read it.

    Hi Pat,

this is truly fist-pump worthy great.

    However ;-)

My worry is not only that people won’t fit, but also that people, who don’t speak German or who specifically come to hear you read might be disappointed, as several events seem to have a German reader.

Which, event has you reading yourself in your own wonderful English?

Thank you so much in advance and see you soon!

    First reaction: Austria? WOOHOOO!
    Second reaction: Just Vienna? :(

Nothing close enough for me to attend, still great for a lot of other people though.

PS: Try the pastries/desserts while you’re in Austria. So many delicious things here! :)

The Reading in Berlin changed it’s location to the audimax of the Humboldt university!
Start 19:00, still 16. of march.

Definitely a better suited place. should have enough space for all of us, hopefully.

I’ve just finished reading this and it’s awesome. Don’t know if the pretty much spot on description of an autistic girl was intended from the start but I really like the whole story and the way it’s written.
I’d also love to read more about Auri in the future.

    Spoilers:

Her past seems to have been a traumatic one with her father and she seems to love Kvothe (german name). I really hope for a kind of happy end for her…
