Does the title of this blog make sense to anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
God. Does *that* reference even work anymore? Am I suddenly, inexcusably old? Am I out of touch with today’s youth? Are millennials killing me?
Welcome to today’s blog. Where apparently the theme is going to be crippling insecurity, early onset dementia, and my own impending decrepitude.
The other theme will be a couple pieces of news that y’all might otherwise miss.
The *other* other theme is that this blog focuses on you having a few new opportunities to listen to my dulcet tones…
- After On
So a while back, I did a little big of narration for an audiobook:
(I don’t think the cover of the physical book does that pulsing thing.)
I didn’t do the whole book. But I was one of the people involved. And given that some the other folks were
As many of you know, I recorded the audio version of Slow Regard of Silent Things myself. So I’m not an absolute stranger to audio narration. But as many of you *also* know, the main reason I felt comfortable taking a runner at that project was because… well… it was mine. Furthermore, it was pretty short. But thirdly and most importantly, a complete lack of dialogue meant that I didn’t have to do character voices, which is something that makes me nervous.
This book…. Well… this book did have dialogue. And that made me super nervous. But the folks who invited me in told me what they were looking for is someone to read parts of a hugely overwritten and overly dramatic sci-fi novel.
“What the hell,” I thought. “Why not give it a try?”
I don’t remember much about four hours in the studio other than the fact that I started out nervous, and ended up with a sore throat from screaming into the microphone like a Flash Gordon villain threatening to destroy the earth with my Doom Ray.
If you want to see a review of the book, there’s an article over here with some with samples of the various audio narrators (myself included.) I have not listened to it, because hearing my own voice on audio is my personal kryptonite.
If you’re interested in the book, you can get a copy here.
- DragonTalk Podcast
As I mentioned in my previous blog. I recently spent some time out in Seattle doing some secret things with Wizards of the Coast. (They’re the people who own Dungeons and Dragons, in case you didn’t know.)
After I was done with my secret projects, I got a chance to be on their podcast. Where I talked about games, kids, and… well… kind of a big mash of stuff.
A good time was had by all.
- PAX West
I’m hitting PAX over the weekend. And while I’ve had to cut my visit a little short (Sorry for those of you who were hoping to catch my Friday Signing.) I’m still going to be there on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Saturday, September 2
5:30-6:30pm, An Evening with Pat Rothfuss, Hydra Theater (in the Grand Hyatt Hotel)
Warning: May Contain swearing and/or singing.
Sunday, September 3
6:30-9:30pm: Acquisitions Inc, Main Theater (Benaroya Hall)
Playing D&D on stage. Like a Boss.
Monday, September 4
1pm-3pm: Acquisitions Inc Full Team Signing, Autographing Room
There might be a couple more events tucked in there. For example, I’m hoping to add in another signing to replace the one I had to cancel. If/when that happens, trust that I’ll update things here…
- The NOTW Art Deck Kickstarter:
I’m guessing y’all already know about it. But if you didn’t, we’re doing this:
Four beautiful decks of playing cards with character art based off The Name of the Wind.
The big news is this: We’re finally adding poker sets to the Kickstarter. We’ve been working with Wyrmwood to design and prototype beautiful wooden chips in a case for those of you who want to play some cards in style.
I’m giving you blog readers a heads-up here as soon as possible because quantities of these are going to be limited. So stay tuned to the kickstarter on Friday if you want to try and grab one….
Lastly. If you have any questions about the Kickstarter, drop them here in the comments. We’ll be posting an updated FAQ soon, and we’d like to be as comprehensive as possible.
Later all, see some of you soon at PAX.

Don’t worry, Pat. I get the Bosstones reference, and Ferris Bueller references will never go out of style!
Got the ref too Pat ;) Looking forward to seeing how the poker sets turn out!
*nods at both references* Crap, does this mean I’m old too?? This is the 20th anniversary of my favorite MMORPG and my son is now the age I was when I first started playing…. O_o
Wish I weren’t in exile in Eastern Wa or I’d come listen to swearing and/or singing. Have a great time!
It seems like people got the references. Or at least, that’s the impression that I get…
Nicely done!
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are closer to a current reference than TSR. Wizards bought them out 20 years ago.
Have fun at PAX.
“….screaming into the microphone like a Flash Gordon villain threatening to destroy the earth with my Doom Ray”
That sounds AWESOME.
I remember when the BossTones were a New Thing. You’re not that old. Well, maybe you are. But so am I, and lots of other people are too. We get to enjoy youth through our kids now, at a safe distance, whilst relaxing in our easy chairs. It ain’t so bad.
Yo, if you’re in my town, I do owe you a drink at the very least. I don’t know if seattle has as good of slushies as stevens point, but if you’ve had to survive our airport, there’s a few places that put alcohol in them.
(that said, seattle is A Lot of things, as is Doing Cons & Signings, so it’s obviously understandable if you spend the majority of non-pax time sleeping)
Kickstarter link.
(for those that haven’t seen.)
Thank you!
Ferris Bueller will never be forgotten, knock on wood. The Bosstones won’t last quite that long.

Yes to most of your initial questions. But don’t worry, there are plenty of us old, out of touch people who still get every reference in Ready Player One.
Hey, Pat – if you’re looking for an introductory D&D type game for the kids (and I have no personal vested interest in this other than having backed the Kickstarter years ago to get the game for my at the time 9 year old) – check this game out – Story Realms: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gamesalute/story-realms
It was finally produced a few weeks ago, and it’s a gorgeous-looking game, with so much lovely, kid-appropriate artwork).

Hey Pat, are you still working on a third part or are you just doing fundraisers and nerd-celeb stuff for the rest of your life?
I mean, I’m sure the peripherals are great for you, but hasn’t more time passed between book two and three than has passed between one and two?
