Unplugged in The City of Brotherly Love

As I write this, the Worldbuilders Fundraiser has raised more than a quarter million dollars in its first three days. Specifically, we’re at $283,000 dollars. Which I have to say, is pretty awesome.

(If you don’t know what I’m talking about, wander over there and have a little look around. The upshot is if you donate to our fundraiser, you get to make the world a better place while having the chance to win a bunch of awesome prizes at the same time. More on that below…)

As I write this, I’m also out in Philadelphia so that I can do some charity rabble-rousing here at PAX Unplugged. And it have to tell you, It feels wild to me to be anywhere but glued to my desk, calling people, having meetings, orchestrating donations, doing livestreams to promote the charity, and refreshing the fundraiser home page like a rat pressing a feeder bar in a psych 101 textbook.

We always have wonderful partners that help us during the fundraiser, and you can visit some of them if you happen to be at Unplugged with me!

First and foremost, we have Brotherwise Games. We’ve worded together several times over the years. Perhaps you know about the Kingkiller Hero Pack they made for their game Boss Monster.

More recently, I got on board when they created Call to Adventure, a storytelling game I absolutely adore. And now that The Name of the Wind Expansion has been released I’m going to be playing it live on stage on Friday. And because they’re awesome people, they’ve started their own fundraiser page for the charity, which has some great stuff on it, including this Worldbuilders-exclusive card.

Another friend of the charity is the fabulous Wyrmwood, which makes the sexiest gaming tables I have ever seen. They’ve come through for us again, and every $10 bucks you donate to the fundraiser gets you a chance to win an amazing Black Walnut Prophecy gaming table.

If you haven’t seen one yet, and you’re here at PAX, you should stop by their booth and drool a little, just please don’t drool onto the table.

(this could be you)

Last but not least, have our awesome collaborations with the D&D community that we debuted at Unplugged last year, and we’re happy to be giving away more of those this year! In fact, donations made to these three teams will during Unplugged will go into special prize drawings that we’ll do on Monday for fabulous bonus prizes!  Of course, all of those donations also enter you into the overall lottery as well.

If you’re looking for me, here’s where I’ll be:

    Hey there,

the link to the fundraiser seems to be incorrect (I get the message ‘Oops – we can’t find that page’).

Anyways, off to donate. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do!

Wow, bitter trolls like you still exist? I would have thought for sure that every impatient, entitled jackass like you would have already imploded from the force of their self-inflicted misery.

    Grow up.

What is wrong with you man? People go through things we can’t even imagine. No one completely knows someone else’s journey, and from what updates we get it seems like Pat has had a go of it. So maybe show a little compassion and not try to be a colossal dick on a post that is for charity!

Pat, while you’re at PAX PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE talk to my folks representing Heroes Rise Podcast!! (The Brit is a big fan, though he’ll try to act cool) We’re a D&D News/Tips Podcast and he flew over The Pond just for PAX and I think he’d just DIE (in a very calm British way) if he got to meet you!

    Oh good grief — really?
Just don’t, okay? Pretend you’re a human being who can treat other human beings with respect until it clicks; there’s neither a need nor an excuse for this kind of thing.

    Hello,

So I’m not supposed to be disrespectful, which seems reasonable. So can someone describe the respectful and appropriate method for gaining information about book 3? I’m also hoping that I will not be disrespected by being insulted/criticized/ignored because I am hoping to get more information about a book that I am looking forward to.
I know that this is a post about the fundraiser, but if I comment on other posts, I am ignored.

    Thank you.

Pat doesn’t like giving spoilers for his or anybody else’s work. There really isn’t a way for any of us to get information about book 3. Whenever it is finished, it will be a wonderful surprise. Until then, we shouldn’t expect anything.

So it is true that he ignores people if they ask questions about book 3?
I’m not trying to be snarky in asking this. I’ve been seeing some of the Worldbuilders stuff pop up on some social media, which got me thinking about his books. So I went searching, and found a lot of comments online saying that he was ignoring people on this topic, which surprised me. Just hoping to clarify.

Ohhh…I see…so he asks us to ” donate ” to his many many many projects and collaborations, but if we want to Kno any little semblance of progress on the loooooong overdue “Doors of Stone” and we .. his loyal faithful flock are ignored and belittled? How dare Someone want to know what kind of wait is still in store for us…???

Well, I have recently learned that no only is asking for progress ignored, but actively censored. I had made some posts on the facebook post regarding this blog, highlighting that it is not unreasonable to ask questions. These posts have since been deleted. I know that it is not due to vulgarity or hateful language, as I work very hard to avoid this when posting online.
So I will request the same thing here that I do anywhere. If I am wrong in my information or have a flaw in my reasoning, please discuss this with me. But if I bring up a reasonable point, please discuss this with me rather than engage in censorship. Especially in this forum, with an author, the censorship of others is highly ironic given the history of various organizations throughout history censoring authors.

He gets the question a lot, which is great in that it means people love the books and are interested in what comes next but bad for mental health. In case any of you are genuine, let’s have an imagine to illustrate the point. It’s going to be long.

Have you ever had a report due, and you’re trying to work on it but you have other things going on and you *really* want it to be perfect – people really liked the last ones and expect the same standard, but then because of how memory works they remember mostly the good bits stuck together like a movie trailer so in their memory it’s *even better*.

Now imagine that you have this weight of responsibility to deliver, but different people keep asking you if the report is done yet, when will it be done, what is going to be in it? They have an idea for something that should be in it. Each person only asks you once, and 90% of them are maybe quite nice about it but your office is the size of the internet + everywhere you ever go out to. These 1’s add up. Each time they ask, you feel guilty it isn’t ready yet and pressure to get it done, terrible it isn’t and then kind of frustrated that you are having these feelings thrown onto you. No matter how many times you go through this, the journey is the same and it grinds you down and turns you numb to try to lessen the effect, and even that feels wrong because you don’t want to not be able to feel but it’s overwhelming.

Can we agree that even though that isn’t what most of the people asking the question *mean* to happen, it isn’t great? Whether you think it *should* be what happens, accept that it is what *does* happen and the choice is not yours. Be considerate of that and self-manage your curiosity.

I am not Pat and I don’t want to put words into his mouth. I will say only that I believe this is a pretty good representation of how *I* perceive things and if work under this assumption you probably won’t go too far wrong.

ps. Ever heard of Godwin’s Law? You arrived there fast, perhaps reconsider? :)

Yes, but he wouldn’t be pestered so often if he would be a bit more communicative and just address the elephant in the goddamn room.

This is demonstrably untrue. You’re not the first or last to try and make this point.

There is no progress report beyond:

He’s working on it and the moment it’s done he will announce it.

You can ask, but he hasn’t offered up more than this in quite some time. As for the removal of posts, I suspect it’s to keep places (facebook, here) from degenerating into flame wars and frowny faces over a question that won’t be answered anyway.

If you’re just looking to discuss with other, not-Pat people there are several discussion forums around where these types of things are discussed.

        Cheers.

I’ve not donated nor will I ask about the next book.
I do wonder where I could mention, in some subtle way, two grammatical errors in “The Wise Man’s Fear”.
    Chapter one hundred nine…page 714.
Being subtle is not one of my strong suits.
Ah, well…no doubt I’ll be ignored with the rest of the peasants.

I’m going to go ahead and post because I’ve been a long time reader and fan of this blog section, but never posted because well.. my grammar sucks. But if I can just add my voice to the masses above me (probably below after this gets posted) I really want to read Book 3. Might be another few years (God I hope not) but I will still wait as patiently as possible.

But just in case Pat does not know (since hardly anyone ever speaks about it) I am eagerly waiting for book 3. I know it will be fantastic and I have shared your books with at least 10 of my friends who are all now fans of your work.

I’m thinking I’ll quit while I’m ahead, love your books, and yes, I die a little inside every day I check and there are no book updates. But I’m just happy to know that one day there will be a book 3… as happy as I could be. (I’m hoping I don’t die before the book is released) that’s actually been a fear of mine as I go to sleep some nights…. okay!

Also, if anyone cares to know, Nightwish made a song called “Edema Ruh” and whenever I listen to that song, I decide to pick up your books to read again.

Just sent in my yearly donation. Partial through Brotherwise for the Call to adventure add-ons, and the rest through the main portal.

Glad to do my little bit to help, and glad to see the fundraiser is going well so far this year. Keep of the good work Wordbuilders team!
