Hey there everybody….
For those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you had a good one this weekend. For those of you who *don’t* celebrate it, or who celebrate it at a different time (I’m looking at you, Canada) I hope you had a good time doing whatever else you did.
Just a quick blog today for those of you who haven’t heard the news: My publisher is holding a photo contest, where you can win some of the new penance piece coins we designed with Shire Post to celebrate the launch of the new book.
They even made this fancy graphic for it and everything…

What’s even more interesting, I think they did this not realizing that I’ve done a couple photo contests over the years…
The contest will be running until December 14th. They’ll be handling it all of it on their end, which I’m glad of, as I have my hands full with a lot of stuff. But I’m looking forward to seeing all the pictures, and sharing some of my favorites here on the blog, too.
Oh… and for those of you who are looking to do some holiday shopping, Worldbuilders Market is running their annual holiday/black friday sale. There’s discounts on a lot of stuff, as well as a few new items, free shipping, etc…
I’ll share more details on the blog later, but I thought I’d throw y’all a heads up as sooner rather than later, as I don’t know how quickly some of the items in the store might sell out…
Here’s a link, if you’re interested.
Later space cowboys,
pat

I can’t find the words to express how much joy it brings me to come to this blog and find all this new posts.
I love your perfect posts. I loved them since the first one. As a long term fan of your work, I see them as precious little gemstones. I treasure them, and sometimes (not often, but sometimes) I’ll come back to read an old post again, and learn from it again, and have nostalgic joys and new ones too.
That said, I love your imperfect posts even more. As someone who is really fond of your person (
even though I never met you in person), I see them as a sign that you might be happier and healthier, and that is way more important than any gemstone or dragon hoard.
I wish you and you family a delightful week.
Love from a brazilian fan.

Exactly! Delightful imperfection.
where can i find more about telgum sets and embrils? looking to purchase them, see how they work, etc. perhaps i can make my own by collecting meaningful tidbits into a leather pouch? just looking for any guidance you can provide.
I’ve been meaning to write a blog about it for a while now… or maybe do a livestream where I talk about it.
I’ve put *way* too much thought into how it all works, (surprise) and I’ve actually gone so far as to start putting together some sets.
i look forward to learning more!!
Recently finding this blog, I had been avoiding this site because I was afraid of finding out things that may spoil my future reads but my mad dash to Wausau to grab a signed copy has made me less wary of venturing here. As you know, we’re covered in snow but I’ll figure out some picture to do. I hope someday to meet you and have you thrash me in Tak. You have built a beautiful world that opens my mind in new ways with every read through. Be well.
Dear Patrick,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my heartfelt appreciation for your latest book, which I found thoroughly captivating and immensely enjoyable. Your unique storytelling style and the depth of your characters never cease to amaze me.
As an avid reader and a big fan of your work, I am curious to know if there are any plans to publish this book in Russian. Many of your Russian-speaking fans, including myself, are eager to experience your new masterpiece in our native language.
Thank you once again for your incredible contribution to the world of literature. Your work continues to inspire and entertain readers around the globe.
Warm regards, Sergei
Ooh, fun. Time to brainstorm photo ideas.
Side note: went and checked out ‘The slow regard of silent things’ for a re-read and was delighted to find a homemade bookmark within. I suspect that bookmark is in its perfect place, and I just supplied the time.
Hey Patrick! I just want to say that I am a huge fan of your novels! Just realized I could comment on here lol. I doubt you’ll see this but-The first two books in the series are amazing, I have read them a few years ago and the slow regard of silent things is gorgeous! Just bought and read the new novella: The Narrow Road Between Desires. I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the most beautiful fantasy stories I’ve truly ever read and I mean that from my heart, good sir. It was a unique take from the older version you published in the Rouges short story collection. I really enjoyed all the new twists and things you added, really gave the story a new feel, some flare, felt like I got to know Bast’s character much more. Also. Loved the new thing about the fortune telling Embrils, very cool.
I just want to say to you that you inspire me. Your prose with words is unbelievable and the book you’ve written you should be extremely proud of sir. I am serious when I say this, it’s the best fantasy series I’ve ever read. I’m a young author at the age of 25 myself, trying to make my way into the writing world. Been writing books and reading since I was a boy. Your stories have inspired me to create my own fantasy series. I just published my fifth book in June this year. I mainly write historical fiction or fantasy, (medieval or steampunk, dark vampiric or gothic.) The book I just published is a true account of Captain Fitzroy’s HMS Beagle voyage in the 1830s, it’s from his perspective, sailing around South America, and exploring the odd friendship between him and Charles Darwin. the entire book covers his life from 1827 to 1865 and clocks in at 1500 pages. You inspired me to write and keep writing and I thank you.
A quick side note before I post this comment. I just want to say you seem to be a very kind person and a wonderful story teller. I know you have been going through some mental issues lately and I am sorry to hear that. Just know you are not alone. I’ve gone through depression myself and it’s crushing, it effects all of us adult or no. Your books helped me find a lighter place to set my feet. I understand that you’ve been getting a lot of flak online due to the charity stream or the fact that the third book isn’t published yet. I understand it takes time to write an amazing book. I’m sorry if you have been feeling pressure from it. I am certain it shall be a good one sir. It does not matter how long it may take, beautiful books take longer than others. It may be difficult but I believe in you. You are a fabulous writer and deserve what you have done, which is create a rich, lovely world full of lively characters. I know you don’t know me, but you seem like a good man. I’m not here to hound you about the release date of book three or try to pry secrets from you. I just like to let you know you have been a big inspiration for me since I was at the age of 15. For about 9 to 10 years. Thank you.
Just found your books at the age of 68. Arghhhh. Finished the first and starting the second. I pray to Gvothe’s gods you get book 3 out before I die.
I share this sentiment. I’ve been following this series for about 10 years now and still wait with bated breath to see where the third book takes the story. While I do understand things get in the way of our desired plans and unexpected changes may occur in one’s life, I still hope to see the third book sooner than later. While also hoping that Patrick Rothfuss maintains his health and happiness.
I just finished listening to the lightning tree, and I can’t express the amount of joy I experienced traveling along the whimsical and beautiful day with Bast in the town of Newarre. As I approached the ending, and then listened to your author note I was overcome and shed a few tears of happiness, and for context, I am a guy who rarely cries over anything. So much so, to the point that my wife often times comments about whether or not I can :-) this book and your authors note were so touching, I cannot wait to share with my kids when they become a little bit older, and I remain a huge fan of your work. Thank you for your wonderful storytelling!
Thank you for writing these books, I thoroughly enjoy them. I am reluctantly patient for The Doors of Stone. Cheers!
“Reluctantly patient” is such a wonderful turn of phrase. It describes that feeling well.
I can’t wait to read the new book!
Does anyone have any updates about the spanish/portuguese translation of The Narrow Road Between Desires?
Hi Pat!!!
I recently purchased the Last Unicorn and I was loving the amazing introduction, just falling in love with the writer’s words and looking forward to finding out who the heck it was so I could read their works, to find out it was you!!! It was such a beautiful introduction and my only regret is that I didn’t get to discover a new author who thinks and speaks so well to my heart, I’ve already read all of your works! But it also reminded me how much I enjoyed reading the forward to the Narrow Road. I love your blog and I hope you share an update soon! Love, Jo
Hello Pat!
I’m writing this after just finishing The Narrow Road Between Desires. It was a delightful read, no surprises there. I hope you’re doing okay and having fun with your kids.
After reading the authors endnote, I just want to say that I hope writing starts to feel kinder to you one day. I hope your perversion soup becomes spicy and delicious.
Name of the Wind was the book that got me back into reading as a teenager, and I’ve been filling my life with books ever since. No matter how much I read, there is a magic to your books that no one else has shown me.
Mr. Rothfuss when I say this it comes from a place of love. Stop being a coward. Short stories no matter the quality are the stories we want after the third book. Release your words bud. You can tinker with your words until… but we your fans are less picky. Just release your words!
We have just received the book in Spain.
I never thought I would cry with an author’s note. I won’t deny that I’m an easy tearjerker, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that it has touched my easy little heart.
Honestly, I love and hate to have read everything you’ve published, as I haven’t found anything to match it since I first opened The Name of the Wind.
You may see yourself as mediocre professionally, and you certainly are if we’re talking about times, but writing…I’ve never met anyone who writes like you.
Maybe this kind of words put you under even more pressure in the mental debate you must have to launch a book that is up to the mark, but I want to transmit to you a thousandth part of what you can transmit to us.
I look forward to reading you again soon and hopefully with a signed copy,
Rosa B.
Hi Pat, I’m writing from Chile, with your new book in my lap, just read your author note.
I’m convinced that the end is written. and this is a dramatic pause, like Dickens did.
I just wanted you to know that nothing will persuade me of not buying your books, not even you.
I will wait until you are ready to publish it.
It will be.
Hello! Question, does this book need to be read in any particular order? Or can I buy it and read it as a standalone book? Thanks!
I’m a little late, and hope you already read it, but I’ll still reply for other people to see, just in case someone has the same question: you don’t need any previous knowledge to enjoy this book, but having read “The name of the wind” and “The wise man’s fear” will allow you to make some connections and enjoy it even further!
Also, DON’T SKIP THE AUTHOR’S NOTE! Pat seems to think he’s doing a terrible work with the author’s notes he writes, but I don’t even have words to describe how much I love them. It’s humane and sincere and simple and flows like breeze coming from an open window, and if he keep saying he’s terrible at it, just ignore him, he’s awesome and perfection comes from the beauty of the imperfections.
Thanks!!!
Trying to determine how to phrase my thoughts… y’know what they say – trying to find the right words is as difficult as…. ;)
Jokes aside, just wanted to drop a line and say “Thank You!” for your stories, thoughts, outlook on things; basically, thank you for being You. You’ve brought such light and joy into my life and I thought it criminal to not mention it.
In the hopes this doesn’t stray into the unsettling feels, haha: if you ever want to get away and bask in the grey of Seattle, our home is always open to ya! All the best!
Sounds exciting! I’m definitely going to check out the photo contest. And those penance piece coins sound really cool. Thanks for the heads-up, and I hope everyone had a great weekend, regardless of how they spent it!
Hey Pat!
” O Estreito Caminho entre Desejos” is finally here in Brazil! <3
I'm reading it, and it is amazing!
So cool to have a closer look inside Bast's life. My friend is already waiting for me to finish it, so he can read too!
Thank you so much for you in the World!
Best regards
Are you still alive? I hope you’re OK.
Hi pat. Hope you’re well. It’s times like these I’d come here to seek solace from your musings, desperately holding onto the fact that there’s at one other person the cares about other people in the world. All the best.
Hope you’re OK. Over a year since we’ve heard from you here.
Hey Pat,
I just wanted to say I love your books so much. I’ve reread all of them at least five times. I started Name of the Wind when I was in Highschool and loved it so much. I hope your doing okay I don’t think we’ve heard from you since 2023. I just hope you know you still have fans out there who believe in you and support you:) I’m dying to hear that there is hope for book 3 but that’s because I selfishly love your work so much. But even so I hope you are doing well and getting some peace:):)
I’m 37. Been following you since the start. Last post 2023; I come back every so often to see if anything has changed. Did you ever play Bioshock? I assume you probably did. I remember the first time I played it, and that evocative little intro when you start up the game and the city logo goes from pristine to dilapidated as the light pans across it. It got me in a way that’s difficult to describe, a kind of everything falls apart motif that just felt unbearably sad. Looking back over the last decade, it’s hard not to feel the world turning in time with that light from the beginning of Bioshock, and I just wondered if perhaps you felt the same, these days, on maybe too many levels.
Pat, are you alive? Hope you’re well. We miss hearing from you. Over 2 years is a long time.
At first I wanted to curse you for not writing the 3rd book before my father passed
Then I thought perhaps you have life to live and lessons to learn before you can do the third book justice.
Now I am rereading the first two books and mourning familiar rhythms from my youth.
So… genuinely grateful
hello, just passing by…..
Hey Pat,
Always looking and hoping there is a new post…
Hooe you and your family are doing alright!? No matter what the Imternet says i believe you are one of the good guys and life is just messy and complicated…
Hope to hear/read from you here one day.
Take care and all the best
Florian
