Our Best Launch Ever: The First Four Days….

It’s day four of the fundraiser. And as I write this, we’ve just crested up over the top of 70,000 dollars. With our matching money, that means we’ve already raised over $140,000 and hit our $100K stretch goal: Launching my new website (a little earlier than we’d planned.)

At some point this weekend we’ll be flipping the switch on that so y’all can look around at the new coolness, kick the tires a little, and…. to be honest… probably see some things that aren’t working the way we’d intended. Think of this as a very solid beta launch…

More importantly, this blog is a reminder that this year I’m not posting everything that goes up in the fundraiser on this blog. Instead, the Worldbuilders Team has taken over a lot of the information distribution over on their website. You can follow their blogs right here, and keep an eye on the lottery library to see what’s being added to the fundraiser every day.

For example, on Tuesday they posted a ton of cool geekery from Badali Jewelry and Valyrian Steel.

badali-goodies

valyrian-steel-swag(Click on the photos and you can read all about them…)

Wednesday they featured a ton of signed books donated by authors….

author-donatedAnd today we’re putting in over 600 games into the lottery where every $10 dollars you donate gets you a chance to win. (And then gets doubled, too.)

games-day-1

So right now we’ve got nearly 900 prizes in the lottery worth over $33,000. And we’re only just barely four days into our festivities.

If you want to keep seeing everything as it comes it, keep an eye on the Worldbuilders website.

  • Twitch News:

As many of you already know, I’ll be on my Twitch chanel, streaming every night from 4pm-7pm CST to promote the charity.

So far, I’ve played the alpha version of Hero’s Song, only sucked a little in Overwatch, and performed a writing Q&A so intense it almost cost me my voice.

Future plans include inviting Sarah onto the stream for Date night (tonight), playing Witcher 3, and generally getting up to all sorts of hijinks. Hell, things might actually escalate to the point of full-blown shenanigans by early next week.

If you want to be part of that, you can sign up for notifications for when I start streaming.

Simply go to my twitch channel and click “Follow” then turn on notifications.

Um… Amanda? Can you tuck in a graphic to show them what I’m talking about?

followpat

notifyme

(Here you go, Boss.)

Thanks much Amanda, that’s very… high tech of you. um… maybe not pick a screencap where I look quite so dumb next time?

We’re going to start letting people vote on what I do during each stream as soon as we have the technology to do that. Which is sure to lead to absolute madness. You don’t want to miss the madness, do you?

With that in mind, any ideas for fun things you’d like to see on the stream? Share them in the comments below…

Oh, and also, I’m just going to put a link to the donation page here.

And a link to all our current auctions here.

I’m sure you can figure out what to do with those…

Beautiful Jewelry from Badali

Well folks, we’ve just finished our third full day of Worldbuilders, and we’ve already raised over $75,000. I feel pretty good about that.

That means we’ve already unlocked our first two stretch goals.

You should really check them out, then share them around with the rest of the world. Your friends on social media will thank you for it.

My first stretch goal unlocks at $100K (it involves Tom Bombadil) and there are many more. There’s a full list in the Hub Blog. Or you can do what I do, and obsessively click the refresh button on the Worldbuilders Page, watching the donation totals slowly rise. Trying to use the power of your mind to *make* the totals rise. WILLING them to grow.

Or, y’know, you could go and donate on our team page. Scientific studies have shown that that makes our donation totals go up too.

And now, today’s donations….

* * *

Badali Jewelry has been with Worldbuilders for a long time. And they’ve been with me, personally for even longer. They were my very first company to ever approach me for a licencing agreement based on my books. Since then they’ve produced truly marvelous work set in my world, including the Eolian talent pipes, Denna’s ring, and the Iron Wheel.

They have a lot of great stuff, including a bunch of officially licensed jewelry from some of the biggest fantasy series around, like the Dresden Files, Iron Druid, Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, and much more.

This year they’re helping Worldbuilders in two ways. The first is….

For the duration of the Fundraiser, if you buy anything at all on their website with that code:

~ You get $10 off your shipping costs.
~ 10% of the money goes directly to Worldbuilders

Secondarily, they’ve given us a lovely array of jewelry we’re auctioning off.

Arkenstone

Just like the real Arkenstone, the colors change based on the light, and it comes in a swank little wooden chest with a black velvet pillow.

They really go the extra mile to make their items collectible and true to the story. If you want to get your hands on the Arkenstone with all the money coming to Worldbuilders, grab it right here.

  • Elessar the Elfstone Brooch from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein.

Elessar

This piece is so new, Badali hasn’t even added it to their online store yet.

It was given to Aragorn by Galadriel, and was intended to be a sign of acceptance of Aragorn’s future as the rightful heir of Gondor.

Like we said, Badali doesn’t mess around. Grab it here.

  • Khuzdul Dwarven Battle Axe Necklace from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein.

Khuzdul

This intricate battle axe features the Khuzdul battle cry: “Baruk Khazâd!  Khazâd ai-mênu!” The translation is: “Axes of the Dwarves!  The Dwarves are upon you!”

It’s beautifully detailed work, and it can be yours if you bid here.

  • Asha’man Dragon Pin from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Sterling Silver.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hardcore Wheel of Time geeks will appreciate this pin. The design was approved by Robert Jordan. It was awarded when men were promoted to the level of full Asha’man, and worn on the right collar of their black coats.

If you want this pin to show off your geek cred, head over here and bid on it.

  • The Wheel of Time Necklace from The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Sterling Silver.

Wheel of Time

Inspired from the pages of The Wheel of Time ® series by Robert Jordan comes The Wheel of Time Necklace, skillfully crafted in sterling silver.

The Wheel of Time, also call the Snake-Wheel™, is the iconic image of the best seller novels by Robert Jordan.  The Wheel symbolizes the ever turning and reoccurring nature of time.  All things that happen have happened before and will happen again.  The necklace features the Great Serpent™ entwined through the wheel forming an infinity symbol, reiterating the eternal nature of the past, present and future.  The Great Serpent is also a symbol for time and eternity. Bid on it here.

New Moon

ElfQuest has been running for ages (since 1978), and is the reason a lot of the authors you read these days got into fantasy.

Here you can have a pin made to replicate a famous blade from the series, carried by Cutter Kinseeker as the eleventh leader of the Wolfriders. If you’re a geek for that sort of thing, you should bid on it over here.

  • Atticus’s Necklace from the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne.

Atticus

The Iron Druid Chronicles are a big favorite with the Worldbuilders Team. Nicole, Brett, and Amanda have all devoured them. What’s more, Kevin Hearne has been a great supporter of Worldbuilders for years. So it’s nice to see the jewelry from his books getting the Badali Treatment.

This is Atticus’s iron amulet with all of its charms that he uses for protection and magic. We can’t guarantee it will grant you the same powers, but if you happen to be a druid you could probably make use of it. Bid on it over here.

  • Granuaile’s Iron Amulet Pendant from the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne.

Grannuaile

Granuaile’s iron amulet is less intricate than Atticus’s, but just as cool in its own right. For those of you who want to play more of the stealth-geek card, this is a great option.

If you want to bid on it, head over here.

  • Bob the Skull Pendant from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Sterling Silver.

Bob the Skull

I love the Dresden Files with a fierce love. And Bob is definitely a factor in that love.

Far-reaching knowledge of the arcane and sardonic wit not guaranteed with purchase. Bid over here for the chance anyway.

  • Harry Dresden Shield Bracelet from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Sterling Silver.

Shield Bracelet

The chance to have Dresden’s shield bracelet almost broke Amanda when it first came out. And honestly, I thought that was a pretty reasonable reaction. Who doesn’t want to look as badass as Harry Dresden, shaking this bracelet out and holding up their left hand with all the confidence that someone isn’t going to shoot a flamethrower at your and pretty much melt your entire hand off?

Using this bracelet to ward off magical attacks requires knowledge that Badali and Worldbuilders can’t provide. That said, owning it will probably raise your geeky herd rank. Bid here.

Aon Omi

This is one of the pendants used in Elantris to perform magic. This one in particular is the symbol for Love, and was exchanged at a wedding in the novel.

We can’t promise any particular results on that front, but you can get your hands on it right here.

Jeseh Glyph

The syntax-free glyphs from Stormlight Archive were begging to be made into jewelry, and Badali was all too happy to comply. There are many glyphs available, but this one in particular is for Jeseh.

If you want this kind of protection, you can bid on it over here.

Oathbringer Shardblade

The idea behind the Shardblades is seriously cool. They’re incredibly treasured and rare, and can cut easily through any inanimate object, but when passing through living flesh it cuts through the soul rather than the body.

Seriously. This pendant of awesome can be yours if you bid on it over here.

  • Mistborn Vial Necklace with both an Atium Vial and a Mistborn Mixture Vial from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson.

Atium & Mistborn Vial

This necklace comes with two different vials of Mistborn Metals, so you’re getting some sweet variety.

It includes one vial of the Mistborn Mixture (a mix of the 8 basic Allomantic metals) and a vial containing Atium, one of the fourteen known Allomantic metals from the Mistborn universe.  The vials can be swapped out at your whim. If you want it, bid early and often over here.

 * * *

Don’t forget that anything you buy on Badali’s Website between now and the end of the fundraiser with code WBLD14 gets you $10 off shipping and gives Worldbuilders 10% of the sale.

And this link will take you a page where you can check out all the auctions we’re currently running. We’ve got more than just jewelery up for grabs, and you don’t want to miss out.

The Opposite of Black Friday….

This is a Worldbuilders Blog.

So the holiday shopping season is fast approaching. Later this week, corporations all over the US are going to pull every trick in the book to sell you crap. There will be madness in the stores. People will behave badly. There will be news stories about people getting hospitalized while trying to buy some plastic toy made in a third world country.

And you know, I get it. I want to buy my little boy every cute little thing I see in the store. Last year I bought him a plastic Thomas the Tank Engine that he can scoot around on. And he loves it.

But you know what else he loves? The cardboard poster tube I pulled out of the garbage at Worldbuilders central. I brought that home, and you know what he did? He slid it over his arm and said, “I have a robot arm! I can use it to freeze you! fpshhhhh! You’re a statue!”

I’m not going to say that he doesn’t play with Thomas anymore, because he does. But he plays with the tube just as much. He freezes me and Sarah with it, then thaws us out again. It’s a telescope. You can roll marbles through it. It’s a trumpet. It’s everything a little boy needs.

And it was free. Thomas cost me 95 bucks. I feel guilty about that sometimes. If I’d given that 95 bucks to Heifer, it would have paid for a lot of chickens. It means a lot of other little kids would be eating eggs right now. 95 bucks is almost a whole goat.

Every time I hear someone mention Black Friday, I cringe a little. And I think “Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do something better than this?”

That’s part of the reason we’re trying something new at Worldbuilders this year. We’ve formed some official partnerships with a couple geek-centric businesses. And they’re doing two things.

1. They’ve donated cool stuff that you can go and buy in The Tinker’s Packs.

2. If you go buy some stuff from them, (carefully following the directions laid out below) they will give a percentage of that sale to us here at Worldbuilders.

Let me just jump right in and show you how cool they are…

The folks at Badali made the Talent Pipes that we’ve been selling in The Tinker’s Packs for years now. They turned out amazingly well, and I’ve actually seen people wearing them at conventions and book signings.

But recently, Badali has recently made a few other pieces jewelry based on my books.

The first of these is Denna’s Ring:

I have to tell you, they worked with me for a *long* time on this. Over the course of a year, they developed at least 6 different prototypes that I, like the precious little princess I am, looked at and said, “That’s beautiful, but it’s not quite right. Could we….?”

And then we’d chat about it, and they’d go make another version of the ring.

The truly impressive thing is that at no point did they stab me in the neck for being so freakishly obsessive about the design. They worked with me on the type of stone, on the style of the ring. On the feel of it. And, of course, on the knot work involved.

If you want to see more pictures of it, you can see them on Badali’s site over here.

The other thing that came out *very* recently is the Iron Wheel pendant:

It’s modeled after the one Chronicler wears. If you look closely, you’ll see the names of Tehlu’s angels written around the edge.

The coolest thing in my opinion? Badali went out of their way to find someone who would cast it in iron. This doesn’t happen much, because, y’know, nobody with any sense makes iron jewelry. But when I stressed that it really should BE iron, not just iron-ish. They went the extra mile and made it happen.

Best of all, Badali doesn’t just do jewelry from my books.  They have something for just about every kind of geek out there. Whether you’re into Celtic or Cthulian. Sanderson or Tolkien, they’ve got something for you.

And here’s the best part, for the duration of our fundraiser, Badali is donating 10% of the sales on their site to Worldbuilders if you use the following coupon codes.

Not only will some of your money go to make the world a better place, but you’ll also get free USPS Priority Mail shipping for US customers and $9.00 off shipping for international customers.

The coupon code is WBLDUSA in the United States.

Non-US Orders should use coupon code WBLDINT.

Amanda’s Edit: Congratulations, everyone, we broke Badali’s website this morning!  If you weren’t able to use the coupon code, email janelle [squiggly-at-thinger] badalijewelry.com and she’ll sort it out for you to be sure you get your free/discounted shipping, and to be sure the 10% goes to Worldbuilders.

Do you folks remember the Bear Steins from last year? We put them up in the store, and they sold out inside of a day.

Click to see the many faces of Sea Bear Pots…

This year, Sea Bear joined forces with John Hill (Tree on the Hill Pottery) and Katherine Taylor (Front Room Clay) to create Three Marks Pottery Shoppe.  All three of these fine pottery-ists have agreed to have a super-hero team-up and sell pottery out of their Etsy shop to help benefit Worldbuilders.

And you know what? You don’t need a coupon code for this one. Because they’ve told us that 25% of all sales from their store will go straight to Worldbuilders.

Or, if you prefer, you can head over and buy some of their awesome bear steins straight from The Tinker’s Packs. They’re the perfect gift for the person in your life that wants to drink like a bad-ass Viking.

The same blog that talked about the Bear Steins last year also talked about the wonderful Jayne Hats created by Amanda Swenson.

This year, she’s donated even more handmade Jayne Hats to The Tinker’s Packs.

What’s more, if you buy anything on her Etsy store, Almost Wicked Stitcher, 20% of sales will go to Worldbuilders through the end of the fundraiser.

You can buy all manner of coolness there, including what she’s lovingly termed a Diabeetus Stache.  We’ve got one here at the office, and my lovely assistant Amanda here is particularly fond of it.

I posted a blog about this a while back, but I wanted to remind all of you that there’s a new, paperback edition of The Princess and Mr. Whiffle coming out from Sea Lion Books, from which 15%, then 20%, then 25% of the proceeds will come to Worldbuilders, depending on how many they sell.

This version and a color-cover limited edition are both for sale over at Sea Lion’s website.

Some people who ordered their books a couple weeks ago e-mailed to ask why they hadn’t gotten their books yet. It turns out Sea Lion’s printer was hit by Hurricane Sandy, so they had to start printing over at a whole new facility. It’s set back their timeline a bit, but don’t worry, your books are still coming….

We’ve also got some great stuff going on in our own store.  We’ve already mentioned the Bear Steins and the Jayne Hats, but we also just got a brand-new shirt in.

A couple months back, a fan named Nate designed an awesome logo for Greysdale Mead, the drink of all discerning troupers.

We used it to make a truly awesome shirt.

To make room for the Greysdale Mead shirt, we’re clearing out some of our older shirts. We’re selling off our remaining stock of the Worldbuilders shirts, (modeled below by beautiful assistant Kat) and the Denner Fishing t-shirt, (modeled by the ever-lovely Nicole.)

Just so you know, there are some guys that work for me too. But the ladies are the ones that like posing for t-shirt pictures.

After these are gone, we aren’t going to be printing any more. So if you want one you’d better order now.

  • 2013 Fantasy Calendar

Lastly, don’t forget that we’ve got the 2013 Pin-Up Calendars available too. We just launched a new sale on them to make it easier to buy them as gifts. So right now if you use the offer code BUYTHREE, you can get 3 calendars for $50. You save ten bucks and make some geeks in your life very happy.

And I’ve said it before folks, but I’ll say it again. Every penny you spend in The Tinker’s Packs goes to Worldbuilders. So you can buy some gifts and get a big warm fuzzy at the same time.

*     *     *

Remember, for every 10 dollars you donate on our Team Page, you get a chance to win these books and many more.

If you’d like to see all the auctions Worldbuilders is currently running, you can find them over here.

Miscellaneous Auctions

This is a Worldbuilders blog.

Okay. Today we’ve got stuff up for auction that, doesn’t really fit into any of the other blogs.

Among other things, we’ve got limited edition art from Neil Gaiman and Vincent Chong, signed bookplates from Pratchett and Robert Jordan, and the Arkenstone.

Yeah. Seriously. The Arkenstone.

The folks at Badali Jewelry, the folks that created the Eolian’s talent pipes for me, have been officially licensed by Middle-earth Enterprises to create a replica of the Arkenstone of Thrain.

Your Akenstone replica is made of fine K9 Crystal treated with an Aurora Borealis plating to give the stone a magical glow. The stone is nestled on a black velvet pillow inside a Dwarven crafted chest. The runes on the outside of the chest read Arkenstone, written in the same Dwarvish runes found on Thorin’s Map.

Many thanks to Badali Jewelry for this cool donation.

You can bid on this Arkenstone replica here.

Still More Signed Books

This is a Worldbuilders blog.

Today we have another batch of books donated by the authors themselves.

Most of them, as always, are going into the general lottery. But we’re auctioning off a few treasures at the bottom of the list as well… So make sure to check those out, too.

  • One first edition hardcover set of Tome of the Undergates and Black Halo by Sam Sykes. Signed by the author.

Pat’s Note: I met Sam Sykes at Worldcon this year, and we spent the better part of two hours having an in-depth conversation about… things. Things which I realize now I really shouldn’t mention in a charity blog.

Suffice to say that it was a refreshingly deviant conversation. I had a great time, though we probably really freaked out the people sitting nearby….

“Sam Sykes is the Hot Young Turk of fantastic fiction.” – James A. Owen

  • One set of Shadowmarch: Shadowmarch, Shadowplay, Shadowrise, and Shadowheart and The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams. All books signed by the author.

“Packed with mind-blowing surprises… a brilliantly engaging fantasy.” – SFX

One set of 100 Stories for Haiti and 100 Stories for Queensland by Robert J. McCarter. Signed by Robert J. McCarter.

“One hundred beautiful stories. Our stories. When so much was lost or destroyed, this was created. That’s something that can never recede or wash away.” Kate Eltham, CEO of The Queensland Writers Centre

  • Two sets of Signing Their Lives Away: The Fame and Misfortune of the Men Who Signed The United States Constitution and The Fame and Misfortune of the Men Who Signed The Declaration of Independence by Denise Kiernan and Joseph D’Agnese. Signed by the authors.

“Readers will delight as they discover just which signer “was the first to die,” “slept in caves,” “had the worst penmanship,” and “went broke on shady land deals.” School Library Journal Starred Review

  • Two hardcover copies of Blockhead: the Life of Fibonacci by Joseph D’Agnese. Signed by the author.

“This lighthearted introduction to Fibonacci’s ideas will inspire young math lovers and perhaps point them toward more scholarly explorations.” – School Library Journal.

  • One set of The Iron Druid Chronicles: Hounded, Hexed and Hammered by Kevin Hearne. Signed by the author.

“A page-turning and often laugh-out-loud funny caper through a mix of the modern and the mythic.” – Ari Marmell

“It’s the best kind of story… and Susan M. MacDonald is the best kind of writer… You can hardly stand to put the book aside until you’ve finished.” – Orson Scott Card, author of Ender’s Game

  • One set of ARCS of The Adamantine Palace, The King of the Crags and The Order of the Scales by Stephen Deas. Includes signed postcard from the author.

“A fast, sharp, ruthless read.” – Joe Abercrombie

  • Two copies of Shuffled Off: A Ghost’s Memoir by Robert J McCarter. Signed by the author.

Shuffled Off is a first-person ghost story that follows JJ into the afterlife. As one reviewer put it: ” A fast paced enjoyable reading experience that held my attention to the very end and left me hoping for a sequel. Highly recommended!”

  • Two copies of Geek Dad by Ken Denmead. Signed by the author.

Pat’s Note: I really love this book. I’ve already ordered myself a copy, as I’m hoping to bring up Oot so he’s a proper Geek.

Supergeek and father of two, Ken Denmead is an engineer and editor of the incredibly popular GeekDad blog on wired.com.  Ken has created the ultimate, idea-packed guide guaranteed to help dads and kids alike enjoy the magic of playtime together and tap into the infinite possibility of their imagination.

Pat’s Note: If you click to embiggen the above picture, you will see that the blurb on the front of the book is mine. Go on. Click it and take a look.

I have to tell y’all, having my blurb on the front of this book is probably one of the cooler things that’s ever happened to me as a published author.

It’s also rather baffling though. Helping promote The Last Unicorn is like being asked to act as a character reference for St. Francis Assisi….

The Last Unicorn is the best I have ever read. You need to read it. If you’ve already read it, you need to it again.” – Patrick Rothfuss

*     *     *

And now the auctions:

  • AUCTION: Signed First Edition hardcover of The Wooden Man by Harry Connolly. Includes ghost knife from the author.

Pat’s Note: Harry Connolly sent us two books, and several people e-mailed us, pleading that we put one of them up in an auction. Apparently he doesn’t do many appearances, so it’s really hard to get hold of his signature.

So we’re auctioning one off. Never let it be said that we ignored the will of the people.

“Excellent reading… a truly dark and sinister world, delicious tension and suspense, violence so gritty you’ll get something in your eye just reading it.” – Jim Butcher

You can bid on this book over here.

  • AUCTION: Signed hardcover of The Onion: Our Front Page 1988 – 2008. Signed by the Onion Staff.

Pat’s Note: I was a fan of the Onion back before any of you even knew who they were. Because I grew up in Madison, where the Onion got its start.

About a year back, I met up with some of the Onion staff at a convention in Madison, and I had a good old fashioned geek out, because I’ve been reading their stuff since high school. It turns out they’d read my book, and we quickly decided to be Best Friends Forever.

This book is signed by a ton of the lovely folks on the Onion staff. Not just one or two of them, either. Check it out:

That’s a lot of satirical mojo right there….

You can check out the option and place your bids over here.

  • AUCTION: signed, leather-bound copies of The Gathering Storm and Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson with Wheel of Time jewelry.

These gorgeous gold-lettered books are leather-bound and designated “S” out of 26 lettered copies. The books come in their own matching leather slipcase, feature a facimilie of Robert Jordan’s signature, and are signed by Brandon Sanderson.

In addition to these stunning best-selling books, this auction includes three lovely pieces of jewelry inspired by Jordan’s series: an Asha’man Dragon Pin, a Dedicated Sword Pin, and a Great Serpent Ring.

We are very grateful to Brandon Sanderson for his donation of these rare books, and to the folks at Badali  for makinc things even sweeter with the addition of the jewelry.

To see more pictures of these gorgeous books, or to place a bid on the auction, click here.

*     *     *

Remember, for every 10 dollars you donate on our Team Page, you get a chance to win these books and many, many more.

Even better, if you chip in before February 7th of 2012, Worldbuilders will match 50% of your donation. So you’re making the world a better place by half again as much.

San Diego 2011: Wednesday

Okay. ComicCon was cool this year, and people have been asking for details.

So here they are.

*     *     *

As I mentioned earlier, my trip to comic-con had a pretty rocky start.

This seems to be a theme of ComicCon for me. My first trip to ComicCon was fraught with peril, as mentioned in this comic by Greg Dean. While my second trip had a delayed flight that left me stranded in Chicago for a night.

Luckily, this year I had Valerie to help me out, so I made it to the con without too much stress. Though I did only get about an hour and a half of sleep Tuesday night.

Wednesday:

  • 11:00 – Nap.

I arrive in San Diego, find my hotel, and promptly fall asleep. The people at the hotel seem a little confused when I ask them for a 3:00 wake up call.

“You want us to wake you up at 3:00 AM tomorrow morning?” they say.

“No.” I say. “3:00 this afternoon. Four hours from now.”

Eventually they catch on, but I feel like they’re judging me. And I guess that’s fair. When the first thing I do at the convention is take a nap, I am officially old.

The fact remains that it was a delicious nap. I wake up refreshed and ready to get my geek on.

  • 4:00 – Blog.

Because I didn’t have the chance the night before, I decide to post a blog telling everyone about the talent pipes Badali Jewelry is making based on my books.

(This one is shown with black antiquing)

I’ve been approached by various people over these last couple years who want to do merchandising. Most of the time I’ve replied with a polite, “Thank you, no.”

The biggest reason is that I don’t want to feel like a great big whore. I don’t want to churn out a bunch of gimmicky merch just to make some extra money. That sort of thing has always struck me as being tacky, if not downright unethical. It seems like a betrayal of trust, like taking advantage of my readers.

But Badali Jewelry does wonderful work. They hold the jewelry licenses for several big-name geek properties (LOTR and Wheel of Time, just to name a few.) What’s more, they’re actually fans of my books. They’re proper geeks, and their love for what they do shows in their work. I trusted them enough to let them beta read The Wise Man’s Fear, and that says a lot right there.

Anyway, the pipes turned out great. That’s the moral of the story here. You’ll be seeing some more stuff from them before too long.

  • 5:00 – Crash.

After banging out  quick blog on the computer in the hotel lobby, I head to the convention center. I end up standing next to Seth Green while waiting for a stoplight to change. I try to think of a way to say, “Your stuff is awesome” that doesn’t sound gushy and fanboy, but I can’t think of anything. So I settle on a companionable silence instead.

Despite the long line, getting my badge is a remarkably painless process. I’m just putting the program book in my backpack when my phone rings.

I open it up. “Hello?”

Hey,” Valerie says. “It’s Valerie.

“I know,” I say. “Your text is green. What’s up?”

Badali’s website is down. A bunch of people posted comments about it.

“Really?” I say. “When did it go down?”

About twenty minutes after you posted the link on your blog.

My first reaction was to feel pretty cool. My second reaction was terrible guilt. I thank Valerie and give my contact at Badali a call. They’re only a couple hundred feet away, but I don’t have an exhibitor badge, so I can’t go into the hall until 6:00.

“Janelle?” I say as soon as she picks up. “I’m sorry. I think I broke your stuff.”

“What?”

“I posted up a link to the talent pipes on my blog. But I think the traffic crashed your website.”

“Wow,” she says. A pause. “That’s kinda awesome!”

A wave of relief fills me, and I’m no longer overwhelmed with guilt. “I know!” I say. “I feel like Neil Gaiman!”

  • 5:30 – First contact.

I get off the phone and finish putting some stuff away into my backpack. I sling it over one shoulder and look around, wondering how I’m going to kill half an hour until the hall opens up for preview night.

A pretty young Asian woman makes eye contact with me. She cocks her head to one side. “Are you Patrick Rothfuss?” she asks.

“I am,” I say.

She looks hesitant, then says, “Can I have a hug?”

“Absolutely,” I say.

And we hug.

I decide that this is probably going to be a pretty good convention.

  • 6:00 – On the Floor.

For those of you that don’t know much about San Diego ComicCon, let me explain. Wednesday night from 6:00-9:00 is preview night. Only people with 4-day passes can get in.

This makes it a great time to meet people in the exhibit hall. Not only is the place relatively uncrowded, but all the exhibitors are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. (Both literally and/or figuratively, depending on the booth.)

I wander around pretty aimlessly at first. But luck takes me past Donato’s booth, and I get to say howdy to him. He’s a hell of a nice guy, to say nothing of the fact that he’s amazing artist. We chat for a bit, and I thank him for the donation of some prints he made to Worldbuilders this year. (You’ll be seeing those in the Tinker’s Packs before too long.)

I swing by Jason Palmer’s booth too, but he’s not at the con yet. I shrug it off, knowing that I’ll have plenty of time to stop back later in the con.

Next I stumble onto a booth where the cast of the Guild is doing a signing. The con is barely half an hour old, and they already have a huge line. I consider stopping to say hello to Felicia and Sandeep, but even though they’re not signing yet, I can tell the cast is kinda hanging out together. Besides, Felicia and Sandeep are chatting with some guy and I don’t want to barge into their conversation.

I’m also vaguely anxious that if I run into them 30 minutes into the convention, I’ll look like I’m stalking them. Which I’m not. Not at the current moment, that is.

I decide to leave them to their throng of adoring fans and see what else the floor has to offer.

I swing by the Penny Arcade booth, where I say howdy to Mike and Jerry. I wrote an intro for their most recent anthology, and hadn’t had a chance to see it in the real world yet.

Jerry comes out from the booth and gives me a hug. “We said terrible things,” he says.

At first, I have no idea what he’s talking about. Then I realize he’s probably referring to the comic they did a while back, and the podcast where they talked about the book in frank terms, and, well… mocked me.

Honestly, I’m a little flabbergasted. “I don’t know what it’s like where you live,” I say. “But where I come from, mocking is how we express love.”

And it’s true. There’s a world of difference between snarkery, loving satire, and full-blown vitriolic excoriation. Penny Arcade does all of these things, and does them well, but I can tell the difference.

After establishing that we’re all still best friends, I wander by Mysterious Galaxy’s booth, where it turns out they’re selling copies of Ghost Story even though the book technically wasn’t going to be released for days yet.

Needless to say, I bought a copy and clutched it lovingly.

“Is Butcher going to be here at the con?” I ask the people at the booth.

They tell me he is.

This is good news. I’ve read all the Dresden Files books at least twice, many of them three or four times. I’m a huge fan and I’ve been hoping to meet Butcher for years.

So Wednesday was full of win. A great way to start the convention. Best of all, I’d managed to make it through the whole thing without committing any huge social gaffs and making an ass of myself.

But it was only Wednesday, I still had four days of convention left….

A hurried update

So all the powers of creation have conspired to keep me from attending ComicCon. Last night I got an automated call from Delta telling me, “Hello, your flight is canceled. Yeah. Would you like a later flight? Oh, and by the way would you like a Skymiles Credit Card?”

Then a storm hit Stevens Point like the wrath of an angry god, knocking out all the power in central Wisconsin.

So I used my computer’s battery backup to charge my cell phone. Then I called Delta and cursed them unto their seventh generation. I told them that no, I don’t want their fucking credit card, and when I book a flight for 7:00 in the morning on a particular day, I have certain expectations from them. I expect, for example, a plane to be present. To fucking fly me where I’ve paid money to go. And no, goddammit, I really don’t want a credit card. I want a brick that I will throw through your window late at night.

Then I called my assistant and she graciously agreed to drive me to Minneapolis so I could catch my 9:30 connecting flight. It wasn’t that bad, we only had to start driving at around 3:30 in the morning….

So I packed my bags by candle light, the storm howling angrily outside. I’m not even kidding. It was a real adventure. High drama. Carmina Burana was playing in the background.

Anyway, the result was that I didn’t get to write the blog I really wanted to last night. The blog where I made the big announcement that Badali Jewlery has made some jewelry based on my books.

Specifically, they’ve made talent pipes. And they are awesome.

Seriously.

Unfortunately, I’m writing up this blog on a decrepit hotel computer. I don’t have any of my pictures available to me. I can’t cut and paste. The Control keys don’t seem to work. So all I can do is beg you to click the above link and bask in the glory of the excellent work they’ve done.

They’re also having a sale at comic-con tonight, so if you stop by their booth here at Comic Con on preview night (tonight), you can buy a pair for 30% off….

I’m sorry. I wish I could do this with the fanfare it deserves, but I’m kinda tech-neutered right now.

Lastly, I’d like to point y’all in the direction of Wootstock. They’re doing a show in San Diego this Thursday night. Google it up. It’s going to be a fun time.

I also heard a rumor that this show might have something extra in it…. (he said mysteriously.)

That’s all for now, folks.
