A hurried update

So all the powers of creation have conspired to keep me from attending ComicCon. Last night I got an automated call from Delta telling me, “Hello, your flight is canceled. Yeah. Would you like a later flight? Oh, and by the way would you like a Skymiles Credit Card?”

Then a storm hit Stevens Point like the wrath of an angry god, knocking out all the power in central Wisconsin.

So I used my computer’s battery backup to charge my cell phone. Then I called Delta and cursed them unto their seventh generation. I told them that no, I don’t want their fucking credit card, and when I book a flight for 7:00 in the morning on a particular day, I have certain expectations from them. I expect, for example, a plane to be present. To fucking fly me where I’ve paid money to go. And no, goddammit, I really don’t want a credit card. I want a brick that I will throw through your window late at night.

Then I called my assistant and she graciously agreed to drive me to Minneapolis so I could catch my 9:30 connecting flight. It wasn’t that bad, we only had to start driving at around 3:30 in the morning….

So I packed my bags by candle light, the storm howling angrily outside. I’m not even kidding. It was a real adventure. High drama. Carmina Burana was playing in the background.

Anyway, the result was that I didn’t get to write the blog I really wanted to last night. The blog where I made the big announcement that Badali Jewlery has made some jewelry based on my books.

Specifically, they’ve made talent pipes. And they are awesome.

Seriously.

Unfortunately, I’m writing up this blog on a decrepit hotel computer. I don’t have any of my pictures available to me. I can’t cut and paste. The Control keys don’t seem to work. So all I can do is beg you to click the above link and bask in the glory of the excellent work they’ve done.

They’re also having a sale at comic-con tonight, so if you stop by their booth here at Comic Con on preview night (tonight), you can buy a pair for 30% off….

I’m sorry. I wish I could do this with the fanfare it deserves, but I’m kinda tech-neutered right now.

Lastly, I’d like to point y’all in the direction of Wootstock. They’re doing a show in San Diego this Thursday night. Google it up. It’s going to be a fun time.

I also heard a rumor that this show might have something extra in it…. (he said mysteriously.)

That’s all for now, folks.

Oooooh! I would love some talent pipes, but would feel guilty about getting them without a consensus at the Eolian. ^_^

    But so pretty…. *sigh*

Agreed! They are quite lovely, but I would love a way to actually earn my pipes.

So very tempting… I hope they come up with some other spiffy jewelry!

Have you ever read the small print on a ticket? My understanding is that they don’t even guarantee you a plane ride, only that they’ll get you from point A to point B eventually even if they have to stick you on a bus.

DL should have offered to put you on another mainline airline (US, UA, AA……) on any airport within an hour’s circumference from CWA. For example, American has a 6:40a flight through Chicago to SAN out of MKE…… and that’s only 70 miles from CWA. :o( I’m sorry it was such a hassle. If you still have my number from your Europe trip before Oot was born, please feel free to call me if you are ever in that situation again.

    Glad you made it safely!!!!

My friends are already talking about getting me a set of pipes. I just wonder if Pat liked the Cd I gave him while he was in L.A. That would tell me if I could have passed muster at the Eolian or not.

The Eolian Talent Pipes™ Pins are great. (And they have slightly modified my mental image of what the talent pipes look like.)

Poor Patrick and his plane problems. I grieve and hope no more failures of flight befall you.

One should not start a story with weather. Patrick waited to the second paragraph of the blog entry to bring it up. Good job.

Ow boy, I wouldn’t want to be on those airliners’ shoes… You sound quite.. convincing, even afterwards in a blog to your fans. But you are absolutely right of course, especially when they just want to sell you this stupid creditcard all the time when all you want is to… get somewhere, you know, the thing airliners were supossed to do since the beginning of commercial airtravel.

My wife and I went to Scotland last month – 4 flights total and 3 were delayed 1.5 hours or more and the last connection was cancelled. We ended up in Newark airport (the asshole of America) for about 9 hours. I can sympathize with your plight. My wife would love the pipes necklace…. anniversary gift idea supreme!

After 5 years in the pilot seat, I have almost no patience for commercial airlines anymore. That said, the storm you mentioned was probably why Delta wouldn’t land their plane in Stevens Point. Nevertheless, they should have offered you something so you could make it to your connecting flight. The credit card bullshit just adds insult to injury.

This blog post is just another reason why I love Patrick Rothfuss.

“I have certain expectations from them. I expect, for example, a plane to be present. To fucking fly me where I’ve paid money to go. And no, goddammit, I really don’t want a credit card. I want a brick that I will throw through your window late at your night.”

There’s just a certain type of realism that one comes to expect when reading anything written by Patrick Rothfuss. LOL Hell even his blog post are a highly interesting read!

Thank you for posting this, it put a smile on my face.

Oh lovely pipes! But like others have said, I’d feel guilty about wearing something I haven’t earned. I’m trying to think of what else they could make that I could wear.

Oh, and good luck with surviving ComicCon. 125,00 people sounds more like an endurance contest than a convention to me. But then I’m one who considers several thousand at WorldCon to be a big convention.

I wish I could do this with the fanfaire it deserves, but I’m kinda tech-nutered right now.

tech-neutered, or tech-nuttered? I suspect you meant neutered, but I actually like the connotation of being tech-nuttered! Then again, I’ve always been most fond of unintentional neologisms… like fanfaire! (Which, I suspect, is simply a word your subconscious self coined to refer to conventions)… ;)

Good luck in your travels and at the con – hopefully you weren’t too inconvenienced once you got to MSP!

Oh man I would love to get those pipes…

But the thing is I want to get the white gold, not the silver as the silver will tarnish over time.

Damn it why does why gold have to be so expensive!?

Well I’ll get it one day…some day. But it is pretty cool.

And Pat, take care of yourself, be careful man. :)

Delta is EVIL. They once caused me to miss the first 3 days of a cruise because they overbooked our flight. Then they tried to blame it on us for not getting there early enough (my best friend had locked the keys to my car in my trunk, but we were still there an hour before the flight was supposed to leave). Someone working at the Continental desk was even trying to speak to the Delta people on our behalf. It wasn’t until our travel agent’s office finally opened and were able to call that we managed to get a light to Atlanta and then to Puerto Rico the next day where we had to get a hotel room until we could meet the boat.

The point of this story: Delta is awful and I’m glad you cursed them to their seventh generation.

The pipes are beautiful by the way. I hope you’re having fun now that you’re finally in San Diego!

Glad you finally made it. Sucks about the flight. My brother’s had some choice things to say about different airlines lately. He flies a lot for his job. A couple of months ago, he got stranded in Indonesia when his flight got canceled and then he was bumped from three more flights. He got to spend three extra days there and then missed a meeting with a client on a multi-million dollar contract. (He works in the fashion industry.) Thankfully, one of the other members of his team was able to take care of the meeting. And at least you didn’t end up like my cousin. He’s bald and has a bushy beard and he’s Hispanic and Native American. He got detained on suspicion of being a terrorist. They didn’t believe him when he said he was who he was until my aunt faxed a copy of his military id. He laughs about it now.

Those talent pipes are beautiful. I want a set very very much. I want to use the brooch style one for a shawl pin. Actually, I’d probably wear it with my arisaidh next time I make it to a re-enactment event and see if anyone notices.

You know, I’m sure I’m not the only one around here who plays an instrument. It would be sweet to have a competition where we send in us playing our compositions. Then Rothfuss could give away talent pipes to a select few winners…

Hmm although, I do want to see book 3 released in this lifetime, so maybe a distraction like this isn’t such a good idea after all…

I’ve been tossing around a way to make Tinker, Tanner work or Violet Bides since I love the lyrics to that… I do think one of these days we should have an Eolian at a convention and get together to drink, sing, and just have fun.

Yeah, as others have said, it would seem wrong just to BUY the talent pipes. I wonder who these days would have the authority to award them? Maybe Bela Fleck? Ian Bostridge? Alison Krauss? That’s who comes to mind when thinking about who might GET them. . .I could see this getting awfully political awfully fast. Better to imagine a [slightly] more politics-free Aeolian environment where consensus might be a little easier to come by, and where the musical world is a little smaller.

I thought the same thing. Luckily my friends were the ones calling for me to get them, so I feel a little justified. One of them was going to snag a pair FOR me and then present them at our next show, but I beat her to it by getting a pair from Preview Night at the Con.

$46 is a meager price to pay for the brilliance of the Eolian pipes. And airplanes are getting crappier and crappier as the days pass. It used to be where everyone was all “OH MAN WE CAN FLY! WE CAN BLOODY FLY!”
And now?… “WE CAN FLY!… For the low price of my liver and kidneys. And maybe not even get there. Heck, I don’t even know if I’ll get off the ground.”

I happened to be visiting relatives in Stevens Point all of last week and was there for the storm. The damage was pretty massive and while the hotel only lost power for about 8 hours their house went almost a day and a half without power. All across town there were entire trees uprooted. It seems Patrick’s wrath is indeed something to be feared.

I too had problems with Delta. I was supposed to fly Friday the 15th from Little Rock to Detroit (on my way to SP) but find out upon arriving at the airport that my flight had been delayed by over 2 hours which would cause me to land slightly after my connecting flight was heading out. Ended up having to head back home and take the first flight out in the morning.

I’m guessing Patrick was trying to fly out of CWA in Wausua to Minneapolis, which is how we flew home Yesterday (Sunday). Luckily Delta actually delivered as promised for us.

Another week long visit to Stevens Point and still no chance run in with one of my favorite authors. Totally not stalking you dude, I swear.

Does anyone else realize what this means? We now know, in US dollars, what Kvothe’s talent pipes are worth. I’m pretty sure he mentions what he could sell them (maybe pawn them) for at some point in one of the books.

This information is a Rosetta Stone that could let us translate any sum of money into dollars. How many dollars is a four talent tuition? We can figure that out. We can because it’s important. I need to do some reading, unless someone can work the numbers out already.
