Tonight, Tonight…

So I’m back from New York. Over the last few days I’ve been catching up on my life and recovering from the cold I always seem to get whenever I fly somewhere.

This was only my second trip to the NYC. Here are the highlights and my impressions.

New York taxis have absolutely insane drivers. That said, judging by the fact that I’ve never seen a single accident there, I’m going to say that they’re also very capable, safe drivers as well. My current strategy is to treat every taxi trip like a tiny roller coaster ride. Sometimes I even scream and throw my hands in the air. It’s fun.

I like the pigeons in New York. They’re all sorts of cool colors. Nobody else in New York likes the pigeons.

People in New York are very proud of Central Park. But the truth is if you walk for five minutes in any direction from my house here in Wisconsin, you’ll find just as much nature with fewer crowds. As an added bonus, you can climb the trees around here without anyone bitching at you.

New York has so many cool museums that I can’t even begin to get into it.

The Quill Award ceremony was pretty cool. I’m looking forward to seeing myself on TV, if for no other reason than to see what the hell I said during my acceptance speech.

But there are a few problems. I know the awards are on tonight. I know they’re on NBC (or MSNBC). But other than that, I have no idea when it’s playing. I can’t find any listings for it.

Even if I could. I don’t have cable here in the house. So chances are I couldn’t watch it.

So my only hope is that some tech savvy person manages to pirate the thing and put it up on Youtube or something. Or that one of my friends manages to tape it for me.

For now, I’ll leave you with the only Quill picture I’ve managed to find so far:

Yech. I am many things, but I am not terribly photogenic.

I’m in the middle. On the right is Steven Schirripa, of Sopranos fame. Believe it or not, that pretty girl is with me. Her name is Sarah, and just for the record, in the picture I’m threatening to kick this goomba’s ass if he tries to make a move on her. Let me assure you, it was incredibly manly of me. My voice didn’t hardly quaver at all.

That’s all for now folks. Have a good Halloween.

pat

P.S. Extra points to anyone who can guess what I’m dressing up as tonight….

I couldn’t find any Quill listings either and we have cable… Will check MSNBC next- I’m sure you can depend on a faithful minion or two to post it somewhere.Hagrid? Abernathy? <>Gargoyle Cover<> man? Gnome? Medieval Barkeep? James Bond? (still have the tux?)Have fun at the party!

I think you’re dressing up as either Zeus or Thor. I have satellite, but apparently am unable to watch NBC. It’s there, and there are three showings. In the mountain time zone, it’s on at 5.30, 8, and 11.30 p.m. Do the math from there. Please someone tape it and put it up on youtube? Please?

Unfortunately, I don’t know when it comes on either. I have NBC, so it might be on there. I’ll be watching for it.I live in WI, too. About twenty miles from you. Channel 13 is NBC (from what I can understand, anyway). I don’t know if you get it or not, but it’s worth a try.Other than that, you might be able to order a tape of it from NBC. I don’t know this for sure, but it seems like they’d sell them on one of their websites.

Congrats on the Quill and of course, the hot chick. Who knew fantasy authors had groupies :)As for Halloween, I’m guessing either Hagrid or Grizzly Adams.

I don’t think you’re big enough to be Hagrid. I know a guy that has a beard like yours. He works with ‘disturbed’ people, as he puts it rather kindly. And you know, I’ve read your book, it might fit. Sorry can’t give you his name, but it would be a good costume. He wears a lot of flannel. And major congratulations on your award. Tell us about your speech in case we don’t see it on TV.

Unfortunately, at least in the version that our Chicago affilliate ran at 6 pm CST, they didn’t show your speech! The Nerve!Romance, Mystery, Biography, sure, but noo…heaven forfend they show the SF…*grumble*…but we did get to see you laughing at Colbert, since you were sitting right behind the Sopranos guy and they kept showing him.

Tis a bit late to post this (11:30 pm EST) but I did manage to catch about the last half of the Quills on NBC (it ran from 7pm to 8pm EST). The good news is you won the Quill. The bad news is you didn’t win book of the year. And the even worse news is, you didn’t make it on TV. They showed to cover of <>The Name Of The Wind<>, but it was one of those “and here are some Quill awards that were awarded earlier……”Pretty sucky. And no, that wasn’t the word I wanted to use.

Well, I’m from NY so:Hooray for you noticing the no accident thing, many people don’t. I like pigeons. (Is it wrong that I keep wanting to write pidgeons?)Central park is cool because 1) land in the City is crazy expensive! To have all that land just SITTING there as trees and grass is cool. 2) It’s man made. Swear to god. 3) I’ve never actually been in Central Park. heh.Oh, and I’ve got Direct TV and I’m at a loss as to where the quills are. But i’ll get on lookin for a torrent.(Long Live OiNK!)

Well, at first I was disappointed that I missed the Quills, but I think I would have been much more put out if I had gone through the trouble of finding and watching them only to find that they skipped over you. As for the costume, I think you might have a fit of egotistical geekiness and dress up as Kvothe, red wig and all. Or you could just go with the obvious and dress up as Hagrid.

I’ve got to say, i adore the pidgeons. In my opinion they’re one of the best tourist attractions in NYC. I love that place. It’s crazy busy but it’s so beautiful. One of these days, i am definately going back again. By the way, did you recieve the package alright?

I watched it and they didn’t show you getting presented the award. Damn.IMO, you wuz robbed. I read four of the books eligible for Quill Boof of the Year, including the winner, and your book was HEADS & SHOULDERS abouve the other nominees I read. The Nora Roberts title which won wasn’t even her best.Damn.

Just ran into my room with your book. I’ve been gone from it for two days, and now I am having abstinences. My mom will be so pissed if she finds out!Whatever the outfall of that award thingie, know that it is flawed unless you win. Because no book has made me act like a kid on too much sugar over a book in years!

The Quills weren’t on here. I was ticked. But from the sound of it, I didn’t miss you because you weren’t on anyway. That sucks, too. You went all the way to NYC and didn’t even get to be on national television.I guess you’ll have to win next year as well to get another shot at it. Everyone nominate and vote for The Wise Man’s Fear!Did you dress as Pan? I know how you love to run around bare-chested with a flute and a cadre of fairies.

peroxide your hair, shave, and get a looooong leather jacket- you’d be a dead ringer for Spike. You’re definitely as cool as he is. I missed the Quills on TV, I hope somebody manages a YouTube! Also, the Colbert-Rothfuss smoochies would have merited several shots. Too bad they didn’t air it ;)-Gretchen Treu

Threatening to kick his ass? Yeah, right. I know what you’re really doing is offering Sarah as incentive if he helps get your book made into a movie. That said, I’m going to back up the King and say you should dress up as yourself. Black duster, Joss Whedon t-shirt, and a towel around your waist.PS – Don’t forget the backpack full of ancient keys and fairy/fairie/faerie rocks.
