Photo Contest Part V – Driving, Reading, and Animals

Apparently, the book has been doing a lot of traveling lately, forcing me to add a new category. “Best Transportational Photo.”

This shows a degree of loving care that I appreciate.

Here, I can see my book isn’t entirely safe…. But it’s certainly having an adventure. That’s a fair trade-off.

This shot shot gave me flashbacks to Microsoft’s flight simulator. At the time I played it, the simulator was so accurate that you could count hours spent playing toward your total flying hours when applying for a pilot’s licence. It was so accurate that the manual was thicker than your average college history text. So accurate that I never, ever, managed to successfully land a plane without crashing.

Please do not read my book while driving.

Please do not read my book while driving. Even if you have the ability to steer with your freakish monkey feet.

Please do not read the book while driving. Even if you’re impatient for the audiobook. Runner-up.

Please do not…. Okay. Here’s the deal. If you don’t drive while reading the book, you two can have the win for this category. Fair?

A lot of people sent in pictures of themselves reading the book.

A lot of people.

A lot.

Of people.

There were several pictures of the book triumphing over homework.

If you look closely at this one, you can see that my book is also the wallpaper on the computer in the background.

You might recognize this lovely lady from before. She’s the dancer we saw back in part three of the contest.

Runner-up. I love the smile here, she’s obviously enjoying herself. If you’re ever trapped on a desert island, we all know what you should bring.

The book, I mean. Not a pretty young lady in a dress. Though now that I’m thinking about it….

Winner. The staging here is great. It’s also interesting to note that the book she’s reading from is the promotional galley. That’s the first version of the book that they ever printed. Don’t feel too jealous if you don’t have one though. I made about five thousand small changes and re-wrote several chapters between that version and when the hardcover came out.

Lastly, we have the “Book with Animals” category. Where, oddly enough, there were an disproportionately large number of bird-related entries.

I view my inability to come up with a funny caption for this picture a personal failing on my part. If anyone can come up with something worthwhile in the comments section, I’d really appreciate it.

Awww….

Creepy.

Creepier.

Runner up.

Winner. I really love this picture. Not only is the composition really nice. Not only do I like turtles, but this is exactly how I feel sometimes when I’m doing revisions….

Rest assured that in these last two photos, the animals were handled well and set free in the end. Here are the two photographers (both of whom you’ve already seen at this point) saying goodbye to the turtle, who they had nicknamed “Diogenes.”

Remember, if you’re a winner or a runner-up, you get fabulous prizes. For details head over here.

I’m sorry for the weak ending to this post, and the lack of wit in the captioning. But as I started to enter the photos for the final category, I began to feel… profoundly.

I was at Wiscon this weekend, and there was a stomach flu getting spread around. I thought I’d dodged it, but, given that I feel a painful rumbling in my guts and I’m beginning to sweat, apparently not.

I was looking forward to working on more revisions to book two after I posted this, but I fear I’m in for a very unpleasant night instead.

Pray for me.

Great pictures! Looks like some people had a lot of fun taking them. You know, if we had a forum, we could probably come up with some very good captions between us. *smiles sweetly*

Ummm…this is not exactly funny, but I can’t help but think of Leda and the swan. But maybe it’s just me. I hate birds. These pictures freaked me out. Especially the one with the mean hawk thing on the rock, good Lord, nightmare territory there. This was my least favorite part of the photo contest so far. And I hope Pat didn’t get too sick from the Wiscon bug. That is making me feel less glum that I missed that event. Please, no more birds. Snakes are great, turtles rock. Lay off the creepy birds. And dragongirl is so right that we need a forum!

What forest do I need to be in to find those tree dwelling nymphs? Mother natures hot children indeed. As for a funny caption, how about “what’s good for the goose is certainly worth a gander!!”Feel better soon pat. I recommend yogurt for your ring sting!!:-)

Stomach flu not so nice :(Leda and the Swan sprang to mind for me as well, but I’m not sure how the book fits in.

Aww, we don’t have hot chicks in the woods around here, Unless you count all the burnouts who gather around some of the clearings. But I’ve had better converstions with trees. What you need for the flu is some good “Tom Tucker’s Mint Ginger Ale” It doesn’t help much, but it makes you feel great.

Ah, some great photos in this batch. Hmm… a funny caption. I don’t do funny, that much should be obvious by now. How about: ‘Goose Abuse! Old Macdonald’s goose expresses anger and embarassment over young girl’s taunting.’ End funny. That was crap, and I’ve no one to blame but myself. And maybe the internet – nothing is funny anymore!Pat, feel better. I had the flu once, and then I was hit by a runaway crane whilst heading home sick. Long, long, funny story. It ends with me getting free ice cream, so I was pretty happy. Captain Joe’s Flu Remedy: A heavy dose of your own book, Pat, taken twice daily through the eyes. The awesome restorative powers will fix you up in no time.Heh, or alternatively, holding onto a bottle of vodka with a flaming rag shoved down its neck for as long as you dare – that’ll sweat the flu out of anyone. Yeah, let’s feckin’ do it and never look back.

If I were Leda, I’d be using the book to beat off the swan. Normally I don’t countenance the abuse of books, but self-defense is a reasonable exemption.Hmm. There are some punny possibilities with “duck and cover,” but I think I’ll leave the comments section no less child-friendly (Leda and the swan?!) than I found it.Honestly, I like the duck and girl photo. The expressions on both are good. It looks like a perfectly fine NOTW photoshoot was interrupted by an insurance commercial.

captain joe: I’m trying to visualize your ‘flu vs crane’ experience… Was it a rolling, weight-lifting crane that attacked you, or a panicked, flapping crane that smacked into you mid-flight? Both have a significant value of funny-factor.Oh, and I tried your Captain Joe’s Flu Remedy (first one)… My eyeballs hurt after the second jab and I got eye goo on my book, but I forgot all about my stomach problems. Then I tried your second remedy and my eyes didn’t hurt anymore. You’ve just earned yourself an honorary MD degree from the school of Captain Joe Rocks!Laura: I like your insurance commercial idea. I think we can work with this…

First, feel better Pat! Blech, blech- stomach flu sucks.Second, I think all the audio book publishers should take note of the dangers posed by not having your book readily available for drivers. Allan Corduner or Simon Jones would be a great narrator.Marky- gander! ;-D

Hell no. Sean Connery in the audio book FTW. NOTW is too good to be read by any half ass talent. Either Sean or Carey Elwes, both are awesome enough to enhance the book.

Alrighty, Kip- it’s on! ;-DI love, <>love<> Sean Connery and Cary Elwes is awesome too. I also really like James Marsters. (Spike from Buffy) I mention him because he proves the point I am going for here- he narrates the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. He’s a great actor, the books are fun, and the audio versions suck. Narration is an art- and if you listen to some of the ones done by celebrities rather than professionals it makes a <>HUGE<> difference. I listen to lots and lots of audio books during my lengthy work commute and the guys I mentioned are two of my favorites. I don’t think I would have stuck with the Bartimaeus trilogy if not for the absolutely brilliant way Simon Jones delivered the story. We so need forums…

Well, I can’t say much, but that’s because I can’t get into audio books, my mind wanders too much. For my commute I blast metal and pay attention to it with a small protion of my brain, and use the rest to drive/daydream. While I would agree with you that it should be handled by a professional, there is just something about NOTW being read with a scottish accent that would just seem fitting.

Oh, Also the whoever Narrated the game “The Bards Tale” should do it, he was EPIC, with a double capital E. (in my world you can double capitalize letters)If anyone has ever played that game (for X-Box and PS2) you will know what I mean. If not, then you have a giant hole in your life and should immediately stop everything and play it.

Kip the Multi facetted – I completely agree that a Scottish talent should do the audio books. I jushed read a paragraph aloud and it shounded damn good! Cheap jokes aside (sorry Amanda! Sometimes it just needs let out). I think Sean Pertwee could be a contender. Great voice.Captain Joe. Couple of points. Your flu trick did not work and burning hair is not an aphrodisiac. Damn you!Oh, and please don’t let me be the only one who wanted to turn on the wipers in the “dude on the windscreen photo”. Sorry dude. It’s like kicking someone in the bum when there bent over. Just sooo tempting!!:-0

The poor duck has a rather sad story. You see, this duck once had friends. But slowly due to the ecological progression of natural selection his friends, all seven of them, were dragged off into the woods during the night. They didn’t disappear all at once mind you. One a night over the course of weeks. This duck is genetically superior as he has survived the Pennsylvania outdoors, alone, over the winter. When we went to take pictures near his little pond, he mistook my sister, wrapped up in a white sheet, as a duck. This itself is heartbreaking as the mad little bird is so desperate for companionship he is attracted to anything white. The amusing part is my sister is afraid of ducks due to a horribly traumatising experience when she was a child. Pat- Hot water, lemon and honey to taste is great to sooth throats and stomachs. It smells particularly delightful. PS- If you look carefully you can see the duck’s self applied eyebrow of mud ;P

In my defense for the picture with the book kayaking. It stayed in my back pack for most of the trip I actually wasnt bringing it with me for the contest. I was bringing it to re-read on a basically uninhabbited ( at the time summer people have a house there) island near Cape Cod the pic was taken with my cell phone camera. So the book was strapped in and was not harmed.

Flight simulator… The bane of my and my roomates’ junior year in college. Then my high school ex-boyfriend came to visit (it seemed like a good idea at the time). The same ex-boyfriend who had since become a Navy jet pilot. Yup. Damned if he didn’t land on the carrier first try. [hmph]

Damn, i’m writing a book, and i showed it to a editor, but, while he likes it, he will only give me a contract if i take a pen name. I didn’t think the name Oliver Stein was so bad of an author name!
