European Tour – a call for bookstores.

First: My Thanks

Thanks to everyone who offered their congratulations.

(I’d be more properly verbose and flowery, but I have to be brief here. I’m using borrowed internet up here in the northwoods of Wisconsin, and this place is closing in 15 minutes.)

Second: The Tour

A while back, I promised Sarah a trip to Europe. Now, with the baby coming, I’m realizing I’m going to have to either make good on that promise, or wait for years until we no longer have a newborn. Because dragging a newborn around an international trip is not cool on many levels.

So we’re going. Sarah deserves her trip for putting up with my endless bullshit.

Soon I will be turning over a solid draft of my book for my editor to read and… well… edit. This will take her a while, because the book is beastly long and she’s good at her job.

While she’s doing that, I have a window of opportunity. Rather than sit around, twiddle my thumbs, and fret over what my editor will say, I’m going to take Sarah to Europe before she gets too big with baby to do more than waddle to the fridge and make me rub her feet.

I’m looking forward to the trip. It will do me good to take a break from the book for a bit. If I don’t get a few weeks away from it in between drafts, I lose perspective.

Also, it will be nice to have a bit of a walkabout on my own before finalizing Kvothe’s own set of adventure as he goes out to make his fortune in the wide world.

Third: Sending out the Call.

For years now, I’ve had folks in the UK and the rest of Europe saying things like, “When are you going to be coming to [insert name of foreign country here]??!!?”

Well now’s the time.

I’m more that willing to do signings at the cities I’m stopping at. But since this is happening on the spur of the moment, I don’t have time to go through official bookstore channels, or perform the typical courting dances with foreign bookstores: first researching, then calling around, then playing phone tag, then trying to convince them that it would be worth their while to order a dozen of my books and set up a card table….

By the time I finished that, I’d already be back in the US.

So here’s where you come in.

I’m posting my itinerary below. What cities I’ll be and where. If you own a bookstore (or work in one) and you’d like me to come in and do a signing, lovely. Drop me a message off the contact form and we’ll set something up.

If you don’t work in a bookstore, but you know a cool one you think would be interested, ask them if they might be interested. Then, if they are, drop me a message. Or have them do it.

May 8-11 Rome

May 13-15 Amsterdam

May 17-19 Paris

May 21-25 London (And environs.)

May 27– 28 Edinburgh

May 30 Glasgow

Crap crap crap. The place is closing.

More later,

Fondly,

pat

Wow, congrats on the baby and the trip. Sarah deserves MANY feet rubs. You deserve to be distracted while your editor edits.

Have a great time and do, pretty please post pictures!

(p.s. they don’t stay infants very long. drag her/him with you everywhere — it is all in the training! Trust me, you won’t regret it.)

Argh. If only you would be in Rome *after* the 15th.

Have a great time on the trip! And be sure to get a drink at The World’s End while you’re in Edinburgh. It’s on High Street, and it’s worth it just to say that you were drinking at the world’s end.

That sounds fabulous and decadent. Eat some Cadbury chocolate in England, and Stonehenge is quite something, no matter how many pictures you have seen of it!

And do find some fish and chips. So yummy over there, no matter how touristy it is.

Uber congrats on the baby, good luck agreeing on a name :)

This post makes me wish I owned a bookstore for the first time in my life [ I’m a student of horology ].

It also, oddly, makes me want a baby. And a foot rub. I’m not sure how my “manlyness” feels about the latter.

Congrats again on the tinything [My Welshness is attempting to force me to use ‘Babi’] and Huzzah for the trip/tour! We love you Mister Pat. Darn that place and it’s too-early-closing!

Pat, this I will definitely have to participate in. An awesome opportunity, if there ever was one! However, I have first year chemistry exams on Friday the 22nd on May, and Tuesday 26th of May.
I go to Surrey Uni, which is kind of near London. Surely there is no real point in trying to organise some kinda book signing in Guildford, if you are only there for a limited time is there? Unless I talked to the university’s bookshop on campus, which is actually well within a fifteen minute walk from Guildford station…
I will definitely go to a London book signing over that weekend of yours, if you plan one, in any case.
About a week before you arrive in England, it will be my 21st -what luck! My birthday just got a great deal better.
Congratulations on the pregnancy, and I hope to see your over here!

& are you sure you can’t be in London or Oxford between May 3rd and 15th? Really sure? =P ‘twould be ironic to finally get to meet you in Europe, considering I’m not that far away from the Wisconsin north woods… =)

Between Amsterdam and Paris you should most definitely make a 1 day stop in Belgium, and that stop better be in Ghent! It’s one of the more underappreciated cultural experiences, but that’s a good thing because

“Aesthetic appeal is high particularly because the city has not turned into a mono-economy of tourism”

    and

“An interesting range of cultural experiences: churches, medieval castle museums, and rich painting collections, well-preserved and -presented.”

as says National Geographic’s Traveler magazine.

Just drop a line if you need more convincing! And you need to be convinced! Don’t botch this opportunity!

    Pat,

Since you’re in the UK from May 21 – 25 why not investigate the Hay on Wye Literary Festival (http://www.hayfestival.com/wales), it will get you out of London, (and I still love living in London) and every second store in Hay is a bookstore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hay-on-Wye) (http://www.booktown.co.uk/), which can’t be bad.

Also its a short distance from Cardiff and Birmingham, all major cities with eager bookstores.

Hope to catch you in London!

While me and my husband were in Paris for our honeymoon, we randomly found a very awesome comic book store while on our way to take pictures of the Moulin Rouge for my sister. It was wonderful. And yes, we did think it was pretty amusing that we were more excited about finding a comic book store than we were about seeing all the other great cultural icons. Oh, and don’t forget the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays. I’m not sure what it costs now, but when we were there, the Orange ticket for the Metro was 18 Euros, and we could ride all week, everyday, anytime. I doubt very much it’s gone up much. I really really really want to go back to France. I miss it and mostly I miss my in-laws. Ah well, we’ll be moving back there next year. If traveling with a baby is a bit of a pain, I can’t wait to see how moving is going to go.

    Have a fantastic time!

Someone who ownes a bookstore in Amsterdam… Crap! I don’t know any! If Amsterdam doesn’t work out, my relations in Rotterdam are a lot better and we’ve got a huge (and I mean 5 or 6 levels) bookstore in the center of the city. But, nonetheless. I’ll see what I can do for you concerning Amsterdam.
And F*ck! My agenda tells me I’ve got to work on the 14th and 15th… We’ll see what we can do about that.

Congratulations on the baby and the tour. But just to let you know, it’s far far far easier dragging a newborn around than waiting to travel. They are small, very portable and if you are breast-feeding, very low maintenance. First born was born in UK, went to China age 3 weeks, did rehearsals for a production of Midsummer Night’s Dream from 4-11 weeks, went to Xian, Seoul, Rome, Madrid,, Washington DC, London all under 1 year. When they are really small, all they want is human warmth and a lot of milk. They don’t care where they are and if they have those things, they don’t cry that much. Just saying.

And Brussels is very beautiful, has a great Waterstones and the best comic books in the world.

wow. this really seems to be some spur of the moment trip. Not even a month. :D But I’m really happy for you, Europe has so many lovely places, everything is just older and therefore has more history I guess. A lot of culture and less of american entertainment. Bring Tacos along with you, we don’t have ’em here. ;)
Sadly I don’t see any stop in Germany on that list and I won’t be able to travel to Amsterdam or Paris to see you. (I really would like to, but there’s the thing with convincing my parents…)
I’m also really happy to read that you’re making progress with that book. :D Can’t wait till it gets out!

Dont go to london, if you dont mind my saying so its a dump, go to another one of England’s historic and well known cities, just choosing one at random, how about Nottingham. Birthplace of Robin Hood, y’know the guy played by Kevin Costner who kills Alan Rickman and seems to think that Nottingham is on the border with Scotland (it isn’t). Im sure youd enjoy Nottingham much more than London and me choosing it has absolutley notthing to do with the fact that i live here. Congats on the baby and i hope you enjoy the trip.

Ps you should take the baby everywhere that way whenever they complain about you not taking them anywhere when they’re older you can say that they’ve already been.

When you’re in Rome, be sure to visit Ostia Antica, just oustide town. It’s BETTER than Pompei because it hasn’t been turned into a massive tourist trap. Last time I was there I managed to sneak into the underworks of a bath to have a look around, chilled out in an ancient Mithraeum, and found ancient human remains poking out of a hillside. (You could even see the edges of the stone coffin where the landslide had sheared it off.) It was one of the coolest experiences of my life. Well, it’s up there anyway, but the point is, you don’t want to miss ostia antica (old ostia).

Just to support the cry for a visit in Germany: +1! I never have visited a book signing or something similar, but for you I would. Pretty sad that you aren’t coming :(. Hamburg ftw!

Well anyhow, congrats on the baby!

Congrats on the baby Pat and Sarah :)

Hope you have a great time in Europe!!

And also, you should maybe stop by in Ireland. Because according to legend, theres a magic well in Ireland and if you drink from it then it means you’ll give birth to Joss Whedon. Funnily enough its right across the road from my local bookstore. What a crazy happenstance?!? :)

  72. LoL
    Posted April 20, 2009 at 2:01 AM | Permalink

Goodness! I wouldn’t want to wish birthing Joss Whedon to anyone! I mean, we all know how awesome he is, but imagine trying to get him out! A *baby* would be plenty tough enough to get out.

Pat, I’m Aussie so I have no vested interest in this, but I was also suprised not to see Germany in your plans – it’s my fave country in Europe. Stuttgart is beautiful, cultured and not that far from Paris; Munich is fantastic and not just for the beer.

Fantasy is a well respected genre over there – it’s amazing!

Anyway, happy travels wherever you wander and enjoy yourselves!

    Hi,

i would like to throw myself in with Hamburg :-), but please plan your tour according to Sarahs and your wishes first. Since i have my vacations till May 25th, i can travel myself to visit a signing location.

If you would like to get tips on northern germany (e.g. Northern or Baltic sea, Hamburg, Kiel), i would be very willing to provide some.

    Sincerely yours, Martin

I’ll look forward to seeing you in London, Forbidden Planet is really central, so would be a good place to sign if possible.

Check Cambridge out on your way up to Edinburgh.

i was going to say “berlin, berlin”, but many people have said that before. hamburg/munich are pretty and all (and i’ve lived in both) but if you only visit one place in germany (and it isn’t time for oktoberfest) than berlin is a good choice. it’s amazingly beautiful here at the moment too :)

And I’m one of the London based fans, very keen on meeting and getting my copy of the Name of the wind signed (along with just meeting one of my new fave authors in the flesh). Please update your blog to confirm where you might be on the visit to London.

    Thank you. :)

Have fun on the trip, Pat!
I went on a study abroad trip last summer that included stops in Paris and Rome. I don’t know if you’ve been before, but those are two wonderful cities. Word of warning: the people of Rome have no sense of personal space, so watch out for stray limbs poking in mouths on the city buses (my fiancee got some Italian lady’s finger in her mouth, lolol). Make SURE you go to the Pantheon in Rome. I proposed to my fiancee there in the oculus’s stream of sunlight.

First I want to say congratulations to both of you.
A baby on its way is the best news ever. Well done, Mr. and Ms. Rothfuss! :)

Secondly I want to suggest you rename your Tour to “Italy-Netherland-France-UK” Tour, there is no European Tour without the heart of Europe. Avoid germany and it’s not a real european tour at all. However, don’t change your travel plans at short notice, just be aware you’ll be missing half of europe and you need a second trip for the other half some day ;)

I wish you a nice trip, great weather and a wonderful experience.

    Hi Pat,

yes, I read the comments below, but just to show you that there are quite a few fans living here, I have to write it again:

    Please don’t skip Germany.

    Visit Hamburg ;)
Or at least have a look at some of our nice old castles in middle-germany.

    All the best!

Congrats, Pat and Sarah! A baby! I’m happy for both of you and for the baby, to boot.

But, Pat, you Roth-Sloth, you, don’t skip Germany.

Being a tidy and correct German and all that, I went to great lengths to promote your book as have all my friends I’ve introduced your book to.

Have a nice time in Europe, man, especially in <>Amsterdam<> with all its canals. It’s a great place with cool <>pancake<> houses. I wouldn’t miss out on them. They even beat <>Ramen<>, I promise.

I will pray for you and Sarah to have such a joyful and wonder-filled trip that it becomes a favorite shared memory!
I will recommend that postcards are a light-weight and sure way to collect glorious pictures of great places and artwork. Being a true bookworm, I bought books from my favorite museums—what a chore to carry through international airports!! My clever daughter collected postcards of her favorites and we put them into an album when we got home. Both the books and album get perused often—but you really can buy most of the same books in the USA or order them from the museums when you get home. *grin* Unless you enjoy weight lifting.
    Wishing you both fabulous memories,
    Joy

When you are in London, the places to go are the Victoria & Albert museum (v.big and cool), The John Soanes museum (v. tiny and cool), and definitely the Tower of London – you will love Henry VIII’s spazzy armour.

The tower of London is a definite must see while you are in the area. Also Canterbury Cathedral is pretty cool. I hope you have a great trip and lots of fun. I know I did when I was there. Italy especially is a wonderful place, full of wonderful, and friendly people (probably more so than all the other places I visited combined).

Congratulations on the smaller version of you and Sarah.

WHAT!? Only two days in Paris!? Dude, please reevaluate. I recently travelblogged my experience Europe and came to fall in love with Paris and everything about it; check it out. I spent most of my time in Italy but Paris truly captured my imagination and heart. The food is some of the best I’ve had in my 31 yeas on earth, the people were warmer than my girlfriend’s inner thigh and the culture is more dense than the brick in George W’s head. In sum: SPEND A WEEK IN PARIS, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

Congrats with Sarah being pregnant, enjoy it both, because the baby will be there before you know it. :)

I agree with Bombie, pls make a small stop in Ghent (Belgium), you won’t regret it :), it’s a very beautiful medieval city :)

But because it’s not in your initial plans and I think it will be quite impossible to change them, this might be a place to remember for a future trip.

Have nice trip and don’t forget to take some time to relax and enjoy it.

I think I will start this off by saying I am new to this blogging epidemic, that I don’t own a bookstore (especially not a bookstore outside of the United States), and that I have always been enamored of the name “Vierra” for a girl if you have a beautiful baby girl. I don’t know why. I have never met a Vierra, been a Vierra, or heard/read about anyone named Vierra. So, if you feel like making the effort to enhance my being a little bit more (in addition to the wonderous work you have done with your writing thus far! I am so excited for the release, whenever it may be, and know you will get it correct and the world will rejoice in the second novel’s birth! Don’t rush, but continue to push yourself! And take breaks. I find that nothing helps me write History Essays like going to the bathroom every once in a while…), consider naming a child Vierra Rothfuss for me!

I hope that that last bit made sense. I am in a severely tired state of mind and I have been developing some horrid sleeping (or lack there-of) habbits that always seem like a good idea at the time.

I hope that the trip to Europe is everything you two need it to be! I, myself, am taking a three week trip to four countries this May! Maybe I will be able to attend one of these! I truly hope so, as I can tell by your beard and your stories that you are the model of what a man is. Maybe I can get a beard like yours some day. I am working on it. I shave every day for weeks, and then I don’t shave for weeks and I happily gawk at my scraggly scruffle of hair in the mirror and say how manly I am and then shave before my girlfriend gets angry. I don’t want to get any gristle in that whistle. (I am not sure I have ever heard that phrase before in my life, so I think I just made that up. I am going to start using that more in everyday life)

I think I am mainly going Germany, The Czech Republic, Austria, and Italy. I am not sure how easily I could influence my parents to take me on a trip to see you in person, but I will certainly try. I also wish I could see Spain, Ireland and Great Britain… maybe even France, although I am certain I would not be welcomed warmly there! And there are boyish fantasies I want to play out, such as walking over some Scottish bluff, or old barrows, or seeing some great Celtic relics of a lost age, and skipping through the halls of a torched and ivy-covered castle… But I think my trip will be a little more limited. Who knows? Maybe I will return to Europe later in my life to fulfill these wishes. I am just excited to leave the country this time. I have never been outside the United States, although I have been off of the Continental United States before…

But read me ramble! I need to sleep, eat, and go earn an education in High School…

I just wanted to let you know that you are inspiring another young man with love in his eyes and moisture behind his ears, and that I will dutifully continue being your fan no matter how long it takes for you to finish your book. Even if it takes you until April 2025. I will type at you again later, but until then…

    Respectfully Yours,

First I’d like to say congrats on the baby and your tour in Europe. I’m a Navy veteran (4 Years) and I rather enjoyed my time in Europe. I read Name of the Wind, twice, on my second deployment and i loved it, and am currently awaiting the second. I am also writing my own book and am also distracted by every day life and many other things… lets say you are never distracted compared to myself. Keep up the amazing work.

    Hi Pat,

First off, congrats on the baby!

Secondly, I’ve e-mailed Forbidden Planet (Geek Heaven, you’ll love it) here in the UK to ask about setting up a signing in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London so fingers crossed!

If anyone else in the UK wants a signing try e-mailing Forbidden Planet yourself, teh more e-mails the more likely they will set a signing up.

All the Best and hopefully see you in Glasgow Pat. :)

Ewan, I’ve tried Waterstones in Sauchiehall Street. They fobbed me off rather politely. I’ll send forbidden planet an email, but their shop is pretty small. Half of Pat’s beard would have to stay outside!

    Hey marky,

I’m only wanting top meet Pat with “The Beard”, no beard, no point! :P

I’ll maybe try Borders on Buchanan street, failing that we’ll just have to have it next to the Big Issue seller outside. :)
