Living a life of the mind

So the other day I’m in the car with Sarah, and I say, “Last night I had a dream where Nathan Fillion was teaching my dad how to use the computer.”

In order for you to appreciate this, I should mention that I don’t usually remember my dreams. Sarah does. She has a vivid dream life. Crazy dreams. Every night.

So I’m thinking that Sarah will be impressed. Not only did I remember this dream, but you have to admit it’s reasonably weird. Plus it has Nathan Fillion in it, which shows that my internal casting director is finally getting a decent budget to work with.

So I summarize my dream for Sarah. There isn’t much more to it other than the fact that Nathan Fillion was teaching my Dad some of the finer points of computer programming. Except, perhaps, to mention that Fillion was quite gracious about the whole thing, and was willing to come out to our house in order to make things more convenient for my dad.

When I finish, I expect Sarah to say something appreciative. Something like, “Wow,” or “Freaky,” or “You’ve really got to get over Firefly.”

But instead, without missing a beat, Sarah says, “I had a dream where I was going to marry Nathan Fillion, but I was really nervous because he had a horrible addiction to hobby farming. He was working really hard to overcome it, but I knew he was probably going to relapse pretty soon.

She shrugged. “Still, I was going to help him get through it. I knew I’d stay by his side no matter what. Very loyal of me. I think there were sheep involved.

And the winner is….

She’s all mine, boys. Stay away…

Wow! Color me jealous… my internal director must be on hard times no Nathan Fillion… I don’t think she has the budget for live animals either. It would explain why that 2 foot tall wax elephant was chasing me in my dream last night!

I haven’t dreamed in a while. usually I remember them when I wake up, but forget them by the time I make it to the can. But nope, haven’t remembered a thing in a few months. Watch this, tonight it’ll be something really odd… thanks for that Pat… lol

Sarah and I should get together – it would be a BATTLE ROYALE. My dear husband has started putting a time limit on all “I had the strangest dream” stories.
No Nathon Fillion, but I have washed dishes with Bette Midler, and have been both Jean Claude Van Dam and a cartoon squirrel (not simultaneously… yet)and had fabulously complicated adventures.

I’ve thought of writing a book of my dreams, but in the words of Daniel Tosh, “then about halfway through… you realize you’re retarded.”
I have, so I usually just inflict them on dear husband, because he paid for the package and he deserves it. :)

The WEIRDEST dream I ever had was this: My car stops working at night in front of a building under construction. It’s pretty spooky quiet–nobody around. Then I hear some distant music coming from somewhere–an eerily upbeat song I can’t quite make out. Suddenly, a bright light descends from the scaffolding high-up. The light is coming from a disco ball. Sitting on the disco ball is Jeffrey Jones (the actor who played the principal in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off). He’s holding a microphone. Decending with him on some planks rigged to lines are Las Vegas showgirls. They all start singing Happy Together by The Turtles. It’s quite a strange yet impressive sight. They go all out. When the song is done, they ascend into the void from whence they came, my car starts working, I shrug and hop into my car and drive away. The end.

So, I tweeted the link to your blog to Nathan Fillion. I think you might be hearing from “Captain Tight Pants” at some point. He generously offered to teach your Dad how to check his email, and in a blatant attempt to avoid any legal obligations, denied he’s the father of Sarah’s baby!

To be fair, pregnant women have VERY vivid dreams. I almost never remembered my dreams until I got pregnant and now I have crazy ones all the time. I think it has something to do with all that waking up in the middle of the night!

Oh dreams, those are amazing! My internal director tends to chase after undiscovered talents, but it can churn out some strange ones when it wants to. I’ve been kidnapped in a crowded street, navigated through a lightless tower at the whim of a mysterious benefactor AND walked into the bathroom to find that they had moved the school library there.

Still, I’m jealous of Sarah having so many dreams she can remember. Just one of the few perks of having little Oot growing inside her. She deserves it.

My dreams are weirder. I’m pretty sure you’d have to be on drugs to have weirder dreams than I do.

Here’s some points from one I had a week ago:
I eat my headphones, then pull them out, by the wires hanging out of my mouth; I battle another man to the death, armed with a knife and a round of cheese; “The Puck”, a hard candy/heirloom, marks me as a son of Abraham, so people try to kill me, believing I have superpowers; a basket holds mouldy puppies, still living; I cross a bog carrying a canoe, the waters edge is adorned with rusty lawnmowers; A parasite, in pupae form, burrows into my hand then crawls under the skin to my elbow, matures to larvae, then emerges, looking like a long maggot; I carry a bloodied child through the streets; I travel through a cramped and decaying maze of tubular caging loaded with pitfalls and booby traps; I wander an extensive and crazed lavatory, resembling an insane asylum with it’s silent white-clad watchers, wondering where the paradise I remember has gone, and avoiding contact with it’s blighted surfaces.

This was actually a pretty normal dream for me, no bees chasing me with acid, no giant cones rolling around in an apocalyptic setting, and I recognize some of the elements from real life. The ‘crazed lavatory’ part is analogous to my current views of religion and how they’ve changed over time.

    Dreams are fun.

I also don’t believe I’ve often dreamt of actors/celebrities, though if I did, Nathan Fillion would be at the top of my list. I want him to come and teach me about various cmputer-y things.

I had a dream starring Uma Thurman once. She kicked some government butt in a giant robot. That’s about as far as celebrities go in my head, apparently, since the next time I dreamed of something it involved a cute boy at my high school. He played the father of two psychic girls.

Does Sarah have a dream journal? If she has so many awesome dreams, then she can write them down every morning and keep tabs on them. I don’t know about the benefits of it but I do hear it’s fun. ^_^

    Hello Pat!

I’m reading my soft-back copy of NotW for the 7th, and I fear my last time. It’s dying a slow and painful death.

My hardback copy, though, has never been opened. I bought the softback the first time I saw it back in late 2007, and have loved it ever since. I am nearing the end of the book (Ambrose just broke the lute), and decided it would be cool to find out when book 2 was coming out.

I’ve read through some of your blog, and wanted to wish you the best for getting it going (Because that means I get to indulge myself even sooner >:D ).

Best regards – your fan and free “advertiser”… I’ve yet to inflict bodily harm to friends for refusing, but I have infiltrated houses at night and forced them to read.

    Speaking of odd dreams…

I was just deciding whether or not to tell you about the dream I had last night when I read your post — which, I think was a sign that I should tell you.

It was a very short dream (from what I remember) but, you were on a panel with Neil Gaiman and I forget what the two of you were talking about, but then you kissed him. That was my dream. It was a little weird.

I had a dream that there were theses two kids and the one turned into Napoleon Bonaparte and the other disappeared. Then they were back in ancient times and Napoleon stole Genghis Khan’s horse, and then the samurai were chasing Napoleon but he got away. the dream turned into this big room and Genghis Khan says,” I thought there was an American her.”
Then he frowns and points to the Narnians, who are sadly unarmed, and tells the samurai to throw them in the cages. But the Narnians escape through the window!!!!1!!!!! and now they are running away (and somehow as small as mice) when a big hawk with a samurai riding it swoops down and eats Lucy. The others get on a train and realize that there is a big scary woman there who works for Genghis Khan!!! So zpeter barricades hmkself in the bathroom and throws a paperclip out the window. He is saved!! He disappears. Edmund and Susan do the same and so does Sirius Black’s wife. They appear in the sky wearing little cloud tutus. they are also dressed like the four Links in THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: FOUR SWORDS ADVENTURE, so Peters wearing blue, Susan is purple, Edmund is green, and Sirius Black’s wife is wearing red. The wife opens her mouth to say something and I wake up. The End.

I can remember dreams I had as a kid (and I’m closing in on the big 5-oh). I also can sometimes remember the “look” of a dream, meaning I think our dreams are more sketches in what we are “seeing” in them, and then we rely on our memory of the dream to make it seem more complete than it was.
That sounds kind of stupid, huh? Only way I can explain it really. And it makes me wonder if it has something to do why some people remember their dreams and others do not.
I don’t remember all my dreams, and it can be frustrating to wake up and have it slip away like fog burning off of a lake in the morning sun. But enough make an impression on me to last years — nightmares and whimsy can all leave their stamp, in glorious technicolor CinemaScope or a minimalist stage play. You dream what you need to dream at the time, I think. The budget depends on what needs to be told I guess.
Geeze. Sorry for the rambling, but dreams and the act of dreaming fascinates me.

By her response, I think we’ve established that Sarah is a bit too cool for you. I suspect she is actually the author of “The Name of the Wind”, and is just publishing it under your name for the sake of the tender male ego, or because she despises the trappings of celebrity, is incurably shy, or some other nonsense.
Perhaps I could “take her off your hands”, and leave you free to write a “children’s” book, hmmm?
