Coming Soon to a Town Near You! (Offer Not Valid in Towns Not Near You)

As many of you know, a couple of days ago I decided to take a bit of a road trip down to Virginia. And, because I am an accommodating Midwesterner, I thought I might do a reading or two on my way down. So some folks could get their books signed, if they wanted.

When I posted up last week’s blog looking for venues, I was hoping to maybe hear from 2 or 3 bookstores or libraries willing to help me throw a couple signings together. Maybe.

I didn’t expect to get 30-40 offers. While it was terribly flattering, sorting everything out has been a bit of a logistical puzzle.

But I think I’ve finally got it all sussed. Here’s the current list of times and places where I’ll be stopping by to do readings and signings.

As you can see, there’s not a lot of time in between those stops. So I probably won’t be adding any more stops. I’ll hit somewhere in Chicago in maybe a month or two, as that’s relatively close to home and I can just drive down there any old time I feel like it.

I’ve had several people ask, “What exactly do you do at one of these readings?”

So here’s the deal.

First, I drink a strong cup of coffee. Something like a white chocolate mocha with two shots of blackberry and four sugars. This is the source of my power. After one or two of these, I look like something out of Kulba Kahn and can lift up a truck.

Second, I hang out a bit and chat with the people that show up early.

Third (Readings only) I spend about an hour reading stuff and answering questions. What I read really depends on what people are in the mood for. Sometimes I read a few humor columns. Sometimes I read a little poetry. Sometimes I read a bit of one of my books.

In between readings I answer questions about pretty much anything. Sometimes I tell stories. Sometimes I give advice. There are occasional descents into madness.

Fourth, I sign books. Generally speaking, I’ll write whatever you want in a book: a quote from Bast, a profession of my undying love, a letter of recommendation to grad school.

But it’s best if you give me some direction. If you say to me, “Just write whatever…” there is a very real possibility that I will simply write “Whatever” in your book.

I will also try my very best to spell your name correctly. Though sometimes I fuck up.

Caveats and Addendum:

Do not touch my baby. Little Oot will be coming with me to some of these readings and signings. If you see him, you may gaze at him adoringly or coo in his direction. But touching him his not acceptable behavior.

No offense. But I don’t you. I don’t know where you’ve been. I don’t know if you might be sick, or if you’ve been around someone sick. You might be a sociopath. You might be from Illinois.

Here’s the deal. Oot is my first baby, and I’m very protective of him. So when planning your behavior around him, it would be safest if you thought of him as a tiny bear cub, and me as his momma bear. Any sudden movements or over-familiarity might lead to sudden and terrible wrath.

We clear here? Fair warning.

I occasionally cuss. I try to restrain myself if there are tiny kids present. But if the thought of hearing the word “shit” spoken aloud horrifies you, then… well… you’re probably going to be horrified.

My handwriting is not pretty. My handwriting is such that young children mock me for it. Seriously.

You can have a hug if you ask nicely...

…Just don’t get all handsy on me.

Lastly, one request. Since I’m scheduling these events not even two weeks ahead of time, there really isn’t much time for typical promotion to spread the word about them. Most bookstores won’t even be able to get up posters advertising these signings until next week.

So if you know someone that lives in the area who might be interested in coming. I’d be much obliged if you passed the news along to them. It’s always so sad when I get an e-mail that says, “I just found out you were in [insert hometown here]! I can’t believe I missed it!”

Thanks so much for your help everybody,

pat

    Holy crap, actually near me!

I live in Cincinnati, but I might drive to the one in Lexington just for the reading.

I wish you would come to Colorado…specifically Aspen. I could show you around, check out the scenery (you know, beautiful mountains, aspen trees, etc.)…you could do a book reading, signing thingy…and the world would be nigh on perfect. Or you can stay up in those other states (boring).

Your posts always make me laugh. Except for the ones that make me think. Or feel sad. Or other squishy feelings.

    Hmm. Let me start again.

I enjoy reading your posts and hope that your trip goes well. It is too bad that you shall not make it to Chicago this time around, but we will still be here when the opportunity presents itself.

That reminds me, you should come to C2E2. As a patron, I mean. I have no pull with that convention and so cannot invite you to be a guest. I just think that you seem like the kind of guy who would enjoy it.

I'll go stumble off in a corner now in the hopes that I have not made a fool of myself in an attempt to be friendly.

Can't wait to see you again, Pat. I enjoyed the times I saw you in Indy and now I don't have to drive as far. And after wards, I get to join my knitting group at the pub. Hey, you should come there with us. You've not lived until you've seen the combined effects of yarn and hard cider. I'm teasing of course. I hope that you'll have a good time here in Lafayette, at both Borders and Barnes and Noble. Still on for the mini visit at B&N, I hope, because people have been calling us. I'll bring loot eathier way, for your whole little family unit. And make you a mutual no baby touching deal. I get enough random strangers who want to touch the kid. I don't get it. Anyway, have a fun and safe trip!

I really do love your writing, so I'm going to overlook your sissy coffee drink.
Just so you midwesterners know, in the Pacific Northwest we take our coffee very seriously! Your beverage choice indicates that you are a tweleve year old girl. Or really gay. Either of which is fine, but there is ample evidence to the contrary.
Hmph. Today you have changed my way of thinking. Sissies can write really good books and blogs! Who would have guessed?

Although I have never read any of your books, one of my friends who lives in Philly loves you and has been begging me to take her to something on your road trip. ( I live in DC so your original plan basically drove right by me) So thanks for stopping in Springfield, we are going to try to make it.

That being said your bit about your baby made me laugh, I totally understand. My sister just had her baby, and while its not my baby its my only niece, and I am very protective. Her husband is in the army and was in Afghanistan so I went to Germany (where they were stationed) to be with her, (I promis this long rambiling post has a point) anyway we were in the hospital for five days, I got addmitted with mild frostbite after trying to sleep in the car, but to pass the time I read this book I found on how to be a dad, it had everything from how to swaddle to how to encounter a bear with your baby. But your post made me think of the excuses it gave for what to tell to people you dont want to hold your baby. The best of them was, "He has expolsive diahrea, and I really dont want to pay for your drycleaning"

Anyway, have a safe trip, and hopefully we will make it to Springfield.

So much so, that I have convinced myself that I cannot write without that elixir at the ready.

That's some tight driving you've lined up for yourself there – all the best!

And just another piece of advice – don't go to China while Oot is a baby. We had a baby while living there, and took him on trips and he was taken from our arms and passed from person to person, because he was a Da Bizi boy baby. (Da Bizi is generic term – Big Nose – for foreigners).

And generally speaking, so long as they've had their shots, babies are pretty resilient, and the more germs they are exposed to, the better their resistance. One of the theories behind the explosion in rates of asthma/eczema/allergies is that we make our environments too anti-bacterial. So maybe chill a little on that one?

That said, if you want Oot present but unmolested, it's probably a good idea to nominate a designated picker-upper to keep him happy if he wakes or is a bit grumbly. I'm guessing his mother may be taking a well-earned rest?

Writing "whatever" in a book might not be so bad, unless it makes someone confuse you with John Scalzi.

One of my daughter's most prized possessions is the book she had signed by Terry Pratchett. He asked how she wanted it inscribed, and she said "just Tess." So that's what it says "Just Tess. Terry Pratchett." Every time we see it, we remember the whole experience. That's the best thing about a book signing.

Oh why can't I live in America? If I could I would move there just to go to one of your signings!
Why don't you come to Scotland! Cause, y'know we have…umm…highland cows! and sheep! and umm…umm…Scots? Am I selling this idea well?:P
Enjoy your road trip and the wedding!

You weren't expecting that many invites? Pat, you seem to not quite grasp what a big time success you are. The golden ticket auction was the first clue!

I just came here out of worry, having not ready anything on your blog about the CageMatch [on Suvudu], I feared us fans may not be able to do our part.

Then I saw Brooke and Maurine's posts above. Whoop!

Come on Guys, Kvothe can totally do this.

Cool! See you in Frederick, Maryland on the 23rd! We've chatted before in email, but now it will happen in person. I will not touch Oot and you will not touch my 8 month old son.

I've tried thinking of many ways to say this without sounding desperate, but…
    Come to Canada please?

Obviously not anytime soon 'cause you're busy with life and stuff but you're greatly appreciated here and it would probably mean the world to me if you managed to come to Vancouver BC.

Anyway, thanks for all the updates. Not to mention your books!

I am not sure about the etiquette regarding asking questions in the comment section of a blog (I apologize if this is not the right spot for it), but I am very curious: What is the funniest/your favorite thing that you have ever been asked to write in one of your books?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to New York / New Haven / Philadelphia. Somewhere I can get to. Somewhere I can get to hear you read from your beautiful books. Somewhere I can get you to sign my book.

Please. The audiences will be huge. People on the east coast need to be placated by a reading. We would come out in droves to see you.

I go to school is Washington, DC and I am so happy you have Springfield, VA listed as that bookstore is two blocks from the Metro! However, it does say "not-confirmed." All I ask is that if the venue is changed, it's somewhere Metro accessible. Living in the city means no car :(

If you ever choose to do the Great Circle Route Copper Harbor, MI is a few miles down the road from you and Maggie would have baked, roasted, braised and sauteed about anything you could think of to make you welcome. Most Canadians are even south of us from here and the north pole isn't far – I know there must be more than a few crew members on subs of various navies that would surface there for a book signing/reading! Think of the possibilities for promoting peace and brotherhood!
I made a trip to GA when my boys were 1-1/2 and 3 yrs old and did fine with them – even camping out on a mountaintop in Tennessee (mom was working.) I bless you on your trip with whatever god(s) looked on me then and made that trip so enjoyable. Thanks for the stories.

First of all, I'll hopefully make it to your March 22nd signing. I'll try my best to come up with something witty for you to write, but I wouldn't mind a "Whatever" followed by a signature.

That being said, this bugs me:

    "No offense. But I don't you. I don't know where you've been."

I'm not commenting on what is being said; I wouldn't let a stranger (especially not the sweaty, unwashed, fantasy-reading, book-signing-attending stranger) touch my baby…I'm talking about the typo.

Now I am not an author, and I'm not even a particularly good writer, (my web browser auto-corrected me when I butchered the spelling of "particularly"), but when a medium as formal as the mighty Blog is used, I expect at least an editing read-through over before hitting submit.

Just in case it doesn't come across, I am attempting to be sarcastic. I'm may be an asshole, but I could care less if you blog informally. I think you should type your next one completely in chat acronyms or leetspeak. Or Latin.

ey up. your readings sound good, i'm afraid I don't have much to say here cuz i've never been. I've read loads of books and I probably had a number of opportunities to go to the signings/readings/whatever of the authors of these books and i've never read a book without having a question or two. But normally I try to answer it myself coming up with cool ideas to solve the problem, or if its just a bad decision/mistake i just try and ignore it. But when I have felt the urge to ask the question, normally by writing, I'm almost always disappointed with the answer, sometimes its better not to see not to see too much of the mind behind a book cuz it takes away from the imagination. I seem to remember having asked u summat, i don't remember exactly what it was but your answer wasn't really an answer. whatever. huh, weird, and I said I didnt have a lot to say, shows how much I know.

Have a safe trip! Should be quite the adventure for little Oot. :)

Curses, if only you were coming to Louisville rather than Lexington. Or if you were in Lexington on a weekend, when I could make the trip. Grumble, grumble…Lexington may have a castle house, sir, but Louisville is far better (in other words more convenient for me).

You should totally come to Charlottesville between Norfolk/Va Beach and Springfield. March 17-21 is the "Virginia Festival of the Book" it would be very cool on a chat-with-peers and chat-with-fans/make-new-fans level.

    http://www.vabook.org

Besides that, Charlottesville is awesome. Beautiful campus of the Univ. of Virginia, founded by, designed by and near the home of Thomas Jefferson.

    Cheers,

If in future tours, you include Denver Colorado into your itinerary, I promise to have the citizens of this fair city, lavish you with fine beer and tapestries. Well, beer for certain.

Of course, very much realize Colorado is out of the way and you can't very well see every city. However, little known fact, everyone that visits Denver gets a mountain named after them. So, you know, keep that in mind.
