Books for Boobs

Sometimes I write a great blog and then struggle over the title for a ridiculous amount of time before eventually settling on something vaguely mediocre.

Other times, I write the title first and then think to myself, “Well, that pretty much says it all. Everything is going to be downhill from there.”

This is one of those times.

Earlier today someone sent me a message saying, “Are you going to blog about the books for boobs thing you did?”

My first thought was, “What the hell are they talking about? Was this something I did at a convention when I was really sleep deprived and crazy on sugary mochas? What did I do?”

I thought about it for a minute and dragged up a memory from a convention last July. “How the hell did they find out about that?” I thought to myself. “Did someone get pictures and post them on their blog?”

Luckily, it turns out I was thinking of something entirely different. But that, as they say, is a story for another time.

Books for Boobs is a charity event I donated a book to last year. They’re auctioning off stuff from different authors, including Jim Butcher, Brandon Sanderson, my mortal enemy Anton Strout, and the recently mentioned Amber Benson.

I recommend you go and check it out if only because I look kinda good in the picture they took of me. Forgive me my tiny moment of vanity, but it’s such a rare treat for me to see a picture of myself that doesn’t make me look like a bloody shambles.

Here’s the link.

Have a great weekend everybody….

While getting rid of cancer is a noble cause, I was certainly disappointed by the blog title.

A post containing the word boobs is worthless without pictures.

    1. That is a classy beard. I think I can hear Brian Blessed bellowing with envy…

No. Wait. that’s just his normal voice.

    2. Books for Boobs is probably so spectacularly awesome because it combines two of my very favourite things in the entire world, and does so for a worth-enough cause that I’m going to slap it with some Kangaroo Monies.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Pat!

Dear Patrick (may I call you Patrick?)
I was looking for “The road to levenshir” on internet, since you seem to take your time on “The wise man’s fear” and I ended up on a website made by some one who seem to hate your work. I paste here the complete comment that he made about “The road to Levenshir”:
“The Road to Levenshir” by Patrick Rothfuss. Oh God. The second worst story in the book. Maybe the worst. At least “Windseekers” is original. Set in vaguely medieval times (in an SCA-ish sort of way) we follow our troubadour hero as he encounters some bad guys pretending to be his people, the Edema Ruh (read “gypsies”); he rescues two girls and teaches some townsfolk the error of their ways. And this is also an excerpt from a LONGER novel. Aaaarrrggghhh!
No need to say tha I strongly desagree with his opignion, even though I haven’t read it yet, being a big fan of “The name of the wind” I am pretty sure “The road to Levenshir” deserve all the praise and I am looking forward for the Wise man’s fear. Hopefully I won’t wait for to long.(Just kidding, take your time).

Very nice, but I am quite unsure of this “Books for Boobs” thing. I’ve known about them for quite some time, and have sent them many many books, but have to receive anything back….

oh and the above post by (Rodney) made me throw up in my mouth a little. It’s not that I don’t think Pat could handle a little constructive criticism (although he is rather fragile), it’s the whole “oh! but this actually a complement” charade…whatever, it’s dumb. Though I will give Rodney credit for being the most convoluted way of telling someone they suck that I’ve ever read.

Justin: As the person running this Books For Boobs project, I believe you’re confusing us with another group. Although I’ve been gathering books for some nine months now, I only started calling the project “Books for Boobs” a few weeks ago, and I’ve only ever solicited or received books long-distance in one instance, with the Butchers. We’re not the same project you sent your books to!

Unless you were making some joke about receiving boobs in exchange for books, and I should just not post things on the internet at 2am. :D

Pat: Thanks so much for spreading the word! Glad you like the photo. :D

    Amazing picture!
It got me thinking, wouldn’t that photo fit right in a motivational poster?

    Imagine :

    -Teddybeards –

How many children, do you suppose, have carried a lifelong resentment of parents responsible for the surreptitious removal of their Teddy Beards?

    – John Ziff

    -Teddybeards-

“Happy” seems to epitomize the sheer beauty and character we all seek in our teddy beard -gaze into those great big eyes and your heart just melts!

    – Margaret and Gerry Gray (adapted version)

I must say, to my amazement, there are vast amounts of Teddy Bear quotes on the internet, and they need little alteration to fit right in with the Teddybeard category.

    Love your work Pat,

    Take care!

Man you’re completly wrong, I have read The Name Of The Wind twice now and I can’t wait for the next book. What I have written about The Road To Levenshir was on a website, and I do not share this view at all. If I didn’t like TNOW stylle, I wouldn’t waste my time on Pat’s blog or looking for TRTL.

    • Posted April 23, 2010 at 7:13 AM | Permalink

ok, then I hope I’m completely wrong, and I apologize. If you read this blog (or other author blogs) often then you will know exactly why the red flags went up when I read your post, and the type of post I associated it with.

Sorry guys I didn’t think it would offend anybody, I the comment on this website needed to be shared because I have never read anything bad about TNOW and since I was looking for TRTL I was quite surprise by the comment. But Max cleared everythings up.

Rodny, I loved NOTW but was disappointed by Road to Levinshir. I just don’t think it had all the polish that NOTW and now Wise Man’s Fear have recieved. It’s a chapter of Wise Man’s Fear, but from several years ago. Now that the book has been polished these few years, I imagine that chapter in WMF will be much more readable.

    Patrick,
Of course its just my opinion, but I don’t think that’s the best pic of you ever. I think its the tiny teddy. Accessories make the man. Just an opinion.

    Rodney,
Why in world would feel the need to share that piece of tripe? We could all have lived an eternity without it.

My first thought upon reading the title was this: “Books for boobs? I have boobs. Can I get books with them?” Promptly followed with a somewhat shameful sense of glee. I support the use of books to protect boobs. Now if there was only a way to use my boobs to protect books…

I thought the same thing!! As a bartender, the boobs helped pay my rent, but it had never occured to be that they could get me books!!

I often use my boobs to support/balance stacks of books that I’m carrying, but I FULLY SUPPORT the idea that my boobs could somehow get me books! Maybe we could work something out with Pat for preview chapters of WMF… correlate the number of chapters to cup-size and presentation?

      *just kidding*

Having been a bearded man off and on for the past ten years, I have to say, that your beard puts mine to shame. I am completely unable to grow my whiskers beyond an inch and a half. And I just don’t have the guts to let it do what it wants.

I’m constantly grooming it, shaving off the thin bits, and using a number 1.5 to keep it nice and short. Lately, I’ve been growing it from a clean shave to get that scruffy look that my fiance likes, and then shaving it back to clean again when she starts to get road-rash on her face.

On a not entirely different note, I will say, in a completely-hetero-man-to-man-one-guy-telling-another-guy-that-he-would-totally-do-him-if-he-was-gay-but-is-not-so the other-guy-doesn’t-need-to-feel-awkward-or-anything kind of way, that that IS a great picture of you.

    Thanks for the blog.

I always love your blog, I read it every time you update.

    Hi Pat!

As a first time poster (long-time lurker), I wanted to chime in with two things: 1-You, your books, and your efforts to promote both boobs and farm-animal based quality-of-life are all mega-awesome. Seriously.
2- I noticed in a snarky way that your mortal enemy was not only too terrified to pose for a photograph (no doubt lest legions of Rothfussians track him down to exact a great and terrible vengeance upon him) but that your book is currently commanding a masterful fifty-one dollars-more than any of the others I checked out-, while his languishes at less than half that sum.

    * I do realize that your overwhelming fondness for boobs will lead you to put your personal vendetta aside long enough to wish for his eventual fundraising success, but I hope the knowledge gives you at least a moment of glee.

    Hey Patrick,

My name is Igor and I am editor of Lit! Magazine, a Brazilian publication dedicated exclusively to books. Our mission is to make people take reading as a habit of their routines and, therefore, hold events, lectures, tips from books, interviews and more.
We wonder if we could give an interview. For the next volume, we have already confirmed interviews with Lionel Shriver, Alyson Noël and Charlaine Harris and and have you next to these writers would be an immense pleasure. Please send an email to revistalit.contato @ gmail.com with your answer.

    We await your contact

    Thank you for your attention

    Igor Silva

P.S.: We were in doubt about something. It would be an honor that would autograph a copy of his book to sorteássemos among our readers. However, you state in your blog only sign books for fans. We may send you a copy to autograph? And in this case, only $ 7.00 would be enough to cover the post?

He’s said numerous times that their is no set release date for the book on this blog as well as others. Though you claim to be lazy (which i think is bull), it seems to me it’s MORE work to go to this blog and type out this message and wait for a reply (which, if there is righteous justice, in all likelihood should not come) and come back to look at the possible reply, than to simply go to Google and type in “Wise Man’s Fear release date,” finding multiple sources to your question without looking like a jackass (which you sound like btw).

Hello Pat (May I call you Pat ? It is my first time commenting in your blog cause I didnt have the time to register before)

Anyway, since is my first time speaking here, I feel like I have to talk a little bit about your book (and I know you are probably tired). Before I start going on and on about the book, I would like to make it clear that I am not an english speaker, well, english is not my first language. Im Brazilian, and I lived in the U.S for one year, five years ago. Nowadays I work in an American company in Brazil, so I have to speak english once in a while, but I know is not perfect.

That being said, let’s start with the book:
    – Im not going to compare to other books i’ve read, cause in my humble opinion, it is different from everything I’ve read. And my father gave to me and said it was an amazing book and I should read it cause I would enjoy it. So I started reading, with no expectations, I was just reading it. When I realized, I couldnt stop. I would stop for a little while to watch Grey’s Anatomy or 30 Rock, and 5 min after the show started, I would caught myself thinking: “What if he is going to kill a dragon next? Or save the princess? What if he will wont make it trough next semester in the university? What if he will never be able to access the one thousand books available? Or if he finds the chandriano? What if, what if??? All those questions kept me from watching TV, or going online. I wanted to know so badly what would come next!!!! And you know what was my favorite part of the book??? THE END. And u know why??? Because is not the end. And i didnt know it was only the first of day of the story. I didnt pay attention to the title, and of course Im in Brazil, and books here never makes the news. So, with this comment I would just like to thank u Pat, for providing society with such a good book, or books!

I will patiently wait for the second book, cause I do know it will be worthed.

    regards, Catarina.
