A Handful of Fanmail

I’ve got two pieces of mail, both of which should be answered sooner rather than later. So today we’re going to have a twofer.

Let’s do it.

Pat,

I missed your signing in Waukesha! I had a UFO come up at the last minute and wasn’t able to make it. (UFO = Unavoidable Family Obligation.)

My major problem is that I wanted to buy a signed book as a present for my boyfriend, who got me hooked on your book about a year ago. But now, when I’m catching up on your blog, I see that you had copies of the princess book there, too! I’m heartbroken!

Was it cool? I bet it was cool…

The point of my e-mail is to ask you if you’ll please come back to Milwaukee soon? Pretty Please?

Nat

It’s too bad you missed it, Nat. It was pretty cool. Everyone that showed up got an early copy of The Wise Man’s Fear and a backrub. Batman showed up too. He brought oatmeal raisin cookies and taught us all how to shatter a man’s hip using a broken-0ff chair leg.

So yeah, as far as my readings go, it was pretty much average.

I’m sorry you weren’t able to make it, but I don’t know soon I’ll be down in that area again. Logistically, it makes better sense for me to spread around my readings a bit, as it gives people in different areas a chance to attend.

I’ll probably do something down in Chicago before too long. Sarah wants to take Oot to the aquarium there, so I might as well do a little reading and signing while I’m in the area. (If anyone has a favorite bookstore in Chicago where they think I should stop, they can mention that in the comments below.)

Anyway, my point is I probably won’t be doing another reading in Milwaukee for months. But if you keep an eye on the blog and tour schedule page, you should be able to catch me when I’m somewhere nearby.

And if you still want a signed book for your boyfriend, you might want to check out Martha Merrell’s Bookstore. They brought in books for my signing down in Waukesha. And before I left, I signed a bunch of their stock. So they should have a bunch of my signed books still in the store.

They even have a few signed copies of the princess book, if you think your boyfriend would like one of those. It’s probably the only store in the country with those on the shelf right now.

Letter #2

Master Rothfuss,

I’ve been bad. I haven’t been keeping up on your blog, and consequently, I only today found out about your t-shirt design contest.

I desperately want to enter a design or two. But your blog says that the cutoff for entries is… today.

Can you please stretch out the deadline a bit for us sad, sorry losers that don’t check your blog as frequently now that school is out?

I promise it will be worth your while. I’m a graphic design major. I seriously do art and stuff.

In desperate minionhood,

Rich

(For those of you who are hopelessly out of the loop, here’s the blog where I talk about having a t-shirt design contest.)

This is what happens when you’re a lackluster minion, Rich. It’s because of people like you that the death star gets blown up.

Hmmm… I’m guessing that’s not the best example.

My point is that checking the blog should be an essential part of your life by now. You should treat my blog like your second job. You should revel in my blog with the same obsessive-compulsive fervor Sarah uses when I bring a bag of Cheetos into the house.

Seriously. She’s a freak for Cheetos. It’s like watching a very dainty shark.

Anyway, as I am a benevolent overlord, I realize my original two-week deadline was a little tight for some people. I’ve had several letters like this in the last few days, asking for a little extra time to complete designs.

So here’s the deal: I’ll extend the deadline for t-shirt submissions until the end of the month.

Two things to consider:

1. You’ve got your work cut out for you. We’ve had more than 100 designs submitted in the last week, and honestly, I’ve been really impressed. People came up with things I never would have thought of….

That means if you’re coming in under the wire, you better bring your A-game.

2. From this point on, we’ll only accept actual picture-type designs. We’ve got plenty of text descriptions right now. Over this next week, I’ll be turning over the best of these to our team of talented artists. They’ll work their magic, and early next month we’ll put the cream of the crop up here on the blog for people to ogle and vote upon.

Later everybody,

pat

Recommendation for a Chicago site for your book signing… Anderson’s BookShop in Naperville. They get a ton of great Author’s in there and it is a great place to meet Authors. There is not a ton of room but if demand is big enough, they move to an auditorium in town!!! I live an hour or so from there but we go all the time to see great authors. (Christopher Paolini, Anne Rice, Nora Roberts, Dean Koontz have all been there and many more.

    Here is their contact information:

    123 West Jefferson Avenue

Great authors? Christopher Paolini? An author, to be sure, but great?
I have no objection to this venue except for the fact that it isn’t Toronto or Ottawa.

I second the recommendation for Anderson’s Bookstore! I loved going there when I lived in Illinois.

Here’s another great bookstore that I recently realized is still in existence:
BrainSnacks -not your typical bookstore. It moved twice, and then I thought it shut down. Apparently the owner is still running it out of her home.
It’s a mystery, science fiction, fantasy and children’s bookstore: http://www.brnsncks.com/index.html

Tell Sarah that if she wants to go to the aquarium that she has to get there ASS early. We tried to go a month or two ago and there were 1000s waiting in line by 11. We ended up giving up and going to the Natural History Museum instead (taxidermy not my idea of fun).

Hey Pat, I feel a strange compulsion to comment about your forthcoming trip to Chicago. I’m a freak for Moroccan food because it rocks! If you’ve never tried Moroccan food, and you’re into an occasional eclectic dining experience, then I’d like to extol the cuisine of the Shokran Moroccan Grill in the Irving Park suburb. Shokran means “thank you” in arabic. Here’s the link. I was very impressed with the B’stilla (bah-STEE-yah) appetizer, which is my fav, although theirs was on the smaller side. My buddy said the lamb was “amazing”, and we all enjoyed the sweet mint tea for our beverage.

Sorry I’m a little off topic. I’m not directly trying to advertise here. I have no tie to the restaurant, and I know the ramifications of the dreaded “Mod parent down”. But if you’re a foodie, I’m just hoping I can do you a favor. That said, we all know Chicago has a plethora of great places to eat, and you may already have several favorites, so I could see it if you want to stick with what you know.

    Eat victoriously.

I think it’s a compliment. I mean, Snoopy was the first Joe Cool. Snoopy could change a Peanuts comic strip from a depressing tale of a wishy-washy, round-headed kid to a cute story of a sad kid with a funny dog in just one frame.

Also, there’s a good chance the book “doesn’t make any goddamn sense” because said commenter is illiterate, or at the very least incapable of gleaning pleasure from reading.

For your Chicago trip, there are a lot of good options downtown. And while some people may fuss and throw a fit about downtown, it’s still the best choice overall. It’s much easier for more people to get somewhere that’s in the Loop, as opposed to everyone trying to hump to some bookstore in Naperville or Oakbrook or wherever else that is NOT the Loop.

That said, the Borders on State & Randolph is pretty awesome and is well set up for doing signings. Same for Borders on Michigan & Pearson. If you’re looking for a smaller, independent shop, there are a couple I like downtown. One is After Words, 23 E. Illinois. There is also Brent’s Book & Cards at 309 W. Washington. And last but not least, if we’re putting in for a bookstore not as downtown but still in the city and easily accessible via public transportation, I like Unabridged at 3251 N. Broadway a lot.

I could do restaurant recs like someone before me did too, but that could seriously take up like 5 pages.

The Pawn’s Triumph is amazing, and I want one.

The Lute is a nice reference, but I wouldn’t buy it. Just a personal opinion thing . . .

    Cheers,

Hey! I’m a Cheeto Shark, too! It’s the yummy, yummy MSG. Seriously. My husband bought some sort of ‘natural’ ones once, probably because I typically go for that sort of thing. Godawful. They didn’t taste all that different, and the texture was nice, but no MSG, no feeding frenzy. Does Sarah like Mallow Cups, too? ‘Cause then I’d start to suspect that we were separated at birth…

Ok, so I tried to email my pic, but something didn’t happen right, not sure if I got the right address, or if it is still up and running, hopefully it is, because the new deadline is coming up soon and I really want to enter my design in.

My Princess and Mr Whiffle just came in today, tra la! Very fun. Especially love the gold sticker.

My eight-year-old hovered around until I’d finished it, and then I let her read it. (She’s mad at me because I won’t let her read Pendragon b/c of the dumb violence in it; but Princess seems more in line with the Far Side cartoons she adores.)

The title and subtitle suggest that there will be continuing adventures; that true?

Hi, can someone help me find Pat’s email? I can’t seem to find it and I wanted to send a design in.

I find it nifty that someone used a T-Shirt design incorporating a chess metaphor. I have a tattoo that says “Be Wary of Folly” around a black king standing triumphant over a white king. While it would be a bit redundant if I wore it, I would purchase said shirt, kudos on the design.
