I was going to post up a little story about my recent Halloween adventures at Neil Gaiman’s House on the Rock shindig. But I can’t find the right pictures I need to illustrate it, so I’m guessing it will have to wait a little bit.
In the meantime, I have a link to a video of the panel I was on about Contemporary Mythology.
I post this link with some trepidation, as I don’t remember exactly what I might have said on the panel. This isn’t anything odd. I rarely remember more than a few snippets after I’m done speaking on a panel. But the snippets I remember from this panel particular panel make me vaguely uneasy. I dimly remember saying something about “the revolution” and something else along the lines of “you can all roll around in your own filth if you want.”
Soooo…. yeah. It seems like I should remember more than a handful of words out of a 45 minute panel. But I don’t. I wonder if that’s weird. Maybe I have a disorder or something.
Anyway, feel free to watch it if you’re interested.
The picture is a little fuzzy, but then again, so am I….

Hopefully you had a good Halloween. In what costume did you dress Oot?
I think it would have been cleaver to put a small fake beard on him.
Totally bad-ass panel, it was. The Revolution comment was largely in response to the discussion concerning media figures being used as replacements for gods and heroes in today’s modern mythologies and that finally degenerating down to Reality TV stars and that when the Revolution comes the Housewives of Orange County will be the first against the wall.
Also: the Group Costume (including Oot) was totally awesome. Unfortunately we liked all 40 of the finalists and decided everyone deserved to win and went in search of food, so I didn’t stay to see who all won.
Friday night at the reading, Oot totally stole the show running down the aisle. We didn’t even notice Neil coming in the tent.
Yeah, I was gonna say: I’m the one who actually said that come the revolution the Real Housewives will be first against the wall, so you look *really* sane by comparison.
Pat, this is bizarre. When I read the title “Contemporary Mythology,” I did a double-take. I am writing a paper connecting contemporary art to mythological ideas such as the Nietzschean (found in The Birth of Tragedy) Apollonian-Dionysian spectrum of Classical mythology. Very strange. Anyhow, now I’m going to watch the video so that I can determine how “off” I am in interpreting the post’s title.
I love stuff like this. Early in the discussion you made a reference to the fact that nobody takes license and makes up their own stories about Jesus, (which is very true today). If anyone is interested in reading a story that does take liberty with the idea of Jesus, though, underground Muslims in Spain during the Inquisition actually did that. The story itself is a really interesting blend of Christian and Muslim mythology and secular influences. I did the translation myself, (ha, yes, self plug I know – but no one else has done it, and it’s something I’m rather proud of.) It’s on page 11 of my thesis :
https://scholarsbank.uoregon.edu/xmlui/handle/1794/9962
(I have no idea how to make this a link, but copy/paste should work fine.)
Also… “Farmville is the mental equivalent of empty calories… and nervous eating.” So good.
pat, you know I love you, but when you have an idea for a blog but say, “I’m guessing it will have to wait a little bit”, that means it’s never going to see the light of day. :)
I think Pat’s gonna be that crazy author in fifteen or twenty years that lives in the forest, suvives on the leaves of some crazy bush, and is randomly videotaped running naked through the campgrounds of families yelling “the smores are poisoned with the blood of orpheus!” Then he’ll release some crazy good book, go on a book tour, start his own cult and become born again. Then someone will decide to make a movie about his life, they’ll get Zac Efron to star in it, and Pat will get so enraged he’ll be arrested for sending him an exploding pen with a level 4 contaminate.
Watch. It’ll happen. I’m telling you.
Did I mention how absolutely thrilling it was to chat with you a couple times at the Con? 0.0 (Yes, I’m the blue-haired crazy girl that volunteered as your fangirl for the Con ^_^) Don’t worry, at the panel you thrilled us with your amazing wit and brilliance, as per usual.
My mother has a couple fantastic shots of Oot, BTdubs, if you’d like them.
Hah. I wish you had a disorder because then it might be possible for more people to contract it!
Also, a friend pondered the idea of you dressing Oot as a vaguely defined “mini-Pat” to which I replied that the more appropriate collaboration would be you dressing up as Mega-Oot.
I had sort of a meta experience watching this panel, reacting and feeling exactly the way the panelists said idols make us react and feel to the things the panelists were saying about how we react to and feel about our idols. And then I saw God.
Was I the only one who got a definite Dora the Explorer vibe from “There have to be more of these . . . can anyone think of them?”?
Awesome panel.
Hi Pat i’m a spanish fan and i’d like to know if The wise man’s fear are going to be translated to the spanish, in Spain the book has saled 160.000 books and we’re waiting the second book, i’m hoping the book doesn’t late very much in be translated.
Thanks.
It might take a while to be translated, but less that the first book.
Pat,
Do you have links to your fellow panelists Blogs/websites? I found this very interesting and would not mind reading some of their stuff.
Thanks for the brilliance,
Steve
I hope Pat won’t mind me responding: the lovely and brilliant Mrs. Brinnehl (HA!) can be found at:

Great panel, loved the topic. Very interesting discussion about something I had never really thought about before.
The comments about Farmville reminded me of a Tobuscus video I watched a while back. Has anyone else seen that? (It’s on Youtube.) That sort of thing says a lot about society today.
