So right now I’m in a hotel in New York.
I’ve been away from home for about a week. I’ve gone from a booksigning to a convention, then off to my publisher to do some promotional stuff for book two.
While I was out here, guess what I got to see for the first time?
This is it folks. The real thing. One of the first copies of The Wise Man’s Fear to come off the press. The first one I’ve ever held.
It’s a gorgeous book. It’s heavier than The Name of the Wind. The paper feels good against my fingers.
Needless to say, I’m fond of it…
Tomorrow I’m flying home. It’s nice to see the book, but tomorrow I’m really looking forward to seeing Oot again.
More soon,
pat

I must have it. And as Amazon as my merchant, I will!
February is a short month, so only 34 days to go!
Dear Pat,
This is your thumbs’ agent, why were all the other digits given a photo op and the star of the show given no exposure ? Rest assured you have not heard the end of this matter !
Also, have fun with Oot and don’t forget to buy something nice for your lady. Save some energy for the tour dude, you’re going to need it. Book looks incredible, can’t explain how badly Ineed to get my grubby little paws one my own….Amazon had better be on the ball on release day !!!!
the way those fingers are positioned, I think it would be impossible for that hand (a right hand) to be pat’s while he took the picture. Plus, it doesn’t resemble a bear claw in the least.
obviously, this photo is shopped. :|
drool :-), awesome dude – not long to go!
Congratulation Pat. The Name of The Wind literally took my breath away when I randomly picked it off a shelf at Barnes and Nobles and I have been waiting for this one ever since. Hopefully now you can take some time off and enjoy Oot and Sarah before being hammered with requests for book three =).
Awesome. Is there a chance that you would give us the page count?
Amazon says 1008
I could be mistaken but I believe Amazon has been saying that for about six months now.
Yeah. Amazon is wrong. It’s 900 something. I’ll post that up on Friday’s blog…
It looks delicious, yesss.
Neat. I’ll try to get my ~totally~ worthy hands on this as soon as I can – preferably both the English (naturally) and the Swedish one.
Awesome. Can’t wait for March!
Congratulations! Now the real question: is it longer than Way of Kings? ;)
On it being longer than the Way of Kings…. here is what Brandon Sanderson had to say about that a few days ago…
BrandonSandrson Mon Jan 17
It should be noted that this ARC of Wise Man’s Fear is 1100 pgs long, 100 more than The Way of Kings. THE GAUNTLET HAS BEEN THROWN DOWN.
Yes, which is why I asked. ARC are not always the same as final product.
cool,
I have to confess, when I saw the blog title I became as exited as a child on christmas morning.
I thought you had posted up the first of many sample chapters. Now that I have calmed down a bit, I realise a reread of TNOWwould be warranted, before I read TWMF
Does anyone know if there will be sample chapters? Would they go through the publishers website?
I haven’t seen any but really hoping!!!!
There is one sample chapter, Pat’s entry in the Writers of the Future contest from before NotW came out. It’s really good and shows a side of Kvothe that is very differnt from what we know. Much darker.
Pat has never mentioned any sample chapters and with the release only a month away I doubt there will be any.
Yes, that is the Road to Levinshir. There was another sample posted online at one point several years ago, in which Kvothe meets Puppet. However, Patrick asked for it to be taken down because he had much extensive editing to do. I don’t know if you’d be able to find a version of that online anymore, but maybe. I fortunately saved it to my desktop when it was still available, but I would never share it without Pat’s permission. Both of those sample chapters are years out of date, though.
Not even for…ONE MILLION DOLLARS?!?
Oh, yeah, I found that thing with Puppet last year somewhere. I think I emailed it to my sister or something, at the time.
I didn’t hear about that one. I’m excited to meet puppet… only 32 more days!
I’m impressed you can heft it with one hand, especially after signing so many copies! You said it was three pounds in paperback ARC format–how much does it weigh in hardcover?
Hope my city treated you right and that the snow doesn’t get between you and Oot. Travel safe!
Careful getting home…….Snow is starting to pick up here……Looking forward to Book II…..If your flight gets delayed you have a standing invitation for a NY lunch today……Just finished both Acacia books based upon your recommendation and would love to pick your brain about them!
So as my father is fond of saying….There is no rest for the wicked…When will book 3 be out? :)
Looks great, can’t wait.
Bad Bendan. No soup for you.
hee… hee
And in my SAC (smart a** comment) I even misspell your name.
awww that should be in my hand, damn the publishing world and its delays!
So pretty…
I’ll probably have to get it from the library. I hate being broke.
Oh wait! I just remembered! Tax return!
When I first saw the title, I read it as “The First of May,” and I panicked a bit, thinking wait, I thought it came out the first of March! Glad it was only my overactive imagination…and I hope it’s the first of very, very many.
I was just about to make a comment about you intentionally leaving your thumb out of this shot – but it looks like Mickey beat me to it….garn.
It fills me with the warm squigglies that you’ve got your hands on the first copy. I think it says many nice things that you more wish to be home with the baban. Whooo Pat! *Waves his imaginary [no, really, honest….{cough}] pom-poms.
Total Eye-Gasm!
I’ve had your Boston tour date on my calendar for ages it seems now. I’ve never been so excited to go to a speaker/reading/etc in my life, and some cool people came to talk while I was at Georgetown. I promise to try not to geek out too badly when I get there, but I can almost surely promise to fail at that.
The cover art looks brilliant, can’t wait to read Wise Man’s Fear!
Oh my… it is beautiful.
I’m confused. The hand is covering the bottom, so I’m now unsure if this is a novel? Please confirm.
Wonderful!
And enjoy your reunion with Oot!
*cries out in joy* Its heavier than the first! More beautiful pages to keep me up at night. I am so excited, I don’t think I’ll sleep until its here. Oh and I can’t thank you enough Patrick for opening my eyes to the wonder that is Girl Genius. Many many thanks.
…the precious… must have it…
Wow! Just…. WOW!! I can’t believe it’s almost here!! I took a week off work so i can try to read it before the March 9th signing. Then of course I took a personal day March 9th. I’m so stoked!! Is anyone else planning to go to that one?
Holy cow, that’s dedication! I’m hoping to grab a couple friends and head over after work :)
You’re fond of it or you fondled it? Cuz really, either one works for me.
I too am sitting in a NYC hotel, having been away from home for entirely too long (2 1/2 weeks). I hope the snow storm does not thwart your travel plans. Home and hearth is easier to appreciate when you’ve been away.
Thank you for sharing the first tactile sensations of Wise Man’s Fear. I look forward to having my copy soon.
Congrats Pat. I can’t wait to read the final product! :)
I feel an unfamiliar tickle in my pants…I’m soooo excited!
Ah Pat, how cruel you are. Mocking us like this…
Congrats Pat. As everyone else is, I’m looking forward to reading The Wise Man’s Fear, as well as the rest of the story when it is ready.
Several blogs ago – around August? – you said you met Christopher Paolini and had a conversation, or a lunch. Words were traded, that’s the point. Several of your readers were really curious what your experience was with him, especially those of us who really despise his writing and lack of storytelling; it’s more a listing of events.
I know you’ve been busy, but I’m anxious to hear your debriefing and comments on the occasion and what-not.
Thanks!
I hope the snow storm hasn’t delayed your return to Oot! In case it has, I will gladly offer you a home-cooked meal. And I promise not to search your person for that copy of WMF, or even pick your brain (too much). Good luck with your travels!
I just read The Name of the Wind this week. (Thanks to a friend’s recommendation) It was an awesome story and I can’t wait to read the next one.
Also, thanks for introducing me to the world of Pern in the book acknowledgements. I’m not sure how I missed the existence of that whole series for so many years!
Awesome! Great time to re read The Name of The Wind ;)
It seems like only three years ago that I was telling myself, “Only three more years!” And now the time is almost here! This is going to be an awesome year for fantasy lovers. Even GRRM is giving us an HBO series.
Aaaaaah, I wanna freak out every time I think of how long it is going to take until the WMF is released in portuguese here in Brazil. My brothers and dad would chop my head off if I bought it in English. But I think that’s exactly what I’m going to do. :D I’m going to the US in June, so I’ll buy it, put the cover of some other unpleasant book over it and read it under the blankets!
At first, my only comment was going to be, “%#@% yeah!”
I do actually have a question though, being an independent musician in years past, Pat, is there a way that we can buy WMF that maximizes either the money you see back to yourself and your family, or the benefit you get from the purchase? I plan on making it out to see you in Houston, TX if picking it up from a reading is the answer.
I have been strictly told that, as a student teacher, it is painfully unprofessional and unacceptable for me to take off of work for anything less than family death or extremely violent illness.
So I guess I’m going to teach on no sleep that day. Or give them a “work day.” Either way, it’s gonna be a pleasant day for all involved :)
I hear that a dark room is a happy room. A little adjustment of those lesson plans could yield some excellent at-work reading time. (See paulaburatto above, with the fake book cover.)
Hey now, teachers are people too ! If you got to drug the little pishers with sweets and cake and let them run around until they pass out…who can blame you ? It is after all The Day of the Release of The Wise Mans Fear !!! ( TDotRoTWMF )
*gasp* the book! *bows at its holly sight* This brings tears of joy and many many other emotions that make me just getty with just the site of it. My hope is that once you hit the great NW of usa that we may hear its wishdom.
Hi !
I would like to know something about The Wise Man’s Fear…
When it will be translate in french?
Don’t forget, in france we wait this book too… Don’t forget us !!!!!!
