The First of Many….

So right now I’m in a hotel in New York.

I’ve been away from home for about a week. I’ve gone from a booksigning to a convention, then off to my publisher to do some promotional stuff for book two.

While I was out here, guess what I got to see for the first time?

This is it folks. The real thing. One of the first copies of The Wise Man’s Fear to come off the press. The first one I’ve ever held.

It’s a gorgeous book. It’s heavier than The Name of the Wind. The paper feels good against my fingers.

Needless to say, I’m fond of it…

Tomorrow I’m flying home. It’s nice to see the book, but tomorrow I’m really looking forward to seeing Oot again.

More soon,

pat

    Dear Pat,

This is your thumbs’ agent, why were all the other digits given a photo op and the star of the show given no exposure ? Rest assured you have not heard the end of this matter !

Also, have fun with Oot and don’t forget to buy something nice for your lady. Save some energy for the tour dude, you’re going to need it. Book looks incredible, can’t explain how badly Ineed to get my grubby little paws one my own….Amazon had better be on the ball on release day !!!!

the way those fingers are positioned, I think it would be impossible for that hand (a right hand) to be pat’s while he took the picture. Plus, it doesn’t resemble a bear claw in the least.

obviously, this photo is shopped. :|

Congratulation Pat. The Name of The Wind literally took my breath away when I randomly picked it off a shelf at Barnes and Nobles and I have been waiting for this one ever since. Hopefully now you can take some time off and enjoy Oot and Sarah before being hammered with requests for book three =).

Yeah. Amazon is wrong. It’s 900 something. I’ll post that up on Friday’s blog…

On it being longer than the Way of Kings…. here is what Brandon Sanderson had to say about that a few days ago…

It should be noted that this ARC of Wise Man’s Fear is 1100 pgs long, 100 more than The Way of Kings. THE GAUNTLET HAS BEEN THROWN DOWN.

Yes, which is why I asked. ARC are not always the same as final product.

    cool,
I have to confess, when I saw the blog title I became as exited as a child on christmas morning.
I thought you had posted up the first of many sample chapters. Now that I have calmed down a bit, I realise a reread of TNOWwould be warranted, before I read TWMF
Does anyone know if there will be sample chapters? Would they go through the publishers website?

There is one sample chapter, Pat’s entry in the Writers of the Future contest from before NotW came out. It’s really good and shows a side of Kvothe that is very differnt from what we know. Much darker.

Pat has never mentioned any sample chapters and with the release only a month away I doubt there will be any.

        Posted January 26, 2011 at 2:25 PM | Permalink

Yes, that is the Road to Levinshir. There was another sample posted online at one point several years ago, in which Kvothe meets Puppet. However, Patrick asked for it to be taken down because he had much extensive editing to do. I don’t know if you’d be able to find a version of that online anymore, but maybe. I fortunately saved it to my desktop when it was still available, but I would never share it without Pat’s permission. Both of those sample chapters are years out of date, though.

I’m impressed you can heft it with one hand, especially after signing so many copies! You said it was three pounds in paperback ARC format–how much does it weigh in hardcover?

I was just about to make a comment about you intentionally leaving your thumb out of this shot – but it looks like Mickey beat me to it….garn.

It fills me with the warm squigglies that you’ve got your hands on the first copy. I think it says many nice things that you more wish to be home with the baban. Whooo Pat! *Waves his imaginary [no, really, honest….{cough}] pom-poms.

I’ve never been so excited to go to a speaker/reading/etc in my life, and some cool people came to talk while I was at Georgetown. I promise to try not to geek out too badly when I get there, but I can almost surely promise to fail at that.

Congrats Pat. As everyone else is, I’m looking forward to reading The Wise Man’s Fear, as well as the rest of the story when it is ready.

Several blogs ago – around August? – you said you met Christopher Paolini and had a conversation, or a lunch. Words were traded, that’s the point. Several of your readers were really curious what your experience was with him, especially those of us who really despise his writing and lack of storytelling; it’s more a listing of events.

I know you’ve been busy, but I’m anxious to hear your debriefing and comments on the occasion and what-not.

    Thanks!

Aaaaaah, I wanna freak out every time I think of how long it is going to take until the WMF is released in portuguese here in Brazil. My brothers and dad would chop my head off if I bought it in English. But I think that’s exactly what I’m going to do. :D I’m going to the US in June, so I’ll buy it, put the cover of some other unpleasant book over it and read it under the blankets!

At first, my only comment was going to be, “%#@% yeah!”

I do actually have a question though, being an independent musician in years past, Pat, is there a way that we can buy WMF that maximizes either the money you see back to yourself and your family, or the benefit you get from the purchase? I plan on making it out to see you in Houston, TX if picking it up from a reading is the answer.

I have been strictly told that, as a student teacher, it is painfully unprofessional and unacceptable for me to take off of work for anything less than family death or extremely violent illness.

So I guess I’m going to teach on no sleep that day. Or give them a “work day.” Either way, it’s gonna be a pleasant day for all involved :)
