Columbus Ohio and A New Edition to the Family

Okay. First and foremost, I should mention a reading/signing that I have thrown together in true spur-of-the-moment Rothfuss fashion.

On May 31st, at 7:00, I’m going to be in Columbus Ohio.

Here are the salient details.

May 31, 2012 at 7:00 PM
Reading, Q&A, and Signing
Barnes and Noble The Ohio State University Book Store
1598 N. High Street
Columbus, OH 43201
Facebook Event

I haven’t had much time to spread the word about this one, so if you know someone in the area who’d be interested, I’d take it as a kindness if you tipped them off. I don’t know when I’ll be back in the area.

In other news, look what’s happening this week in China:

(Click to Embiggen)

The Name of the Wind is coming out there this week. I haven’t actually seen the physical copies of the book yet, but they did send me these pictures.

They broke it into two volumes because of the length, but as I understand it, they’re selling them together. So there won’t be a wait between volume one and volume two.

Aren’t the covers gorgeous? They make me feel much classier than usual.

Those covers are very cool. Would love to own a copy of them, even if I can’t read it.

Yes, those are very beautifully designed covers. I think the US could learn a thing or two from whoever did those.

Wow! No disrespect to the amazing artists that have produced your American covers, but I’m with Allara – it would be so cool to see art like this on US shelves.

Those are pretty great covers, but my heart will always belong to the french covers. We’ve got a print of The Name of the Wind french cover from amazon, it’s a real eye catcher for visitors. It’s between this or our Labyrinth door knockers that most people comment on:http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=the+name+of+the+wind#/d21m1y8

That was actually the first time I’ve deviant art searched The Name of the Wind in awhile…I really like this anime one.http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=the+name+of+the+wind#/d2nt05x

    …and this one. Too cute!http://browse.deviantart.com/?order=9&q=the+name+of+the+wind&offset=24#/d2o2t6a

    I got post happy…

    Absolutely lovely covers.

First off, those covers look awesome.

Secondly, any chance you’ll be throwing together a spur of the moment reading around your area sometime mid-June? I’m taking a Road Trip of Self Discovery (Working Title) around roughly a third of America, and will be passing nearby. It would be great to be able to stop by and see one of my favorite authors.

Love those book covers, seriously cool.

Next, I may have missed it this year, but I think you should throw a couple signed foreign language copies into the auction next year for the fundraiser. I know I’d bid on a Chinese language copy signed or unsigned.

Any chance of an Arabic version? That would be crazy cool to own as well.

    • Posted May 22, 2012 at 10:22 PM | Permalink

The problem is, most people would find a foreign edition useless, if not downright irritating.

That why we run the online store. (See the Tinker’s Packs icon up in the right hand corner of the blog there?)

People can buy foreign copies of the books there and all the money raised goes to Worldbuilders.

Didn’t realize I could do that, thanks Pat. I like to collect copies of my favorite books. I think it’d look great to display several different versions of the book in my home office. Now I’ll just have to wait for you to visit TN to get one signed.

Keep up the good work Pat, you’re truly making a difference.

A beautiful detail: Most given names in Chinese are made up of three words (most, not all): one for the family name, and two for the personal name. Here there are three words or characters for the title in Chinese, so the name of the book directly parallels a given name in Chinese. For some reason I am delighted by this.

Speaking of conferences… Sir Majesty Rothfuss, I see that you will be in the Great White North in November 2012 at the World Fantasy Convention. Are fans welcome there? I visited their website and it seems to be a place more for professionals (authors, editors, artists, assorted powerful minions) to hobnob than for fans to mob. I don’t know that you’ve ever been in Canada before and I’d really like to meet you, but I don’t want to crash the fancy party.

    • Posted May 24, 2012 at 3:07 PM | Permalink

It’s official attendees only at the convention. But I’ll probably try to set up a booksigning for the public when I’m in the area because I don’t get up there very often…. Keep tuned to the blog for details.

Thanks for letting me know about the convention. (I was actually considering cutting a few days out of school and paying to be an attending member, but I’d have stuck out like a sore thumb).

P.S. It’s moose season in November!

I don’t know about you, but I have already bought a membership and plan to attend.

I looked at the website for the 2011 World Fantasy Convention and the program page talks about readings and signing sessions, so I take that to mean that there will be a number of fans there.

I’m assuming that the 2012 will have similar programming announced eventually.

That’s fantastic! By “happening this week in China” do you mean it is coming out for sale in China this week? Or just that the cover is being finalized in China this week? I am in China right now and would love to pick up both volumes as soon as possible for a friend.

Any further details you could provide would be great.

Hi, this is the Chinese translator.
The book is coming out for sale next week, and there is already an online store for pre-order (dangdang.com). However, the real books might take some time to hit the shelfs. How long do you think you’d stay in China? If you’re leaving soon, I’m happy to mail an advanced copy to you. :D

Can I lie and say I’m leaving soon? I live in China. I have for about a year and I will for a few more. But it would be beyond awesome to tell my friend she is one of the only people in the world to own a Chinese copy of The Name of the Wind. I’d be happy to pay a little extra for an advanced copy.

          • 214314
            Posted May 24, 2012 at 10:59 PM | Permalink

The thing is, there is absolutely no difference between my copies and the ones that are going on market shortly after. The ‘advancement’ is only temporal, and quite short at that. I don’t think it’ll be long before the book is out there for anyone to buy, and the awesome feeling may as well evaporate before your friend even had time to boast about it…
So yeah, I think it’s quite meaningless to give you one if you’re not leaving soon :P

Hi, I checked the website, and the answer is yes. It takes 4-8 weeks and at least 50% of the price of the book (if you buy TNOW only, that’s 59+30=89 yuan in total, about AU$14).
If you wait for several weeks, other online stores should also have the book, and you can compare their fees. (e.g. http://www.amazon.cn, which is, you know, Amazon.)
Or you could wait until Pat’s tinker’s pack has them. :p

Memories of being forced to read my first Chinese book are flooding back to me, but reading another Chinese book doesn’t seem near as bad now that Kvothe will be accompanying me (once again). Plus I can finally get my friends who detest reading English to read it! (Are we getting a traditional Chinese version?)

The covers have a much warmer feeling to them, but still retain the dark mood of the tale. It’s just unbelievably pretty.

    • 214314
      Posted May 23, 2012 at 8:46 PM | Permalink

They already have a traditional Chinese version in Taiwan, but you can only buy it from Taiwan, and the translation is totally different, as well as the cover. :)

      • Posted May 24, 2012 at 3:04 PM | Permalink

I’m pretty sure we have a few Taiwanese editions in The Tinker’s Packs store, too.

  20. Posted May 23, 2012 at 11:20 AM | Permalink

Pat, I’ve always been curious, so might as well ask here.

Content-wise are foreign editions the same as the original English? Obviously there is the liberty brought on by translation but are there regional sensibilities that might force some changes in certain countries?

    • Posted May 24, 2012 at 3:02 PM | Permalink

Yes to both. The content is the same, but we do take regional sensibilities into consideration too in the translation.

But I’ve never allowed something to be changed in order to avoid offending people. Or given permission cut something out of the books, like a scene or a character or anything like that.

It’s funny but no matter how nice the covers are for the North American editions I always like the foreign covers better. I really, really like those chinese covers and even though I can’t read the language I’d like to have them.
