Okay. First and foremost, I should mention a reading/signing that I have thrown together in true spur-of-the-moment Rothfuss fashion.
On May 31st, at 7:00, I’m going to be in Columbus Ohio.
Here are the salient details.

Reading, Q&A, and Signing

I haven’t had much time to spread the word about this one, so if you know someone in the area who’d be interested, I’d take it as a kindness if you tipped them off. I don’t know when I’ll be back in the area.
In other news, look what’s happening this week in China:
The Name of the Wind is coming out there this week. I haven’t actually seen the physical copies of the book yet, but they did send me these pictures.
They broke it into two volumes because of the length, but as I understand it, they’re selling them together. So there won’t be a wait between volume one and volume two.
Aren’t the covers gorgeous? They make me feel much classier than usual.

Those covers are very cool. Would love to own a copy of them, even if I can’t read it.
Very pretty! Congratulations!
Yes, those are very beautifully designed covers. I think the US could learn a thing or two from whoever did those.
well that is poop, why does every other country in the world get cool cover art?
what is this? 4th comment on the famous patrick rothfuss’s blog?
Wow! No disrespect to the amazing artists that have produced your American covers, but I’m with Allara – it would be so cool to see art like this on US shelves.
Those are pretty great covers, but my heart will always belong to the french covers. We’ve got a print of The Name of the Wind french cover from amazon, it’s a real eye catcher for visitors. It’s between this or our Labyrinth door knockers that most people comment on:http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=the+name+of+the+wind#/d21m1y8
That was actually the first time I’ve deviant art searched The Name of the Wind in awhile…I really like this anime one.http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=the+name+of+the+wind#/d2nt05x
…and this one. Too cute!http://browse.deviantart.com/?order=9&q=the+name+of+the+wind&offset=24#/d2o2t6a
I got post happy…
Really wished you had said Cleveland.
Absolutely lovely covers.
First off, those covers look awesome.
Secondly, any chance you’ll be throwing together a spur of the moment reading around your area sometime mid-June? I’m taking a Road Trip of Self Discovery (Working Title) around roughly a third of America, and will be passing nearby. It would be great to be able to stop by and see one of my favorite authors.
Have you looked at the tour schedule?
Love those book covers, seriously cool.
Next, I may have missed it this year, but I think you should throw a couple signed foreign language copies into the auction next year for the fundraiser. I know I’d bid on a Chinese language copy signed or unsigned.
Any chance of an Arabic version? That would be crazy cool to own as well.
The problem is, most people would find a foreign edition useless, if not downright irritating.
That why we run the online store. (See the Tinker’s Packs icon up in the right hand corner of the blog there?)
People can buy foreign copies of the books there and all the money raised goes to Worldbuilders.
Didn’t realize I could do that, thanks Pat. I like to collect copies of my favorite books. I think it’d look great to display several different versions of the book in my home office. Now I’ll just have to wait for you to visit TN to get one signed.
Keep up the good work Pat, you’re truly making a difference.
Just FYI, you can also order signed copies of the books in”The Tinker’s Packs”.
I saw that shortly after making the last post. ;)
Thanks!
A noble clicking embiggens the smallest picture.
A beautiful detail: Most given names in Chinese are made up of three words (most, not all): one for the family name, and two for the personal name. Here there are three words or characters for the title in Chinese, so the name of the book directly parallels a given name in Chinese. For some reason I am delighted by this.
Speaking of conferences… Sir Majesty Rothfuss, I see that you will be in the Great White North in November 2012 at the World Fantasy Convention. Are fans welcome there? I visited their website and it seems to be a place more for professionals (authors, editors, artists, assorted powerful minions) to hobnob than for fans to mob. I don’t know that you’ve ever been in Canada before and I’d really like to meet you, but I don’t want to crash the fancy party.
It’s official attendees only at the convention. But I’ll probably try to set up a booksigning for the public when I’m in the area because I don’t get up there very often…. Keep tuned to the blog for details.
P.S. Cool fact about the name. I hadn’t known that….
Thanks for sharing.
^__^
Thanks for letting me know about the convention. (I was actually considering cutting a few days out of school and paying to be an attending member, but I’d have stuck out like a sore thumb).
P.S. It’s moose season in November!
I don’t know about you, but I have already bought a membership and plan to attend.
I looked at the website for the 2011 World Fantasy Convention and the program page talks about readings and signing sessions, so I take that to mean that there will be a number of fans there.
I’m assuming that the 2012 will have similar programming announced eventually.
I just decided to go for the attending membership. :) I’ll deal with red tape at school if and when it arises.
So far my favorite copy of the Name of the Wind is the 50th anniversary Gollancz edition. That was the easiest purchase decision ever.
https://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Gollancz.jpg
Now that is some majestic cover right thar.
haha, if they already split this part in 2, will wise man’s fear become a trilogy?
I’m guessing it will have to be….
The cover in the spanish edition is kind of generic. Those are very pretty.
About signing… Are you coming to Barcelona any time soon? :)
That’s fantastic! By “happening this week in China” do you mean it is coming out for sale in China this week? Or just that the cover is being finalized in China this week? I am in China right now and would love to pick up both volumes as soon as possible for a friend.
Any further details you could provide would be great.
Hi, this is the Chinese translator.
The book is coming out for sale next week, and there is already an online store for pre-order (dangdang.com). However, the real books might take some time to hit the shelfs. How long do you think you’d stay in China? If you’re leaving soon, I’m happy to mail an advanced copy to you. :D
*shelves*, my apologies… One second of wondering thoughts and the hand slips…
Can I lie and say I’m leaving soon? I live in China. I have for about a year and I will for a few more. But it would be beyond awesome to tell my friend she is one of the only people in the world to own a Chinese copy of The Name of the Wind. I’d be happy to pay a little extra for an advanced copy.
The thing is, there is absolutely no difference between my copies and the ones that are going on market shortly after. The ‘advancement’ is only temporal, and quite short at that. I don’t think it’ll be long before the book is out there for anyone to buy, and the awesome feeling may as well evaporate before your friend even had time to boast about it…
So yeah, I think it’s quite meaningless to give you one if you’re not leaving soon :P
Feel free to email me at Bradford Culwell gmail if you are willing to sell me an advanced copy.
Sorry. There should be a “dot” and an “at” in there that got eaten by comment demons. Bradford dot Culwell at… you get the idea.
Hi there –
Is there any way we can purchase the books off dangdang and have them posted to Australia?
Cheers
S
Hi, I checked the website, and the answer is yes. It takes 4-8 weeks and at least 50% of the price of the book (if you buy TNOW only, that’s 59+30=89 yuan in total, about AU$14).
If you wait for several weeks, other online stores should also have the book, and you can compare their fees. (e.g. http://www.amazon.cn, which is, you know, Amazon.)
Or you could wait until Pat’s tinker’s pack has them. :p
Is it purely coincidental that Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton will be in Columbus at the same time?
…What are they going to be in Columbus for? It’s a couple hours away for me, but if there’s going to be a a mini convention of awesome up there…
Felicia and Wil are going to be at origins that week. http://www.originsgames.com/
I’ll be there too. But I’m mostly ghosting the con.
That’s fantastic. I wasn’t going to be able to make the signing, so hopefully I can say hello on Saturday at Origins.
Congrats!
Those might just be the most beautiful covers yet.
Memories of being forced to read my first Chinese book are flooding back to me, but reading another Chinese book doesn’t seem near as bad now that Kvothe will be accompanying me (once again). Plus I can finally get my friends who detest reading English to read it! (Are we getting a traditional Chinese version?)
The covers have a much warmer feeling to them, but still retain the dark mood of the tale. It’s just unbelievably pretty.
They already have a traditional Chinese version in Taiwan, but you can only buy it from Taiwan, and the translation is totally different, as well as the cover. :)
I’m pretty sure we have a few Taiwanese editions in The Tinker’s Packs store, too.
Pat, I’ve always been curious, so might as well ask here.
Content-wise are foreign editions the same as the original English? Obviously there is the liberty brought on by translation but are there regional sensibilities that might force some changes in certain countries?
Yes to both. The content is the same, but we do take regional sensibilities into consideration too in the translation.
But I’ve never allowed something to be changed in order to avoid offending people. Or given permission cut something out of the books, like a scene or a character or anything like that.
Thanks for the reply! :)
It’s funny but no matter how nice the covers are for the North American editions I always like the foreign covers better. I really, really like those chinese covers and even though I can’t read the language I’d like to have them.
AHHHH!!! I’m in Columbus on June 1st!!!
seriously. can we have some awesome covers in english too? wise man’s fear was great too though.
and congratulations on making the world a better place by writing a nice book.
I’m still partial to the Finnish edition cover. And, of course, that crazy Italian one that has nothing to do with anything.
Heh. That was a fun blog…. I felt a little bad about it though when I met my Italian editors….
I bet this was the blog you felt bad about. But wasn’t it worth it just to name the dude on the cover “Gothy McHotbod”? Because, you know, reading it is still making me laugh out loud.
the Finnish is very beautiful
Nice wordplay in the title.
As so many nice folks before me have already stated, “Congratulations Pat!”
It must be pretty damn amazing for you to sit back and really think a bit on how many languages embrace your story. That is so cool and I don’t mind admitting that I’m a tad jealous.
We are all happy for you.
The 30th is my birthday and the 31st is the first day of my vacation. You’re doing this just for me, aren’t you?! See you there!
Congrats Pat! I kind of like how they split the book into two parts to make it smaller. Much more portable! I love your books but they are REALLY heavy in my purse. LOL
These covers are very nice, but I’m really partial to the american covers that feature real drawings by hand. Not that the realism these feature isnt extremely intriguing, interesting how the publishing worlds differ between cultures.
Those covers are AMAZING!!!
That is some extremely classy graphic design. So when NOTW is split in halves, where does the break come? Is it the same for every foreign version that gets bisected?
You should do an AMA on Reddit Pat :)
Already did.
Pat you have to be careful telling people where your going to be otherwise crazed fans might pull a Misery and kidnap you and force you write. P.S. Do you think Stephen King wanted to be kidnapped which is why he wrote that book?
Hrmm I want these!
When do you think they will be in the Tinker shop for purchase?
Hi Pat,
I’m from Brasil and this is the first time I write in your blog, even reading it from long time.
Those two covers are amazing. I love it.
May be some day Brasil will be in your schedule.
See ya
Damn those covers are sexy. Sheesh.
