Pre-Order of Unfettered

So, to cut right to the chase here, I’ve got a story coming out in an anthology next spring.

The anthology is called Unfettered. I’m in there with Terry Brooks, Brandon Sanderson, Tad Williams, Naomi Novik….

Well… a lot of cool people, basically. If you click to embiggen the cover, you can read the whole list of authors for yourself.

You can go pre-order copies over here.

My advice? If you want one of the limited-edition copies, signed by all the authors, you should probably hop over there sooner rather than later. They aren’t going to last long.

And to answer the question before anyone asks it in the comments below: Yes, my story is set in the Four Corners world.

It’s called, “How Old Holly Came To Be.”

If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you might actually remember me talking about how I wrote it in a single day about a year ago.

I’m excited about this anthology for a couple reasons.

First and most obviously, because there are a lot of really good writers in there. I’m actually really excited to read it.

Second, when you write kinda slowly, like I do. And you revise obsessively, like I do. And you write books that are really long, like I do. It means there are long gaps in between your published books. It’s been more than a year since I’ve had anything new to show y’all. So I’m glad this is coming out to help give y’all something new of mine to read….

Lastly, the proceeds from the book go to a good cause. You can read more about that over here if you want.

More news soon,

pat

Hi Pat, you misspelled excited in the sentence “I’m actually really exited to read it.”

I would just like to point out that your name is listed second, second to only Terry Brooks that is, but before Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson, Jacqueline Carey and Tad Williams.

Also, this has a good number of people that I know and like. Sounds amazing!

I’m pretty excited to read it too.

Excellent, purchased! Love when anthologies like these have at least a couple of my favorite writers – a pleasure to read and a great way to connect with writers I haven’t heard of yet. Look forward to seeing Four Corners flushed out even more.

Check out “Flesh Out vs. Flush Out” from The Oatmeal. Contains some language, but if you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you know Pat has no problem with that.

And I should also add, I was more than a bit curious about that short story since the blog you wrote in last December. It will be awesome to finally have the chance to read it.

Ordered mine a couple of weeks ago – that is an incredible line-up, and I can’t wait to tear into it.

Also, when you talk about it being for a good cause, I’m thrilled to see so many amazing writers jump in to Mr. Speakman’s aid. Of course, these are many of the same people who contribute to World Builders, so I don’t know why I’m surprised.

Hi Pat! I’d really like to read it. However I have a doubt. I’ve been using my kindle for way too long and considering that I’m in Argentina and our customs office sucks, ebooks are a solution for me. In the pre-order page, it’s mentioned an ebook edition, but it’s not really showing its price or if it’s even available for pre-order.

Could you give me any clues about it?

    Thanks in advance!

I would like to know that information as well. I searched and could not find the book on Amazon. Keep us informed about the ebook option.

According to Shawn Speakman, the publisher of this great anthology, the eBook will be out in Feburary or March 2013. Probably only for kindle and nook. His own book “The Dark Thorn” costs about 7 Dollars, so I’m guessing “Unfettered” will be also about this this price. Hope I could help you, because I will order it as eBook as well. I’m really, really want the book but shipping cost of 40 Dollars to Germany are just a little bit over the top for me right now. :(

    Posted October 8, 2012 at 11:57 AM | Permalink

I have a question and didn’t know how else to contact you. My name is Ryan McCann. I’m a huge fan. When I heard you were judging a writing contest for WPR I wrote something right away, despite never having written flash fiction before. Yesterday, I submitted at around 11:20 p.m. and received the confirmation email.

I save all my drafts to see how my writing progresses. I didn’t get much sleep and by mistake I sent you my draft. I know this goes against–well, everything; however, would you allow me to submit the edited final?

My draft wasn’t bad. I missed an apostrophe and I have a missing word in the first sentence of the third paragraph, outside of that I should be grammatically sound. The trouble is that I made a few stylistic changes as well. Content in the story remains largely the same between the draft and the final.

I understand either way, but I’m a big believer in the power of asking questions and figured it can’t hurt to ask. I’ll leave my email. Thanks,

    Ryan

Pat – seems like you found NaNoWriMo a pretty positive experience last year. Are you going to attempt it again this year? I’m looking forward to the “mythic, lyric story that will break your heart.” More that that, I was rooting for you just because it’s amazing to me to see a successful artist try something different, in public no less.

Dear Pat, yours are almost the only fantasy books I buy, I hope you’ll consider selling your story as ebook, alone, because it’s not great to buy a book for $35 when you just want to read 1 story in it. Otherwise, great that you have a new story out!

Oh, but you should at least try some of the other contributing authors. There are some really wonderful writers in that bunch. (What do you call a bunch of writers? A gaggle? A smoot? A plethora?) That is an amazing and impressive list of talented folks! Buy the book! Broaden your horizons!

Anthologies like this are a great way to discover new writers, and this one has an especially strong roster with a lot of genre greats and upcoming talent.

Also, this anthology was created with the purpose of raising funds to pay off its creator’s medical debts. So I doubt you’ll see any of the stories released separately until at least that goal is reached.

Whoa! Thanks for letting us know! I saw your FB post, the moment I heard of the limited edition I knew it’d go straight away, and managed to buy a couple of copies from my phone (To be honest, pretty damn impressed with my phone – ordering books from another continent, in a hallway between meetings!!) I honestly think I got the last copies because Shawn posted up saying they’d sold out within the half hour. Excited to read them “How Old Holly Came To Be.”!!

I had some problems getting onto the site at first. I wonder if mention on Pat’s site leads to an event sometimes referred to a slash-dotting.

I’m mightily confused to see that it has listed “eBook:Kindle | Nook,” but no option to pre-order the kindle version and no listing on Amazon.

Is it going to come out for kindle? Or, do I just need to order the old school paper and glue version?

    Thank you muchly!

According to Shawn Speakman, the publisher of this great anthology, the eBook will be out in Feburary or March 2013. So far no price or preorder yet, but he sells his own book for about 7 Dollars so my guess is the price will be about the same amount.

I don’t see anything on Brandon’s site about this one. Do you know anything? I don’t mean this as a knock to you Pat since this is your blog, but I have been reading the Wheel of Time since 1990 when I was 16 years old.

I did not realize Old Holly was set in Four Corners. If its the same story I heard at a reading its really good but very different from the Kingkiller writing style. Almost like an inverted version of the way Kingkiller has story in the front with poetry in the background. It sparked a lively discussion on the drive home about the use of language and poetry vs. prose.

    Hello Patrick

I am new to your books and after i finished The Name of The Wind i quickly went out and bought The Wise Mans Fear. While reading the book i found the Adem culture quite interesting and i have a few questions. Do the Adem have a system of marriage? If they do love someone will they only have sex with them or because they think so little of it, will they sleep with other people while being in love with the person? I dont if i missed the explanation in the book but how do the Adem people think babies are made or conceived? Are the Adem less prone to getting STDS or are they just really clean because from the amount of times they said they have sex i would think they would get one? They call people who are not Adem “barbaric” is this because the Adem think the are more advanceed in their ways or is that simply a name to them of nonAdem people?I found their way of learning very interesting as well, how did you come up with it? To me the Adem seemed like a people that is very rigid and not very openminded to other peoples beliefs, not that that is an all together bad thing considering that the nonAdem people are similar, but i found that the Adem are a little more rigid, do you believe i am correct in this? Sorry that i had so many questions you dont have to answer all of them if it is too long.

    Thanks Jacob

    Hey Pat,
I just ordered my copy of Unfettered but they were all sold out of the signed copies. Do you know of the possibilities of it being out by early March so I could possibly get you to sign it when you are in Tucson the 9th and 10th?
