Twitter Contest – The Voting

Okay folks, we’ve been running our game on twitter for almost two weeks.

It’s been fun, but now we’re just a day away from Halloween. That means it’s time to start voting on who you think the real Rothfuss is.

But first, some things to consider:

1. Voting starts now, but the contest isn’t over until Midnight on Oct 31st. (And just to be clear, we mean midnight in  American Samoa (UMT-12.) We picked that time zone so *everyone* gets all of Halloween to vote.)

But the contest will continue right up until midnight. Our players will continue to campaign for your trust and affection right up until the end.

2. You can vote even if you’re not on Twitter. I’m REALLY not trying to get people to sign up on there.  That’s why I set up the site where you can follow all the accounts even if you don’t follow twitter and don’t know much about it.

I’m serious about this. The only point of this contest was to have some fun and catch the attention of my readers who were already on Twitter. Every time I hear someone say they joined twitter just to participate, I die a little inside.

I am Jack's mute horror

3. You can vote here:

[polldaddy poll=”7507110″]

4. I’m well aware that there are ways to circumvent this sort of online poll. There ware ways you can vote multiple times and stuff the ballot box.

I’m sure that my readers are above that sort of small-minded douchery.

5. If you *are* on twitter, and you’d like to declare your allegiance to your Rothfuss, this is the best way to do it.

“I think that @PatTwitterHandle is #TheRealRothfuss.”

We’ll pick some random winners from the people that have backed the right horse in the contest.

6. I also welcome your rampant speculation as to who the other five fakers are. That’s been one of my favorite parts of the game so far….

Might I recommend something along the lines of:

“I think @PatTwitterHandle is actually @Davidbowie. #RothFaux

7. For folks that want a chance to win cool stuff, but who don’t want to gaze into the twitter abyss, there’s a contest going on right now on right now over at The Tinker’s Packs.

All the details are over here.

There. That’s seven things. I’ll leave it at that. Seven’s a good number.

Made my choice. Either I’m wrong or right, this will be the funniest thing I’ve done on Twitter.

I hope you liked the pen nib, Mr. Rothfuss!

I’m not looking forward to this ending. At the moment there’s 6 of my favourite authors posting all the time. When it’s over there will only be one posting a small amount of the time. I got used to Pat all up in my life! Even if 5 are fake, they were pretty believable :)

    Dear Pat,

When I first saw the contest announced, my first thought was, “Damn, now I have to join Twitter to follow this fun.” But the more I reached into my inner soul, the more I was determined to remain Twitterless. So at least in my case, even though I have missed out on the fun, I just can’t sell my soul to Twitter even for this. So, at least in my case you don’t have to die a little bit inside. I resisted. Maybe when the smoke clears, in a future blog you could post some of the more humorous/amazing/ tweets that came in to the various accounts.

    Sincerely,
Didn’t play the Beautiful Game, but sat in the stands and watched.

      Hey sandibd,

Do you know that you can read everything from the game even if you’re not on twitter? I’m not and I’ve gleefully followed the whole thing! The page Pat posted above (http://pattwittertracker.squarespace.com/) shows all tweets from all the accounts in one neat page, but you can also click on their names and go to their twitter pages, where everything is visible without logging in. You only need to join twitter if you want to have an account and reply.

I totally get it if you knew this and just don’t want to go near twitter! Still, I thought I’d let you know you can see it all without joining in case you didn’t know :)

Yeah, I glanced at the page with the feeds. I might peruse them over the weekend, but I find even doing that I am just so anti-Twitter I don’t have the patience for it. But maybe by not joining Twitter, I saved a small sliver of Pat’s soul. :)

I understood he joined twitter due to his job. It allows him to instantly update information and people receive it each time, which was not happening with facebook.

I think his soul is untarnished.

I may be the only person left without a facebook account. To each their own.

All I can say is that I immensely enjoyed the Beautiful Game – and will miss it now that it’s over.

Also – I think my Twitter followers are probably sick of me alternating between flailing about NaNoWriMo and trying to guess who The Real Rothfuss is. I do not care. :D

I wouldn’t assume that’s why people voted for that account. I can tell you it’s certainly not why I voted for it. I just thought the syntax was very right. If that account isn’t Pat, it’s someone who knows how to copy exactly what I was watching for from Pat’s style.

I agree. He thanked his assistant for shutting off notifications. He worked to fix the verification badge. He knew he would be in Brighton when the contest ended. He was concerned at the fake pat impressions and thought wondered if that was the way he appeared to others. He did post food which he had said he would not do on facebook. The hours of tweets appeared to fit in his schedule. He wrote about jumping in leaves and had a really hard time not breaking his own rule about mentioning Oot, and implied he would be glad when he could tweet about Oot. Those are my main reasons. Game on!

The turn of phrases really had me convinced, but… It seemed as if it was *too* convincing – trying *too* hard to make us think he was Pat. I mean, the picture of the mead-brewing? We all know that’s one of Pat’s hobbies, but surely he can’t be the only one. Surely somebody invested in the context might take advantage of that to turn the tides towards them. The picture was too blurry to tell by the hand whether it might be him or not… Also, all the tweets… I don’t think Pat would have had that much time to spend tweeting, inside-references or not. It was a beautiful game, and kudos to the best impersonator out there, but my vote is for @PatRothfuss, blue author-picture or no.

    Dear Pat,

when I read your latest entry I felt realy guilty, because, not having any malicious thoughts at all, apparently I cruelly murdered a small part of your soul. Yes, I’m one of those who left their doubts behind to have the chance to ask a man I stand in great awe of some trivial questions. You blogged before that your mailbox is overflowing, and so this platform seemed to me the most hopeful way to get a short, but satisfying answer (and I don’t have to think too much about the wording to address a master of words..).
I discovered the Twitter Universe, and I found out that it’s not my place – it was an interesting, just a little scary trip, and I’m not carrying off any harm. Please don’t judge yourself.
By the way, thank you for being a writer. That’s just awesome.

    Greetings from Germany!

      Posted October 31, 2013 at 3:26 PM | Permalink

Yeah but @PatRothfuss has done some things that make me think he’s a person pretending to be Rothfuss.

This is kind of inelegant writing (I feel like someone who revises like Pat does wouldn’t have used the word “crisp” twice in succession):
      https://twitter.com/PatRothfuss/status/392005482610565120

And then there’s this very unsubtle reference to Pat’s interests:
      https://twitter.com/PatRothfuss/status/390998081325776896

And I find it odd that he misspelled “masturbatory” (this one isn’t huge, but it doesn’t inspire confidence either):
      https://twitter.com/PatRothfuss/status/391005081015160832

I agree that @Pat_Rothfuss isn’t Pat either, despite that account’s success so far. He tweets too much, and while he hasn’t done anything wrong, he hasn’t done anything spectacularly right either. My money’s on @PatrickRothfuss. Not to mention that whatever handle he chose for the contest will end up being his permanent handle. That pretty much immediately rules out the fake, real, and not handles.

Ha! I hope I’m not wrong and @PatRothfuss is actually Pat… that would be kind of awkward if he saw this, what with me pointing out a bunch of inadequacies and all.

And why can’t you edit comments on here? I have just remembered, or read for the first time rather, that they picked the handle names out of a hat, and would like to very sneakily remedy my public display of ignorance.

  21. BDemon
    Posted October 31, 2013 at 3:10 PM | Permalink

O-key, time to write it down. I think #TheRealRothfuss is @Pat_Rothfuss. Why? There are two reasons. The first is because there is no way Pat would be so predictable, I mean, c’mon, it’s a game, a beautiful game, and the hoster would be playing with the most obvious photo, which is the same that the photo on facebook? We value Pat too much to think he is so simple. BUT, he know that. “Hide the most valuable treasure of the world in the most predictable place, and that place will be the last location being checked”.

The second reason it’s that I think the others are not Patrick. @FakePatRothfuss is just having some fun answering to people, and he is trying to be Pat by don’t trying it too hard! It’s an evil masterplan but i won’t fall for it. I think he is scalzi, but I may be wrong on that. @PatrickRothfuss went on twitter while he was in a hurry for having to travel, and reading previous blogs and answers we know that Twitter isnt the best thing in the world for Patrick. You are late and you are tweetting? No thanks. Also, I think he is Will Wheaton. But very well done, the efforts were nice. @RealPatRothfuss and @NotPatRothfuss are playing also the “silence” card, but I think its not Pat style (my heart whispers it to my soul among the sound of the tingling stars). For last, I have the best #RothFaux, who is @PatRothfuss. I honestly don’t know what to say to state he (or her maybe) isn’t our beloved Patrick, so I rolled a dice (1-6 she/he was Pat, 7-12 she/he wasn’t) and Tehlu scored a 7 for me (I think that seven means she is a woman, but im not sure, she/he may be a Chandrian).

I’m going to throw the word ‘potato’ to the air hopping I’m right with everything. But if not, I’m just going to say it was fun, and I really enjoyed it. Stay awesome!

(I hope you understand everything I wrote, as english is not my native language).

I actually had a dream about this last night – the culmination of such a contest. All the Pat’s were in a train station here in Sydney Australia, and they were so tired from the deception! The entire six of them were in various states of exhaustion with #TheRealPatRothfuss tuckered out on a bench, somehow sitting diagonally (on the vertical plane) with eyes closed and beard askew. You heard me. Askew.

It was a pretty amazing dream, since I got to actually meet Ol’ Pat Bro and 5 of his Doppelgängers. I wonder how they ended up in a train station in Sydney…

Interesting fact (tweet numbers are current, not at time of voting)

    Pat_Rothfuss – 525 tweets, 1623 votes
    Patrick Rothfuss – 192 tweets, 588 votes
    PatRothfuss – 117 tweets, 539 votes
    NotPatRothfuss – 93 tweets, 446 votes
    RealPatRothfuss – 98 tweets, 344 votes
    FakePatRothfuss – 55 tweets, 295 votes

OK, more tweets -> more votes. But, if you go by votes-per-tweet, FakePatRothfuss is the clear winner, and my candidate (PatrickRothfuss) comes in last….
