A Pair of Kickstarters, and Kickstarting Pairs

Hey there everybody,

I’ve got some cool news today. Something that I’m really seriously geeked about.

But before I share that with you, I have to take care of some business. And that means sharing a little bit of bad news.

  • The (kinda) Bad News:

Luckily, this news shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s already involved. If you backed the NOTW Kickstarter last year, and you’ve been reading your e-mail, you already know the Kickstarter isn’t shipping on time.

I’m sorry as hell about that. But I’m afraid there’s not much I can do on my end. At this point, all the production, logistics, and shipping is being handled by Albino Dragon. There were over 11,000 orders, and it’s taken longer than all of us would like.

Rest assured that the parts of the kickstarter I do have direct control over are being taken care of as quickly as possible. Those of you who were lucky enough to get into the tiers that included a the prototype jot should have already received it, as I personally mailed all of those out before Christmas.

The only part that’s still up to me is signing the bookplates.

bookplate crop

So. Many. Bookplates.

You know what the best part of signing 4500 bookplates is? Nothing.

Okay, that’s not really true. They actually turned out really nice, and I know they’re going to make y’all happy when you get them. But you honestly have no idea how numbing it is signing several thousand of them.

I got these toward the end of January, and I’ve been signing them ever since.

At first I had a vague fantasy of signing all of them in one long 18 hour marathon. Unfortunately, I discovered signing my name 300 times in a row without a break caused a blinding pain to shoot up my arm, making me want to die.

And here’s the thing, I use that arm for a lot of things. Important things.

So, rather than flirt with carpal tunnel and potentially destroy my ability to type, I’ve been doing them in small batches over the last couple weeks.

As of last week, I’d sent about 2300 of them back to Albino Dragon so they could start shipping packages as soon as the other items end up at the warehouse.

(Edit! Only 20 minutes or so after posting this blog, I had a few people on facebook tell me they *just* got shipping notifications from Albino Dragon. So it looks like packages are moving toward backers at this very moment. Huzzah!)

As bad news goes, it’s not that bad. Everything’s still moving forward. The cards are going to look great, the poker chips will be cool, and the bookplates are beautiful.

But it does make my good news today a little awkward….

  • The Awkward News:

Any of you who have spent some time on kickstarter know that a project shipping late isn’t that uncommon. Especially when the overall kickstarter ended up being about six times bigger than any of us expected.

Here’s the problem. Months and months ago, game designer James Ernest dropped me a line. He’d created a new card game, he explained, and asked if I’d have any interest in incorporating it into my world.

For those of you that don’t know, James is the owner and head game designer for Cheapass Games. I’ve been playing his games for over 15 years.

Though a monumental effort of will, I kept my cool. I told James I was flattered, but I needed to play the game first to make sure it was a good fit for my world.

He sent me the rules, and I played it with a few friends. It was brilliant. Easy to learn, but with some good strategy. You can bet on it. You can play for drinks (or Sounten.) In 30 minutes everyone was mocking each other, cursing our own bad luck, and talking shit.

It’s exactly the sort of game you’d see people playing in the Eolian.

I told James I thought it was a great fit. “My people will love it,” I said. “But I can’t feel good about launching this project until my other Kickstarter ships though.”

“How about February?” James asked.

“Perfect,” I said.

But things didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped. And by the time I knew the NOTW kickstarter was going to be shipping late, James had already brought other people onboard and scheduled his launch. There was no good way to move things around.

  • The Good News:

Despite my Midwestern guilt and the awkwardness of having these kickstarters overlap, I’m still really excited.

Not only is the game designed by James Ernest, but the art is going to be done by Shane Tyree. He did the NOTW deck with Albino dragon. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to working with him again:

Bandit

The previous kickstarter was a deck of cards *about* The Name of the Wind. But this is something different. This is a deck of cards *from* the Four Corners. It’s the deck of cards that Kvothe and Wil and Sim would sit down and play with at Ankers.

A few details:

  • This isn’t a standard deck of 52 cards. It’s a pyramid deck with 55.
  • It’s got ten tens, nine nines, eight eights, and so on.
  • The point of the game is to avoid pairs. To simplify this all the cards of each number have the same picture. (So there’s one Tinker, two Amyr, three nobles, etc etc, all the way down to 8 Bandits, 9 Beggars, and 10 Ruh.)

ruh

  • The one exception is the sevens. We hit one of our early stretch goals, so the sevens (Calamities) are each going to be unique. I’m sure the savvy among you can figure out why.
  • Folks were clamoring for an Adem mercenary in the deck, so we’re going to put that in. It’s probably going to replace the courtesan.

Honestly, there’s a lot more I could tell you about the decks, but I think I’ll save that for a later blog.

For now, I’ll just keep it to two things:

1. We’d like to do some other decks from my world, too. A Modegan deck. A University deck. A Faen deck….

James is hoping to bring in decks from other worlds, too. Like a Girl Genius deck done by Phil Foglio. I would love to see that.

But those need to happen as stretch goals. That way James can cover printing costs and afford to pay the artists.

That means the more people jump onto the kickstarter early, the more decks we’ll all have to choose from.

2. For those of you who like awesome things: Here’s the link.

Later Space Cowboys,

pat

P.S. Okay. One final thing. When I was talking with James last night, he mentioned that as a game designer, the thought of designing a game like Tak was really interesting to him.

What would you guys think about us making that a stretch goal in this kickstarter? Is that something you’d like to see?

I think I speak for the legions when I say that seeing rules for tak created would be worth kickstarting this. Let alone the actual game.

    • Posted February 21, 2014 at 10:20 AM | Permalink

I’ve got a lot of the basic concepts and mechanisms for Tak. Sitting down with James to work out the details and make it something playable…. I’d love that. It’s not something I can do on my own….

tbh, you should only make it part of this Kickstarter if Tak can be played with a pyramid deck or doesn’t need anything at all you won’t have anyway.

If you need your own set of game pieces to really play Tak… schedule another Kickstarter! If you don’t… schedule one anyway, people will love getting their own custom game kit to play Tak, I’d say.

That being said, fan gratification says you should probably bump a medium-late stretch goal to be sitting down with James – you won’t hinder the actual Kickstarter then, get motivation in for people to support James even more, and you’d feel pretty decent about doing some fan service while learning something for yourself.

What he said. To me, it sounded like Tak was played with pieces more like Go or perhaps Fanorona or Nine Men’s Morris (the latter two being real games that I didn’t know existed until playing AC IV); if that’s the case – it uses tokens/markers/pieces rather than cards, I’d say let it be its own Kickstarter. (And if it can be done through Cheapass Games, then by all means, hell yes work with them.)

As a lover of games of chance, Pairs sounds like it’s going to be fantastic fun…and if more NOTW-themed decks make it in, I might have to join the ranks of “ludicrous speed!” numbers of deck-havers. (I’ve already planned to have an extra deck or two I can give to friends.)

Tak, though, sounds like a game of strategy, and not so much one of chance; I love Chess as well – my grandfather taught me how to play, and it will always make me think of him – and when reading about Tak, I keep trying to figure out whether it has pieces or markers/tokens; it sounds like it has tokens more akin to Go or Reversi – both of which are easy to set up, but hard to master.

I’d love to see Tak come into existence, but it probably deserves its own thing. As The Mighty Rothfuss, only you can say for sure.

          • Posted February 21, 2014 at 2:53 PM | Permalink

Oh yeah. You’re absolutely right. I didn’t mean to imply that Tak was going to be card game.

It’s pieces on a board, and largely tactical, as opposed to having a strong random element.

So, it turns out that when I get a reply from you, Pat, some part of my brain does the old king’s “She kissed me!” from the Princess Bride, but without the “she” or “kissed”. And then I remember “play it cool, dude, you can handle this”…which mostly works. Except when I go ahead and directly talk about my inner fanboy.
            Anyway…
Is Tak a game with markers/stones a la Checkers/Go, or does it have designated pieces akin to Chess? Reading through the way it was played, it sounded like a game which used stones – it also seemed more like an economic strategy game than war strategy, but I’m really not sure exactly why I think that or how to represent it in a real thing. Perhaps it combines elements of both Go and Reversi? Some conditions capture while others convert? (Again, not real sure how to implement that.)

Whatever it ends up being, I’m sure fun will be had in the playing thereof.

This is exciting! I think it should its own Kickstarter though, as it will probably be too involved to be a stretch goal, and has nothing really to do with Pairs in concept…

It’s funny, from the description in the book I just assumed it WAS Go, just Four Corners-ified.
I’m very interested to see how it is different.

        • Posted February 21, 2014 at 2:55 PM | Permalink

Yeah. I think if we set it as a stretch goal, that will mostly entail James and I working out the details of the game. By which I mean the rough rules of the game.

Then, if it turns into something we want to pursue, we’ll do that as a whole separate project with ample playtesting and fidgeting before we release it into the wild…

          • SporkTastic
            Posted February 21, 2014 at 5:34 PM | Permalink

Now *that* sounds keen. If “rough rule draft” was made into a stretch goal, I’d go out on a limb and say that the throngs of fans (is that what we are? A throng? …I …think we need a new word) would come out in force to make that happen.

If “playtester kit” was made into an addon, I’d feel pretty safe in guessing that…the demand might be startling. …that wouldn’t have to take much, necessarily…some basic rules, ideas of things to use for markers/pieces, and a way to send feedback/get errata.

Oh, wait. There’s a Hangout going on. Turns out James knows how to do playtesting. That’s just crazy talk. But, if there was a way to join the group of “alpha players”…throngs. Large masses of fans, showing interest.

I would most certainly love to see Tak being a stretch goal. These are beautiful, I can’t wait.

Also, I can somewhat understand your pain at having to sign 4500 bookplates. One of my first jobs way back when included signing the president of the university’s name on letters to every alumnus from the last 10 years. Good luck.

So I totally geeked over the idea of playing Tak. I played a game called King’s Corners years ago, and always just mentally played that in my head when they were playing Corners. But Tak, no idea. So now I’m going to totally geek and say “Tak! Tak! Tak! Tak! What do we want? Tak! When do we want it? As soon as you can manage to nail down someone to make it as awesome as NOTW deserves and get some artists on board and keep us all posted of it’s incarnation!”

( First of all : sorry for my English, it’s not my mother tongue… hahaha :9)

The card games that I’ve played can be summarized in : UNO (boy , I am very very good at this game hahaha) , canasta (a Brazillian card game , I’ve been told that is very similar to the so-called ” euchre ” but I can not say for sure) and Pokemon (It can be considered a real card game??? I’ve played this game when I was about 10 years old lol ) .

But when i saw the video of how to play this new card game i could TOTALLY imagine me playing and drinking with my friends ! It looks like so much fun ! (And such as UNO and war, it will end up with many friendships hahaha jk jk :p)

Anyway , I went and did my ” donation ” . A strange feeling, considering that never helped a kickstarter (my boyfriend loves this stuff , but a game or something never caught my attention enough to actually help…) .

Thanks Pat for the sharing and also allowing us (addicted fans) to have the opportunity to expand our imaginations beyond the books , and allow us to engage further with the four corners universe :) (MOAR KKC GOODIES *-*)

As for the game of Tak : YES YES YES ! Please ! <3 <3
I admit that I can not see how the game would work exactly (like chess?). However, the way the books explore it seems like a very challenging game. Can not wait :)

I’m for all of it. I’d love for there to be Tak rules; even if it doesn’t come out with its own kickstarter (which I’d probably back too) having the rules out there would open things up; imagine the Etsy stores with all the variations on boards and pieces, not sure how IP rights would apply there though (super downer line of thought so let’s bring it back around)
Very excited about all the things being developed around the books, card and coins alike. I love the idea of owning a little artifact that could also exist in the worlds we read about. I didn’t know that anyone made fictional currency until I read about it here on your blog. I like how these sorts of things can combine interests, like coins or board gaming or obsessive-compulsive collecting and hoarding. (psst, that one’s me. In a perfect world, I would be like Smaug, but with games and books and stuff. In addition to the gems and gold, obviously.)

I am super excited about the rumors of Tak becoming a legitimate game. I love games of strategy and was always curious what this game would be like. I would also love to know if Corners was based off of an existing game I could play with any deck of cards or if it requires a unique deck. Corners would be a great addition to the Kickstarter. Either as a set of published rules for a classic deck or rules and a unique deck. Heck, with the popularity of the Albino Dragon and Cheapass Games kickstarters Tak and Corners could have their own kickstart campaign.

I am going to be the guy everyone hates now.

I would personally really make sure I am onto one process as big as those kickstarters are. Forecasting has proven not enough as deadlines are missed constantly.

This generates false expectations and overlapping projects which can kinda confuse people. This is stuff I do eight hours a day on my daily job. Planification, agendas, deadlines, logistics, etc… don’t get me wrong, I love it and it’s exciting, but I still think this sort of projects must be managed better.

I know 95% of it is out of Pat’s control since it involves lots of people and situations, but at the end of the day it’s your stuff (NOTW)
You are backing the projects and I guess you want to be clear, transparent and meet deadlines when it comes to your babe.

Now, suggestions, stop beeing an asshole Albender.-

    1) New tab on your website called “The Projects” Inform here current status of your projects. Both kickstarters and anything extra (videogame project) if you feel you want to. Ask assistants to get in touch with key people at the other side of the project, update when necessary. Keep everything clean and smooth.

Pros: Everyone know from YOU where we are on “x” project.
Cons: Extra job updating the information.

    2) Connect your fanbase. You are now active on different sites like goodreads, facebook or twitter. Sometimes you post on one social, you don’t on the other.
Information comes from different places. Tough to follow although blog posts try to recap. Thanks for that.
How about “showing” what’s new on your twitter, facebook or goodreads here as well on your site. Real time info, all on your site. One site to rule them all.

    3) Forums: How about your own forums? Your fanbase under control on the same place.
Not sure myself about if this would be a good idea or not tho.

    And by the way…

    4) Expanding Worldbuilders. I am from Barcelona. We got a good culture here for fantasy and sci-fi. I am sure you noticed when you came last year. Why don’t we make this ever bigger? Why don’t you get someone you trust here and involve them on the project?
We can ask people, libraries, authors, etc for book donations in Spanish. All of them to lottery. Every 10 euros donation a chance to get a geek spanish book. We rent a small warehouse, keep the stuff there until lottery.

This has gotten too long, email me if you want me to expand anything. :-)

I think you can see my email if I post here right?

    Best,

One can never have too many NOTW card decks! The wait for the first kickstarter was well worth it, so sign me up.

As a sidenote, carpal tunnel is a harsh mistress – thanks to my job I’m past the flirting stage and have entered into a committed relationship with it. At the risk of sounding like a marketer, I have a good recommendation for a wrist brace that I use daily and has muffled the maddening ache. Despite the rather…feminine packaging it’s fit for wrists of all persuasions and doesn’t get in the way of typing. Cheers!

When I saw that picture of the book plates it conjured up the check writing scene from “The Jerk.” My sympathies sir.

Few! I thought you didn’t know Miyazaki. To know that you’re dissapointed because my favourite film isn’t in your city… it relieves me. And that you like Avatar (seriously, don’t see Korra).

I got my playing cards in the mail this week (an awesome surprise gift from my wife) and love them. I love your books, more than I can properly express. Thanks so much!

Still awaiting tracking info for mine, but I had some add-ons including the book plate and the Dragon Whisperer board game so it could be a while. And, as an aside, thanks for the info on Pairs. Really hoping we make it to the Modegen deck…wouldnt mind seeing what that will look like.

I just received my cards in the mail today. I just have one question perhaps someone can answer. Who is the Queen of Hearts? Every other character I think I have figured out unless it’s a character we have not met yet. I remember the kickstarter updates revealing the concept art, but after the 50th update I lost track.

Overall, I love the deck. I would have waited beyond book 3 waiting they are that good. You can go on Albino’s site and pre-order more decks if you want. I just wanted to say thank you Pat for letting the artists create such awesome cards.

What deck will be in the Tinkers Packs? There’s three.

The Queen of Hearts is Fela…I had this same question, then I noticed that under the second “Add-Ons” graphic on the original Kickstarter page for the NotW cards, it lists each picture card and the corresponding character! Made my day!

    Awesome!

On another note (sorry for being off-topic, but an email wouldn’t get through to you in time), are you going to write an advance review of Sanderson’s Words of Radiance? I know you did it for The Way of Kings, and he did it for The Wise Man’s Fear, and, most importantly, I’m really curious as to what you think.
