“What Ho!”- A Belated Conclusion to an Adventure.

So I was at C2E2 last weekend, walking around the main hall with a friend, nodding and occationally fist-bumping readers who recognised me. (Too much hand-shaking leads to contagion at a convention.)

Eventually my friend asked, “What’s this Acquisiations Incorporated video people keep talking about?”

“I did a D&D thing with the guys from Penny Arcade and PVP last year,” I said. “We played a game at PAX Prime on stage. They taped it and put it online.”

“Why didn’t you put it up on your blog?” she said.

“I did,” I said.

“I’m pretty sure you didn’t,” she said.

I started to insist that I had, because I *remembered* doing it. I had a blast playing with them, and I even got Nate to do up some art for that blog post:

whatHo

But then I closed my mouth because over the last two years I’ve come to realize that I *intend* to write about a lot of stuff on the blog. But in reality, I don’t actually get around to finishing about 80% of the blogs I mean to.

Right now, for example, I have over 200 blogs that are in their “Draft” form here on WordPress. I am the king of broken promises.

When I got home, I looked online and saw I *had* posted a blog announcing my attendance at PAX, then another blog with more details about Acquisitions Inc….

But no blog with a follow-up link to the video itself.

So, for those of you who are reluctant to go clicking around all higgledy piggledy, here’s the 8-part audio podcast that leads up to the on-stage event.

Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8

In my opinion, a lot of these are even better than what happens later in the video. The video is about 2 hours, but the podcasts all together are 4-5 hours of solid geeky fun. I’ve been role playing for more than 25 years at this point, and Mike, Jerry, and Scott are the best sort of folks to tabletop with. So funny and quick on their feet. And Chris Perkins as DM is absolutely brilliant….

For those of you who aren’t into the whole podcast thing, here’s a vastly abridged, somewhat bowdlerized animated version of the podcast.

And here’s the video of the PAX game itself.

[Warning: I sing.]

If you want to see *all* the delightful, shiny geekery, you can head over to the D&D website. Acquisitions Inc has been going strong for several seasons, and it’s all archived over there. So there’s plenty to keep you busy until May 15th when the next episode of Nightvale comes out….

I’ve been thinking about getting into D&D but I don’t know anyone who would want to play with me. On a side note I really really want to buy one of Kvothes cloaks on the tinkerspacks. Please.

I recommend both checking out meetup.com for either “RPG” or “LARP,” and visiting your local game or comic/game shop to see if they host any games. It’s inspiringly common today.

No joke: I was learning to play D&D back when I first started listening to this and it actually helped me get acquainted with the mechanics of the game and the principle of letting the players tell the story. Still haven’t actually played a game but I’ve listened to the podcast and watched the video on you tube several times, enjoying it as much as any television show!

I recommend it to anyone who wants to listen to some solid geek gold!

I truly love that you’re able to blog about this without even mentioning that it was D&D Next that you were playing. It’s all about the love of gaming and friends, and it really comes through in the video (every minute of which I’ve watched, and is fantastic).

I’m in quite a few D&D groups on facebook, and the edition wars are raging more bitterly than ever. I think it must certainly be so venomous that it’s a barrier to newcomers getting into the hobby. And that really is a tragedy.

Some people just like to fight about shit.

I’ve been playing since red box and AD&D. Sure I like some editions and rules more than other, but ultimately it should be about play.

Play what you like. Be happy.

Also, do you know if the PAX guys would be open to including a woman or two in the next game? Seems about time.

It would be a heck of a shame to “lose” Christopher as the DM, but it’s occured to me that having Elizabeth Reesman run a game based on the Drow could be really interesting.

Morgan Webb was the intern player at PAX East this year so wish granted I guess?

After watching your adventure at PAX, I have developed a habit of avoiding standing directly beneath chandeliers.

Cool, looking forward to watching this when I get off work!

Also, good idea with the fist bumping I’ll have to pass that along. My boyfriend is always freaked out to shake peoples hands but it’s hard to think of a respectful way to get out of it once it’s introduced. LOL.

This was my favorite outing for Acquisitions Inc., really missed you in the latest “season”.

    My literal response:
“What, Viari isn’t in this one? What the fuck, Pat was fucking awesome!”

I had a schedule conflict for PAX east and couldn’t make it. So they brought in someone else, I think it was Morgan Web.

I would have loved to be there, but it’s also good to know they were bringing a woman to the table..

Ms. Web was a little stiff at first, but started to settle in to it as the game went on. Unfortunately, the game went long again so we didn’t really get to see her in full flow.

        Also, no costumes.

One thing I’ll never understand is how the game always goes over time at their own convention. I mean, it ALWAYS happens. I don’t know how Chris fits as much as he does in, my sessions are short if they only last 4 hours. I suppose he does derail much less than I do…

Man, I wish I could edit that “in” out…

        • Posted May 6, 2014 at 8:37 AM | Permalink

Yeah. The problem is that it’s a two-hour session. It’s a ridiculously short time for an adventure, but since they’re doing it live on stage, I don’t think they could make it much longer….

Did you hear about Wil Wheaton’s new Table Top RPG spin-off? Really excited for it. The segments will be relatively short, but they’ll still have the whole campaign and I’m hoping they release the uncut episodes.

Slightly related: we had Pat on two live panels at JordanCon back in early April. Both shows are available on our website twotcast.com or you can find our podcasts on iTunes under tWotcast. He was on episodes 132 and 133 and they are fantastic!

Thank you so much for the hug just before the Geek Geek Revolution panel. It was the highlight of C2E2 for me!

I misread the title of this blog as:

“What A Ho!”- A Belated Conclusion to an Adventure.

Funny how a single letter can change the entire meaning of a sentence.

“I’ve also been reading a lot of comic books lately. It’s easier for me to marvel at their craft, because I’ve only done a very little writing of graphic novels….”

    Deliberate pun of brilliance?

I don’t know if this applies to you, but it’s an interesting TED Talk about how when people talk about their goals they are less likely to achieve them, as they get the same chemical feedback in the brain as if they already had been successful.

I think maybe very creative people don’t even need to talk about something to trigger the same reaction.. that they visualize the final product so strongly that their motivation centers react as if they have actually reached the goal already.

Pat, you became my favorite author after the end of The Name of the Wind. I started to feel a bit like a fanboy (not in the annoying meaning of the term) after I finished the Wiseman’s Fear. Now that I have seen and confirmed you as a fellow rpg player I cannot but feel super excited for some reason.
The hours I spend with friends visiting fantastic epic worlds are truly special to me, as it is to them. So having these things in common with you is kind of exciting indeed. After reading your comments above I cannot help but feel pride, for my favorite author thinks a lot like I do (or I should say I think like you).

I know it’s a bit silly but…thank you for sharing this, you just made my day! Perhaps one day I shall have the honor of rolling some dice with you (no metaphors here). Even if it is on a signing session, I’ll bring some dice and we’ll roll’em together real quick.

Oh, BTW, I introduced your book to one of my RPG friends…he’s hooked!
