I’m curious….

So… if we were to make some Name of The Wind themed Valentine’s day cards and put them in The Tinker’s Packs, is that something y’all would be interested in?

And if so, what would you like to see on those cards? Quotes? Pictures?

And which quotes? Which pictures?

Curiously yours,

pat

YES! I would love an Auri themed Valentines day card. Maybe one of Kvothe playing for her. It may not be love like Kvothe has for Denna but i find it is very pure and true. Or just one of her in her underthing, because nothing is more important than feeling safe and like you belong.I’m not sure about what to use for a quote, you have written to many to chose from.
I may just want them to buy for myself but…………

A quote that could be used here: “You have a stone in your heart, and some days it’s so heavy there is nothing to be done. But you don’t have to be alone for it. You should have come to me. I understand.”

My wife is a huge fan of yours, so I’d love to be able to buy her one of your cards for Valentine’s Day.

Also, I think she reads this blog, but I don’t know if she reads the comments or not. I suppose we’ll find out.

Of course we’d be interested! What a silly question!
And I’d like to see quotes. Quotes! Quotes! I’ve gathered a few to help you get started:
“I guess I’m destined to be loveless”
‘If you are reading this I am probably dead.’
“Damn chicken. Come eat your dinner. I’m cold.”
“She’s obviously stupid for you. And you’re just plain stupid, so it’s a great match.”
“One wife, you’re happy, two and you’re tired, three and they’ll hate each other, four and they’ll hate you.”
“Isn’t that the way of the world? We want the sweet things, but we need the unpleasant ones.”

P.S. You probably shouldn’t listen to me.
P.P.S. No, really. You shouldn’t. These are terrible ideas. But I did amuse myself. Must count for something….

“One wife, you’re happy. Two wives, you’re tired, three and they’ll hate each other, four and they’ll hate you.” has some serious potential.

on the inside it could say “please don’t hate me”

I would love such cards, but I suspect shipping outside the US would be either really expensive or take several weeks. Currently the cheapest shipping option to Germany seems to be about 15-20 $ for a simple shirt or print, which makes buying a set of cards for 10 $ or less pretty unattractive (the same is true for most other goods by the way).

I know you can also send stuff with “snail mail”, but that tends to take several weeks, so Valentines Day might already be over, before it arrives. I would absolutely risk it however.

  9. Posted January 19, 2015 at 2:56 AM | Permalink

I’m not so much into Valentine’s Day (where I live has it’s own regional tradition and also celebrates the one of “the rose and the book”, which I believe you have heard of), but if there’s some nice artwork of Auri (and providing that there would be International Shipping) I wouldn’t mind to get myself one.

In any case, I believe that this is a great idea and (if sucessful, which is more than likely) could be expanded to more festivities.

I think this is a marvelous idea. I bought Talent Pipes necklaces for my wife and me on Valentine’s day a few years back because I don’t like wearing a wedding ring on my finger (I just don’t like things hanging on my hands — I don’t wear a watch either). We look at them as our alternative to rings and value them very highly. It was also to invoke the compelling relationship between Kvothe and Denna, with its inspiring sincerity. Most importantly, however, it reminds us of our romantic affections and our efforts in life to perfect our relationship and make our lives like a fine musical performance, outside and in, separately and together — to actually win the privilege of wearing the “Pipes,” if you will. I’ve read your books four times through, now, and I still find that relationship deeply intriguing. You have some marvelous comments from Kvothe and Denna on the values of romantic ties that would no doubt make for great cards. There’s also the relationship between Kvothe’s parents, which was a vital and nuanced thing. Surely there are many things that they said to each other that might find a place in a fun or inspiring card? Perhaps something from the Lay of Sir Savien Traliard and Aloine (especially from the scene between Denna and Kvothe at the Aeolian)?

Copyright issues aside, I’d put the classic bare-chested lute-carrying Kvothe on the front, with text along the lines of “A song for you on valentines day:”

    Then on the inside have:

“Your skills in love they do suffice, in close embrace I find you nice!”

Obviously I don’t really do valentines day cards… but THAT I would buy.

I was just reviewing the story of Felurian and Kvothe. These seem like fine quotes for Valentine’s day cards. If there’s time to create images to go with them, they could be wonderful. Then again, they’d probably have to be abstract or impressionistic since you probably prefer to have Felurian remain a creation of the imagination of the reader rather than explicitly suggested by someone else’s image of her. For example, to me, her skin is blue.

“Our rhythm is like a silent song.”

“Your kisses are like sunlight on my lips.”

My favourite quote which may work for a Valentines card is

“We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That’s as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.”

After asking our followers, they’re all certainly looking forward to see some Name of The Wind Valentine’s day cards. Everyone liked the idea.

They also suggest, like some people in the previous comments, that each card could have only seven words on it. Another card could be: “Which are your seven words?”, or something related with that.

Anyway, we all would love to see them :)

How about cards of couples with one person on each side? You know, Sim and Fela, Arliden and Laurian… Ambrose and Heme.

For Sim and Fela, I always loved this quote but it’s a bit long:
“It was worth blood and the fear of death to see her fall in love with him. Just a little. Just the first faint breath of love, so light she probably didn’t notice it herself. It wasn’t dramatic, like some bolt of lightning with a crack of thunder following. It was more like when flint strikes steel and the spark fades almost too fast for you to see. But still, you know it’s there, down where you can’t see, kindling.”

Arliden and Laurian, “It’s worth my life to make my wife not tally a lot less”

Ambrose and Heme, “I dropped a poem in the hallway outside Ambrose’s rooms. It was an acrostic that spoke of his powerful affection for Master Hemme.”

Here are some characters I would love to see in the cards, even though they don’t relate to the Valentine’s theme:

Brenden playing Tak, “Oh yes, I think I’m going to have quite a bit of fun playing with you”

Threpe at the pier with squinty eyed sailor rushing in the background, “And remember, small thaws make great floods, so be twice wary of a slowly changing season”

Scarpi in the inn with his clay wine cup upside down next to him, “I only know one story. But oftentimes, small pieces seem to be stories in themselves.” Perhaps put Sceop on the other side of the card, with the Edema Ruh campfire in the background.

If you can make something of this quote it would be amazing. One of my favourites!

“You meet a girl: shy, unassuming. If you tell her she’s beautiful, she’ll think you’re sweet, but she won’t believe you. She knows that beauty lies in your beholding.” Bast gave a grudging shrug. “And sometimes that’s enough.”
His eyes brightened. “But there’s a better way. You show her she is beautiful. You make mirrors of your eyes, prayers of your hands against her body. It is hard, very hard, but when she truly believes you…” Bast gestured excitedly. “Suddenly the story she tells herself in her own head changes. She transforms. She isn’t seen as beautiful. She is beautiful, seen.”

The last 9 words there are brilliant. Although they kind of need the lead-in, so would be tough to make work!

      Inside of card:
Suddenly the story she tells herself in her own head changes. She transforms. She isn’t seen as beautiful. She is beautiful, seen.”

A trifold card could also be used to split the front of the card at “but there’s a better way. . .

The fact that sometimes you don’t find the right place the first time, connects to me. And the fact that people don’t come into a relationship whole – but “broken” hits so close to home.

So many different wordings can be used inside. I actually quoted your afterward when I gave my wife the gear necklace – a gift that she said was her favorite in our 25 years of knowing each other.

But Master Wordsmith Rothfuss I leave the words and quotes to you. ;)

Yes! Please make them snarky. And the kind I can send to friends, not just someone I love-love. It is my book club gals who would get the most enjoyment out of receiving such a thing!!!! Can’t wait!

“Using words to talk of words is like using a pencil to draw a picture of itself, on itself. Impossible. Confusing. Frustrating … but there are other ways to understanding.”

This could be a “naughty” card. I would buy it. Especially if you opened it and it played “bow chicka wow-wow” (just joking.. but you get the idea).

Would love cards for a variety of occasions, or no occasion at all! And I heartily agree with bringbrong, there are many “unromantic” loves out there. Would love those options as well.

“I’ve told stories in the past, painted pictures with words, told hard lies and harder truths. Once, I sang colors to a blind man. Seven hours I played, but at the end he said he saw them, green and red and gold. That, I think, was easier than this. Trying to make you understand her with nothing more than words. You have never seen her, never heard her voice. You cannot know.”
“I will buy you dinner and spend hours waxing rhapsodic over the vast landscape of wonder that is you. For the rest of the day, the world cannot touch us.”
“No one wins a dance. The point of dancing is the motion a body makes. A well-played game reveals the moving of a mind. There is a beauty to these things for those with eyes to see it.”
“Though I am doused in you, I burn. The motion of your head is like a song. Is like a spark. Is like a breath that billows me and fans to flame a fire that cannot help but spread and roar your name.”
“If we were living in a better age they’d build a temple around a woman like that.”
“Each woman is like an instrument, waiting to be learned, loved, and finely played, to have at last her own true music made.”
or a slightly changed quote like “Cards are a poor substitute for female companionship, but they are easier to find.”
“To say you are lovely is such an understatement that I cannot begin to repair it.”
And I love the quote Arydis mentioned above:
“You meet a girl: shy, unassuming. If you tell her she’s beautiful, she’ll think you’re sweet, but she won’t believe you. But there’s a better way. You show her she is beautiful. It is hard, very hard, but when she truly believes you…
    Inside of card:
Suddenly the story she tells herself in her own head changes. She transforms. She isn’t seen as beautiful. She is beautiful, seen.”
    And from Payne5890:
“If you can find someone like that, someone who you can hold and close your eyes to the world with, then you’re lucky. Even if it only lasts for a minute or a day.”

The quote I would like to see is the first time Denna smiles at Kvothe in the Eolian when he talks about walking out onto the ice. That quote was read at my wedding, so I would definitely buy that card if it were made.

    Absolutely, please! Quotes, quotes….
Certainly a collection of the seven words hidden throughout the books.
Perhaps “Your face is like a kitchen.”
There was a quote from the scene where Kvothe is crying and Auri is comforting him, but I can’t remember for the life of me what it is. If anyone could help me out with that that would be great!
There are so many good quotes in the books, if I had to list all of the ones I think could go on a Valentine’s card I’d be typing for quite a while…I’ll have to rely on my fellow readers to share their fantastic ideas, I guess.

“You have the sweetest face… It’s like the perfect kitchen… Everything matches and the sugar bowl is right where it should be.”

Just want to say that Master Kilvan is my favorite. Mature, brawny and academic, with a passion for creating an eternal lamp. I like to pretend I’m a peasant woman in a remote mountain village in that world who has always had the secret to the eternal lamp, and that sometime in the next book, Kilvan finds me. ;)
Not necessarily a Valentine, but I”d buy a card, or art, or a small book (hint) about Kilvan.

I would love it most if you could sell them in a pack…maybe some like the Valentine’s cards we gave when we were in school, when we had to make sure that the whole class felt loved, and then some that are more stand-up-able, adult cards.

  56. Posted January 20, 2015 at 12:21 PM | Permalink

Yes please. And don’t forget to make some flirtatious ones from Bast. <3 I love Bast. (Not as much as Kvothe, of course, but still. Handsome Faen devil.)

Oh, and what about Arliden and Laurien?

Or something like what Kvothe wrote for the Maer Alvaron to Meluin Lackless? Those would certainly be extravagant and poetic!

And why would these cards just be for Valentines day? I think they would be lovely for all occasions and all days.

No quotes, but here’s some terrible pick up lines:

You may not be my lute, but I’d still like my hands to make sweet music, when they touch you.

If I would jump off a roof to get into a class, then just imagine what I’d do to get into you.

Are you related to Felurian? Because your beauty must drive people crazy.

Are you related to kvothe? Because I can’t pronounce your name, but that won’t stop me from screaming it to the rooftops.

I would love a Valentine with Kvothe, Sim, and Wilem stumbling home from the Eolian. Perhaps crossing the stone arch bridge with their arms around one another. You know, the way you sling your arms around your friends’ shoulders because you love them, but also because you are too drunk to walk properly.

“The three boys, one dark, one light, and one- for lack of a better word- fiery, do not notice the night. Perhaps some part of them does, but they are young, and drunk, and busy knowing deep in their hearts that they will never grow old or die. They also know that they are friends, and they share a certain love that will never leave them. The boys know many other things, but none of them seem as important as this. Perhaps they are right.”

You are my shadow willow on a sunny day
You are my bright penny by the roadside. You are worth more than salt or the moon on a long night of walking. You are sweet wine in my mouth, a song in my throat, and laughter in my heart.

Because there haven’t been enough cheesy lines yet.

  66. Posted January 20, 2015 at 9:50 PM | Permalink

In my head, I’m liking a front page picture of Denna from the “breathless” scene just her face, lying on the ground face up (maybe profile like from the side, or straight up looking down), Kvothe’s face obscured behind hers as he whispers in her ear, and the title on the page is “The seven words that will make any woman fall in love with you” inside it could either be blank, for obvious reasons, or for the book lovers it could literally just have the seven words from the scene.

And I +1 the Auri suggestions above.

Yes! Of course! I would like to see some geared towards friends as well as romantic ones. Becasuse without Wil, Sim, and Auri where would Kvothe be? Probably in a ditch, or The Rookery, quite possibly even in a shallow grave.

What might work would be to take 10 assorted quotes from the books (maybe even something from book 3) and have them as options. So you’ve got clever covers of scenes/characters and the inside could be blank with a choice of quote for an up charge.

Omg I’d really love to see Valentine’s cards with Kvothe & Denna ♥
I love them so much and I ship them so harddd~ ><

If they don't have Kvothe's quotes about her then what else?
His description about her melts every woman's heart:

“Her eyes were dark. Dark as chocolate, dark as coffee, dark as the polished wood of my father’s lute. They were set in a fair face, oval. Like a teardrop. Her easy smile could stop a man’s heart. Her lips were red. Not the garish painted red so many women believe makes them desirable. Her lips were always red, morning and night. As if minutes before you saw her, she had been eating sweet berries, or drinking heart’s blood. No matter where she stood, she was in the center of the room. Do not misunderstand. She was not loud, or vain. We stare at a fire because it flickers, because it glows. The light is what catches our eyes, but what makes a man lean close to a fire has nothing to do with its bright shape. What draws you to a fire is the warmth you feel when you come near. The same was true of You." (Instead of Denna, how does that sound? ♥)

An other one could be Denna's quote or Kvothe's about her Seven Words..♥

"I was wondering what you’re doing here." (And by "here" you can place a heart) ♥

Instead of quotes you could also try:
"My Seven words to you" ..and let the buyer write his/hers.

    Or…"From Savien, (…..) …to my Aloine. ♥

We have so many ideas for Valentine´s day Cards.
And because Kvothe is a heterosexual boy, there so few quotes for cards for women.
    So here´s one.

You sell it together with one of your books [you can choose one].
On the card is something like “men all have their idea from one book” – I forgot the quote, and then your book.

There are so many ideas here I doubt this will ever been seen or read, but I have one idea I can’t believe no one has mentioned yet. There is a scene in NOTW where Denna (she IS high on resin at the time buuut) tells Kvothe, “Your face is like the perfect kitchen.” I would love to see that on a card. More of it though, I just can’t remember it all. I think I recall her comparing his nose to a bowl.
