Okay folks. Today we’ve got Part Six of the embarrassingly delayed photo contest.
Earlier parts here: [Prologue] [Part I] [Part II] [Part III] [Part IV] [Part V]
Today we’ve got a category that we’re loosely referring to as, “In book references” or that Oot might refer to as a bit of a “Brain Quest.”
In short, they’re books that you have to think about a little bit to understand what’s going on…
Oh… right. It’s the cut-flower sound of a photo contest that I started back in 2011…
This one took a little puzzling. But we eventually we figured out that it’s a reference to my name: In German, Rot = red & Fuss = foot. Redfoot.
From the drugged conversation Kvothe has with Simmon early on in book two….
No, wait, sorry. Blue flame. My bad.
An image inspired by the story of Jax. According to the photographers: We sacrificed a lot of blood in a dark ritual… no, strike that. We sacrificed a lot of blood to mosquitos while taking pictures in a nearby forest at twilight.”
At first I thought this picture was merely trying to appeal to my prurient interests. Which I don’t mind. Then I saw the title of the file and the little caption. I’m sure you can figure out the rest using a certain piece of verse from the book.
I see someone else has discovered how hard it is to make a mommet out of paraffin wax….
Yup.
If you click this one to embiggen it, you can see the passage being read deals with Denna’s ring…
Took me a while to notice the reddish light coming from the sympathy lamp. It’s worth your time to take a look at the titles of the other books, too.
I bet I know where you bought that….
It might help to know that “Holunderwein” is German for “elderberry wine”.
You’ll probably need to embiggen this picture to see what’s going on here. And maybe take a peek at this Goodreads quote.
This one took some work, so we’re going to give it an honorable mention:
And the same thing with this one, check out the detail of what’s written on the whiteboard in the background….
And here’s the winner:
I like the cut of your jib. Also, I am slightly terrified of you, and that magical combination means that you take home the prize in this category, the near-mythical golden Talent Pipes.
Honorable mentions will also get pins. Because they’re awesome too.
Keep in mind that there are *way* more pictures than I’m able to show here in the blog. You can check them out here on the photo stream.

I live for these blog posts…. which means I’ll probably live for a long long time! Haha
Haha, that’s the truth!
Though I like to think that somebody took a picture that actually spoils a major plot point in the third book but the photo is too amazing not to share, so Pat has to “procrastinate” posting these so that it comes out after he has polished book 3 to a gleaming gem and released it.
That single photo is so amazing, it’s the source of most of Pat’s pressure to finish book 3, it keeps him up till the wee hours of the morning, it wakes him up in cold sweat. Pat curses the day that he started this contest because it brought about this unrevealed but magnificent and terrible photo.
I like that theory! I’m also going to jump on that theory, and add that the amazing terrible photo is one of mine ;) haha.
Cute baby!
Good thing he’s got that diaper to hold his, uh, stuff together. . .
Someone better watch out for that baby. His ass could fall off!
For those not as hopelessly entrenched in linguistic nerdiness as some, the whiteboard says “Bloodless” in Angerthas Daeron (a Tolkien alphabet). Buggered if I know what the small one says, I read it as “chagwn”….
Wow, I didn’t catch that part, that’s amazing…
Extra points here. That’s some high-level geeking…
Pat,
Thank you that was such a fun post. I *heart* your readers/fan community. They are creative, inventive, inspired, and willing to take the time to get the photo just right. I loved them one and all.
So excited for a photo contest blog! Thank you!
If a contest is done for book 3 (repress urge to shudder) (also shake off all guilt) …maybe time could be saved by limiting entries to one per person, or have people submit to specific categories and less sorting would be needed.
My photo is the third one with the pies! It represents a quote that rendered me unable to speak due to uncontrollable laughter when Kvothe was drugged on page 73 of The Wise Man’s Fear:
“How about this?” Simmon asked me. “Which is worse, stealing a pie or killing Ambrose?”
I gave it a moment’s hard thought. “A meat pie, or a fruit pie?”
I’ll admit, I’m pretty proud of that line…
The chapter Mr. Whiffle is beginning is called “Blood and Ink”. Enjoyed the contest!

When I tell friends about this series I say it is our world in parrellel, with magic. “There’s zues and pals and well zues’ tree, Christ and the virgin birth, and of course, the source of all magic, Nirvana. Hes got Plato and the great Doigines/Teccam.
Heya Hayden,
You’ve been chiming in here in the comments for a while now, and while your comments are enthusiastic, they really don’t have anything to do with the posts they’re attached to.
To be honest, quite frequently, I can’t tell what your posts are about at all.
So for now, I’ve put you into the moderation queue. One of the things I pride myself on here in the blog is that we have a high signal to noise ratio. Rest assured that if you make a cogent, topical post, it will show up here as soon as someone approves it.
Fondly,
pat
Awesome photos all around, lots of creativity and cleverness.
Bit of housekeeping, the “embiggen” link to the redfoot photo is actually pointing to the cut flowers again.
I’m a massive fan from Nigeria. I just discovered this blog. If there is another photo contest(in a year time or whenever), would my entries be valid? If they are, would I get gold pipes if they win? I’m really curious.
Sorry to be that guy but, med student here and blood donor, and have to tell you that universal receiver type of blood isn’t 0+ is type AB (yes there is a type of blood that have both A and B so they can receive from A, B, and 0 ). 0+ are able to donate to all the other types who are RH +
Hey, so I’m a high school physics teacher, and I would love to have something like the schema for the Arrowcatch as a poster to put up in my classroom. Do you think we might ever see something like that for sale? It would be very cool!
