Heya Folks,
I posted my schedule for GenCon a few weeks ago because a few of the events I’m doing require tickets (Typically free tickets) and I wanted to make sure my people got their hands on them before they sold out.
I was right in being concerned, because a few things *are* already sold out, but we’ve got a lot of other festivities going on, so I thought I’d share with you a list of things you can do here in Indianapolis, with or without me.
- The rest of my Con events
Since a few things are already closed, I figured you’d like to see the list of things that either don’t require registration, or that still have tickets available.
Thursday, August 4
1pm-2pm: Writer’s Craft: Convince the Reader to Care, Capital 1
Friday, August 5
4pm-6pm: An Evening with Pat Rothfuss
This one will be fun. I’ll be reading a bunch of stuff, answering questions from the audience, and telling stories.
This event requires a free ticket, and they’re more than two thirds gone, so if you want to check it out be sure to get in on it soon here. (Even if the tickets sell out, you can show up at the door and trust that some of the folks who got tickets will ditch the event.)
Saturday, August 6
3:00pm-4:00pm: Character Craft: Representing Unconscious Motivation, Capital 1
4:00pm-5:00pm: Writer’s Life: Writers and Mental Health (You’re Not Alone), Capital 1
These panels are all going to be good, but this last one is a subject I’ve wanted to talk about for a while now.
- Concert Against Humanity
If you missed the Concert Against Humanity last year, it was a ton of fun, and this year it’s going to be on Friday, August 5th at 8pm. It’s run by Max Temkin and his team at Cards Against Humanity, and every ticket comes with swag bags that contain limited edition packs of CAH cards, and other swag from sponsors. (The value of the swag is more than the cost of the ticket.)
They even had me shoot a little promo video for them…
I’ll be grabbing a little bit of stage time, while other more professional performers like Jonathan Coulton, Paul & Storm, Molly Lewis, and a bunch of other cool people do the real work.
Even better, Max tweeted out a discount code for folks to use to get $20 off the tickets.
How do I get you jackals to buy tickets to https://t.co/SxPPuekNj5?! Here’s a code for $20 off tickets: BUTTS
— Max Temkin (@MaxTemkin) August 3, 2016
It’s going to be an amazing time, and I’d also like for Jenn to keep her job, so if you’re at all interested, tickets are available here. I think they’re going to sell out, so you might want to do it sooner than later…
- Limited edition Draccus
I’ve made it no secret that I love King of Tokyo. The folks over at Iello found out, and we teamed up to make a Draccus monster for the game.
We launched these for the first time last year at Gencon, but we only had a limited number of them, and they sold out every day. This year, we brought more of our limited stock, so if you didn’t get a chance to grab one before, you can get them at our booth.
What booth is that? I hear you ask….
- The Worldbuilders Booth (#267)
Remember the booth I mentioned just a couple paragraphs ago? There’s a ton of stuff happening there throughout the convention. We have lots of geeky swag, the raffle, a deal for a free tote if you buy $100 or more of merch, plus signings with a bunch of cool musicians.
Here’s the full schedule of signings & meet-and-greets:
- Friday, 3-4pm: Professor Shyguy
- Friday, 4-5pm: Mikey Mason
- Friday, 5-6pm: Andy D
- Saturday, 1-2pm: Megathruster
- Saturday, 2-3pm: Sarah Donner
- Sunday, 10:30-11:30am: The Doubleclicks
All of these people are great, so you should swing by whenever you can to check out some awesome merch and fantastic music doers.
- A chance to play a game with me.
In order to encourage people to swing by the Worldbuilders booth, we’re giving people a chance to come play a game of King of Tokyo with me on Sunday at 2pm.
Here’s how it works: If you swing by the Worldbuilders Booth (#267) you can submit your name once for the drawing. If you buy something, you can get your name added to the drawing a second time. Plus, while you’re there, you can check out the cool things that we’re selling for charity. You can get your geek on while making the world a better place.
We’ll be drawing 3 names on Sunday morning, so if you’re at all interested be sure to swing by before the end of the day Saturday.

Hope you all have a great weekend. And if you’re at Gencon, I hope to see you there….

Whenever there’s no comments on the blog, I feel like I fucked something up….
I’ve never even seen the comments empty….. Ominous sign?
Haha :D I was under the impression you were not reading comments anymore due to the many questions about the book that shall not be named.
You didn’t fuck up. People are probably quiet because they are either at the con and don’t have time to be online or wish they were at Gencon and thus your time schedule doesn’t apply to them.
Hope you are having a great time there :)
My King of Tokyo Draccus arrived Yesterday in the mail… It was awesome.
Every year I find more reasons to make sure I can finally make my way to GenCon.
Is there a booth that will have demo copies of Tak?
It was such a pleasure getting to meet you yesterday at the con! Thank you for being so considerate during what was clearly a break for you. I hope you did get something to eat after that – you seemed to be in good hands, at least.
I’ve fallen in love with the world you’ve created, and I deeply admire the positive change behind World Builders and your general positive geek advocacy! I’ve backed your KS and other projects when I could because I feel strongly about these things. Your books have brought some amazing people into my life (real ones, not just the characters) that I wouldn’t have met without that shared interest.
It was a real pleasure to get to sing for you, even shortly, and I feel much better about wearing the talent pipes now. That was the highlight of the Con for me.
You ask for comments, I provide!
I just did an interview about your magnificence in the realm of feminism. (I don’t own the website it’s on – I won’t benefit from traffic.) You may enjoy it: https://givehergumption.com/2016/08/05/brady-dill-patrick-rothfuss-brandon-sanderson-and-feminism-in-the-fantasy-genre/
Hey Pat –
One of many questions –
Kote – Is this pronounced as the word “Coat” or Ko-tay?
Just wondering if the Siaru followed traditional pronunciation.
Question 2 –
Where on the map is Kvothe’s little village.
If you’ve already answered these questions, I apologize.
Ok – Here’s question 3
I seem to have trouble finding the age of both Chronicler and Kvothe.
Pat would probably rather you mull these things over and find your own answers.
Q1 I think is “coat”
Q2 I think Kvothe’s village is called Newarre and is near Abbots Ford and BaednBryt. None of those are on the map though, most likely for a good reason.
Q3 It’s not specified, again on purpose. Kvothe is probably in his 20s give or take time in the Fey. Bast I think, is closer to 10 times that.
#1
I’m not totally sold on the Coat part – Siaru seems to follow Spanish/Italian pronunciations (my guesses from the book) For instance…
NOTW – page 255 Kvothe says- Rieusa ,ta krelar deala tu.
WMF – page 171 – Kilvin says – Kist, crayle, en kote. Kraemet brevetan Aerin.
when I read them in my head, the pronunciations come out Spanish/Italian, so ‘e’ would be pronounced ‘ay’. Which is why I am asking.
#2 Yeah – I know the names of the places where he is staying, but I was curious as to where on the map he is. Is he in Vintas? That was the only place that seemed to have a King in the book. I agree with your aspect though, he does want to remain undiscovered.
#3 What confuses me about Kvothe’s and Chronicler’s age is in NOTW p332. Kvothe and Chronicler are discussing the university. Chron says that they are still telling stories about Kvothe. But didn’t Kvothe read the book about the Mating Habits of the Common Dracus? If Chronicler wrote the book before Kvothe got to the Univeristy, how old is he? Maybe I am being prejudiced about the school being for young folk and Chronicler went there at an older age.
You are totally right on with Bast’s age. He seems to be playing at being a human. I wonder if being in the human world will affect him as being in the Fae affected Kvothe.
Sigh. I love these books. Chapter 11 in WMF is by far some of Pat’s best writing.
Patiently waiting for Book 3. I am as patient as two stones…
I think Pat probably had a guide for the audiobook US narrator to follow because Pat when saying characters names in interviews match the narrators pronunciations. Interestingly the UK version narrated by Rupert Degas don’t, for example, Fela is Fell-uh, Arliden is Ar-luh-den and Auri is Awe-ree when Pat and the narrator say it but it’s Fay-ler, Arl-lee-dan and Oww-ree wen Rupert says it.
Both Narrators says Kote as coat though, so I’m pretty sure its that.
I think you’re right that he’s in Vintas but not down to the penitent king, probably more down to that they use Vintish currency in the Waystone Inn.
I wondered over the age difference between Kvothe and Chronicler for a bit but I think it works out fine
Kvothe is young and gets into the University at a young age, learns his stuff and leaves before Devon ever gets there.
I think Devon attends the university much later in life. He’s written his books and already made a name for himself and has his wealth before getting there. Probably why Elodin calls him a papery little t*at. Older students probably aren’t that uncommon, you’ve got Gillers and Mannet who are still there.
Based on that I think Devon is probably late 30s early 40s.
Hey Pat! Is there any chance you’d be able to visit the New York Comic Con?
Pat, I hope this isn’t a misuse of the blog. I’m responding to a question you posed to Twitter (I’m not on it) asking for a word meaning above-normal victory in any game (such as, in cribbage, to “skunk”). I’d suggest “plastered,” which comes to us from the game-to-some of killing for sport. The overzealous hunter who mangles a bird with too much shot from a shotgun has “plastered” it, because he’s made a pulpy mass not unlike the act of mixing plaster. Source.
See also “Plastered” in geopolitical context: W.F. Buckley v. G. Vidal.
Sometimes one wins by so much it has an anti-fun effect.
I’d love to go to a Con in the US but can’t afford it yet, maybe next year.
Pat, are there any plans to come to the UK any time soon? I missed the last time you came but I swear by the ever moving moon I wont miss your next one!
