The Coming Storm

So. Tomorrow we launch our yearly fundraiser. It’s our 10th anniversary. A big milestone.

Worldbuilders is my pride and joy. It has changed my life, and I’m as proud of it as I am of my own sweet children, and I love it as much as I love my children. It is a force for good in this weary world, and I’m so proud of the fact that over the years beautiful geeks of all nations have come together, raised nearly 8.5 million dollars, and made the world a better place.

We’re going a lot of new things to mark our 10-year anniversary. We’re pulling the trigger on a plan I’ve been slowly assembling for years. (It has to do with D&D) I’ve been mulling it over for ages, and I’ve finally figured out how to make it work…

On top of that, I think this is the year I’m going to pull an arrow out of my quiver that I’ve been keeping in reserve for a *long* time.

But the biggest news of all is that we’re changing the format of the fundraiser itself. Worldbuilders isn’t going to be a four weeks long (plus a little) this year. This year we’re doing the whole fundraiser in two weeks. Less than half the time we normally use to let it all play out.

It’s big stuff. And we’re making all these changes for good reasons. And they’re good choices. I have high hopes for this year. I think it’s going to be our best year ever.

So now, tonight, I should be writing a blog where I rile y’all up. I should do some cheerleading. Get you excited about what’s coming….

And that’s the blog I sat down to write tonight. But I’m not feeling it.

So instead, tonight, at 2:17 am, I’m going to tell you the truth. I’m not excited. I’m stressed.

No. That isn’t even the real truth.

The truth is, I’m scared.

It should come as no surprise to any of you who have read this blog over the years that I hate and fear change. There’s a reason I still live here in Stevens Point. There’s a reason I still wear the same coat I bought in college. There’s a reason I still use my beloved, 30-year-old Model M keyboard.

(This keyboard has seen some shit, y’all.)

We’re changing the fundraiser this year. And I know it’s for the best. But… I don’t like changing things that work. And the truth is, Worldbuilders has worked amazingly well for almost a decade now… We’ve raised over 8 million dollars to help people all over the world. We’ve helped tens of thousands of families. We have saved lives. We have given families hope and peace. There are children out there who are fat and happy because of us.

And still, tonight, the evening before the fundraiser, I’m scared.

I’m scared people won’t like the changes we’ve made. I’m scared people will be confused. I’m scared we won’t be able to get the word out to new people. I’m scared donors from previous years won’t come back….

I’m worried people won’t realize the fundraiser is *so* much shorter this year until it’s too late. I’m worried that they’ll show up on December 13th, when we’re normally still going strong, and realize they’ve missed out on everything.

I’m worried I haven’t done enough to prepare, and this year will be a failure, and it will be my fault.

Aaand that’s it. I don’t have a sudden reversal to end with. No big closer. No ray of light.

I was kinda hoping if I started this blog I could write my way out of this feeling, but it’s still here. I’m worried that it’s all going to be a trainwreck, and thousands of kids will go to bed hungry because I screwed up.

I just literally sat here for five minutes (It’s 3:05 now) wondering what I can possibly say to pull this blog up into something inspirational.

And I got nothing.

But what else can I do but put my head down and bull forward? My little boy has been filling up jars with change so that he can have enough money to buy a cow for Worldbuilders this year. So we’re going to do that. (I feel a little better thinking about that.)

(He’s so much older than this now, but I love this picture.)

Also, y’know what? Here’s a picture of him with a fake mustache because it’s my blog and I an post pictures like this if I want.

Also, here’s my littler baby dressed up as a bug.

(Cutie AF)

Oh. Wow. When I was scrolling through the files in my media library, guess what I just found.

This:

Hell. Every once in a while I can really put some words together, can’t I?

I guess I’ve got to take my own advice, don’t I? I’m not as good at this as I’d like to be. I’m not as organized or as clever or connected as I wish I were. I’m scared all of this is going to fall apart around me and that the fundraiser will fail.

But what can I do? I guess I’m going to Bilbo it up.

So when I wake up tomorrow (Monday) I’m going to e-mail people and call in favors and do interviews and pull strings and contrive every of trick I can think of to get eyes on the fundraiser this year. Because we’re giving away some *cool* stuff, and I want the geeks of the world to come donate money, make the world a better place, and win some cool shit while they’re at it.

I hope you’re ready, everyone.

I hope I’m ready too.

Either way, I’ll see you soon.

We are the geeks who do good. We are the nerds who never quit. We are the dorks that defy convention.

We do it because you inspire us. We do it because you gave us a common cause and a way to do real, lasting good.

For all that you may have been in a dark place when writing this, it reminds us that you are a human who cares about us and the world at large.

    Pat,

Two years ago, when I was still in uni, I donated money to the fundraiser for the first time as a Christmas gift for my sisters. I had never donated money to a charity previously. Last year, when I got my first job, I donated my 13th salary to the fundraiser. And I will certainly pitch in this year again!

I guess what I’m trying to say is: Thank you for inspiring me to donate. Thank you and the team at Worldbuilders for being a force of good in this world.

Heifer International seems a like a great organization. I donated directly to them last year but got turned off by emails several times a day and phone calls asking for more money. What I thought would be a positive experience was soured by the post-donation nagging. What is the Worldbuilder’s donation experience like?

It’s really relaxed. I don’t remember getting many emails, and the ones I did get contained important information regarding my donation (receipts and stuff). I donated the last couple of years (since I got my first real job after College), and have been really happy with the process.

Last Year, I donated to Worldbuilders for the first time. My second pregnancy went terribly bad and because I was so sad, I wanted to make other people happy.
A year later, I’m sitting here with my son, who is 2 months old, and reading your announcement for the next fundraising. This year, I will participate for a much better reason. I want to share happiness.

By the way, I won a prize at the first try :-)

Dear mister Rothfuss, or can I call you Patrick?
Change can indeed be scary… We’ve all been there at some point. But try to think of all the people that you ARE helping, instead of those that you think you’re maybe not helping… Every person that got help from Worldbuilders, is a person you’ve helped… That’s hundreds of thousands of people that you’ve helped over the years Pat. You’re an amazing person in any case!
    Best regards,

What do you think of bringing some happiness to the waiting people out there and finally
publish the last book. One single Euro from every sold book could be donated to help the poor
children in our world. Or are you scared of the changes when you publish the last one?
Are you scared of finishing it and that you can not create another world that comes near to
Kvothe’s one? Are you scared that people wont give you the attention anymore that you are
used to? Fact is, you was running away instead of finishing your work. And you did it that long,
that I already do not remember the full story anymore. If you ever get the courage to do the
    final step?

One: if you don’t remember the story, it’s called Re-reading.

Your state of happiness regarding the absence of book 3 is a YOU problem, not a him problem.

Pat is takig care of himself, and that’s what the rest if us want. We’re trying to be here to support him, and encourage him.

The likeliness of him taking MORE time to finish because people pester and bully him about book 3 is quite likely.

      Bugger off.

As a side, wrapping up a genius story like this and tuck in all the loose ends is a VERY difficult task to complete in one book. I would much rather wait for a great story end than have him dish out something mediocre just to satisfy people like you.

I can’t help but feel sorry for people like this. They clearly feel bad and have no idea how to express themselves or ask for help.

Otherwise, there is no understanding how they might think that an email like this would elicit the response they are hoping for. Unless they are intentionally trolling and hoping for a response, which is even sadder, as this is the only way they know how to get attention.

You shouldn’t have to be afraid to say something that Alot of other people are thinking. I check back here more often than I would care to say, just to see if he will be announcing the release of book 3…to be only completely emotionally drained once again . ..and before you ask. To the dook – You come off as entitled and though I can’t speak for Mr. Rothfuss, I’m sure if the long wait means you are no longer a fan, you will nary be missed. Good riddance.

To Mike M – I agree many have waited a long time, but your poor “bullied” dook deserves a reminder that the ears don’t own the lute. As for your “completely emotionally drained” self – ha! How dramatic! You perhaps should stop checking this site. Trust me – when the book comes out, you’ll hear about it.

Lastly, to Mr. Rothfuss – Thank you for this amazing charity effort. And please for the love of it all, read, travel, relax, play D&D, power down – inspiration should not be rushed, and confidence will come. You have the wisdom of many grandmothers…

Who has more courage? A) A well-known author with two small children that manages to raise $8.5 million in his spare time, while dealing with a mood disorder, a loss in his family, and God-knows-what-else; or B) a Dork— sorry, Dook— that takes pot shots from afar, while hiding behind a comfortable cloak of Internet anonymity?

And Mike, why do you presume to speak for millions of fans? I think the vast majority of fans have learned that once we put on big boys and girls’ pants, we have to learn to wait patiently. “Gimme, gimme” has an age limit. Moreover, Pat owes you nothing. Repeat: Pat owes you nothing.

Have either of you had any luck in motivating creative people (or anyone older than 10 in any walk of life) with whining, character indictments, insults, and guilt trips? Has it dawned on you (and the other millions that appointed you spokesperson) that your bile might impede rather than accelerate his progress?

Yeah. I’m not so much in agreement with Mike or dook but I don’t like the whole what is owed sentiment. I mean, yeah, he doesn’t “owe us anything” I suppose. Maybe it’s because we are to cowardly to ask. He isn’t. I’ve donated every year for 6 years because I like the books, researched the charity and thought it was a good cause. I did that because he asked. As far as “motivating creative types” that’s kinda a cop out, dudes a writer, that’s his job. There’s plenty of days I’m not motivated to do my job, but it’s an important job so I do it. I say I’ll do something and I try my level best to follow through. It’s hard to really appropriately express frustration on the internet and maybe these guys got caught up in that frustration. They are really just asking, just like he does, for something. If it’s ok for him, it should be ok for them too. He’s just better at asking in this forum, I mean, seriously, professional writer, great books, he’s good at this. Maybe these two just aren’t as good. That doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to ask.

I’ve been donating to Worldbuilders since 2012. I donate art/jewelry I’ve made to Worldbuilders to help raise money, and I also usually kick in some cash donations as well. I look forward to it every single year (both the making things for it, and seeing what cool stuff has been donated and the chance at winning some of it). I suspect that most of the faithful followers for Worldbuilders have been checking the blog regularly to see when it’s going to start, because they love participating too.

I think it will still be a success, this year. You’ve got so many people who participate, and so many who will help spread the word about it. I know I’ll be posting about it on social media, to help as much as I can.

Regardless of how this year plays out, as long as there’s a Worldbuilders, I’ll donate to it. I’ll give money every year, and as long as you all are willing to take the things I make for it, I’ll donate those, too. You can track my evolution as an artist across the years of Worldbuilders, from the very first piece I ever sent in, to the latest one. I want to keep going right along with you because it means so much to me now.

You’d think /eventually/ we’d get the hint that it’s apparently on the same dates each year(?) or even that it’s a recurring thing, but no. A tweet, a blog, a youtube video, a reddit post – that’s how we know our favorite thing is kicking off again. Haven’t missed one yet.

I’d like to say something like: “Don’t worry. Everything will go splendidly as always.” But I don’t know that. Sometimes worry is appropriate. Sometimes being overconfident contributes to stuff like Trump getting elected. So I’ll worry with you instead and do my best to help make this another successful fundraiser for Worldbuilders.

You got this. We got this. Everyone has this. :-D I’m excited about the changes, even if I don’t know what most of them are or why! ;-)

Ka . . . ching! That’s the sound of me remembering to look up how much I donated last year and donating more this year. (That’s my annual plan, BTW, for this fundraiser.)

Is there a better option between this or giving directly to Heifer? I’d like to see each dollar go as far as possible.

According to the donation page, “100% of your donation goes right to Heifer,
whose programs help improve the lives of people all around the world.” So, the main difference between donating through WB rather than going straight to Heifer for these next two weeks is that you get entered into the lottery for a chance to win some goodies. Plus, if you’re hanging out around here, or join a donation team, or catch Pat’s Twitch streams it’s kind of community building. People have made new friends through this experience, and for some it just feels good to be part the fundraising efforts in that way.

Also, the first $100,000 through WB gets a 100% match. Do if you donate $20 through WB in the next two weeks, you’re effectively donating $40.

Well, Pat, this will either mildly amuse and divert you, or make you think “restraining order”, but as I read this blog I was quite literally also looking at a picture of your feet.

That probably needs some context: I went self-employed this year and recently put up an inspiration board in my study at home. It has a picture from the blog where you first posted your “Bilbo it up” words, to remind me that sometimes you just need to get on with what the world’s throwing at you.

So if your feet can inspire me, just imagine what more your heart can do, for me and others. It’s clear to everyone that you throw your heart into this and it’s THAT, rather than any questions of format and duration etc, which makes me (and, judging by the comments so far, pretty much everyone who reads this blog) confident that all will be awesome.

    Hi Patrick,

I have to say that I was a bit surprised by the end date this year, but that explains it.
I made my small contribution today and wish you all the best!

    Greetings from Belgium ;)

I am ready to take on the next fundraiser (even though my own funds might somewhat disagree)!
You put so much effort and – even more important – heart into this, that I am absolutely sure it will be a success. Let me rephrase that: A*nother* success.
I like to think that most people do or did not donate to Worldbuilders because of your name has some weight to it, but because Worldbuilders, you, them want to make this world a better place or at least change it even a little bit for the better. And this is why a different format won’t matter. The result will be the same: We do something, however small it might seem (just like Bilbo to use your analogy), to help others and have some positive impact.

    No worries here!
Heifer helped by sending me an email, which I appreciate enormously. I never want to miss the fundraiser, but don’t have time to read your blog as often as I like and can never remember when it runs.
So… my message is ‘Keep Those Reminders Coming’!

I just caught a look at the updated Worldbuilders page, and whoever came up with The Daily Builder magazine at the bottom of the page is a genius. That idea alone should be worth an extra chocolate malt.

Today Heifer is doing a triple match. Because of you I will be giving $500. I want to help the most struggling families. Is there a way for world builders to get in on that action? Or should i give directly through Heifer in the next 13 hours?

Don’t be down on yourself for the Model M love! The Model M is an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age, and I’m downright jealous of the fact you still have one hanging around. I make due with Cherry MX switch boards, but I miss that old spring mechanism. You couldn’t break those things if you tried. And I learned to type on an old IBM typewriter, so even the aesthetics aren’t a turnoff for me. I do think Unicomp makes modern dupes of them with USB interfaces, but it’s just not the same. :)

And as fear of change goes, just know that we are all here to Bilbo it up with you. I know, especially with how shit the last years have felt in the world, how easy it is to assume that it’s all dragons out there. But in my experience, if you get a bunch of us nerds together, there’s not a dragon we can’t slay (or at least outwit). We’ve got this, Pat, and so do you. I have only met you once, at a Joseph-Beth book signing years ago, but know that I’m so proud of the work that you and Worldbuilders have done in the last decade to decrease world suck (to borrow a term from one of my other favorite nerd communities).

I have many problems handling things that surround change and the lack of change and my complete fear of both. I have never taken part in a fundraiser and i cant wait. That quote is a part of who i am as a person and has led me to become stronger. I will spread the word to as many as i can and i cant wait to feed some hungry babies. Thank you for being you and for changing my life in ways i never could have imagined.

While I’ve been a fan of your writing for so long, what really has me coming back and checking this blog is how much of fan I’ve become of you as a person. Your honesty and drive to some good in this world is so damn refreshing.

I know I went all gushing fanboy on that, but I just wanted to convey that you are very much appreciated.

I would pay good money for that keyboard. That is a fine keyboard.

Do not change it for the sake of changing it, change it only if you think you have found something much better, that will make your typing easier and more enjoyable. And do not feel guilty for owning a 30-year old keyboard, for that keyboard is a fine, fine keyboard. And if you have found a better solution to typing and are making the change, do not fret it. If you do not try a new keyboard, how will you know if it is actually better or not?

PS. (I am not really talking about the keyboard here, everyone knows that there have been no better keyboards produced in the world since the Type M, do not ever change that one. You can still buy an identical new one for over 100 quid, although I never heard of one breaking down, ever.)

    Hi Pat,

It just so happens that my birthday usually falls at the end of Geeks Doing Good. I frequently encourage my family to buy me gifts through the fundraiser.

This year, I set up a tiny social media fundraiser of my own to donate money to Worldbuilders for my birthday.

I just wanted you to know that WB is still important to a lot of people, and we haven’t gone anywhere.

I second that. Been waiting years for the “trilogy” to be completed. Bought the first two books with my hard earned cash…surely a promised 3rd should be on the cards. There has to be closure on the series and characters.
If I’d known he may not even write it, I wouldn’t have paid for the others.
      Oh well.
